Introduction Definition of Terms
Thank you for your purchase of the Krell
KAV-300r Stereo Receiver with Theater
Throughput. The KAV-300r gives the audio-
phile an exceptional-sounding, two-channel
musicsystemin a convenientpackagethat can
standaloneor easily beintegratedinto a multi-
componentsystem. Thetuner combinesstrong
reception and quality soundwith transparent
functioning and can be operated through the
front panel or the remote. Six programmable
tuner presets allow instant selection of your
favorite AMor FMstations. TheFMmuteand
high frequencyblendfeatures also let youcon-
trol background and between-station noise
whenselecting FMstations with weakerbroad-
castsignals.
TheTheaterThroughputfeature simplifies the
integration of an audio/video surround sound
processor into your system. Theremotepro-
vides convenient operation of-the KAV-300r
and other Krell KAVcomponents.
This owner’s reference manualcontains impor-
tant informationonplacement,installation, and
operation of the KAV-300r. Please read this
information carefully. A thoroughunderstanding
of thesedetails will help ensuresatisfactory
operation andlong life for your KAV-300rand
related systemcomponents.
Followingare the definitions of keytermsused
in your owner’sreference manual.
CONFIGURATIONS
Theater Throughput

INPUT AND OUTPUTCONNECTIONS
Balanced
A symmetricalinput or output circuit that has
equal impedancefromboth input terminals to a
commonground reference point. Theindustry
standardfor professional andsoundrecording
installations, balancedconnectionshave6 dB
moregain than single-ended connections and
allow the use of long interconnect cables.
Balancedco0nections are completely immuneto
inducednoise from the systemor the environ-
ment.
Single-ended
A two-wireinput or outputcircuit. Usecarewhen
using single-ended connectionsas the ground
connectionis madelast andbrokenfirst. Turnthe
systemoff prior to makingor breaking single-
endedconnections. Single-ended connections
are not recommendedfor connectionsrequiring

Placement
Before you integrate the KAV-300rinto your
system, review the following to properly place
your component. This will facilitate a clean,
trouble-freeinstallation.
Forinstallations inside cabinetry,extra ventila-
tion maybe necessary. TheKAV-300rrequires
at least twoinches(5 cm)of clearanceoneach
side andat least twoinches(5 cm)of clearance
above to provide adequateventilation. The
KAV-300rdoesnot require a special rack or
cabinet for installation. For the dimensionsof
the KAV-300r,see Specifications, on the back
cover.
TheKAV-300ris not particularly hum-sensitive.
Other componentsmaybe placed on or around
the KAV-300r,as long as the ventilation grids
remainunobstructed.
Note
Sometelevisions andfluorescer~tlights generate
highlevels of AMradiation, whichcaninterfere
with AMreception. Electro-magnetic radiation
from someradio receiving and transmitting
equipment(suchas televisions, videorecorders,
digital equipment, and computers) can also
causenoiseandinterference.
Place the KAV-300ras close to the speakersas
possible. Runlong balancedinterconnect cables
to the receiverandkeepspeakercablelengthsto
a minimum.Speakercable adds impedanceto
the loadtheamplifiermustdrive, regardlessof the
cable gauge.
AC POWERGUIDELINES
TheKAV-300rhas superb regulation and does
not require a dedicatedACcircuit. Avoidcon-
nectionsthroughextensioncordsor multiple AC
adapters. High quality 15 ampgrounded AC
strips areacceptable.Highquality ACline con-
ditioners or filters maybe usedif they are
groundedand meetor exceedthe component’s
powersupplyrating of 400VA.
Power Cord
TheKAV-300rshould be operatedonly with the
power cord supplied. Please contact your
authorized Krell dealer, distributor, or Krell
before using anydevices designedto alter or
stabilize the ACpowerfor the KAV-300r.

Connecting the KAV-300r
to Your System
To prevent the introduction of humor other
noiseinto the system,organizeall wiring neatly
betweenthe KAV-300rand other systemcom-
ponents and separate ACwires from audio
cables.
TheKAV-300ruses standard binding posts for
each amplifier, channel. These connectors
acceptbare wire, bananaplugs, pins, or spade
lugs. Usethe red terminal for the positive con-
nection andthe black terminal for the negative
connection.
Connectthe speakercables to the left (22)
andright (21) amplifier channeloutput ter-
minalslocated on the backpanel.
Connectthe left andright outputs of your
source componentsto the analog inputs
(27) on the KAV-300r.
Plug the ACpowercord into the IECpower
receptacle(30) on the KAV-300rbackpanel.
Plug the remaining end into the ACwall
receptacle. Thered stand-byLED(1) onthe
front panelilluminates.
TheKAV-300ris equippedwith oneset of bal-
ancedinputs (B-l) via XLRconnectors,threesets
of single-endedinputs (S-1, S-2, andS-3) via
RCAconnectors, andonetape input andoutput
loop via RCAconnectors.Anybalancedor single-
ended input maybe configured for Theater
Throughput. SeeOptional Configurations,on
page18.
Krell recommendsusing balancedinterconnect
cables. Balancedinterconnect cables can mini-
mize sonic loss and are immuneto induced
noise, especially for installations using long
cables. Thebalancedconnectionhas6 dBmore
gain than single-endedconnections.Whenlevel
matchingis critical, pleasekeepthis specification
in mind.
Notes
All inputs andoutputs are labeled onthe back
panelMaintainthe correct left~right orientation.
Single-endedpreamplifier outputs canbe used
to simultaneouslyfeeddifferent systems.
