1. ‘FLAG’ Power Connectors
⇒ Red Wire (there are 2): Connect both of these wires to a constant 12V source that is able to supply 30
amps of current. It is recommended that these connections be made at the steering column near the
ignition switch or to the positive terminal of the battery. Also, for safety, it is recommended that a 30 amp
fuse be installed close to the power source using a suitable fuse holder.
⇒ Yellow Wire: Connect this wire to the main ignition wire at or near the ignition switch. This wire should
switch 12v and not drop out during cranking.
⇒ Brown Wire: Connect this wire to the secondary ignition wire at or near the ignition switch. Many
vehicles require this extra ignition wire to operate computers, air conditioners, heaters, fans, etc.
⇒ Orange Wire: Connect this wire to the main accessory wire at or near the ignition switch. This wire
should switch 12v, however it will drop out during cranking.
⇒ Purple Wire: Connect this wire to the starter wire at or near the ignition switch. This wire should show
12v only during cranking.
3. Valet Switch (Blue 2-pin connector)
Plug in Valet / Service switch.
4
. LED (Red 2-pin connector)
Plug in status LED.
5
. Trunk / Disarm / Vacuum (Red 3-pin connector)
⇒ Green/Black Wire: Trunk release output. This wire supplies a negative output when the ‘Trunk’ button
of the J-Str/4-T remote transmitter is pressed. *WARNING: This wire must be used in conjunction
with a relay or the J-Str/4-T unit will be damaged.
⇒ Red Wire: Factory security disarm output. This wire supplies a negative output when the start sequenc
e
of the J-Str/4 unit begins and also when an unlock signal is received from the J-Str/4-T unit.
⇒ Yellow Wire: Vacuum switch input. Connect this wire to an optional vacuum switch if being used for
engine run sensing.
8. Dip Switch Settings
[factory default is ON]
⇒ Dip Switch #1: Set to off when using the green wire for spark or tach engine run sensing.
⇒ Dip Switch #2: Set to off when using optional vacuum switch for engine run sensing.
⇒ Dip Switch #3: Set to off when needing additional cranking time on vehicles that require it.
⇒ Dip Switch #4: Set to off when installing the J-Str/4
unit on a diesel engine equipped vehicle.
Ignition will come on for 20 seconds allowing the glow plugs to warm up before cranking.
7. Antenna Connector (White 4-pin connector)
[J-Str/4-T Only]
Plug extended range receiver/antenna into this port. Using double stick tape pad provided, mount the
receiver/antenna to the upper inside corner of the windshield and extend wire for maximum range.
6. Door Lock / Unlock (White 3-pin connector)
⇒ Green Wire: Supplies a negative output for lock.
⇒ Red Wire: Supplies constant 12 volt power for door lock relays. *WARNING: This output is only intended
to operate the relay and not as a supply to actuate the door lock motors of the vehicle.
⇒ Blue Wire: Supplies a negative output for unlock.
*Note on Factory installed Anti-Theft systems*
M
any new vehicles are now coming factory equipped with some type of anti-theft system. These include GM
V.A.T.S., PASSLOCK I, II, and III, Ford P.A.T.S. and many others. These systems must be dealt with if a
r
emote starter unit is to be installed. Different methods and modules are available to help the installer deal wit
h
t
hese systems. Please consult J. L. Troy Company, Inc. or the Wire Magic program for specific applications.
**Note: Receiver/Antenna
must be connected in order
for unit to respond to remote
transmitters.
REMOTE TRANSMITTER CODE TEACHING (J-str/4-T only
**Note: Receiver/Antenna must be connected before Code Teaching
In most cases, the transmitters included with the J-str/4-T kit are programmed to the unit at the factory. If not,
you will need to teach the J-str/4-T unit the transmitter codes using the following steps:
1. Within a 5 second period, turn ignition key on-off, on-off, on and leave on. ( HINT: This action has to be
done rather quickly. You will find that if you click the key on and off from the first key click position rather
than from the lock/off position that this procedure will be much easier)
2. If step 1 is completed successfully the LED and the PARKING LIGHTS will flash one time.
3. Now press and hold the valet/service switch for about 3 seconds.
4. The LED and the PARKING LIGHTS will flash quickly 3 times.
5. Now release the valet/service switch.
6. The J-str/4-T unit is now ready to receive transmitter codes.
7. Press Button 1 / Lock of each transmitter one at a time. Each time a new code is received the LED and
the PARKING LIGHTS will flash once confirming that the transmitter code has been learned. The unit will
learn a total of 3 codes.
Turn the ignition key off. Remote transmitter(s) are now ready for use.
2. 10 Pin Connector
⇒ Yellow Wire: Brake switch input. Connect this wire to the switched side of the brake light switch. This
wire must be hooked up properly as it is one of the safety inputs to the J-Str/4 unit and also provides for
some special operating features found elsewhere in this manual.
⇒ Violet Wire: << Not Used >> cap or tape off wire.
⇒ Blue Wire: Hood switch input. Connect this wire to a hood pin switch. If there is not a factory installed
switch, it is highly recommended that you install a pin switch as this wire is one of the safety inputs to the
J-Str/4 unit.
⇒ Green Wire: Spark/Tach Sense input. If using Spark sensing, this wire should be wrapped 4 to 5 times
around any spark plug wire anywhere along its length. *NOTE: Do Not strip insulation from the green
wire or the spark plug wire. This is an inductive hook-up and does not require an electrical connection.
If
using Tach sensing, this wire should be connected to the proper tach sense location with appropriate
connectors.
⇒ Gray Wire: Auxiliary negative output. Use this wire to control any extra relays needed to properly start
the vehicle.
⇒ Orange Wire: Negative trigger input. Connect this wire to the output of the alarm or keyless entry unit
that will be controlling the J-Str/4 unit. This wire is not needed when installing the J-Str/4-T unit.
⇒ Black Wire: Chassis ground. Connect this wire to a good and solid chassis ground. A good ground is
extremely important to the operation of the J-Str/4 unit. If in doubt, go to kickpanel.
⇒ Brown Wire: << Not Used >> cap or tape off wire.
⇒ Red Wire: 12 volt input. Connect this wire to a good 12 volt constant source.
⇒ White Wire: Parking light output. Connect this wire to the parking light circuit. This wire supplies a
positive 12 volt output.
