Installation

Power
This set operates on an AC mains supply, the voltage is as
indicated on the label on the back cover. Never apply DC power to
the set. In the event of thunderstorms or powercuts, please pull
out the aerial and mains plugs.
Warning
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the set to rain or
moisture.
Service
Never remove the back cover of the set as this can expose you to
very high voltage and other hazards. If the set does not operate
properly, unplug it and call your dealer.
Wiring (in U.K. only)
This set is supplied with a BS 1363 approved 13 amp mains plug,
fused at 5 amp. When replacing the fuse always use a 5 amp BS
1362, BSI or ASTA approved type. Never use this plug with the
fuse cover omitted. To obtain a replacement fuse cover contact
your dealer or "LG Electronics U.K. Ltd.".
If the type of plug supplied is not suitable for the mains sockets in
your home, then the plug should be removed and a suitable type
fitted. Please refer to the wiring instructions below:
Warning (in U.K. only)
A mains plug removed from the mains lead of this set must be
destroyed. A mains plug with bared wires is hazardous if inserted
in a mains socket.
Do not connect either wire to the earth pin, marked with the letter
E or with the earth symbol or coloured green or green and
yellow.
If any other plug is fitted, use a 5 amp fuse, either in the plug, or at
the distribution board.
Important (in U.K. only)
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the
following codes: BLUE: NEUTRAL
BROWN: LIVE
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this set may not
correspond with the coloured marking identifying the terminals in
your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal
which is marked with the letter N or coloured black. The wire
which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which
is marked with the letter L or coloured red.
Aerial
Connect the aerial cable to the socket marked +75Ωon the back
cover. For the best reception an outdoor aerial should be used.
Location
Position your set so that no bright light or sunlight falls directly
onto the screen. Care should be taken not to expose the set to
any unnecessary vibration, moisture, dust or heat. Also ensure that
the set is placed in a position to allow a free flow of air. Do not
cover the ventilation openings on the back cover.

Location and function of controls
All the functions can be controlled with the remote control handset.
Some functions can also be adjusted with the buttons on the front
panel of the set.
Remote control handset
Before you use the remote control handset, please install the
batteries. See the next page.
1. r-I (POWER)
switches the set on from standby or off to standby.
2. EJECT
ejects the tape.
3. SYSTEM
selects the desired VCR colour system.
4. SLEEP
sets the sleep timer.
5. TV/AV
selects a TV or AV mode.
6. TIMER REC
lets you operate VCR buttons which do not function while the
timer programme is set for recording.
7. TIMER PROG
displays the timer programme recording menu.
8. D/E(PROGRAMME UP/DOWN)
switches the set on from standby.
selects a programme or a menu item.
F/G(VOLUME UP/DOWN)
adjusts the volume.
adjusts menu settings.

accepts your selection or displays the current mode.

recalls your preferred picture setting.

selects a recording tape speed SP or LP.

Battery installation
The remote control handset is powered by two AAA type batteries.
To load the batteries, turn the handset over and slide open the
battery compartment. Install two batteries as indicated by the
polarity symbols( and ) marked inside the compartment.
Note : To avoid damage from possible battery leakage, remove the
batteries if you do not plan to use the remote control handset for an
extended period of time.

Basic operation
On and off
1. Press the main power button on the front of the set to switch the
set on.
2. If the set is in standby mode, press the r-I (POWER), D/E,
TV/AV or NUMBER buttons to switch it on fully.
3. Press the r-I (POWER) button. The set reverts to standby
mode.
4. Press the main power button again to switch the set off.
Note : If, while the set is switched on, the mains plug is dis-
connected the set will switch to standby when the mains plug is
replaced in the mains power socket.
Programme selection
You can select a programme number with the D/Eor NUMBER
buttons.
Volume adjustment
Press the F/Gbutton to adjust the volume.
Mute function
Press the MUTE button. The sound is switched off and the display
WWappears. You can cancel it by pressing the MUTE,F/G, SSM
or I/II button.
Quick view
Press the Q.VIEW button to view the last programme you were
watching.
Option :
On some models (two tuner TVCR), press and hold the Q.VIEW
button to view the recording programme. Release this button to
return to the previously viewed programme.
On screen language selection
This is an optional function. In the models which have on screen
language function, the menu can be displayed on the screen in the
desired language. First select your language.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 1.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Language.
3. Press the OK button.
4. Press the D/Ebutton to select the desired language.
All the on screen displays will appear in the selected language.
5. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.

