1 Preparing the Telephone for Use
Your telephone is ready to use after just a few simple operations.
However, we would still like to give you a few general hints.
→Both the base station/charging unit and the handset are ready
for use after the batteries have been installed and charged.
The handset of the alphaTel 5000 DE has already been regis-
tered on the base station. With the basic settings, you can
start using it immediately on the exchange line. First you have
to log on the alphaTel 5000 DL to the base station of the al-
phaTel 5000 DE (or another DECT unit) (see section
5.9"
Logging Handset On/Off
").
→Neither the handset nor the base station will function when a
power failure occurs or the AC adapter is not connected. A
power failure does not affect the settings, phone book entries,
caller ID list and redial memory.
→Use only the included AC adapter.
→The base station and the handset should not be used in the
immediate vicinity of electrical equipment (e.g., medical
equipment, satellite receivers, telephones, televisions and en-
ergy-saver lamps) or metallic objects.
→Never use the telephone in potentially explosive areas (e.g.,
paint shops).
→Never expose your telephone to direct sunlight or other
sources of heat. It is designed for normal room conditions.
→People with hearing aids should remember that the radio
signals between base station and handset can cause a very
unpleasant buzzing noise in their hearing aids.
→Use only the included batteries. Do not use non-
chargeable batteries (danger of explosion!).
→Make sure that the charging contacts do not come into contact
with metallic or greasy objects.
→The time and date must be set if they are to be shown in the
display and saved together with the calls in the caller ID list
(section 6.5"
Setting the date and Time
").

1.1 Base Station
Set up the base station at a central site in the area in which you
want to use the telephone (e.g., in the hall of your apartment).
You will need a 230 V mains socket at this site.
If you also want to use the telephone outside your building (e.g., in
your yard), set up the base station in a room which points toward
the yard and is at window height.
Place the base station on a flat surface.
Due to the wide variety of paint and polishes used on furniture, we
cannot guarantee that the feet of the unit will not leave marks on
the surface on which it is placed.
The base station can be installed with or without feet. If the base
station is positioned at a slant with the included stand, make sure
that this does not scratch delicate surfaces.
Depending on the ambient conditions, the outdoor range is ap-
proximately 300 m. The indoor range between base station and
handset is approximately 50 m, depending on the construction of
the building.
Note: Building construction (e.g., use of steel) may further limit
the range.
Insert the connectors in the order shown below.
1. Insert western connectors of line cord and AC adapter into the
appropriate sockets on the bottom of the base station.
2. Insert connector of the line cord into wall socket.
3. Connect AC adapter to a mains socket.
1. Insert jack plug of the AC adapter into the socket on the bot-
tom of the charging unit.
2. Connect AC adapter to a mains socket.

1.2 Handset
Note: Put the base station/charging unit into operation first
before the handset so that the batteries of the handset can be
charged immediately and the handset of the alphaTel 5000 DE is
able to locate "its" base immediately.
The handset of the alphaTel 5000 DL must be logged on to the base
station of the alphaTel 5000 DE (or another DECT unit) (see sec-
tion5.9"
Logging Handset On/Off
").
Installation: Battery
The handset is powered by two chargeable batteries.
1. Hold handset with keys pointing down.
2. Open battery compartment and insert included batteries. Make
sure poles are correct!
3. To close, slide the cover onto the battery compartment until it
closes tight .
Charging the batteries
The included batteries are not charged.
To charge, place the handset on the base station / into the charging
unit.
You will hear a signal tone and see the charging LED of the base
station go on to confirm that the batteries are being charged.
At certain times, the LED goes off briefly. The charging state is
checked during this time.
The batteries are fully charged when the LED begins to flash (main-
tenance charge).
The symbol in the upper right corner of the display indicates the
charging status of the batteries (corresponds to the number of
segments addressed). In addition the message “LOW BATT” ap-
pears when the batteries are empty.
Fully charged batteries allow you to telephone for up to 7 hours.
The standby time of a fully charged battery is up to 100 hours.

