PRODUCT INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTION MANUAL
www.labsystems.com.au

The VP600S
represents the
culmination of years of expe-
rience with the prior Labsystems
VP models; with some features
borrowed, some improved, some
added, and some idea’s new
from the ground up. The end re-
sult is the finest sounding, most
powerful, and most musical
sounding bass amplifier we
have ever produced.
Please take the time to read
this manual thoroughly, which
will give you insight and under-
standing of the features and
operation of what can only
be described as a beautiful
bass amplifier.
The VP600S integrated bass
amplifier with valve preampli-
fier/mosfet power output has
been specifically developed for
the discerning bass player that
requires an extremely portable,
ultra high power package utilis-
ing valve pre-amplification with
none of the inherent reliability
problems and high running costs
generally associated with high
power full valve bass amplifica-
tion. LABSYSTEMS have achieved
this goal by combining a valve
preamplifier with our new high
power 600 watt mosfet power
amplifier module to produce a
compact package weighing in at
a mere 10.5 kilo’s that packs the
punch and tonality of a valve am-
plifier more than four times it’s
size and weight, and output
power that is not practically
achievable from a valve output
stage.
The VP600S also features our
new high current power sup-
ply module, and a specially de-
signed toroidal transformer,
which provides massive supply
rail reserves, capable of deliver-
ing incredible dynamic range and
transients well in excess of the
rated output. As with all LABSYS-
TEMS bass amplifiers, substantial
power is delivered even into a 8
ohm load, giving the user excep-
tional power, even when only a
single 8 ohm speaker cabinet is
used.
Two speed DC fan cooling is
also fitted, with the fan run-
ning at low speed when at lower
volume levels to minimise back-
ground noise should you be in a
recording or low noise level envi-
ronment. Upon production of
higher stage levels; the fan will
automatically switch to high
speed, rapidly cooling the output
stage, then return to low speed
automatically.
The VP600S features inbuilt eq.
pre tuning; making it possible
to achieve a great starting sound
very easily and quickly with the
front panel equalisation controls
set to approximately the 12
o’clock position, whilst further fine
tuning or radical changes in tone
are possible by further adjust-
ment of the eq. controls and tone
switches. Furthermore, with our
unique VP valve mid image cir-
cuitry it is possible to achieve a
harmonic warmth and almost
singing quality in your bass sound
that we believe is un available in
any other amplifier on the mar-
ket. This forward effect of the VP
mid image gives the user a sound
that has the ability to cut through
the masking effect of other loud
instruments around them in a live
situation; ensuring a bass sound
that is prominent and full bodied,
with incredible definition and
tone, whilst maintaining excep-
tional dynamic range.
Many of the other bass
amplifiers currently stating
that they have a “valve preamp”
are a large exaggeration on the
real truth, when in fact all they
have is a valve on the input stage
used as a pre buffer to buffer the
level off your guitar up to a suit-
able level to drive the real pre
amplification and equalisation
stage, which in 99 per cent of
these amplifiers quoting “valve
preamp” is generally fully solid
state. With the LABSYSTEMS
VP600S this is definitely not the
case. The equalisation control in
the VP600S is pure valve. Only
the highest quality high accuracy
silver mica, polyester and poly-
carbonate capacitors are used to
achieve a bass sound that is both
transparent and dynamically ex-
citing whilst retaining an un par-
alleled warmth, richness and
tonal quality. *the effects send
and d.i. outputs are buffered by
ic’s, to provide accurate reproduc-
tion of the preamplifier sound
without further un necessary col-
oration.
Every detail of the VP600S has
been meticulously executed,
with only the finest of compo-
nents and materials hand se-
lected. The VP600S is fully hand
built, hand soldered, and sub-
jected to extensive electronic, me-
chanical, and individual listening
tests, to produce an amplifier that
is true and musical, and capable
of withstanding years of rigor-
ous touring.
Labsystems VP600S General Description

This is used to compensate for the differing levels of output on both modern
and vintage guitars, and their varying styles of pickups and on board
electronics fitted. The trim level control should be adjusted so that the
saturation l.e.d. blinks occasionally when a note is struck firmly. It is per-
fectly ok to drive the trim level harder so the saturation l.e.d. comes on more
frequently if the want a slightly rough edge to your sound. Note the trim
level is not a volume control and must be driven to achieve correct gain
structure and tonality.
This indicates the correct drive level for the preamplifier and should be set
up as described in the trim level. It is perfectly normal to have the saturation
l.e.d. flashing occasionally.
Adjusts the amount of low frequency either cut or boosted. Increases the
amount of low frequency present, and also broadens the bandwidth giving
the bottom end a wider feel.
Adjusts the amount of lower midrange present.
Broadens the overall midrange by changing the bandwidth and band
shape. Gives the feeling of a much thicker mid spectrum. Also increases the
harmonic mid content.
Changes the centre frequency of the low mid control.
Works primarily in the upper mids and lower highs.
Works in the upper highs to create a real transparency in the overall sound.
In essence functions in a similar fashion to a presence control on a full valve
amp.
Boosts the top end for those who like it extremely bright.
Adjusts stage level only. Both D.I. output and effects send are un affected
by this control. The volume control should be turned down prior to switching
the unit either on ,off, or in or out of standby.
Mutes the outputs including the D.I. whilst leaving the heaters on in the
valves for instant start-up. Note: the red L.E.D. will illuminate when the
amplifier is in the standby mode. When the switch is in the out position the
amplifier is in standby, when pressed in the amplifier is in normal operation
mode.
Line level output to drive professional effects units. Standard mono 6.3MM
jack plugs are used. Some pedal type effects may be best used between
your guitar and the amplifier input, depending on the quality of the effect
unit.
The output of your effects unit plugs in here.
Used to drive front of house p.a. system or can be used as a line output at
mic level for recording consoles. The signal is post equalisation 600 ohm
balanced, pin one ground, pin two positive or hot, pin three negative or
cold.
Used to disconnect the earth from pin one on the xlr connector of the D.I.
output. Only use the ground lift if you are having humm problems when
connected to a mixing consule or PA system.