The dialogue between you and your set takes place on screen with
an operator menu. The buttons required for the operating steps are
also displayed.
Menu selection
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to display each menu.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select a menu item.
The selected menu item changes from green to purple.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to set a menu item or OK button to
display the sub menu.
Note :
a. The menus automatically disappear in about 10 seconds if you
do not press a button. However if you press the MENU button again,
the last selected menu will appear.
b. In the AV, playback or recording mode, MENU 1 is not displayed.
c. In the teletext mode, menus are not displayed.

Setting up TV stations
Up to 100 TV stations can be stored in this set by programme
numbers (00 to 99). Once you have preset the stations, you will be
able to use the D/Eor NUMBER buttons to scan the stations you
programmed.
Stations can be tuned using an automatic or a manual mode.
Auto programme tuning
All stations that can be received are stored by this method. It is
recommended that you use auto programme during installation of
this set.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 1.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Auto programme.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to select the beginning system I, DK or
BG.
I:PAL I/II (U.K./ Ireland)
DK :PAL D/K, SECAM D/K (East Europe)
BG :PAL B/G, SECAM B/G (option) (Europe/East Europe etc.)
Option :
On some models, the display L or BG in Auto programme
mode appears on the screen.
L: SECAM L/L’ (France)
BG :PAL B/G, SECAM B/G (Europe/East Europe etc.)
4. Press the D/Ebutton to select start.
5. Press the OK button to begin auto programming.
When auto programming is completed, the station stored into
programme number 1 will appear on the screen.
To stop auto programming, press the OK button. The active
programme at that time will be displayed.
Note :
a. On some models, the station name may be stored for stations
which broadcast VPS (Video Programme Service), PDC
(Programme Delivery Control) or TELETEXT data. If no station
name can be assigned to a station, the channel number is
assigned and stored.
b. Some undesired stations may be stored, such as noisy or
unclear signals from distant transmitters. You can easily skip
these stations by entering

Setting up TV stations
Manual programme tuning
Manual programme lets you manually tune and arrange the
stations in whatever order you desire.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 1.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Manual programme.
3. Press the OK button to display the Manual programme
mode.
4. Press the D/Ebutton to select Programme. Select the
desired programme number with the F/Gbutton or NUMBER
buttons. Any number under 10 is entered with a numeric '0' in
front of it, i.e. '05' for 5.
5. Press the D/Ebutton to select System. Press the F/G
button to select I, DK or BG as required.
Option :
On some models, the display System (L or BG)appears. In
that case, press the

6. Press the D/Ebutton to select Search. Press the F/G
button to commence searching. If a station is found the search
will stop.
7. If this station is the one required press the OK button, if not
press the F/Gbutton again.
8. Press the OK button. The display Stored will appear.
9. To store another station repeat steps 4 to 8.
10. Repeatedly press the MENU button to return to normal TV
viewing.
Fine tuning
Normally fine tuning is only necessary if reception is poor.
1. Repeat steps 1 to 3 above.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Fine.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to fine tune for the best picture and
sound.
4. Press the OK button. The display Stored will appear.
5. Repeatedly press the MENU button to return to normal TV
viewing.
The finely tuned programme will be indicated by a yellow
number during programme selection.

Setting up TV stations
Programme edit
This function enables you to rearrange the programmes stored by
auto programming in whatever order you desire. Also you can skip
particular programme numbers stored by auto programming.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 1.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Programme edit.
3. Press the OK button, and the Programme edit mode will
appear.
Exchanging programmes
1. Press the F/Gbutton to change the left hand programme
number. The viewing station corresponding to the new
programme number is shown on the screen.
2. Press the NUMBER buttons to select the desired right hand
programme number. Any number under 10 is entered with a
numeric '0' in front of it, i.e. '05' for 5.
3. Press the OK button. The station stored in the right hand
programme number will now appear as the left hand
programme number.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 to exchange other programmes.
Repeatedly press the MENU button to return to normal TV
viewing.
Assigning a station name
1. Select the programme to which you want to assign a station
name with the F/Gbutton.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Name.
3. Select a character position with the F/Gbutton.
4. To select your desired first character, press the Dbutton
several times or continuously. The will blink, followed by the
alphabet Ato Z, ato z, the numeric 0to 9, _, +, .in turn. With
the Ebutton you can select in the opposite direction.
5. Select the next position by pressing the Gbutton and then take
your choice of the second character, and so on.
6. Press the OK button.
7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 to assign another station name.
Repeatedly press the MENU button to return to normal TV
viewing.