Notes:
→Fully charge the batteries before making your first telephone
call. This takes about 6 or 7 hours.
→The capacity of the batteries is unknown when you insert
them. A correct display is only achieved after a complete
charging cycle.
→New batteries usually reach their full capacity after a few
charging and discharging cycles.
→Shorter operating times may occur depending on the battery
state. Replacement of the original NiMH batteries by other
NiMH or NiCd batteries of the AAA/Micro type gives other
talking and standby times depending on their capacity.
→Shorter operating times than those specified may result due to
the use of the integrated LCD illumination and the infrared
function.
Turning handset on/off
After the batteries have been installed, the handset is on.
To turn off the handset, press
longer than 2 seconds. To turn it
on again, press
again. The handset also turns on automatically
when replaced on the base station/charging unit and the following
message appears for 5 minutes.
Note: A handset which is turned off does not ring. However, the
base station still continues to ring. To accept a call with the hand-
set, turn the handset on first. Remember that it may take some time
before the handset is connected to the base station.

2 During a Call
The symbol aon the display indicates whether the telephone is
located in the radio range of a base station. Indication of all three
segments means optimum transmission is guaranteed.
2.1 Incoming Calls
When you are called, the base station and all handsets which are
switched on ring. The on-line state LED on the base station begins
to flash.
The display of the handset indicates:
→the telephone number of the caller (if the telephone number is
transmitted) or
→The name of the caller (if tel. number is transmitted and the
caller is entered in the phone book)
Note:In Switzerland the phone number of caller is only transmitted
on an ISDN PABX.
If a VIP calls, *** VIP Call *** appears in the display
(on condition that the corresponding caller ID is in the
phone book, see section 3.2"
Creating a New Entry
").
In addition, the ringer volume and melody of the handset can be set
separately for VIPs. (Section 5.4"
Setting the Volume and Melody of
the Ringer
").
If you do not want to answer the call, you can switch off the
ringing of the handset for this call by pressing the left function key
RINGER OFF.
The caller still hears the “ringing“ and if you wish, you can still
answer the call by pressing
.
If you want to mute the TV or audio, to be able to telephone
undisturbed, press the function key IR-MUTE (providing the
function is activated, see section 5.11"
Activating/ Deactivating the
Infrared Remote Control
").
Please note, however, that the right function key is occupied by the
CALL HOLD function 20 seconds after “unhooking” and then
muting is only possible under the menu.
The muting of the TV and / or audio system can be deactivated
immediately after “hanging up” by pressing the right function key

(IR-MUTE). Other functions can be performed on the TV/audio
system with the alphaTel 5000 handset (see section 2.7 "

").
If the refer-back function is required more often after answering a
call, you can switch off the infrared function (see section 5.11), in
this case the Refer-back function key is available immediately after
answering a call. If you need both functions, we recommend you to
make an entry in the network functions phone book. This is then
available immediately after seizing the line when you open the
phone book.
In the ex-factory state the handset is set so that it answers the
incoming call immediately it is lifted from the base station / charg-
ing unit. If the handset is not on the base, you have to press a key
to answer the call.
To end the call, press
or place the handset back on the base
station / charging unit.

2.2 Caller ID List
The caller ID list contains the last 30 incoming calls (regardless of
whether or not they have been answered) with phone number,
name, date and time if the phone numbers are transmitted with the
call (an entry in the phone book is a prerequisite for storing the
name). Answered calls are entered as old entries, unanswered calls
as new entries.
H
appears in the display for new entries.
As long as the storage capacity of 30 calls has not been exhausted,
calls are also listed without phone numbers (you can then see how
often you have been called).
Note:The phone number is only displayed if the network provider
supports this function and the caller and called party have the
release for this feature. If you operate your telephone on a PABX,
this must also support the CLIP (CLIP is the abbreviation for “Call-
ing Line Identification Presentation“) function!
The callers are listed is chronological order in the caller ID list. If
one caller has called several times, only the last call is listed with
the time. The number of attempted calls (max. 9) is shown addi-
tionally.
To call the caller ID list, press the function key
H
. If only old calls
are stored, you go to the caller ID list by pressing the function key
MENU and selecting the menu item Caller list.
