Important: All caution and danger statements in this documentation begin with a
number. This number is used to cross reference an English caution or
danger statement with translated versions of the caution or danger
statement in the IBM NetBAY Rack Safety Information book.
For example, if a caution statement begins with a number 1, translations
for that caution statement appear in the IBM NetBAY Rack Safety
Information book under statement 1.
Be sure to read all caution and danger statements in this documentation
before performing the instructions. Read any additional safety
information that comes with your server or optional device before you
install the device.
Statement 1
CAUTION:
To ensure safety, all configurations of the rack cabinet must be certified by a
nationally recognized testing laboratory in order to verify compliance with
country-specific safety regulations. This process ensures that the end product
remains safe for the operator and service personnel under normal and
forseeable misuse conditions.
Statement 2
DANGER
• Always lower the leveling pads on the rack cabinet.
• Always install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet.
• Always install servers and optional devices starting from the bottom
of the rack cabinet.
• Always install the heaviest devices in the bottom of the rack cabinet.

1. Turn everything OFF.
2. First, attach all cables to devices.
3. Attach signal cables to connectors.
4. Attach power cords to outlet.
5. Turn device ON.
1. Turn everything OFF.
2. First, remove power cords from outlet.
3. Remove signal cables from connectors.
4. Remove all cables from devices.
•Do not extend more than one sliding device at a time.
•The maximum allowable weight for devices on slide rails is 80 kg
(176 lb). Do not install sliding devices that exceed this weight.
Electrical current from power, telephone, and communication cables is
hazardous.
To avoid a shock hazard:
•Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation,
maintenance, or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical
storm.
•Connect all power cords to a properly wired and grounded electrical
outlet.
•Connect to properly wired outlets any equipment that will be attached
to this product.
•When possible, use one hand only to connect or disconnect signal
cables.
•Never turn on any equipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or
structural damage.
•Disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,
networks, and modems before you open the device covers, unless
instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration procedures.

Statement 5
CAUTION:
Use safe practices when lifting.
Statement 6
CAUTION:
Do not place any object on top of a rack-mounted device unless that rack-
mounted device is intended for use as a shelf.
Statement 8
DANGER
≥18 kg (39.7 lb) ≥32 kg (70.5 lb) ≥55 kg (121.2 lb)
•Plug power cords from devices in the rack cabinet into electrical out-
lets that are located near the rack cabinet and are easily accessible.
•Each rack cabinet might have more than one power cord. Be sure to
disconnect all power cords in the rack cabinet before servicing any
device in the rack cabinet.
•Install an emergency-power-off switch if more than one power device
(power distribution unit or uninterruptible power supply) is installed in
the same rack cabinet.
•Connect all devices installed in a rack cabinet to power devices
installed in the same rack cabinet. Do not plug a power cord from a
device installed in one rack cabinet into a power device installed in a
different rack cabinet.

ix
Statement 10
CAUTION:
Removing components from the upper positions in the Enterprise Rack cabinet
improves rack stability during relocation. Follow these general guidelines
whenever you relocate a populated rack cabinet within a room or building:
•Reduce the weight of the rack cabinet by removing equipment starting at
the top of the rack cabinet. When possible, restore the rack cabinet to the
configuration of the rack cabinet as you received it. If this configuration is
not known, you must do the following:
—Remove all devices in the 32U position and above.
—Ensure that the heaviest devices are installed in the bottom of the rack
cabinet.
—Ensure that there are no empty U-levels between devices installed in the
rack cabinet below the 32U level.
•If the rack cabinet you are relocating is part of a suite of rack cabinets,
detach the rack cabinet from the suite.
•Inspect the route that you plan to take to eliminate potential hazards.
•Verify that the route that you choose can support the weight of the loaded
rack cabinet. Refer to the documentation that comes with your rack cabinet
for the weight of a loaded rack cabinet.
•Verify that all door openings are at least 760 x 2030 mm (30 x 80 in.)
•Ensure that all devices, shelves, drawers, doors, and cables are secure.
•Ensure that the four leveling pads are raised to their highest position.
•Ensure that there is no stabilizer bracket installed on the rack cabinet.
•Do not use a ramp inclined at more than ten degrees.
•Once the rack cabinet is in the new location, do the following:
—Lower the four leveling pads.
—Install stabilizer brackets on the rack cabinet.
—If you removed any devices from the rack cabinet, repopulate the rack
cabinet from the lowest position to the highest position.
If a long distance relocation is required, restore the rack cabinet to the
configuration of the rack cabinet as you received it. Pack the rack cabinet in the
original packaging material, or equivalent. Also, lower the leveling pads to raise
the casters off of the pallet and bolt the rack cabinet to the pallet.

Chapter 1. Introduction
This documentation contains information that will help you plan for your IBM®
NetBAY™Rack cabinet and optional device installation. Always refer to the
documentation that comes with your server or optional device, as well as the
documentation that comes with the rack cabinet for detailed installation instructions.
Also, refer to your unpacking instructions for how to unpack and locate the rack
cabinet.
Note: The illustrations in this documentation might be slightly different from your
hardware.

Chapter 2. Planning for your rack cabinet
A program, Rack Configurator, is available from the IBM Web site
http://www.ibm.com to help you plan your rack cabinet and optional device
installation. This program provides an intuitive, graphical interface to help you
configure the rack cabinet and optional devices. The Rack Configurator program also
provides the following information about your rack cabinet:
•Weight and stability limits
•Thermal and heat calculations
•Power requirements
•Internal space dimensions
•External space requirements
•Human factors considerations
Statement 1
CAUTION:
To ensure safety, all configurations of the rack cabinet must be certified by a
nationally recognized testing laboratory in order to verify compliance with
country-specific safety regulations. This process ensures that the end product
remains safe for the operator and service personnel under normal and
forseeable misuse conditions.
In the Rack Configurator program, you can select components from the Component
Catalog, and place them in the Configuration Notebook to create a configuration. The
Configuration Notebook also contains a parts list, specifications, and a top-view floor
plan. With this information, you can then configure a single rack cabinet or a suite of
rack cabinets.
Rack Configurator functions such as Auto Arrange, Validate, and Build, ensure
proper placement of optional devices within the rack cabinet. The Rack Configurator
program guides your connection of optional devices, helping you to select the
appropriate cables for connections. For additional assistance in creating a
configuration, start IBM ConfigPro or IBM Which Switch? to configure individual
devices.

8 IBM NetBAY Rack: Planning Guide
Defining rack cabinet physical dimensions and clearances
The NetBAY25 Rack, NetBAY42 Rack, and NetBAY42 Enterprise Rack cabinets are
Electronic Industries Association (EIA) standard rack cabinets. See Table 1 for the
dimensions and weights for the rack cabinets.
Note: The dimensions and weights shown are for the primary rack cabinets.
Expansion rack cabinets have the same physical dimensions but weigh less
because they do not have side panels.
A rack cabinet requires a minimal operational clearance on all sides to ensure proper
ventilation and access to open the front and rear doors. An extended service
clearance provides easier access to the rack cabinet so that you can install and
service optional devices. See Figure 6 and Figure 7 on page 9 for rack cabinet
service clearances. See Figure 8 on page 10 and Figure 9 on page 10 for rack
cabinet operational clearances.
