PRECAUTIONS
TUBES ARE HOT ! Make sure you allow the tubes in your amplifier to ool down before
handling them. They are also made of glass and an easily break. Wear safety gloves and
goggles when handling audio tubes.
ALWAYS: operate the Komet19 with the orre t tube types listed in this owner’s manual.
ALWAYS: make ertain that your AC power able is unplugged when repla ing any fuse.
NEVER: repla e the Mains or H.T. fuse with a higher rated fuse! This will most ertainly
ause severe damage to your amplifier.
NEVER: use a shielded guitar or instrument able as a speaker able onne tion.
NEVER: operate any amp without a speaker load onne ted to the output ja k(s).
ALWAYS: use a three pronged, grounded power able and only plug into a properly grounded
outlet. Failure to do so may result in injury or death.
DO NOT OPEN UP THE AMPLIFIER ! There are no user servi eable parts inside. There
are lethal voltages present even when unplugged.
ALWAYS UN-PLUG YOUR AMPLIFER WHEN YOU ARE DONE ! This is to prote t
your amplifier from surges in ele tri al power, or transient voltage. The standard Ameri an
home voltage is 120 Volts. Anything over this amount is onsidered transient and an damage
ele troni devi es that are plugged into an AC outlet. Even though power surges are so brief
that they are measured in nanose onds, they an ause onsiderable damage to ele troni
equipment. Ele tri al surges an damage equipment by burning or fusing internal wires or by
gradually, over time, wearing down the devi e’s internal omponents. The best w y to prevent
d m ge is to unplug your mplifier when not in use.
NOTE: Devi es su h as refrigerators and air onditioners require large amounts of energy to
swit h motors and ompressors on and off. Su h devi es an reate surges in power that disrupt
the steady flow of line voltage. Lightning, faulty wiring, downed power lines and faulty
equipment at the power sour e ( utility ompany ) an all ause power surges as well.
ALWAYS: keep your amplifier and / or speaker abinet in a limate ontrolled setting. Failure
to do so an be problemati . The tolex on your amplifier head box abinet an shift and shrink
in the Summer, espe ially if you leave your amplifier for an extended time in a sun heated ar,
trunk, trailer, or an extremely hot and un-air onditioned room. This is due to the glue used to
apply the tolex to the wooden head box abinet. The glue will be ome slightly molten from the
ex essive heat whi h will make the tolex movable and shrink. Ex essive heat an only ause
this tolex situation and this is not overed under your Komet warranty.

THANK YOU FOR PURCHASING THE KOMET 19 AMPLIFIER
The Komet19 is a straightforward and easy to operate amplifier. This manual is intended to
help you “ get to know “ your Komet amplifier, and how to make use of the many different
sounds whi h it is apable of.
FRONT CONTROL PANEL LAYOUT ( left to right ):
1. Input J ck: a epts standard ¼ in h plug. Input impedan e is 1 Megohm.
2. Bright Switch: Three way sele tor swit h. Middle position is off. Down position –
bright. Up position – most bright.
3. Volume Control : adjusts ( lo kwise ) the overall level and gain of the amplifier.
4. S tur tion Control : a gain ontrol that in reases the guitar signal from natural lean into a
smooth harmoni overdrive range. Please keep in mind that the effe t of this ontrol
is interdependent with the setting of the amplifier’s volume ontrol.
5. Tone Control: adjusts ( lo kwise ) the low to high end range of frequen y equalization.
Experiment with this ontrol to find the settings that best suit your playing style.
6. Pilot Light: illuminates when power swit h is in “ ON ” position. The pilot light uses a type
# 47 ( 6.3 Volt ) light bulb. ( See trouble shooting se tion for repla ement instru tions ).
7. St ndby Switch: allow the amp to warm up for 60 se onds before engaging the standby
swit h to the play position. This a tion allows for the tubes’ filaments to heat up to the
proper voltage required for operation. This pro edure will prolong the lifespan of the
amplifier’s tubes.
8. Power Switch: engages the AC wall power to the amplifier.

