Installing StealthOne 4

Welcome to StealthOne
Since you are the proud owner of a Valentine One®radar locator you are already
aware that the Valentine One®is the most advanced radar locator available. Your
BMW is also one of the most advanced automobiles available. StealthOne
combines the best of these two worlds.
As good as the Valentine One®is there are areas in which it can be improved, for
example when there is an alert it can be difficult to quickly determine the radar
direction, band, strength, and bogey count by just glancing at the Valentine One®
display because there is so much information displayed to such a small area. The
Valentine One®Concealed Display Kit helps to mitigate this by moving the display
closer to the user’s eyes, but it can be difficult to locate the display to achieve a
clean integrated look without a lot of customization.
StealthOne solves these deficiencies by providing the tightest integration possible
with your BMW and the Valentine One®, and by displaying the information from
the Valentine One®in a concise and easy to read format. Also, StealthOne
enables you to control the muting and changing of the Valentine One® modes
without removing your hands from the steering wheel.
You can currently use StealthOne with any of these BMW models:
•5 Series (E39)
•X5 (E53)
•3 Series (E46)
•Z4 (E85)
IMPORTANT: Your BMW owner’s manual specifically states that the installation
of non-BMW approved accessories such as radios, radar detectors,
telephones, etc. may cause damage to the vehicle, affect the
vehicles safety, interfere with the electrical system of the vehicle
or affect the validity of the BMW Limited Warranty. StealthOne is
not an approved BMW accessory.

Requirements:
-BMW 5 Series (E39), X5 (E53), 3 Series (E46), or Z4 (E85).
-For the E39 or E53 you must have one or more of the following:
Instrument cluster (IKE) with the 20 character LCD display, Multi-
Information Display (MID), or Navigation (NAV).
-For the E46 or E85 you must have either the BMW Business radio (RAD)
or Navigation (NAV). StealthOne data can not be displayed on the
Instrument Cluster for these models.
-Steering wheel buttons to control StealthOne operation and setup.
-Valentine One®radar locator.

Installing StealthOne
The StealthOne product includes the following items:
•The StealthOne module
•A standard 2 Ft. RJ-11 modular Power Cable. This cable connects between
the Valentine One®accessory port and StealthOne.
•A second 2 Ft. RJ-11 modular Interface Cable with an additional black wire
attached. The single wire connects to your automobile’s I-BUS and the
modular cable serves as the auxiliary programming port for future
programming and/or accessories.
•Tie wraps
•Red 3M T-Tap connector
The StealthOne module is small (approx. 2.5x3.5x1 inches, 62x84x28 mm). It is
easy to install and should only take you about 1 hour depending on the location of
your Valentine One®and your BMW model.
Just connect StealthOne and Valentine One®together using the power cable, and
attach the other cable to StealthOne letting one end of it hang free, as shown
below. The single black wire is connected to your BMWs I-BUS in the 5 Series or
X5, and to the K-BUS in the 3 Series and Z4.
What is an I-BUS or K-BUS? In the BMW 5-Series and X5 the BMW I-BUS
(Instrumentation Bus) is a communication bus that connects many of the modules
and systems together in your car, allowing various systems to communicate with
each other. For example your car’s radio can use the I-BUS to display messages
on the navigation display or instrument cluster. The 3-Series and Z4 do not have
the I-BUS, instead it uses the K-BUS (Body Bus) for this purpose. The StealthOne
connects to your car’s bus to communicate with the different displays in your
BMW.

Basic StealthOne installation:
To Install StealthOne:
1. Select an appropriate location to install your Valentine One®using any of the
methods described in the Valentine One®owner’s manual. We recommend
that you use the direct wire power adapter provided with your Valentine One®
and tap into a switched 12v wire in the overhead console. This will allow you
to place the Valentine One®at the top of the front windshield, which will give
it the best unobstructed front and rear view.
Note: When mounted, Valentine One®must have an unobstructed view. It
cannot be mounted behind the windshield wipers.
2. Plug one end of the 2 Ft. RJ-11 modular Power Cable into the Valentine One®
Accessory (ACC) port using Valentine One®’s direct wire power adapter or the
cigarette lighter adapter, and then plug the other end of the Power Cable into
the StealthOne “V1 ACC” module port.
3. Plug the end of the RJ-11 modular Interface Cable that has the I-BUS wire
attached to it into the StealthOne I-BUS/AUX module port. Do not connect the
other modular plug to anything, but instead let the wire hang loose and locate
it in a convenient location. This modular plug will be used for in car
programming of the StealthOne with software updates and future options.

