Audio Amplifiers—Audio Amplifiers (AA-30) 3
Introduction
The AA-30 Audio Amplifier provides 30 watts of audio power compatible
with 25 VRMS speakers. Speaker zone selection is performed by an
XPC-8 transponder or M500CJ/M510CJ control module in
IFC-1010/2020 systems. Speaker zones may be up to 30 watts each, but
are limited to ten speakers per M510CJ control module employed. The
indicating appliance circuit for XPC-8 modules does not have a speaker
limit.
The AA-30 has a set of normally open trouble contacts for built-in
supervision. The contacts close to report an input power brownout, loss of
batteries, failure of audio output wiring (if configured for 4-wire output),
or amplifier failure. Individual LEDs signal each source of trouble to aid
in troubleshooting. During total loss of primary power, all LEDs are
extinguished to conserve battery power. An AA-30 can also be configured
as a backup amplifier for one or more AA-30s. In the event of an
amplifier failure, backup amplifier switching is automatic.

Installation Procedures
The AA-30 mounts in a CHS-4L Chassis. Two AA-30s can be placed side
by side in a CHS-4L. The AA-30 may be mounted either in the same
cabinet as the AMG-1 or in a remote cabinet.
See Figure 1 for more information on installing the AA-30.

Step 1
Install the CHS-4L chassis in each row of the cabinet that will employ AA-30
audio amplifiers. For proper grounding of the AA-30 audio amplifiers to the
cabinet, connect a grounding cable to one of the chassis mounting screws as
illustrated.
Step 2
Position the lower end of the AA-30 audio
amplifier into the slot in the bottom of the
CHS-4L chassis.
Step 3
Secure the AA-30 audio amplifer to the
CHS-4L with the washers and nuts
provided.

terminal assignments on the back board as well as the over all chassis
layout. Figure 3 shows the termination assignments on the front board.

connected to each AA-30. You must also provide some means of
charging the batteries.

Notes: The audio output (Terminals 5 and 6 of P8 or P6) is not supervised.
Looping the audio output and connecting the return circuit to
Terminals 2 and 3 of P8 or P7 provides supervision unless the
audio output is wired Style Z by returning (looping) the audio
output circuit to Terminals 1, 2, and 3 on P8. Therefore, the
speaker circuit control device (XPC-8 or M510CJ) must be located
in the same cabinet as the amplifier.

The Audio Gain Level multi-position rotary switch allows you to adjust
the gain of the audio output signal to compensate for audio line losses.
After you have made the correct adjustment, the AA-30 Audio Amplifier
produces its maximum rated output power at 25 VRMS. After installing
all of the AA-30 amplifiers, follow this procedure:
Use a small slotted screwdriver to position the rotary switch until the
Normal Level LED on the AA-30 is lit and the Incorrect Level LED turns
off. Once this is achieved, the audio gain is properly adjusted. See the
figure below.
Speaker Trouble LED
An open circuit condition in the 4-wire speaker loop.
Amplifier Trouble LED
Loss of the audio input signal or trouble in the audio in or audio
out circuitry.
Battery Trouble LED
The secondary (DC) power source has fallen below a suffficient
voltage level.
Brownout LED
The primary (AC) power source has fallen below a sufficient level.
Note: During a complete loss of AC, no LEDs will light on the AA-30.
Incorrect Level LED
During normal (non-alarm) conditions, this LED indicates that
the AA-30 is out of adjustment. When this LED is on and the
Normal Level LED is off, the audio level has been adjusted too
low. When both this LED and the Normal Level LED are on, the
audio level has been adjusted too high.
Normal Level LED
During normal (non-alarm) conditions, when this green LED is
on and the Incorrect Level LED is off, the AA-30 is adjusted
properly and operating correctly.

The amplified audio output circuit is not supervised if configured as
Style Y (2-wire). Supervision is unnecessary, in most jurisdictions, if the
amplified audio wiring is contained within an enclosure such as a
transponder. If the amplified (high level) audio wiring extends outside the
transponder, it should be supervised.
To enable supervision of the audio output circuit, configure it as Style Z
(4-wire) by cutting resistors R8 and R9 on the AA-30 amplifier. The two
resistors, R8 and R9, are located right below P6 on the AA-30 as shown in
Figure 5.