BACK CONTROL PANEL LAYOUT ( left to right ):
1. AC Input Recept cle: This IEC ja k a epts standard DIN AC power able. All
Komet amplifiers an be modified to operate on either 120V or 240V. Please inquire
with KometAmplifi ation for onversion information.
2. M ins Fuse Holder: 2 Amp slow-blow fuse ( a.k.a. MDL 2A ) ( size: ¼ in h by 1 and ¼
in h ) on 120V model, 1 Amp slow-blow fuse on 240V model. CAUTION: ALWAYS
UN-PLUG YOUR AC POWER CABLE FROM YOUR AMPLIFIER BEFORE
REPLACING A FUSE.
3. H.T. Fuse ( High Tension ): ½ mp or 500mA fast a ting fuse ( a.k.a. AGC 500mA )
( size: ¼ in h by 1 and ¼ in h ). CAUTION: NEVER REPLACE A FUSE WITH A
HIGHER RATED FUSE. Using a fuse rated higher than the manufa turer’s
re ommendation will most cert inly ause severe damage to your amplifier.
4. Output Imped nce Selector: set this sele tor a ording to the appropriate speaker
impedan e you are using. 4, 8, and 16 Ohm settings are available.
5. Spe ker Output J cks: Standard ¼ in h speaker ja ks, wired in parallel, whi h will
a ommodate any standard quality speaker able. Note: never use a shielded guitar able
for a speaker able. You an severely damage an amplifier.
6. Tube Ch rt: Displays the pla ement of the power and pre amp tubes.
TUBE CHOICES FOR THE KOMET19
The Komet19 was designed and voi ed to utilize urrent produ tion tubes to their maximum
potential. CAUTION: Always allow the power and pre amp tubes to ool down before
handling them. They are made of glass and an easily break. Wear safety goggles and heat
prote tive gloves when handling hot tubes. Never remove or repla e the power or pre amp
tubes while an amplifier is on.
V1 and V2 are the Sovtek 12AX7 LPS or the re-issue Sovtek Mullard 12AX7. The LPS is an
ex ellent sounding 12AX7 and are used in all Komet amplifier models. The sto k power tubes
( V3 and V4 ) are a mat hed pair of Sovtek EL 84 / 6BQ5s. This is a widely available and
reliable power tube. Both the power and pre amp tubes are se ured to the tube so kets by wire
retainers that easily slide ba k and on ea h tube. We re ommend, during a tube repla ement,
that you repla e one tube at a time - as to not a identally entangle the wire retainers. ( ontinued )

With this fa tory sto k tube ompliment, the Komet19 sounds powerful, omplex and detailed.
The distortion is balan ed and harmoni ally ri h. Other brands of audio tubes will operate in
your Komet19. But there are mu h better tubes available than the sto k, modern available
tubes. If you want more info, read on…..
In the Golden Age of tube te hnology ( 1950’s, 60’s and early 70’s ), - virtually all tubes were
manufa tured by European or Ameri an ompanies su h as Mullard, Brimar, Amperex,
Telefunken, Valvo, Tung-Sol, RCA, and others. Unfortunately, all of these ompanies have
dis ontinued audio tube produ tion. Very few of these brands remain available from military
sto k, repair shops, et . These tubes are generally referred to as “ New - Old Stock ” a.k.a.
N.O.S.
The best of the n.o.s. tubes are in every aspe t superior to any urrently modern manufa tured
tube. N.O.S. tubes are very expensive and rapidly disappearing. You may de ide that they are
worth the expenditure. You may not want to use them for pra ti ing, but save them for
re ording and important performan es. The improvement gained by a proper tube sele tion is
quite noti eable in a refined amplifier su h as the Komet. Remember: always pur hase from
a reputable n.o.s. tube dealer. The following ontains brand re ommendations based on our
experien e.
Mull rd / V lvo EL 84 / 6BQ5 The yardsti k used most to measure all EL 84s by. Many
were manufa tured and distributed under different brands or labels. Their internal onstru tion
and soni quality are superior to modern available EL84s. Valvo, Mullard, Brimar, Amperex,
& Telefunkin are ex ellent n.o.s. hoi es. Note: PLEASE CAREFULLY READ the Bi sing
Section on next page of this manual.
ECC 83, 12AX7, 7025, and CV4004 are inter hangeable. There are many brands to hoose
from. The tone and larity an vary between ea h of these tube types and brands. We generally
prefer the European brands: Telefunkens, Brimars, Mullards, Amperex, Phillips Mini Watts,
et . Please keep in kind that ea h amplifier has its own personality that may be omplimented
by a spe ifi brand or sele tion of audio tubes. You may want to resear h for more information
on n.o.s. tubes before you make a pur hasing de ision. Note: when pur hasing, be areful not
to onfuse modern re-issue audio tubes, like the re-issue Mullard, Tung Sol, Genelex, et ., with
original and more expensive n.o.s. audio tubes.
Ple se note: that some new, used, or even n.o.s. preamp tubes an be “ microphonic “. A
mi rophoni tube is a ondition in whi h a tube will absorb me hani al vibration and amplify it
into the audible range. In the worst ase s enario this an mean that the tube will “ feed b ck ”,
or give off a loud, high pit hed squealing noise. Feed ba k an o ur intermittently, even
without an instrument plugged into the input of the amp. This does not mean that the tube(s) are
ompletely unusable. One possible solution you an experiment with is: try reversing V1 to the
V2 phase inverter so ket where mi rophoni s are not as noti eable. The V2 position 12AX7
may be quieter in the V1 position. ( ontinued )

