Wifi Bridge
Thank you for choosing the Wifi Bridge. The Wifi Bridge makes it possible to control
lighting, electric blinds as well as other appliances by any smartphone, tablet and PC.
The main features of the Wifi Bridge are:
•There is no app required, a browser is sufficient.
•Because of wireless connection the Bridge can be placed anywhere within the
house. This sol es the classical range problem of many RF bus installations.
•Multiple Wifi Bridges can be used within one system.
•The web interface can be modified by users with simple HTML knowledge.
•The de ice works fully autarkic, no PC connection required.
•Power consumption is extremely low (ca. 0.35 Watts), which makes
continuous operation uncritical.
•An integrated temperature module informs about current room temperature.
•The web interface is generated automatically by press of a button.
•The hardware basis, which includes 2 megabyte of fully a ailable flash
memory for web data, allows extensi e configurations. Ideal for professional
use.
Included in delivery
The package contains
•Wifi Bridge
•5V USB A/C adaptor

Requirements
To use the Wifi Bridge a Light-Manager is required. The Bridge is compatible with the
Light-Manager Mini, Pro, Pro+ as well as the Light-Manager Pro and Pro+ for Bang &
Olufsen
®
.
The Bridge will be placed next to the Light-Manager. The de ices connect wirelessly
by infrared, a cable is not necessary. The Light-Manager can still be controlled by an
infrared remote control. The use of other remote controls (TV, Hifi…) is not affected.
Wifi compatibility
The bridge supports Wifi networks of the standards 802.11 b, b/g and b/g/n. The
encryption types WEP, WPA and WPA2 are supported, as well as open networks. Also
the Bridge supports ad-hoc mode, which is a router-less direct connection between
de ices. This mode is supported by laptops and iOS de ices, Android does not support
it so far. Ad-hoc is mainly used for configuration, but it can be used for standard
operation, too.
Important: The use or pure 802.11 g or 802.11 n networks is not possible
resp. only in conjunction with ery few routers. We recommend using mixed
mode, where 802.11 b is included.
Important: It is recommended to use WPA2 only mode, not WPA + WPA2. Especially
on the Fritz!Box the WPA + WPA2 mode can cause that the Bridge will not connect.
There are only ery few de ices requiring the unsafe and outdated WPA mode
anymore anyway.

Basic setup using open network
Tip: Check out our ideo tutorial on our YouTube channel at
http:// ideos.jbmedia.de
For the basic setup of the Wifi Bridge please connect your Light-Manager to the PC.
Install the latest ersion of Lightman Studio (currently 4.0) and perform a firmware
update of the Light-Manager. Please load your configuration containing all light scenes
and actuators. Select options -> Wifi Bridge from the menu. If no bridge has been
configured so far also the log screen will open up. If this is not the case this can be
done manually from the iew menu.
Next step is opening your Wifi network, which means disabling network security
temporarily. For this purpose load the configuration page of your router by typing its
IP address in the browser address bar. In case of a Fritz!Box you can enter fritz.box
instead, too. In the wireless settings section remo e the encryption type resp. set it to
OPEN.
Now it is the right time to connect the Wifi Bridge to the AC adaptor or to another USB
port of the PC. The USB connector of the Bridge is for power purposes only; it is not
recognized as a USB de ice by the PC. In the log screen status messages start to
appear.
Note for Bang Olufsen users: By
default the Bridge is adjusted to
normal mode. To change to B&O
mode please wait until you see the
message “B&O mode disabled, press
to enable”. By pressing the front
button of the Bridge shortly the B&O
mode will be enabled. This will be
confirmed in the log screen. To repeat
this process just disconnect the Bridge
from USB and connect it again.
6
Next the Bridge will list up all a ailable Wifi networks together with the encryption
type. The desired network should be listed as OPEN. The Bridge will now start
connecting to that network automatically. If there are multiple open networks you will
be asked one after another if the Bridge shall connect. You can select the networks by
pressing the front button in this case.
After a few seconds a connection has been established and the Bridge got an IP
address from the router. Now you can configure the security parameters. Also a name
can be assigned to the Bridge. This is useful if multiple Bridges are in use. On
Windows PCs the Bridge is e en a ailable under this name (plus trailing “/” character)
in the browser con eniently. Finally click on the set button to transfer the settings to
the Bridge. It will then disconnect from the network and start connecting right away,
this time with the security parameters assigned before. In the log screen this process
can be monitored.
The connection can be established only after the security settings ha e been re-
applied in the router. This should be done in the router configuration page now. The
bridge continues trying to connect until the connection can be established. With WPA2
enabled this can take up to 30 seconds because of the high encryption quality offered
by this algorithm.
Basic setup using ad-hoc mode
There is a second way to connect to the
Bridge. In this case it is not necessary to open
your Wifi network, but the PC must ha e a Wifi
card. This method is recommended for laptop
computers as these are mostly connected
wirelessly anyway.
The steps are the same as described before,
just lea e your Wifi network secured. The
bridge will list a ailable networks again. After
7
no open network could be found it will start ad-hoc mode. At the PC you will see a
new network called Wifi Bridge. Please make a double click on this network to start
connection.
