Before You Install
The Jarltech 8010 programmable keyboards have been
specially designed for se with personal comp ters or
terminals in point-of-sale and ind strial applications. This
man al describes how to connect the Jarltech keyboard to
yo r system, how to design a keyboard layo t which meets
yo r special req irements, and how to install yo r keyboard
layo t into the Jarltech keyboard.
Model 8010T is a tactile keyboard with seven rows and
fifteen col mns for a maxim m of 105 keys. Single, do ble,
and q adr ple key caps may be sed. Model 8010M is a
membrane keyboard config red with eight rows and fifteen
col mns for a total of 120 keys. For both models, the key-
board layo t, key f nctions and key data are completely
programmable.
Each keyboard has both RS232 and IBM keyboard wedge
interface capabilities. The 8010 keyboard is capable of
receiving data from any external RS232 device (e.g., bar code
scanner) and transmitting that data to a host comp ter via
either the keyboard wedge or an RS232 interface. A magnetic
stripe reading decoder is b ilt into the circ it board of the
8010, allowing easy attachment of a card reader.
Step 1: Turn off your computer
By sh tting off yo r comp ter, yo will prevent any acciden-
tal damage to the keyboard and yo r comp ter.

Step 1: Turn off your computer
Step : Decide on power access
The keyboard req ires +12V DC for programming via the
RS232 port. This may be provided thro gh an internal
connection in yo r comp ter or thro gh an external connec-
tion to a 110V/220V adapter. The components for an internal
connection are provided. If yo are sing an external adapter,
be s re that it conforms with the specifications listed in
Appendix I and then go to Step 4.
Step 3: Using internal power source
Review the RS232 installation shown in Diagram 2.1. Discon-
nect the power to yo r comp ter by npl gging it from the
power so rce. Remove the access cover to yo r comp ter.
Mo nt the +12V DC power plate on an available expansion
slot in the back of yo r comp ter. Attach the 4-pin male
connector to the open female connector of the same type in
yo r comp ter. Replace the comp ter's access cover and
power cord once the internal connections are made.
This chapter describes the connection of Jarltech Series 8010
keyboards to a host comp ter for programming. The Jarltech
keyboard may be programmed thro gh either the RS232 port
or IBM keyboard port. If yo are programming via the
keyboard port, t rn to page 7.
If yo have not already done so, t rn off yo r comp ter to
avoid any accidental damage to the keyboard and yo r
comp ter.

Step 4: Connect keyboard to computer
Step 5: Disconnect peripherals from keyboard
Attach the 9-pin female (DB9F) RS232 connector with b ilt-in
DC jack to an available male eq ivalent (DB9M) RS232
comm nication port on yo r comp ter. Provide power to the
DC jack on the DB9F connector sing either a cable connec-
tion to the +12V DC power plate or an external adapter.
Connect the 9-pin male (DB9M) side of the RS232 cable to the
HOST port on the rear face of the keyboard.
While sing the HOST port for programming the keyboard, be
s re that no peripheral devices are connected to any of the
remaining ports.

Preparation for Programming
Step 6: Confirm RS 3 pin assignments
Step 7: Turn on your computer
Please ens re that the RS232 pin assignments on yo r
comp ter confirm with the pin assignments of the HOST port
on the Jarltech keyboard:
Pin #1: +5V Pin #7: RTS
Pin #2: RX Pin #8: CTS
Pin #3: TX Pin #9: +12V
Pin #5: GND
The pin assignments of all keyboard ports are fo nd in the
specifications listed in Appendix I.
Once all connections are complete, t rn on yo r comp ter. It
sho ld boot p normally. The keyboard will "beep" three
times.
The keyboard is now ready for programming. T rn to
Chapter 3.
If yo havent done so already, t rn off yo r comp ter to
avoid any accidental damage to the keyboard. Refer to the
keyboard installation shown in Diagram 2.2.
Unpl g the 101/102 keyboard cable from yo r comp ter. Pl g
the 101/102 keyboard cable into female side of the T-connec-
tor on the Jarltech keyboard cable. Pl g the male end of the
T-connector into the keyboard port of yo r comp ter.
Be s re that no peripheral device are connected to the
AUX1RS232 port on the Jarltech keyboard. Once all connec-
tions are complete, t rn on yo r comp ter. It sho ld boot p
normally. The keyboard will "beep" three times.
The keyboard is now ready for programming. T rn to
Chapter 3.

Setting the RS232 parameters is req ired for the proper
f nctioning of both the host and the a xiliary RS232 ports.
Scroll [¯] to DEFINE RS232 PARAMETERS and press
[ENTER]. A window similar to Diagram 3.5 will appear.
Step 4: Define RS 3 Parameters

20
There are selection boxes for ba d rate, parity, stop bits, data
bits and inp t/o tp t flow control. The RS232 parameter
settings are indicated by a check mark (Ö). Set the RS232
parameters to match yo r system and application req ire-
ments.
The inp t and o tp t flow control options allow the ser to
enable or disable the hardware flow control in either direction.
For example, when inp t flow control is enabled, flow control
will be asserted once the a xiliary device has sent more data
than the 8010 can receive.
Using either the arrow keys or the [ALT+red key], scroll to
yo r desired setting in each box and press [ENTER]. To
change the parity from NONE to either ODD or EVEN, first
disable NONE (by selecting it and pressing [ENTER]) and
then make yo r selection. When yo are satisfied with the
settings, press [ALT+O] to accept yo r choice. Press [F2] to
save yo r inp t.
Setting the keyboard wedge parameters allows yo to control
the interpretation of all data transmitted thro gh the key-
board port to the comp ter. Scroll [¯] to DEFINE KEY-
BOARD WEDGE PARAMETERS and press [ENTER]. A
window similar to Diagram 3.6 appears.
If yo will be sing the 101/102 keyboard, be s re that is
enabled. The o tp t control f nction allows yo to adj st
the inter-scan code delay and the inter-character delay. Both
feat res are helpf l when fine-t ning is req ired to acco nt
for slight incompatibilities between any keyboard wedge
peripherals and the operation environment. For example, yo
are advised to adj st both delays to 5 or more for windows.