onsent from Riverfront Musi , L.L.C. d.b.a. KometAmplifi ation.

Ple se note: a small amount of “ hiss “ is normal for high gain amplifiers. An ex essive amount
of hiss, espe ially when the volume ontrol of the amplifier is all the way down and with no
instrument plugged in the amplifier’s input, usually denotes a bad pre amp tube. Some n.o.s.
audio tube suppliers offer “ select “, or hand pi ked pre amp tubes, whi h are superior in all
aspe ts of quality, espe ially when it omes to being quiet and non-mi rophoni .
Ple se p y close ttention when extra ting and installing the power and pre amp tubes. The
pins must align perfe tly into the tube’s so ket. Bent tube pins, espe ially when for ed into a
tube so ket, an ause serious damage to an amplifier’s tube so ket pin inserts. This results
99% of the time with the tube so ket needing repla ement. To avoid this ontingen y, we
re ommend that you pur hase a miniature pinned, nine holed, pre amp tube pin straightener.
These an be found on line from many vintage tube retailers. This easy to use devi e guarantees
that your pre amp tube and EL 84 power tube pins will be straight and aligned for so ket
insertion.
NOTE: KometAmplifi ation’s Warranty will not over damage done to a tube so ket’s
insertion pins from for ed or a idental mis-alignment / and or bent / rimped insertion pins.
BIASING THE KOMET19
The Komet19 is a athode biased amplifier ( no bias adjustment should be ne essary ). An
internal resistor sets the amplifier’s power tube bias. To guarantee your amp will operate
properly in onjun tion with the supplied voltages and urrent draw of the Komet19, we
re ommend that when you repla e your power tubes, that you pur hase a m tched pair of
EL 84s / 6BQ5s with a low IP ( or a low urrent draw ) grade / onfiguration.
Most reliable and reputable audio tube vendors and n.o.s. tube dealers sell their power tubes in
m tched, output power or urrent draw - numeri ally rated - sets. You should be able to
request a ertain IP grade or range from your tube vendor. Some ex mples: the Sovtek / New
Sensor EL 84 grade for the Komet19 is an IP number range from # 12 through # 16. Groove
Tube's s ale for the K 19 is a grade # 1 or # 2. Note: the 12AX7 pre amp tubes in your
amplifier are internally self biased and need no adjustment.
SPEAKERS FOR THE KOMET19
The Komet19 is a big sounding amp. It is voi ed for a sparkling lean sound at low volumes,
and a smooth, dynami - harmoni overdrive and strong midrange pun h. In our opinion, these
hara teristi s are best omplimented with a losed ba k, ( preferably vintage ) 4 X 12 speaker
abinet. Our favorite referen e speakers for Komet amplifiers in general are original oned,
vintage 12 in h Celestion speakers from the 1960’s. You may ome to a different on lusion,
depending on your playing style and preferen es. ( ontinued )

onsent from Riverfront Musi , L.L.C. d.b.a. KometAmplifi ation.