StealthOne Owner’s Manual 6
4. If you have a 5 Series or X5, locate an I-BUS wire in your automobile. If you
have a 3 Series or Z4, locate a K-BUS wire in your automobile. Position the
red wiring-harness connector around the I-BUS or K-BUS wire and squeeze it
gently with pliers until it snaps shut. Plug the black I-BUS wire from the
StealthOne into the red 3M T-Tap wiring harness connector.
5. Now you are ready to move on to the next section on StealthOne Initial
Startup.
IMPORTANT: The installation procedure varies for each of the supported BMW
models. Please refer to our website, www.stealth-one.com, for
more detailed installation instructions for your BMW model. If you
are unfamiliar with automotive electrical systems, see a mechanic
or car-stereo installer. Some knowledge of automotive electrical
systems and of interior-trim removal is necessary to do it
yourself.

StealthOne Initial Startup

Using StealthOne 11

How does it work?
StealthOne is an interface module that works in combination
with the Valentine One®radar locator to display radar
information on a BMW Instrument Cluster LCD Display (IKE),
Multi-Information Display (MID), radio display (RAD), or the
Navigation Screen (NAV).
How it works: The StealthOne uses the Valentine One®Accessory Port to receive
radar information, interprets this data, and then sends this information over the
vehicle’s I-BUS or K-BUS so that it can be displayed in an easy to understand
format on your BMW’s display. The following displays are supported by
StealthOne.
5 Series (E39) and X5 (E53) Instrument Cluster
5 Series (E39) and X5 (E53) Multi-Information Display

3 Series (E46) Business Radio Display
Z4 (E85) Business Radio Display

StealthOne Owner’s Manual 10

Using StealthOne
When there is no active alert StealthOne will not display any information on any of
the BMW displays. When you receive an alert, StealthOne interprets this data and
displays it on the BMW display you have selected. Once the alert has passed,
StealthOne will briefly display the current Valentine One®mode such as “V1 Mode
A” and then clears the display after a few seconds.
Your display selections and viewing options will vary depending on the BMW model
you have. For example, some vehicles do not have the navigation screen, or the
LCD display in the instrument cluster. Also, the number and type of characters
allowed in each type of display will vary. See Chapter 3 Configuring StealthOne
for a detailed description of the different display modes.
Example: Before you installed StealthOne, when you would receive an alert on
your Valentine One®it would look something like this:
Now that you have StealthOne installed the Valentine One®does not light up when
you receive an alert because it is in stealth mode, which is the same behavior as if
you installed the Valentine One®Concealed Display option. StealthOne will now
show the radar information on your BMW’s display similar to below:

Using Wheel Buttons to control the Valentine
One®
A feature of StealthOne is that you can use your BMW’s steering wheel buttons to
control the muting and to change modes of the Valentine One®. This can be very
convenient if your Valentine One®is located in a hard to reach area.
How do I mute the Valentine One®?You can use buttons on the steering
wheel to mute the Valentine One®. By pressing the volume and then the
volume buttons in quick succession, StealthOne will mute the Valentine One®
if there is currently an active audio alert. This has the same effect as if you
quickly pressed the knob on the front of the Valentine One®.
If your BMW does not have the integrated BMW phone, Bluetooth phone module,
or BMW Assist you can also press and release the phone button to mute the
Valentine One®when there is an active alert.
How do I switch between the different Valentine One®modes? If your BMW
does not have the integrated BMW phone, Bluetooth phone module, or BMW Assist
you can use the phone button to change the mode of the Valentine One®. Press
and hold the phone button until you see the mode change on your BMW display.
The new mode will be displayed for a few seconds and then the display will be
cleared.
