• Place DSS70 on a non-slip surface.
• Do not expose DSS70 to direct sunlight or other sources of heat.
• Use DSS70 at temperatures between +50C (41 Fahrenheit) and
+550C (131 Fahrenheit).
• Make sure that DSS70 is at least one meter away from any radio
equipment, such as pagers, television sets, device containing coils,
otherwise its performance may be impaired.
• Avoid placing DSS70 in rooms where there is lot of dust, since this
shortens its useful life.

Installation of DSS70
The Installation procedure is divided in two parts:

Matrix
DSS70 User’s Guide
10
Hardware Installation:
CAUTION:
The system must be in power off condition during complete hardware
installation.
1. Switch off the system. Wait for 10 seconds to allow the power
supply to discharge.
2. Attach COM PORT end of the Splitter Cable to the system. Fix
the mounting screws to get proper connections.
3. Lay the DSS70 main cable from the system to DSS70 (reception
area). The cable end with MDF wires (two hanging wires) is to be
connected on the system side. The other end is to be taken on
the DSS70 side.
4. Decide on an unused extension to be used for the operator
extension. Do not select a power-down extension.
5. Take a small piece of telephone cable. Connect one end of this
telephone cable to the MDF wires (hanging wires) coming out
from the DSS70 main cable. Connect other end of this telephone
cable to the unused extension on the MDF. Polarity is not
important here. Make proper joints with twisting and soldering. To
prevent shorts and sparks, secure the joints with good quality
insulation tape.
6. Go to the reception area.
7. Decide on a convenient place on the desk for the DSS70. Keep
the DSS70 facing the operator.
8. Route the DSS70 main cable coming from the system up to the
DSS70 connector. Extra length can be hidden in a convenient
place.
9. Connect the cable to the DSS70. Put the screws to avoid
frequent disconnections.
10. Connect the handset to the DSS70.
11. DSS70 main cable is of 10 meters.
Software Installation:
1. Switch on the system.
2. The DSS70 will display with message: “MATRIX DSS READY”
3. Enter program mode from any extension. Please refer
‘Programming the System’ in Team/Focus/Empire System Manual
for more details. At this stage, the DSS70 is not ready to accept
commands.

Matrix
DSS70 User’s Guide 11
4. Program main operator extension using 391-Extension.
5. Program auxiliary operator extension using 392-Extension.
6. Activate the DSS70 by command: 611-1.
7. The system will restart.
8. The DSS70 displays the message ‘Operator Absent’.
9. Enter the programming mode (System Engineer and Admin) and
make the Operator Present by using command 612-1.
10. The DSS70 displays ‘Operator Present’. Please refer ‘Operator’
and ‘Operator Console’ in Team/Focus/Empire System Manual for
more details.
Now DSS70 is ready for use. Test the operation by making and
receiving few internal and trunk calls.

Direct Station Selection(DSS):
DSS70 is a Direct Station Selection operator console. Accessing a
trunk or an extension is allowed with a direct key. There is no need to
dial long extension line numbers. The DSS70 supports 36 Extension
DSS keys and 10 Trunk DSS keys.
In case the main system is configured for more than 36 extension
lines/10 trunks, ‘page’ key can be used to access higher group of
extensions/trunks. Extension lines and Trunks divided logically in two
pages, in default condition extension line 201 to 236 and trunk 1 to 10
can be accessed in page1 whereas, extension lines 301 to 336 and
trunk 11 to 20 can be accessed in page2.
PAGE Light Status Extension Lines Trunks
Page #1 Off 201-236 T1-T10
Page #2 On 301-336 T11-T20
‘page’ is a lighted key. The status of this key informs the user about
currently active page.
Using the ‘page’ key, the user can toggle between page one and page
two. When user is in page one, the LED housed in ‘page’ key is OFF.
On pressing this key, the user enters page two, LED housed in this
key gets turned ON and all the extension lines and trunks available in
page two can be accessed.
The Programmable Keys
• As explained, DSS70 houses in all 70 keys. These keys are
functionally divided into five groups viz. Extension line DSS keys,
Trunk DSS keys, Main keys, Dialing keys and Special function
keys.
Extension DSS keys:
• 36 keys are used for as many extension lines. These extension
lines can be accessed directly using these keys. These keys also
house a LED. LED gives the status of the extension line at any
point of time. If the number of extension lines exceeds 36, then
PAGE key can be used to access higher group of extension lines.
However, in case of Empire if the number of extension lines
exceed 72 then those extension lines cannot be accessed by a
DSS key. To access those extension lines, the operator need to
dial the extension number.

DSS70 User’s Guide
16
Trunk DSS Keys:
• 10 keys are used for as many trunks. These trunks can be
accessed directly using these keys. These keys also house a
LED. LED gives the status of the trunk at any point of time. If the
number of trunks exceeds 10, then PAGE key can be used to
access higher group of trunks.
Main Keys:
• Four bigger keys are provided in separate group for the function
used repeatedly. These functions areAnswer, Hold, Transfer and
Release.
Dialing Keys:
• This set of keys is same as a normal dial pad used in any push-
button type of telephone instrument. Thirteen keys viz. 1-9, 0, *, #
and FLASH are used. These keys can be used for dialing
extension lines, any telephone number on the trunk and also
during programming.
Special Function Keys:
• The DSS70 possess 7 function specific keys viz. ‘CNF’, ‘CHN’,
‘MEM’, ‘ACK’, ‘RDL’, ‘FUN’, ‘PAGE’.

MEM Memory Dialing
ACK Acknowledge Ring: Used to switch OFF the ring
RDL Redial

and trunk access
LED
• DSS70 houses two types of LEDs
1. Extension/Trunk LEDs
2. System LEDs

DSS70 User’s Guide 17
Extension/Trunk LEDs
• There are 36 red LEDs for as many extension lines and 10 red
LEDs for as many trunks. These LEDs are mounted in the keys.
There is a window in the key top so that LED emits light through it
and is visible to the user. The current status of each extension line/
trunk is shown on the relevant LED. If the number of extensions
exceed 36, PAGE key is used to get status of any extension in the
higher group.
The table given below shows every possible status of an extension
line/trunk.
Sr. LED Status Meaning

Features of DSS70
Operator Console Active/Inactive:
Matrix PBX systems are designed to work with or without the DSS70.
Simply connecting DSS70 with the system does not make it
operational. DSS70 has to be activated with a command from the SE
mode.
Doing so the system restarts. If the handshake between DSS70 and
the system is proper, “OPERATOR ABSENT” message is displayed
on the LCD. If DSS70 is to be taken out of service, it should be
deactivated. This could be done either from DSS70 or any other
extension. Doing so the system restarts. LCD on DSS70 goes blank.
Also, all the LEDs if ON at that point of time turn OFF. The system
does not respond to any key. Trunk calls are routed to programmed
extensions. If an extension dials ‘9’, the call is routed to the secondary
extension. In case of Team/Focus/Empire-USA dial ‘0’ to route the
calls to the secondary extension.
Operator Absent/Present:
When DSS70 is installed and the operator is using it, the system is
said to be in “Operator Present” mode. This happens during normal
office hours when the operator is on duty. If the operator is not
present during evening hours or holidays, the system is said to be
running in “Operator Absent” mode.
Sr. Operator Present Operator Absent
1 All trunk calls can be directed

destinations.
2 If an extension user dials ‘9’,
he gets music and his call is
directed to DSS70. In case of