A 2 X 12 abinet, ( open or losed ba k ), is another ex ellent hoi e, but are should be taken to
sele t speakers that an handle the power, low end, and atta k. The KometAmplifi ation
speaker abinet lineup is another ex ellent option. Please see our website
www.komet mps.com for full speaker abinet information. Whi hever abinet you do use,
make sure you set the imped nce selector correctly. If you use two abinets, keep in mind
that the outputs are in parallel. This means that if you are operating the amplifier on two, 16
Ohm abinets, you must set the amplifier’s impedan e sele tor to the 8 Ohm setting. If you
operating on two 8 Ohm abinets, set the sele tor to 4 Ohms. We do not re ommend using two
4 Ohm abinets. Speaker wiring diagrams are lo ated at the end of this owner’s manual.
NOTE: KometAmplifi ation RECOMMENDS RESISTIVE LOAD ATTENUATION DEVICES in
onjun tion with any Komet amplifier and speaker abinet.
TROUBLESHOOTING
When troubleshooting a problem, we re ommend that you remove all effe ts pedals and only go
dire t with your guitar and guitar able into the amplifier. Also, remove any attenuation devi e
from your amplifier to speaker abinet signal hain. This way you an easily and qui kly rule
out or dis over if your amplifier is the sour e of the problem.
Pilot Light Not On:
Che k to see if the amplifier’s AC able is plugged in at wall and plugged in at the IEC
onne tion on the ba k panel of the amp. Make sure the DIN AC able plug is se urely inserted
into the IEC AC input onne tion, and pushed in all the way.
Che k the type 47 pilot light bulb. It may be burned out. For bulb repla ement, gently turn the
jewel lens ap ounter lo kwise and remove. Using the tips of your fingers, gently push and
turn the exposed bulb ounter lo kwise, extra t bulb and repla e. Note: your amplifier will
ontinue to operate with no problem with a shorted bulb or with no bulb at all.
Che k the 2 amp “ slow blow “ AC supply M ins fuse to see if it is blown. Repla e the blown
fuse with a new 2 amp slow blow ( a.k.a. MDL 2A 250V ) or a 1 amp slow blow for a 240V
model. ALWAYS - make ertain that your AC power able is unplugged when repla ing any
fuse.
M ins Fuse “ blowing “:
Unplug amplifier from the wall AC. Remove the power tubes ( see pre autions se tion ). Install
a new 2 Amp slow blow fuse ( 1 Amp slow blow 240V ). Plug into the wall AC and turn the amp
on ( with no power tubes in the so kets ).

If the mains fuse ontinues to blow, your amp will need to be servi ed. If the fuse does not
blow, and the amp lights up, turn amp off, and install a new set of mat hed EL 84 power tubes.
Turn the amp ba k on. If the fuse does not blow, play the amp and monitor.
Amp Lights Up - No Sound:
Che k the speaker onne tion at ba k of amp and at the input of the speaker abinet.
Bypass all pedals and effe ts and plug your guitar into only the amplifier.
Che k the guitar able and / or try another guitar.
Che k the power and the pre amp tubes and make sure that they are installed orre tly and that
the filaments within ea h tube are lit. Sometimes audio tubes an look operational - ( with the
filaments lit ) - but be defe tive in not passing signal.
Che k / test / repla e - the H.T. fuse for ontinuity with a digital Ohm meter. It may be blown.
Amp is “ Humming “, “ Hissing “ , h s “ Feedb ck “ or m kes “ Cr ckling “ sound:
This is most likely a bad pre amp tube. Pre amp tubes an develop problems over their life
span. They may be operating flawlessly, and they may also test fine on a tube tester, but for
what appears like for no reason, an suddenly begin to make a “ hissing “ sound, or develop
filament “ humming “ noise, or make a “ cr ckling “ sound. They an also begin to feedba k
or have mi rophoni or “ ringing “ symptoms. ( See previous se tion titled: ECC 83, 12AX7, 7025,
and CV4004 ) Unfortunately, you may have to repla e one of more of your pre amp tubes. This
is another reason we stress pur hasing n.o.s. tubes.
Fluores ent and neon lights, rheostat wall dimmers, and some applian es may ause your amp
to ontain a “ hum “ or “ buzz “ sound. An internally shorted guitar able or using a speaker
able for a guitar able an also reate a “ buzz “ sound through your amp. Over time, the input
ja k may o asionally make a " cr ckle " sound when you extra t your instrument able from
the front panel of your amp. This would require that the inside of the input ja k be leaned
professionally. We re ommend using DeoxIT® GOLD G5.

