III. Installation
Follow these instructions to prepare your console and install the gate bias option. You will need a #2
Phillips head screwdriver to perform this installation.
Insert the Line Fuse
The fuse drawer supplied with the Keithley 6487 holds the instrument line fuse and line voltage
selection module. The drawer holds one 5 mm × 20 mm (0.2 in × .79 in) time delay fuse.

WARNING: To avoid potentially lethal shocks, turn off the power to the system and disconnect it from
AC power before performing these procedures.
CAUTION: For continued protection against fire hazards, use only the same fuse type and rating
specified for the line voltage selected.
1. Turn off power to the system.
2. Determine the voltage for the single phase AC main power at the facility.
3. With a small flat-blade screwdriver positioned at the side of the fuse drawer, gently push in and
to the right to release the fuse drawer.
4. Remove the line voltage selector from the assembly and rotate it to the proper position. The
voltage should be seen in the window.
5. Select one of the provided fuses using Table 1.

Models 8404/8407 only: Prepare the Location for the Keithley 6487 Picoammeter
Voltage Source
The system will arrive with blank filler panels on the console, which you will need to remove to prepare
the location for the Keithley 6487. Use a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to remove the blank filler panels
and ensure there is support for the instrument.
Figure 2 shows the intended location for the gate bias option and the location of the blank filler panels
below it. Instructions are on the following page.
Figure 2: Models 8404/8407 instrument console
with the location of the gate bias option highlighted

Revision 1.1 P/N 119-845 4
Instructions:
1. If there is a blank filler panel in the position where the instrument will be installed, use a #2
Phillips head screwdriver to remove it (see Figure 2).
2. Use the support angle located at the bottom of the console (behind the blank filler panels) to
support the new instrument:
a. Remove the four screws that secure the unused support angle at the bottom of the
console; two screws are located at the front of the console, and two are located at the
rear.
NOTE: Only one support angle is required to support the instrument.
b. Attach the provided cage nuts appropriately at position #2 (see Figure 3) to fasten the
new support shelf.
c. Move the support angle to position #1 (see Figure 3).
d. Adjust the support angle height so that the top surface will contact the bottom of the
Keithley 6514.
e. Attach the screws.
f. Reattach the blank filler panels to the bottom of the console.

Model 8425 only: Prepare the Location for the Keithley 6487 Picoammeter Voltage
Source
The system will arrive with a blank filler panel on the console, which you will need to remove to prepare
the location for the Keithley 6487. Use a #2 Phillips head screwdriver to remove the blank filler panel
and ensure there is support for the instrument.
NOTE: Figure 4 shows the intended location for the gate bias option.

Mount the Instrument
The Keithley 6487 should be installed using one of the provided rack mount kits.
The half rack mount kit contains mounting ears, panel, handles (optional), and screws that adapt the
front panel to fit into an 88.9 mm (3.5 in) tall full rack space. Refer to Figure 4 for installation details.
The dual half rack mount kit contains inner and outer mounting ears, handles (optional), and screws that
adapt the front panel to fit into an 88.9 mm (3.5 in) tall full rack space beside an existing instrument.
Refer to Figure 5 for installation details.
NOTE: Ensure that there is a 25 mm (1 in) clearance on both sides of the instrument after
rack mounting.

Connect the Interlock Adapter Cable (Models 8404/8407 only, prior to 02//14/2014)
1. Lake Shore has discovered that some of the connection cables to the interlock connector on the
Keithley 6487 Picoammeter Voltage Source were made incorrectly. The pins outs were not in
the right location, but Lake Shore has solved this problem by making an adapter cable with the
correct pin outs.
2. If the gate bias or source voltage option does not work on your system, the problem is most
likely the Keithley interlock connection cable. Lake Shore has provided you with an adapter
cable that will solve this problem. Plug the male end of this cable into your existing female
adapter (see Figure 7), then plug the female end of the adapter into the interlock connection of
the Keithley 6487.
Figure 7: Female 4-pin interlock connector
3. The Interlock cable is labeled on the back of the Keithley 6487 and can be found in this location:
Figure 8: Back of Keithley 6487 showing the interlock cable location
4. This should correct the issue, but if it does not, please contact Lake Shore immediately to make
sure your problem gets corrected. Lake Shore contact information for technical assistance can
be found at the end of this document.

Make the Electrical Connections
The electrical connections for the Keithley 6487 consist of the IEEE-488 cables, banana jumpers, triaxial
cable, power cord, and possibly the interlock adapter cable.
1. Verify the instrument arrives with connections as shown in Figure 9.
2. After the instrument is installed in the system, connect one end of the provided IEEE-488 cable
to the corresponding port at the rear of the Keithley 6487.
3. Connect the other end of the IEEE-488 cable to any available IEEE-488 port on one of the other
instruments in the console.
4. Connect the triaxial cable (#8 for Models 8404/8407, and #7 for Model 8425), as shown in Figure
10. These cables will be bundled with the signal cables, connected to the back of the Model 776.
5. Connect the interlock cable as shown in Figure 10. The interlock adapter cable will connect in
line with this cable, if it is required for proper operation.
6. Select the provided power cord with the connector that matches the style of power distribution
strip in the console. Attach one end to the rear of the Keithley 6487, and the other end to the
power distribution strip.
7. Model 8425 only:
a. Confirm that triaxial cable #7 is connected to the triax feedthrough on the bottom of the
vacuum chamber.
b. Ensure that the triaxial sample holder is installed in the probe station, and is connected
to the signal cable (see Model 8425 user’s manual, section 4.4.4 for further
information).
8. Turn on the power to the system.
9. Turn on the power to the Keithley 6487.
10. If the gate bias options does not work, connect the interlock adapter cable as described above.