After some seconds the Bridge should appear in Lightman Studio with the IP address
192.168.100.115. Now network parameters can be assigned as described before and
can be transmitted by clicking on the set button. The PC should reconnect to your
home network automatically afterwards. If not please trigger this process by clicking
on your network manually.
After some seconds (up to 30 seconds in case of WPA2) the Wifi Bridge should be
found again in Lightman Studio, this time with an IP address assigned by the router.
The connection process can be monitored in the log screen.
Uploading the web interface
To upload your customized web interface to the Bridge please select the web interface
tab. A click on the big button will start uploading the data to the bridge. After a few
seconds this process is finished and the Bridge is ready to use.
To open the interface it is sufficient to click on the browser button. This starts the
default browser and opens up the index page of the web interface. On smartphones
and tablets just enter the IP address of the Bridge in the address bar.
8
We recommend adding a bookmark to this site, so you don’t ha e to enter the IP
address again. Most de ices including Android and iOS allow putting a bookmark icon
on the desktop. This brings the same le el of comfort to the web interface as a
traditional app. Dependent on your launcher it is e en possible to select the icon for
this bookmark.
Authentication
To increase security of the web interface you can assign a username and password
optionally. For this purpose just enter this data on the same tab in Lightman Studio.
Finally press the start button again to upload the modified data. From now on the
browser will ask for username and password before access to the interface is granted.
Most browsers allow sa ing this data, so you don’t ha e to enter it each time.
In case you should forget this data the Bridge will show it on startup in the log screen.
All data including the network security parameters are stored in the Bridge
permanently, e en after power loss.
9
Access over the Internet
It is possible to access the Wifi Bridge from irtually all o er the world when an
Internet connection is a ailable. So you could turn on your coffee machine from the
office already for example.
For this purpose forward port 80 in the settings of your router to the bridge. The
target IP address has to be the address of the Wifi Bridge shown in Lightman Studio.
For test purposes you can disable Wifi in your smartphone and enter the IP address
you got from the ISP. With a little delay the web interface should show up if a GSM or
UMTS connection is a ailable.
Most DSL lines use dynamic IPs. This means that the IP address will change daily. To
keep access to your web interface anyway you will need a so called DynDns account.
There are certain pro iders which offer this ser ice free of cost. A well known pro ider
is www.no-ip.com for example. There you get a URL like myhouse.no-ip.com under
which the interface is reachable all time. Another well known pro ider is
www.dyndns.org. Unfortunately they started charging a yearly fee, but the ser ice
quality is excellent.
Modification of the web interface
Shortly more detailed information will be presented in our FAQ how to modify the web
interface. Just some basic information at this place.
The template for the creation of the interface is stored in the /html folder of the
Lightman Studio installation. When pressing the start button Lightman Studio loads
the template and generates the customized interface based on the currently loaded
configuration. The result is stored in the /html_temp folder before it is compressed
and uploaded to the Bridge. In contrast to the template the /html_temp folder
contains all light scenes, zones and actuators.
If you want to modify the interface we recommend to create a copy of the /teml_temp
folder after the first upload and store it in a different folder. Now the HTML and CSS
10
files can be altered by the user. Lightman Studio offers the possibility to select a
source folder for the web data. Here you select your newly created folder and from
now on this will be used when uploading data to the Bridge.
Information for developers
In the web space of the bridge there is a file called config.xml. This includes all zones,
light scenes and actuators, together with strings for all commands a ailable for each
actuator and light scene. It is sufficient to send a http-request with this string to the
Bridge in order to execute a command or to trigger a light scene. So you can easily
create your own software resp. app to control the Bridge. More detailed information
can be found shortly in the FAQ section of your homepage.
Firmware-Update
The Wifi Bridge supports firmware updates. It can be expected that more functions
will be added to the Bridge in course of time. For this purpose there is the tab
firmware update in the Wifi Bridge options of Lightman Studio. In most cases the
update can be done o er-the-air. In case this process does not work properly, maybe
because UDP traffic is restricted in your network, you can attach the Light-Manager
and the bridge to the PC. Then the log screen will show detailed information during
the update procedure and it should be possible easily to find out where it hangs.
Trouble shooting
If the Wifi Bridge does not connect to a specific network mostly one of the following
reasons are the cause:
1. The 802.11 b mode is not acti ated. Please check the settings of your router.
For test purposes it can be helpful to temporarily set it to pure 802.11 b
mode. Some routers offer an auto mode. This should not be used, especially
in the test phase. We recommend mixed 802.11 b/g or b/g/n mode.
11
2. The network security does not match the settings stored in the Bridge. We
recommend to use pure WPA2 mode with AES encryption
3. The SSID must be isible. Turning off SSID is not recommended, especially
as it does not offer any le el of security. The SSID can be read out easily by
anybody with basic network tools e en if set in isible.
4. Especially in the test phase whether the SSID neither the WPA2 password
should contain special characters. The Bridge supports special characters.
Ne ertheless it can be that the Bridge or the router does not handle all
special characters the same way. Routers ha e often not been tested will
special characters which are not used in the English language area.
Enjoy the new le el of comfort the Wifi Bridge brings to your home in conjunction with
the Light-Manager.
