You
canprogram theX-30tosound alarms whentheboatgoes
shallowerordeeperthana
presetdepth.Analarmwillalsosoundwhena
fish entersanalarm zone. Zoominandseparatefishfromstructureand
each other.

INSTALLATION
Mounting
Install theX-30 In any convenient location,provided there is
clearancewhen
tiltedforthebest
viewingangle. HolesInthebracketbase
allowwood screw or through bolt mounting. Attach the bracket to
aluminumpanels
withsheetmetalscrews. Placea
piece
of
plywood
onthe
backofthinfiberglass panelstosecurethe
mountinghardware. Make
certain thereisenough
room behind theunittoattachthepowerand
transducer cables.
Youcanroutethe
power
andtransducercablesthrough the
7/8"
holeinthebaseofthe
gimbal bracket. Thenpassthem
through
a
holein
themounting surface. Thesmallest holethatwill passoneconnector
through
is
3/4". Passthetransducer connector
andcable
upthrough
the
holeand
gimbal
bracket.Thenpushthepower
cablewiredown
through
thebracket and dash. After
routing
thecables, filltheholewithsilicone
rubberadhesive (RTV). Offsetthebrackettocoverthe
majority
ofthehole.

negativeorground. AttachtheIn-linefuseholdertotheredwireonthe
power
cablewiththe
crimpconnector. Theotherendof thefuseholder
attachestothe
battery
or
accessory
buss. Ifthecableisnot
long
enough,
splice
ordinary
#18gauge
wireontoit. Becertainthatthefuse
holderis
as
closetothe
power
source
(battery
or
accessorybuss)
as
possible. This
protectsthe
power
cableand yourX-30 intheeventofashort. Use
a3-amp
fuse.
TheX-30hasreverse
polarity
protection. No damagewilloccurif
the
wiresarereversed. (However,theunitwillnotworkuntilthe
wiresare
attached
correctly.)
In
black, strongertargets
aregray. It
alsogivesduestothe
compostition
of
thebottom. Inother
words,
youcan
tellifthebottomIssoftorhard. A
hardbottom
returnsastrongsignalcausing
awide
grayline.Asoft,muddy
orweedybottomreturns aweaker signal whichIs emphasized with a

Ifinterference
begins
at
slowboat
speeds,worsening
astheboat
speed increases,
thenaprobable cause
isacoustic
noise, orcavitation.
This noise isnotelectrical, but rathermechanically induced noise
from
thetransducer. Stop
the
boat, put
the
engineinneutral,andincreasethe
rpm. ifthenoise doesnotincrease onthe

Usually,
airbubbles
passingovertheface
ofthetransducercreateacoustic
noise.Thefastera
boattravels, themoreairbubblesincreaseandgenerate

INTERPRETATION
Now let's look at the dis-

now scrolling the return echoes
acrossthescreenandthedigital is
searching forthebottomdepth. It
flashesWOK until Itfindsthebottom.
Once

HeretheX-30hasfoundthe
bottomat
50feet. The

to80feet. It
automaticallychooses
alowerlimitthatplaces thebottom
signal nearthe bottomofthe dis-

Thebar

isthe
sensitivitybar. Itshowsthe
levelofchart
sensitivityinuse. Thebarextendsfromlefttoright. Avery
shortbarindicatesrninimumsensitivity. Settingthesensitivityto maximum
causes

ThewordAUTO indicates the
X-30Is intheautomatic mode.
The

lineofthe
displayisalwaysadashed line. Itmovesfrom

The

Scalemarkers
printed
onboth
sidesof

Themostefficient
wayto
become
acquaintedwitha

ofwater
Istosurveyitwith

X-30. Startwitha
mapofthe lake,If

in relationtolandmarksonshore.

yougo

yoursurvey,yourX-30

tellyou the
depthand

alsorevealsuspended fish. Multiplesignalsonthe

may
not
getany
further.
Keep afew Lowrance Fish-N-Floats in theboat, ready totoss
overboard. WhentheX-30indicatesaschool of
fish,throwthe
buoy
out.
Thestring willunwind untilthesinkerhitsbottom. Then,becauseofthe
marker's flatshape, Itwon't unwind anyfurther. Withthe school thus
marked,youcanmake
your
turnandcomeback
tofish inexactlytheright
spot.Thisisessential
when
you're
farfrornshore ona
big
lake. Unless
you
marktheschooloffishwhen
you're
over
It,youmay notbeabletofindft
again.
BAITFISH
TheImportance ofbaitfishtosuccessful fishing can'tbeover-
emphasized. Theyaretheprinciple
foodofallgame fish inmostwaters.
Baitfisharethe
planktonfeeding foragefish, suchas
minnowsand
shad. Baitfish canalsobetheyoungofgame fish, suchas crappies,
bluegill,andbass.
Mostbaitfish concentrate withinfive feetofthesurface where
sunlight
promotes thegrowth oftheplankton onwhichthey feed. One
methodof
fishingistousethe
X-30tofindthebaitfishfirst. A
schoolofbait
fishwilllooklikea"cloud"onthe
X-30'sdisplay. Usually,gamefishwillbe
nearby, oftendirectly
beneaththeschool ofbait
fish.