Setting up TV stations
Skipping a stored programme
1. Press the F/Gbutton to select the programme you want to
skip.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select PR Skip.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to select On or Off.
If you select On, the selected station is skipped.
4. Press the OK button.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to skip another programme.
Repeatedly press the MENU button to return to normal TV
viewing.
The selection of the skipped programme numbers with the
NUMBER buttons is still possible and they will be indicated by blue
numbers during programme selection.
Note : You cannot skip the programme number 1.
Auto AV setting
If you want to watch programmes from the other equipments such
as VCRs, camcorders, etc. on the channel you are viewing now,
switch Auto AV to On.
The set is automatically switched to AV 1 mode when an AV signal
is input. But if you want to keep on watching TV mode, set Auto
AV to Off.
1. Press the F/Gbuttons to select your desired programme
number.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Auto AV.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to select On or Off.
4. Press the OK button.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 to set another programme.
Repeatedly press the MENU button to return to normal TV
viewing.

Picture adjustment
You can adjust picture contrast, brightness, colour intensity,
sharpness and tint (NTSC AV only) to the levels you prefer.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 2.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select the desired picture item.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to make appropriate adjustments.
4. Press the OK button to store it for the picture User.
To recall your preferred setting, press the PSM button until the
desired picture (Dynamic, Mild, Game, Standard or User)
appears. The picture Dynamic, Mild, Game and Standard are
programmed for good picture reproduction at the factory and
cannot be changed.

Sound adjustment
Sound adjustment
You can adjust the sound bass, treble, balance, surround and
headphone volume/sound (option) to the levels you prefer.
The surround sound creates an all around sound as in a concert
hall.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 3.
2. Press the DD/ EEbutton to select the desired sound item.
3. Press the FF/ GGbutton to make desired adjustment.
4. Press the OK button to store it for the sound User.
To recall your preferred setting, press the SSM button until the
desired sound (Music, Speech, Standard or User) appears.
The sound Music, Speech and Standard are programmed for
good sound reproduction at the factory and cannot be changed.
Stereo/Dual reception
When a programme is selected, the sound information for the
station appears after the programme number and station name
disappear.
Mono sound selection
In stereo reception if the stereo signal is weak, you can switch to
mono by pressing the I/II button twice. In mono reception the
depth of sound is improved. To switch back to stereo, press the I/II
button twice again.
Language selection for dual language broadcast
If a programme received in two languages (dual language), you
can switch to DUAL I, DUAL II or DUAL I II by pressing the I/II
button repeatedly.
DUAL I sends the primary broadcast language to the
loudspeakers.
DUAL II sends the secondary broadcast language to the
loudspeakers.
DUAL I II sends a separate language to each loudspeaker.

Sound adjustment
NICAM reception
If your set is equipped with the receiver for NICAM reception, the
high quality NICAM (Near Instantaneous Companding Audio
Multiplex) digital sound can be received.
Sound output can be selected according to the type of received
broadcast as follows by pressing the I/II button repeatedly.
1. When NICAM mono is received, you can select NICAM
MONO or FM MONO.
2. When NICAM stereo is received, you can select NICAM
STEREO or FM MONO.
3. When NICAM dual is received, you can select NICAM DUAL I,
NICAM DUAL II or NICAM DUAL I II or MONO. When FM
mono is selected the display MONO appears on the screen.
Note : If the NICAM signal is weak, switch to mono.
Sound output selection
In AV mode, you can select output sound for the left and right
loudspeakers.
Repeatedly press the I/II button to select the sound output.
L+R : Audio signal from audio L input is sent to left loud-
speaker and audio signal from audio R input is sent to
right loud-speaker.
L+L : Audio signal from audio L input is sent to left and right
loud-speakers.
R+R : Audio signal from audio R input is sent to left and right
loud-speakers.
VCR Hi-Fi sound system
The received Mono, Stereo or Dual sound signal is recorded as
below regardless of your selection of speaker or sound.
If you press I/II button while playing the tape recorded as Hi-Fi,
sound can be selected as below.
Hi-Fi L+L R+R MONO
Note : If you hear any noise while playing a Hi-Fi tape, select
mono sound.