Under-bi sed Power Tubes:
EL 84 / 6BQ5 power tubes that are under biased, ( or drawing to mu h urrent ), will usually
reate the following symptom: a low, ba kground “ hum “ sound oming from the amp, whi h
may get louder over time. Inspe t the plates of the power tubes ( the flat grey olored, metalli ,
square se tion inside the center of the power tube/s ). Do not onfuse the yellow / orange filament
glow on the top and bottom of the power tubes for the enter plates. If the plates in the enter of
the tube are glowing a dull “ red “ or are “ cherry colored “ from the enter, ( see referen e
photo below ), then the power tubes are under biased and will need to be repla ed with a lower
( IP ) urrent drawing set. If not repla ed, they will fail and “ short out “ in short order, and the
H.T. fuse will blow.

TUBE REPLACEMENT FOR THE KOMET19
Before you install your tubes, please read the last paragraph from the se tion: TUBE CHOICES
FOR THE KOMET AMPLIFIER
Uns rew ( in small in rements ) the two, ba k panel insertion s rews. Remove the ba k panel
evenly with two hands. Use the reverse instru tions when installing the Komet19 head ba k
panel.
You will find the tube pla ement hart on the ba k panel of you amp. There are four tube
so kets in total. These so kets are miniature nine pin pre amp tube so ket types. Follow the
pla ement of the four tubes by referring to the tube hart.
Make sure the amplifier’s tubes have ooled down suffi iently before handling the amplifier’s
tubes. V1 and V 2 are the 12AX7 pre amp tubes. V3 and V4 are the EL84 / 6BQ5 power tubes.
The tubes are se ured to the tube so ket by wire retainers that easily slide ba k and on ea h
tube. Note: we re ommend that you repla e one tube at a time as not to a identally entangle
ea h tube’s wire retainers. C ution: always use a tube glove when handling hot tubes.
Gently install ea h tube in the orre t orresponding tube so ket. Please note ea h tube‘s pin
onfiguration must be properly and perfe tly aligned with the tube so ket for installation. Do
not for e a tube into its so ket. If orre tly aligned, it should easily install into the so ket.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE KOMET19 COMBO
The K 19 ombo, s with ny b ck p nel mount combo, will be prone to mi rophoni pre
amp tube problems over time. This is due to the onstru tion and nature of the amplifier
mounting. We re ommend, when repla ing tubes, pur hasing pre-tested ( for mi rophoni s ) pre
amp tubes from a reputable tube dealer.
TUBE REPLACEMENT FOR THE KOMET19 COMBO
The following information is for the more me hani ally advan ed user. Please bring your
ombo amp to a qualified te hni ian if you do not feel omfortable with the following
pro edure.
Unplug amp from the wall. Make sure the tubes of the amp have ooled down suffi iently
before handling. Note: always wear a tube glove and safety glasses when handling audio tubes.
Lay the ombo down fa e forward on a flat, lean soft surfa e like a arpet or on the floor
prote ted by a thi k towel.

Ex essive heat an only ause
this tolex situation and this is not overed under your Komet warrant
