2 Basic Information (General)
2.1 Proper use
The transponder card reader purchased by you is used to login the respective user to
the connected balance.
The transponder card reader is designed exclusively for
connection to the KERN balance mentioned below:

2.2 Improper Use
Never operate the transponder card reader in an explosive environment. The serial
version is not explosion protected.
Changes to the transponder card reader's design are not permitted. This may result
in incorrect display results, safety-related defects as well as destruction.
The transponder card reader may only be operated in accordance with the described
default settings. Other areas of use must be released by KERN in writing.
2.3 Warranty
Warranty claims shall be voided in case
•Our conditions in the operation manual are ignored
•The appliance is used outside the described uses
•The appliance is modified or opened
•Mechanical damage and damage caused by media, liquids,
natural wear and tear
•The appliance is improperly set up or incorrectly electrically connected
3 Basic Safety Precautions
3.1 Pay attention to the instructions in the Operation Manual
Carefully read this operation manual before setup and
commissioning, even if you are already familiar with KERN balances.
All language versions contain a non-binding translation.
The original German document is binding.
3.2 Personnel training
The appliance may only be operated and maintained by trained personnel.

4 Transport and storage
4.1 Testing upon acceptance
When receiving the appliance, please check packaging immediately, and the
appliance itself when unpacking for possible visible damage.
4.2 Packaging/return transport
Keep all parts of the original packaging for a possibly
required return.
Only use original packaging for returning.
Prior to dispatch disconnect all cables and remove
loose/mobile parts.
Reattach possibly supplied transport securing devices.
5 Unpacking, Setup and Commissioning
5.1 Installation Site, Location of Use
The unit is designed to achieve reliable display results under normal conditions of
use.
Therefore, observe the following for the installation site:
•Protect the appliance against high humidity, vapours and dust;
•Do not expose the device to extreme dampness for longer periods of time.
Non-permitted condensation (condensation of air humidity on the appliance)
may occur if a cold appliance is taken to a considerably warmer environment.
In this case, acclimatize the disconnected appliance for ca. 2 hours at room
temperature.
•Avoid static charge.
Major display deviations (incorrect weighing results) may be experienced should
electromagnetic fields (e.g. due to mobile phones or radio equipment), static
electricity accumulations or instable power supply occur. Change location or remove
source of interference.

5.2 Unpacking
Remove the reader carefully from the packaging, take off the plastic sleeve and put
the transponder card reader together with the balance in the designated space or
attach it to the wall.

5.2.1 Scope of delivery

•Connecting cable to balance
•Operating manual
5.3 Electric Supply
Power is supplied via the connected balance.
5.4 Connection to the balance
Disconnect the balance from the mains before connecting the transponder card
reader or disconnecting the transponder card reader to or from the balance.
This transponder card reader is exclusively suitable for the connection to KERN
balances.
5.5 Initial Commissioning
Plug the enclosed connecting cable into the I/O terminal on the balance.
Power is supplied via the balance. The transponder card reader does not have
a power supply unit.
Switch on balance
The balance will launch a self-test and afterwards change to “0.0“ display.
The LED under the - symbol on the transponder card reader will be lit up
red.
The transponder card reader is now ready for operation.

5.6 Overview of display
Display Designation Description
1 Info Info display The LED under the i- symbol will be on when
data is transferred from the transponder card
reader to the balance.
2 On / Off Power display The LED under the - symbol will be on
when the connection between the transponder
card reader and the balance is correctly
installed.

6 Operation
First adjust on the balance the following:
Select Port:
In the display select „Devices“
Select Transponder card reader
Select Port RS 232(2)
Select baud rate:
In the display select „Communication“
Select Port RS 232(2)
Adjust the following:
oSpeed: 9600
oData bit: 8
oStop bit: 1
oParity none
Install card-reader:
Plug the enclosed connecting cable into the I/O terminal on the balance.
Switch on balance
Go to the balance and login as “admin”.
Select menu item “data bases“
Select “user“, then select “admin“ and “card number“
Swipe the card across the reader and confirm on the balance
This card is now allocated to “admin“ user only
Login by card:
Switch on balance
Go to weighing mode and swipe the card across the reader;
the LED under the i-symbol will light up briefly and you will hear a beep
The user is now logged-in as “admin“
Repeat these steps for each user you have created

7 Servicing, maintenance, disposal
7.1 Cleaning
Before cleaning, please disconnect the appliance from the operating voltage.
Please do not use aggressive cleaning agents (solvents or similar agents), but a
cloth dampened with mild soap suds. Ensure that no liquid penetrates into the device
and wipe with a dry soft cloth.
7.2 Servicing, maintenance
The appliance may only be opened by trained service technicians who are authorized
by KERN.
Before opening, disconnect from power supply.
7.3 Disposal
Disposal of packaging and appliance must be carried out by operator according to
valid national or regional law of the location where the appliance is used.
8 Instant help
In case of an error in the program process, briefly turn off the appliance and
disconnect from power supply. The process must then be restarted from the
beginning.