Inputs can be set for TV or AV mode. AV mode is used when an
external VCR or other equipment is connected to the set.
Note : When an external equipment is connected via the aerial
socket the set is used in TV mode. See the 'Connection of external
equipment' section.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 4.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Input.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to select TV,AV 1 or AV 2.
The two AV modes are :
AV 1: VCR connected to the Euro scart socket on the back
AV 2: VCR connected to the AV 2 sockets on the side panel
4. Press the OK button.
To return to TV mode from AV mode, press the D/Eor NUMBER
buttons.
Alternatively you can select the TV or AV mode by pressing the
TV/AV button.
Child lock
The TV can be set so that the remote control handset is needed to
control it. This feature can be used to prevent unauthorized viewing.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 4.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Child lock.
3. Press the F/Gbutton on the remote control handset to select
On.
4. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.
With the lock on, the display Child lock on appears on the screen
if any button on the front panel is pressed while viewing the TV.
Note : The display
Child lock on
will not appears on the screen
if any button on the front panel is pressed while displaying the
menus.
Auto sleep
If you select Auto sleep On the set automatically switches itself
to standby mode approximately 10 minutes after a TV station stops
broadcasting.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 4.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Auto sleep.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to select On.
4. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.
Auto repeat
To play back the tape repeatedly, select Auto repeat On.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 4.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Auto repeat.
3. Press the F/Gbutton to select On.
4. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.

Other functions
AVL (Auto volume leveler)
If you select AVL On, the set automatically keeps on an equal
volume level even if you change programmes.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 4.
2. Press the D/E
button to select AVL.
3. Press the F/G
button to select On.
4. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.
VCR colour system setting
You can adjust the VCR colour system. Under normal circumstances,
select AUTO. If necessary (if input signal is weak), change the
colour system by using the instructions below.
1. Press the SYSTEM button. The VCR System mode will appear.
2. Repeatedly press the SYSTEM button to select the correct system.
Option:
On some models, MESECAM/SECAM is an optional function.
Only a set with MESECAM/SECAM can perform this function.
Note :
a.
NTSC PB
is for playback only. You cannot record NTSC signals.
b. If the picture was no colour during playing back a MESECAM
video cassette tape in
AUTO
, select

.
Sleep timer
You don't have to switch the set off before you go to sleep. The
sleep timer automatically switches the set to standby after the
preset time elapses.
To select the number of minutes, repeatedly press the SLEEP
button. r--- will appear on the screen, followed by 10, 20, 30, 60,
90, 120, 180 and 240.
The timer begins to count down from the number of minutes selected.
Note :
a. To view the remaining sleep time, press the SLEEP button once.
b. To cancel the sleep time, repeatedly press the SLEEP button
until the display r
---
appears.
c. When you switch the set off, the set releases the preset sleep time.

Time setting
Clock
The clock uses the 24 hour system and must be set to the correct
time before operating the set.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 5.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Clock.
3. Select and adjust hour and minute by pressing the F/Gand D/E
button.
4. Select and adjust the day, the month and the year by pressing
the F/Gand D/Ebutton. The day of the week is automatical-
ly displayed.
5. Press the OK button to start.
6. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.
Note :
a. The clock operates for at least 10 minutes, if the power is
switched off or there is a power interruption (disconnection or
power failure).
b. If you have already set the timer programme, you cannot reset
the clock. To reset the clock, first cancel timer programme
settings.
On/off time
By using this function, the set automatically switches on or off at a
preset time. You must set the time correctly before using on/off
time function.
1. Repeatedly press the MENU button to select MENU 5.
2. Press the D/Ebutton to select Off time or On time.
3. Select and adjust hour and minute by pressing the F/Gand D/E
button.
4. Select and adjust Run or Hold by pressing the F/Gand D/E
button.
5. Select and adjust the programme number by pressing the F/G
and D/Ebutton.
6. Press the OK button to start.
7. Press the OK button to return to normal TV viewing.
For off time, please note the absence of programme number.
Note :
a. In the event of power interruption (disconnection or power
failure), the clock must be reset.
b. If the same time is set for the on time and the off time, only the
off time operates.
c. This set must be put into standby mode with the r-
I
(POWER)
button to operate the on time function.
d. If the on time function activates, the set will automatically switch
to the on time programme number, even during viewing.
e. Two hours after the set is switched on by the on time function it
will automatically switch back to standby mode unless a button
has been pressed.
f. Once the on or off time is set, these functions operate daily at
the preset time.

