When WorkingInsidea Computer
1. Before takingcovers off acomputer,perform thefollowingsteps:
2. Turn off the computerandanyperipheraldevices.
3. Disconnectthe computerand peripheralpowercords fromtheirAC outletsorinletsinordertoprevent
electricshock orsystemboarddamage.
In addition,take noteofthesesafetyguidelines whenappropriate:
§To helpavoidpossibledamage tosystemsboards,waitfiveseconds afterturningoff thecomputerbefore
removinga component,removing asystemboard,ordisconnecting aperipheraldevice fromthe computer.
§Whenyoudisconnecta cable,pull onits connectororonits strain-reliefloop,notonthecableitself.Some
cables have a connectorwith locking tabs.If youaredisconnecting this typeofcable,pressinonthe
locking tabsbefore disconnecting thecable.Asyoupullconnectors apart,keepthemevenly aligned toavoid
bending any connectorpins.Also, beforeconnecting acable,makesureboth connectorsare correctly
orientedandaligned.

ProtectingAgainstElectrostatic Discharge
Electrostatic Discharge(ESD) Warning
ElectrostaticDischarge (ESD)is theenemy ofsemiconductordevices.Youshouldalways take
precautionstoeliminateanyelectrostaticcharge fromyour body and clothingbeforetouching any
semiconductordevice orcardby usinganelectrostaticwriststrapand/orrubbermat.
Staticelectricity canharm systemboards.Perform service atanESDworkstationandfollow properESDprocedures
toreduce the riskofdamage tocomponents.Magma strongly encouragesyoutofollow properESDprocedures,
whichcaninclude wriststraps andsmocks,whenservicingequipment.
Youcanalsotake the following steps topreventdamage fromelectrostatic discharge (ESD):
•Whenunpackinga static-sensitivecomponent fromitsshipping carton,donotremovethe component’s anti-
static packagingmaterialuntil youarereadytoinstallthecomponent ina computer.Justbefore
unwrappingtheanti-static packaging,besureyouare atanESDworkstationoraregrounded.
•Whentransportinga sensitive component,firstplaceitinananti-staticcontainerorpackaging.
•Handleall sensitive components atanESDworkstation.If possible,useanti-staticfloorpads and workbench
pads.
•Handle components andboards with care.Don’ttouchthe components orcontacts onaboard.Holda
boardbyitsedgesorby its metalmounting bracket.

The ROBEN-3isavailableinFIVEmodelconfigurations thatinclude Thunderbolt™andnative PCI Expresshost
computerconnectionoptions.It has thepotentialtohousethree-full length,full-height PeripheralComponent
InterconnectExpress(PCIe)cards.There are threedifferentROBEN-3modelsofferingunique features forfull
customization.The ROBEN-3basicmodeloffersthepotentialof(2)5.25-inexpansionbays,while the ROBEN-3
storage modeloffers (8)2.5-inchhotswappablebays,and finally the ROBEN-3MacMiniversionallowsfora direct
integrationofanApple MacMini,makingitthe mostversatile Thunderbolt™producteveroffered byMagma.
The ROBEN-3hasa rack-mountablealuminum chassisdesigned forintegrated removable storageexpansion,with
roomforup to8hotpluggable2.5” SSD,SASorSATAharddrives.Thisadded powercanbe channeled through
lightning fastThunderbolttechnology at10Gbps,with the optionof20Gbpsbandwidth with the roll-out of
Thunderbolt2capabledevices like thenewMac Pro. With 3-SlotPCIeandinternalstorageexpansion,ROBEN-3
enablestheserious audioprofessionaltotransform theircomputerintoa powerfulworkstation-asidekickforthe
creative hero.

