Overview$
LHC!consists!of!an!HD!video!recorder!that!is!controlled!by!a!scientific-quality!audio!recorder!(LS1)!that!
also!triggers!video!recordings.!!Audio!is!collected!by!a!hydrophone!that!is!external!to!the!recorder.!
LHC!is!housed!in!a!PVC!tube!and!is!depth!rated!to!500!m.!
Each!board!has!its!own!microSD!flash!card.!!Typically,!the!larger!card!(e.g.!128!GB)!is!used!with!the!video!
camera!and!the!smaller!card!(e.g.!64!GB)!is!used!with!the!LS1!audio!board.!
The!audio!board!records!at!44.1!kHz.!The!video!camera!does!not!record!audio.!

LS1!Audio!interface!board.!The!memory!card!should!be!placed!in!slot!1.!

Camera!with!green!power!LED!illuminated.!

Hydrophone$
The!hydrophone!is!an!HTI-96-min.!You!will!receive!a!separate!calibration!sheet!for!the!hydrophone.!
The!default!system!gain!is!full!scale!=!0.79!Vpeak!(i.e.!+2!dB!gain).!
For!example,!hydrophone!with!sensitivity!of!-170!dBV/uPa!will!have!a!clip!level!of!168!dB.!
Batteries!
LHC!uses!D-cell!batteries,!which!power!both!the!audio!recorder!and!camera.!
The!expected!deployment!duration!will!be!calculated!and!shown!on!the!display!assuming!that!12!D-cell!
batteries!have!been!installed.!

Settings!are!programmed!on!the!audio!board!through!three!buttons!on!the!front.!
Press!ENTER!(bottom!button)!to!scroll!through!menu!choices.!The!Up!and!Down!buttons!can!be!used!to!
change!the!setting.!

Recording$Schedule$
Normal!Mode:!
The!camera!will!record!on!a!duty!cycle!continuously.!!For!example,!with!Rec=60!s!and!Slp=240s,!
the!camera!will!record!for!60!seconds!(1!minute)!and!sleep!for!240!seconds!(4!minutes),!
yielding!a!duty!cycle!of!1!minute!of!recording!for!every!5!minutes.!

Diel!Mode:!
Diel!mode!is!the!same!as!normal!mode!with!respect!to!the!duty!cycling!of!recording,!but!
recordings!are!only!made!between!the!Start!time!and!End!time.!
For!example,!to!record!at!dusk!
from!1600-1800!hours!on!a!5!
minute!duty!cycle,!the!settings!
would!be:!

Setting$Time$on$Video$Camera$
The!date!and!time!can!be!set!on!the!video!camera!by!creating!a!file!called!time.txt!and!placing!it!
on!the!microSD!card!that!is!put!in!the!camera.!!If!this!file!is!present,!the!timestamp!on!the!
camera!will!be!updated!when!the!camera!is!powered!on.!

After!the!card!is!in!the!camera,!switch!on!power!to!the!LHC,!and!manually!start!the!camera!at!
the!time!corresponding!to!the!time!in!the!time.txt!file.!!For!example,!for!the!file!above,!the!
camera!would!be!turned!on!at!1300!hours!on!20!January!2016.!
Preparing$to$Record$
1. Insert!12!D-cell!batteries.!
2. The!video!camera!should!have!no!LEDs!illuminated!(it!should!be!off).!!The!blank!microSD!
card!should!be!inserted.!
If$the$record$duration$is$longer$than$5$
minutes$(300$s),$the$video$camera$will$split$
the$recording$into$multiple$contiguous$5$
minute$long$video$files.$$The$audio$files$will$
be$the$length$specified$by$Rec.$
!

3. To!start,!switch!the!LS1!board!power!switch!to!ON.!!This!turns!on!power!to!the!audio!
board,!which!then!controls!when!the!video!board!records.!The!camera!should!turn!on!
(green!LED!illuminated)!after!the!LS1!initializes!the!microSD!card(s).!
4. Change!the!settings!to!the!desired!recording!schedule!using!the!push!buttons.!!
5. Start!recording!by!pressing!UP!and!DOWN!buttons!simultaneously.!
6. Wait!to!make!sure!the!first!recording!starts!properly.!The!display!will!go!off!on!the!LS1!
board,!and!a!red!LED!on!the!camera!will!flash.!
7. Make!sure!o-rings!are!lubricated!with!silicone.!!Insert!into!tube!and!rotate!to!screw!on!
the!lid.!!The!lid!should!be!tightened!hand!tight.!DO!NOT!USE!A!STRAP!WRENCH!TO!
CLOSE!THE!HOUSING.!
LEDS$
What!to!expect:!
After!switching!the!power!switch,!the!orange!LED!on!the!audio!board!will!illuminate.!!If!the!first!
recording!is!more!than!one!minute!in!the!future,!the!board!will!go!to!sleep.!
The!camera!will!power!on!about!10!s!before!the!first!recording.!
Once!the!camera!recording!is!triggered,!the!red!LED!will!flash!slowly!during!recording.!
When!the!camera!is!commanded!to!power!down,!the!red!LED!will!flash!quickly,!and!then!all!
camera!LEDs!will!turn!off.!
Mounting$Bracket$
LHC!comes!with!a!u-bolt!mounting!bracket!that!can!be!fit!around!the!tube.!!The!mount!includes!
a!quick!release!mount!for!a!tripod.!

Video$
Remove!the!microSD!card!from!the!camera!board.!!Push!the!card!in!to!eject!it.!!Insert!the!card!
into!a!computer!and!view!the!files!directly!on!the!PC.!!Note!that!Macintosh!computers!may!
leave!extra!files!on!the!card,!which!may!interfere!with!proper!startup.!!After!downloading!the!
files.!Delete!the!files!before!starting!the!next!recording!session.!
Audio$
Remove!the!microSD!card!by!pulling!it!out!(there!is!no!spring!eject!on!the!audio!board).!!Audio!
files!are!stored!as!standard!.wav!files.!
The!start!date!and!time!of!the!file!is!stored!in!the!filename.!

Manual$Camera$Override$
The!camera!can!be!turned!off!by!holding!down!the!button!on!the!camera!board!for!5!seconds.!
Housing$Lens$
The!housing!lens!is!made!of!acrylic.!!If!it!becomes!scratched,!you!can!polish!it!with!an!acrylic!
polishing!kit.!!If!you!are!in!the!field!without!a!kit,!toothpaste!may!work.!
