Transponder Guide

Special Conditions of Use
Bridge Mate™ RadaScan transponders are classied as intrinsically safe apparatuses and associated apparatuses, and can be used:
 in Zones 1 and 2 with ammable gases and vapors belonging to gas groups IIA/B. (Reference: EU ATEX directive 94/9/EC,
Annex II, 1.06)
· in Class I, II and III, Div 1 hazardous (classied) locations. (Reference: USA UL STD 913)
Instructions for Safe Use
· Bridge Mate™ RadaScan transponders contain no user-serviceable parts. They can only be serviced by Marine Technologies or other
approved service representative.
· The front or back panels of the transponder should never be removed in a hazardous area.
· Transponders are only certied for use in ambient temperatures between -13° F to 131° F (-25° C to 55° C) and should not be used
outside this temperature range.
· The front cover of the transponder presents a static hazard and should only be cleaned using a damp cloth.

Positioning and Mounting
The location, range and orientation of the transponders in relation to the sensor have a signicant eect on the tracking performance
of the Bridge Mate™ RadaScan system, and hence on the quality of the position data sent to the DP system.
RadaScan is a radar-based system. Metallic structures reect the microwave beam transmitted by the sensor, and can cause multipath
interference, where ghost images are reported by the system. However, this unwanted phenomenon can be prevented by carefully
positioning the transponders according to the guidelines on the following page.
Maintenance and Servicing
Bridge Mate™ RadaScan transponders do not contain any user-serviceable parts. The
unique transponder ID is programmed at the factory and can only be changed by the
manufacturer.
The transponder will operate continuously for one year from the date it was switched on.
The battery replacement date is written on a label axed to the back of the transponder.
Transponders must be serviced annually by Marine Technologies or other approved
service representative.
Transponder ON/OFF Switch
Switching the Transponder On or Off
Bridge Mate™ RadaScan transponders are always switched on before they are shipped. If
the transponder needs to be switched on or o, follow these steps:
1. Move the transponder to a dry, non-hazardous area.
2. Remove the back cover from the transponder.
3. Move the ON/OFF switch to the required position.
4. Replace the back cover, ensuring that the seal is good.
Note: The front or back panels of the transponder
should never be removed in a hazardous or wet area.

Poor Location:
· Steep angle of elevation prevents vessel from picking up transponder on approach.
· Shorter range inhibits performance in high sea states.
· Often surrounded by obstructions and radar-reecting metalwork.
· Does not provide adequate cover during all vessel maneuvers.
Transponders Should be Mounted:
· At a height no lower than 6.5 feet (2 meters) below the vessel-mounted sensor.
· At a height no higher than 16 feet (5 meters) above the vessel-mounted sensor.
· On the outside corners of the rig or platform to minimize the amount of metallic
structure around them.
Good Location:
· Good angle of incidence.
· Lower angle of elevation allows vessel to pick up transponder on approach.
· Longer range aids performance in high sea states.
· Usually clear of obstructions and away from enclosed corners.
· Provides adequate cover during vessel maneuvers.
Transponders Should NOT be Mounted:
· On inside corners.
· Below an overhang.
· On lower service decks below a main-deck overhang.

Use the swivel bracket to point the
transponder towards the RadaScan vessel.
Mount the transponder so that its
longest sides are vertical.
The front of the transponder must have a
clear, unobstructed line-of-sight to
seaward, facing towards the RadaScan
vessel.
Secure the transponder at the top
and bottom to prevent movement in
severe weather.