Playing tapes
To play back a VHS video cassette tape which has no safety tab in
position (this means you cannot record on to it), insert it into the
set in the standby mode.
The set will at once switch itself on and perform the following
sequence by itself:
PLAY STOP REWIND EJECT
To play back a VHS video cassette tape which has its safety tab in
position (this means that you have recorded on it and left the tab
untouched), insert it into the set in the standby mode.
Now you must press the PLAY(X2) button.
To stop playback, press the STOP button.
To take out the tape, press the EJECT button.
If you want to play the tape at double speed, press the PLAY(X2)
button during normal playback. The display will appear
and the tape will be played back at double speed.
Note :
a. During
Timer programme
set, if you try to insert a video
cassette tape without a safety tab in standby mode, the tape
will automatically be ejected.
b. If you have already set
Auto repeat
to
On
in MENU 5, the
tape will play back repeatedly.
Tape tracking control
Tracking ensures that the tape is correctly aligned with the
playback head. It works only during playback and its principal
purpose is to minimize picture/Hi-Fi sound shake and noise (fuzzy
lines across the picture). It is adjusted automatically or manually.
Auto tracking
Whenever playback starts, auto tracking automatically adjusts the
picture/Hi-Fi sound. The display will appear while the best
picture is selected.
To reactivate auto tracking, press the AUTO button on the remote
control handset.
Manual tracking
You can manually adjust the picture/Hi-Fi sound by pressing the +/-
buttons.
Note : Tracking also operates during slow or still mode.
Pause/still picture
To still picture, press the P/STILL button. A still picture and the
display will appear on the screen.
If a still picture lasts for more than five minutes, the set will switch
to the stop mode to protect the tape and the video heads.
To restart play back, press the PLAY(X2) button.
To temporarily stop recording, press the P/STILL button. The
display will appear. Press this button again to continue
recording.
Note : The screen display might be unstable when you press the
P/STILL button to play the tape as recorded LP.

VCR operation
Slow picture
To see exactly at slow speed, press the SLOW button. If you press
the SLOW button repeatedly during playback, the playback speed
will be faster and faster.
Note : The screen display might be unstable while you press the
SLOW button when playing a tape recorded in LP.
Fast forward, cue, rewind and review
Forward search
Press the FF button during playback.
The display owill appear and the tape plays faster than
normal speed. Press the PLAY(X2) button to return to normal
speed.
Pressing the FF button in the stop mode winds the tape forward at
high speed. Then the display GG
will appear on the screen.
If you press and hold the FF button in this mode, the searching
picture will appear. This enables you to see what is on the tape. To
return to the FF mode, release the FF button.
If the tape winds forward to the end, it will automatically stop,
rewind to the beginning and then eject the tape.
Note : On some models, pressing and holding the FF button will
cause the set to search the tape forward fast while displaying the
picture.Release the FF button to return to normal speed.
Reverse search
Press the REW button during playback.
The display nwill appear and the tape will play in reverse
faster than normal speed. Press the PLAY(X2) button to return to
normal playback.
Pressing the REW button in the stop mode rewinds the tape
backward at high speed. Then the display FF
will appear on
the screen.
If you press and hold the REW button in this mode, the searching
picture will appear. This enables you to see what is on the tape. To
return to the REW mode, release the REW button.
Note :
a. On some models, pressing and holding the REW button will
cause the set to search the tape backward fast while displaying
the picture. Release the REW button to return to normal
playback.
b. Sound is automatically muted during these operations.
c. The models which have the ‘High-speed rewinding’ function
might have some frictional sound of tape on functioning FF or
REW.