Turns on the power to the amplifier. Light will illuminate green in rear panel
switch and green l.e.d. on front panel will illuminate when power is on. It is
advisable to have the amp in standby mode and turn down the volume
control before turning the mains power either on or off.
Use only the supplied 240 volt AC lead to plug into this socket.
Damaged
power leads must not be used!
If in doubt contact your LABSYSTEMS
dealer. Power supply must be 240 volt ac 50Hz +/_ 5%
The mains fuse is located at the bottom of the I.E.C. power socket. Only
replace with M205 5 AMP SLO BLO fuse. A spare fuse can be stored in the
fuse drawer compartment. Ensure power is unplugged when checking or
changing the fuse.
Use of fuse with incorrect rating will void your warranty
Two Neutrik Combo connectors are provided. These connectors can be used
with either standard 6.3mm Jack plugs, or with male 3pin XLR connectors.
When using jack plugs, sleeve is ground and tip is positive. If using XLR
connectors, pin 1 is ground, and pin 3 positive. Ensure your speaker leads
and cabinets have the correct connections and that your leads are in good
condition.
Do not connect speakers less than 4 ohms total load. Don’t forget when
two 8 ohm speakers are connected the total load impedance is halved.
Ie: Connecting two 8 ohm cabinets results in a 4 ohm load.
If in doubt consult your labsystems dealer.
WARNING : THE OUTPUT POWER OF THE VP600S IS CONSERVATIVELY RATED
AT 600 WATTS MINIMUM. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE PEAK POWER
AVAILABLE MAY BE WELL IN EXCESS OF 600 WATTS AND CARE SHOULD BE
TAKEN TO USE SPEAKERS WITH ADEQUATE POWER HANDLING CAPABILITY.
LABSYSTEMS STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT THE VP600S IS USED WITH TWO
SUITABLY RATED SPEAKER CABINETS. ONLY USE HIGH QUALITY HEAVY DUTY
SPEAKER LEADS, AS THE OUTPUT CURRENT ON THE VP600S CAN EXCEED 17
AMPS PEAK. BECAUSE OF THE MASSIVE HIGH CURRENT CAPABILITY OF THIS
AMPLIFIER, WE ALSO RECOMMEND THAT WHEN USING TWO SPEAKER CABI-
NETS, THAT BOTH SPEAKER LEADS ORIGINATE FROM THE SPEAKER OUTPUTS
ON THE REAR OF THE AMPLIFIER, NOT BUMPED FROM CABINET TO CABINET.
LABSYSTEMS WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY FOR DAMAGE CAUSED
TO SPEAKERS NOT SUITABLY RATED!
CONTINUED OPERATION INTO A SHORT CIRCUITED SPEAKER OR SPEAKER LEAD
MAY DAMAGE THE AMPLIFIER . ENSURE YOUR LEADS ARE CORRECTLY WIRED
AND IN GOOD CONDITION.
ALWAYS ENSURE THE VENTS AND HEATSINK FINS ON THE BACK OF THE VP600S
ARE KEPT CLEAR. DO NOT COVER THE VENTS OR FAN INTAKE AS THIS WILL
CAUSE THE AMPLIFIER TO OVERHEAT AND SHUT DOWN. IT IS NORMAL FOR
THE REAR OF THE CHASSIS TO FEEL HOT TO TOUCH WHILST IN USE, ESPE-
CIALLY IF RUNNING AT HIGH AVERAGE LEVEL. IF THE VENTS BECOME BLOCKED
OR RESTRICTED WITH DUST AND FLUFF, PLEASE CLEAN THEM WITH A SOFT
BRUSH OR VACUUM TO AVOID OVERHEATING.
THE VP600S IS PROTECTED VIA TWO FORMS OF THERMAL CUTOUT IN THE
UNLIKELY EVENT THAT THE FAN OR VENTS BECOMES BLOCKED. IF THE THER-
MAL CUTOUT TRIPS, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY RESET WHEN THE UNIT HAS
COOLED SUFFICIENTLY, NO USER ACTION IS NECESSARY.
