Li5k Base-S Product Manual
Thank you for purchasing a Joule Case Li5k Base-S Battery System.
It has been engineered to exacting specications and we trust it will
provide many years of trouble-free operation. Please read this guide
thoroughly and observe the safety precautions below.
Safety Precautions
⚠
Installation should be done by qualied personnel in
accordance with applicable electrical codes.
⚠
Do not reverse battery polarity.
⚠
Do not connect batteries in series.
⚠
Ensure charger / inverter is programmed with the
correct charge voltage. (No higher than 54.5VDC).
⚠
Ensure proper cable sizes are used.
⚠
Apply appropriately sized over-current protection (fuse
or circuit breaker) between the output and the load.
⚠
Do not connect solar panels directly to the battery.
⚠
Battery should be turned off when making connections.
⚠
Keep the battery away from ammable materials and
sources of ignition.
⚠
Do not connect battery in parallel with other battery
brands or types.
⚠
Do not expose the battery to precipitation or extreme
temperatures.
⚠
Team lift the battery. It is heavy.
⚠
Use insulated tools.

BASIC Operation
Your battery should arrive in the “OFF” state. If the battery
is not in the ”OFF” state as indicated by the ashing Run
Indicator ( ), you should turn the battery off before
making any connections.
The battery may be turned off by pressing the ON/OFF
Reset Switch ( ) on the front panel and holding for 3
seconds. The LEDs will ash in sequence and then go out
as the battery enters the “OFF” state.
With the battery in the “OFF” state, connect battery
terminals to the load and/or charger, making sure to
observe correct polarity, i.e. connect positive (+) to positive
and negative (-) to negative, and using the appropriate
wire size for the application. It is recommended that an
appropriately sized circuit breaker or fuse be placed
between the battery and the load/charger.
Turn on battery by momentarily pressing the ON/OFF Reset
Switch ( ) . The front panel LEDs will light in sequence
indicating that the battery is on. Your battery is equipped
with a 2 second soft-start feature that prevents a large
current surge when connected to capacitive loads such as
power inverters.

About Warnings and Protections
Your Joule Case battery is equipped with a Battery
Management System (BMS) that continuously monitors
voltage, current, temperature, state-of-charge and state-
of-health of the battery.
Should a condition occur where voltage, current or
temperature begins to approach the design limits of
the battery, the BMS will set a warning ag, the red LED
“warning” indicator on the front panel will ash. The
warning condition will automatically clear when the BMS
detects that the conditions that caused the alarm have
cleared.
If conditions of voltage, current, or temperature exceed
the design limits of the battery, a protection ag will be
set, and the battery will stop discharging or charging,
depending on the nature of the fault. For example, an over-
voltage protection condition will prevent the battery from
charging. Upon discharging to an appropriate level, the
protection condition will clear.
Your Joule Case battery is programmed to generate a
capacity warning when the BMS detects that capacity
has fallen below 10% state-of-charge (SOC). Charging the
battery above 10% SOC will clear this warning condition.

CAN and RS485 Communication
Your Joule Case Battery Management System (BMS)
is equipped with RS485 and CAN bus interfaces for
connection to certain inverters, and to a PC for monitoring
battery functions. In most cases, use of these functions
requires special software and installation expertise that
is beyond the scope of this manual. You may contact your
installer or Joule Case directly for more information about
use of these interfaces.
