TO USE THE SPOKEMAN - Your Spokeman is sent from Luminaud with batteries installed but
only slightly charged.
(The government does not want instruments shipped with charged batteries.)
You may
have enough power to try it immediately before charging it. If not, see section below on Charging.
CAUTION: THE SPOKEMAN SPEAKER HAS A STRONG MAGNET- IF YOUHAVE A PACEMAKER, DO NOT
USE, PLACE OR HOLD THE SPOKEMAN ABOVE THE WAIST UNLESS YOUR DOCTOR SAYS IT IS OK.
a) Insert the Spokeman in the case with the volume/off/on switch on the top and the face of the front of
the speaker toward the matching pattern of circular holes in the case. Lengthen the strap to the longest
length and put the strap around your neck so that the Spokeman hangs down in front with the speaker
facing into the room or else fasten it around your waist.
(SEE CAUTION ABOVE)
.
b) Look over the directions with themicrophone you have ordered and then insert the
microphone plug into the “MIC IN” socket on the top of the Spokeman.
c) Put on and position the microphone according to its own instructions keeping the
mic very close to your lower lip with the active part pointing toward your mouth.
d) Turn on the amplifier and begin talking. Notethat thePower Indicator light on the
top will glow green.
(If it glows red, you will need to charge it before use—see Charging Your
Batteries - bottom of the page.)
Gradually increase the volume until you get up to a spot where your voice is
beingheard comingoutof thespeaker.Experimentwithincreasingthevolume further. Ifyougettoapoint
that you get a squealing sound, turn the volume down a little until it stops.

THE LEAST FEEDBACK PROBLEM
. To help avoid feedback:
> Keep the mic and speaker face separated as far as practical.
> Position the mic very close to the lower lip, facing toward the mouth. You should not be able to get a finger -width
between the windscreen and your lip.
> Do not face the speaker closely into furniture, walls or hard surfaces that might cause the sound to “bounce.”
> Keep your head up so that you are looking directly at the people you are talking to. Note that if you are wearing
a headband mic and drop your head down toward your chest, it will probably bring the mic as much as 2 to 6
inches closer to the speaker and may increase feedback. If you have a Collar Mic, bend it so that the active end will
be up at your mouth level when your head is up - so that you don’t have to bend your head to use the mic.
> Make sure your hand is not obstructing the speaker face and do not cup your hand around the microphone.

Hang it around your neck or over your shoulder - Or use the strap to fasten it around your waist.
Or use the belt loop with the Velcro® closure to fasten the case around your belt. In any case, if wearing
the speaker, try to keep it turned slightly to the opposite side of your body from the mic - for instance, if
the mic is toward the right side of your mouth, have the speaker a little toward the left side of your body.
OR Hang the speaker from a chair arm or back or any convenient hook, knob or handle.
OR, if you wish, take the speaker out of the carrying case and set it on a table, desk or lap tray
In any placement, make sure the speaker is pointing AWAY from your face and the mic.

When the power indicator light turns from green to red, the Spokeman batteries need
charging. Plug the plug on the charger cord into the Spokeman jack labeled 12V DC

does NOT go off when the charge is complete. It stays on as long as the charger is
plugged in.) The need for charging will vary according to use. You may do a partial charge if you wish.
For instance, if the batteries have been in use and you want a full charge to travel with, it is alright to top
them off with a few hours of charge even though the power light does not show that a charge is needed.

The Spokeman will arrive set at “LOW“. This setting reduces feedback problems when you are in a small
room. If you need stronger amplification for larger rooms, nosier areas or greater distance indoors or out,
you can switch the LOW/HI Power Control Switch to the HI position.
Remove the battery cover.
Remove the two left side batteries over the switch. They will come out more
BACK
easily if you remove the second from the left battery first, then the far left battery.

THE MAGNETIC PULL OF THE SPEAKER MAY MAKE REMOVING THEM A LITTLE HARDER THAN YOU EXPECT.
Move the switch to the preferred position.
Carefully return the batteries to the correct position. Note the diagram on the inside
of the back cover. Put the cover back on the battery compartment.

As you will see, changing this switch is quite a nuisance. Most people will no doubt prefer one
setting or the other for general use & will only change the LOW/HI setting for a specialsituation.

After a year or two of use, your rechargeable batteries may need to be replaced. Or it may be that you are in an
area where you can’t recharge and you want to put in regular Alkaline AAA non-rechargeable batteries.
a) Open back cover and remove batteries.
THE MAGNETIC PULL OF THE SPEAKER MAY MAKE REMOVING THEM A LITTLE MORE DIFFICULT THAN YOU EXPECT.
b) Insert the 6 new batteries carefully as shown on the inside of the back cover. Be sure to insert batteries with their

SOUND? Make sure that the volume is turned on/up with the green power indicator light glowing and that the
mic plug is inserted all the way into the socket.
If the power indicator light is red and you are using rechargeable batteries, put them on charge.
If the problem persists, change batteries for a fresh set of non-rechargeable AAA batteries. If this takes care of the
problem, that is a good indication a new set of rechargeable batteries is needed.
And/or if you have another mic that fits the Spokeman, try switching mics to see if there is a problem in the mic.

DISTORTION ? Breathy, popping or hissing sounds when talking - move mic to one side or the other of the mouth -
placement to the side will avoid picking up these air noises from sounds like “s” and “p.”
“Tinny” sound from the speaker - reduce your own voice volume or move the mic a bit farther from your mouth
or a bit farther to the side of your mouth to avoid putting more sound into the system than the speaker can handle.