WhentheX-3Oisfirstturnedon.

andadjuststhe
sensitivltytotheproperlevel.Italsosets
thescalestoa
range
that
willkeepthebottom
signalonthe display, plus
much more. Using theX430Inthismodeis simple and allows
youto
concentrate onfishing. However, virtuallyevery functionoftheunit is
ruanuallyadjustable
soitcanbe"finetuned"tothe
surrounding
conditions.
Takethismanualontheboat

easily
foundinthislocation
-evenatnight. ToturntheX-3D on,press

ON
key. Anaudible beepreflectsthe keypress. Thechart

displayand
thenumber"0"willflash. Thisnumber
isthe
digital
bottom
depthdisplay. Aftertheunitfindsthe
bottom, it
displays
the
digitaldepth.

TheX-30 can detect this invisible layer in the water, but the
sensitivity
willprobably havetobeturned up

WATERTEMPERATURE ANDTI-IERMOCLINES
Water
temperature hasanimportant-if not controlling-influence
upontheactivitiesofallfish. Fish are cold blooded and theirbodies are
alwaysthetemperatureofthesurroundingwater. During thewinter, colder
water
slowsdowntheirmetabolism. Atthis
time,theyneedabout afourth
asmuchfoodas
they
consume Inthe
summer.
Mostfishdon't
spawnunlessthewatertemperature iswithinrather
narrowlimits. Tofind thedifferenttemperatures, asurfacetemperature
meter, suchas the LDT-3000isavaluable aid toyourboat. Thisunit
provides anextremely quickresponsetoIdentifyingthedesired surface
waterspawningtemperatures forvarious
species. Troutcan't
survive in
streamsthatget toowarm. Bassandotherfisheventuallydieoutwhen
stocked inlakesthatremaintoocoldduring
thesummer. Whilesome
fish
have
awider
temperaturetolerancethan others, each hasacertain range
within
whichittriestostay.Schooling fishsuspendedover
deepwaterlie
at
thelevelthatprovides this
temperature. Weassumethey
are
themost
comfortable here.
The
temperatureofwaterinthelake isseldomconstantfrom
top
tobottom. Layersofdifferenttemperatures form,and the
junction
ofa
warmandcoollayerofwater
isathermocline. The
depthand
thickness of
thethermoclinecan
varywith
the
seasonortimeof
day.In deeplakesthere
may
betwoormore atdifferent depths. Thermoclinesare important to
fishermenbecausetheyareareaswherefish areactive. Manytimes bait

Thismenu adjusts thesize offishthatfishalertwillalarm orflash
on.WhentheX-30 isfirstturned
on,itautomaticallyflashes onmediumand
large fish. You canadjustittoflashonsmall, medium, and largefish,
medium and largefish, orlargefishonly.
To adjustthefish size, first
make certain theX-30isnotin auto-
matic. Next, press 2nd, COMMAND.
Themenu appearswith mediumfish
highlighted. To change
to
small,press
thedown arrow key in the ZONE
ALARMsection. To change tolarge,
presstheuparrowkeyin theZONE
ALARMsection. Waitsix
secondsand
themenu will
disappear, orpressthe
CLEAR key. Theselection you just
madewillnowbeactivated.
GRAYLINE
TheGRAYLlNEfunctionstells
the relative strengthof signals dis-
played
onthescreen. Italso gives
clues tothe
compostition
ofthebot-
tom. Inother
words,you
cantellifthe
bottomissoftorhard. Ahardbottom
returnsa
strongsignal causingawide
gray line. A soft, muddy or weedy
bottomreturnsaweaker
signalwhich
isemphasized withanarrow
gray
line.
If you have two signals of
equalsize,
onewith
gray
andtheother
without,
thenthe
target
withgray isthe
strongersignal. ThisIs helps
distin-
guish
weedsfromtreesonthe
bottom,
orfishfromstructure.
WhentheX-30isfirstturned
on, the GRAYLINE functionis auto-
matically

off,

automaticallydis-
criminates betweenthevalidbottomechoesandfalseechoesfrom
fish,
thermoclines,orothersignals. Thedigitaldisplaywillshowonlythe
bottom
depth. Useitanytime, regardlessofthemodetheX-30isin.
At
power
on,
the
digitalwillflash"0"untilithas"lockedon"tothe
bottomsignal. Onceithas
acquiredthebottom depth, itwilldisplay
the
depth
inthelowerleftofthedisplay.
Therearethreedifferentsizes of
thedigitaldepthdisplay. Theycan
be
easilychanged
withamenuselection. SeetheCOMMANDsectionfor
details.
Toget themaximum performanceoutofyourdigitalsonar, stop
thechart by pressing theSTOP/RESUMEkeyonthekeyboard's chart
section.ThisturnstheX-30intoa
digitalsonar onlyand

TheX-30
hastwodifferentalarms, azonealarmandafishalert.The
zonealarmconsistsofabarthat
displays
ontheleftsideofthescreen. The
alarm"chirps"whenevertheX-30detectsanechoinsidetheboundaries
ofthezonebar.
Fish Alert is an exciting new concept in fish identification. It
identifies fish by flashing their
signals on the display. This"fishflash"
featureadjusts forsmall, medium, andlarge fish. Orlarge fish only,if
desired.
WithFishAlert, anaudiblealarmalsosounds
only
whenfishare
detected. To
separatethealarms,thefishalert'stonesoundsdifferentthan
thezone alarm. Bothalarmsmaybeusedatthesametime.
NOTE:Anotheralarm,calledthe
SHALLOW
ALARM,alertsyou
whenthe