ROBEN-3will alsoallow youthe optiontohostaMacminiwithinthe chassis creatinganintegratedrackmount server

The following steps willguide youthroughtheinstallationofyour MagmaExpansionSystem.
CAUTION
Hardwareinstallationshallbeperformed onlybyqualifiedservicepersonnel.
Electrostatic Discharge(ESD) Warning
All add-incards aresusceptible toelectrostaticdischarge.Whenmovingcards,itisbesttocarry the
cards inanti-staticpackaging.If youneed tosetacircuitcard down,besure toplace itinside oron
top ofananti-static surface.Formore information,see“Protecting AgainstElectrostaticDischarge”
inthePreface.
WARNING
Highvoltages arepresentinside theexpansionchassiswhenthe unit’spowercord ispluggedinto
anelectricaloutlet.Disconnectthepowercord fromthe ACoutletbeforeremoving theenclosure
cover.Turning thesystempoweroff atthepoweron/off switchdoesnotremovepowerto
components.Highvoltageis still present.

Remove slotcovers and installPCIecards.
Make surethatallcards are fullyseatedintheirconnectors.Whencorrectly seated,there will beafirm resistance
whenyoupullupgently onthe card.To keepthecardsinplace,secure theminthe enclosure with theirretaining
screws.Aftersecuring thecards verify thattheydonottoucheachother.
ExtraPower
Some PCIecards require extrapower.There are four 4-pinMolexAUXpowerconnectors thatcanbe used for
providingextrapowertocards.And Two 6-pin+2PCIe connectors forGPUs.

High Power PCIe cardinstallation
HighPowerPCIecardsalsoknownas HighEndPCIecardssuchas GPUsandothersimilartypeofcardrequires an
additionalpower(orAUXPower)tooperate.Mostofthese HighpowerPCIecards have anauxiliarypoweradapter
cables thatare included withitwhenyoubuy them.If itis notavailable,thereare6-pinPCIE connectors builtinto
the powersupplythatcanbeusedtoprovide powertoyourGPUs orHighPowerPCIecards.
OtherHighpowerPCIecards may usedifferent Aux poweradapterconnectors.Youcanconnectthemtoany ofthe
4-pinMolexconnectors available onthepowersupply.

NOTE
If atall possible,plug all powercords fromtheexpansionchassisandyour hostcomputerinto
a sharedpowerstrip,preferably one thathassurgeand noise suppressioncircuitry builtinto
it.
1. Plug inpowercordtoRoben-3.Make sure the PowerSwitchonthepowersupply is turnedOFF.
2. Turn powersupplyswitchtoONposition.
3. Two greenLED ontheInterface cardareilluminated.NoLEDs are illuminated onthe backplane.

Connect ThunderboltCable
AttachThunderboltcable intoeithertop orbottomportonthe Roben-3.Plug inDisplay Monitor,DVI/HDMI,or
Display.Ifnodisplaywill be used,youcandaisy chainotherThunderboltdevices.Plug inthe otherendofthe
ThunderboltcabletotheThunderboltportonthe computer.
Connectthe Thunderboltcabletoone ofthe ports ontheback ofRoben3andconnecttheotherendofthecable to
the Thunderboltportonthe computer.Youcanusetheavailable Thunderboltport forattaching a Thunderbolt
device oranexternaldisplay monitor.
Powering On and Off the ExpansionUnit
Roben-3will automaticallyturns ON whenthe computeris turned ON.AWhitelight located onthe front panelwill
shine whentheexpansionchassis is ON.Roben-3willautomaticallyturn OFFwhenthecomputeris turnedOFF or
goesintoStandbymode.If eitherend oftheThunderboltcableisremovedwhile thesystemisON,theexpansion
chassiswill automatically powerdown.
The White light onthe front ofRoben-3is notanON (On-offpushbutton), itsimply indicates whetherthe chassisis
onoroff.If eitherend oftheThunderboltcableisdisconnected,Roben-3will automaticallyturn off.

card is seatedinthe PCIEslotproperly.

statusoftheboard.Italsoservesas failureindicatorsandhelps introubleshooting hardwareproblems.
Whenthe Thunderbolt™2Interface card is fully operationaland with anexternalDisplay device attached,7solid
GreenLEDs(D1,D3,D4,D5,D6,D7 and D9)areilluminated.See picture on FIGURE T2-A .
