This Service Manual describes the operation,
disassembly,troubleshooting, and repairof Maytag®
Dishwashers.It is intended for use byauthorized
servicerswho troubleshoot andrepair these units.
NOTE: It is assumed that users of this manual are
familiar with the use of tools and equipment used
totroubleshoot and repair electrical,and
mechanical systems; and understand the
terminology used to describe and discuss them.
Related Publications
This is a base service manual, covering a range of
similar models. It is intended to be used in conjunction
with the Parts Manual and Technical Sheet covering
specific model being serviced.
General Precautions and Warnings
•Disposeof discarded appliance and shipping or
packing material properly.
•Do not allow children to play in or on dishwasher.
•Do not abuse, sit, stand or play on door or racks of a
dishwasher.
•Useonly detergents and rinse agents recommended for
useinadishwasher.
•Storedishwasherdetergent and rinse agents out of the
reachof children.
•Ifthedishwasherdrainsintoafooddisposer, make
suredisposeriscompletelyemptybeforerunning
dishwasher.
•Repairsshouldbedoneby a qualified technician.
•Do not tamper with controls.
•Donot touch the heating element during or immediately
afteruse.
•Load sharp knives with the handles up to reduce the
risk of cut-type injuries or damaging seal.
To avoid risk of personal injury or death due to
electrical shock:
•Groundingwires andwirescolored likegrounding
wires are NOT to be used as current carrying
conductors.
•Standard acceptedcolorcoding for groundwires
is green or green with a yellow stripe.
•Groundingwires shouldnot beremovedfrom
individualcomponents whileservicing, unless
componentis to beremoved and replaced.
•Replaceallremovedgroundingwires before
completingservice.

To avoid death, severe personal injury, fire or
electrical shock when using dishwasher observe
the following:
• Observe all local codes and ordinances.
•Disconnectelectrical power todishwasher before
servicing.
•Connectdishwasher to agrounded metal,
permanentwiring system.
•DONOT ground to gasline.
•DO NOT ground to cold water pipe if pipe is
interrupted by plastic, non-metallic gaskets, or
otherinsulating (non-conducting)materials.
•Check with a qualified electrician if you are not
surethis appliance is properlygrounded.
•Thisdishwasher is designed tooperate on
regular house current (120 V, 60 Hz). Use a
circuit equipped with a 15 ampere fuse or circuit
breaker. Use a 20 amperefuseif dishwasher is
connectedwith a food waste disposer.
•Undercertain conditions, hydrogen gas maybe
produced in a hot water system that has not
beenused for 2weeks or more. HYDROGEN
GAS IS EXPLOSIVE. If hot water system has
notbeen used for suchaperiod, before using
dishwasher, turn on all hot water faucets and let
waterflow from eachfor several minutes.Thiswill
releaseany accumulated hydrogengas.
HYDROGEN GAS IS FLAMMABLE. Do not
smoke or use an open flame during this time.
•Do not store or use combustible materials,
gasolineor other flammablevapors and liquidsin
the vicinity of this or any other appliance.
•Do not wash plastic items unless marked
"dishwashersafe" or theequivalent. If not
marked,check with manufacturerfor
recommendations.Items that are notdishwasher
safe may melt and create a potential fire hazard.
•Toavoidentrapment and/orsuffocation,remove
dooror door latch mechanism fromany
dishwasher that is discarded or not in use.

Will Not Fill
Water Access Valve
Checkto determine if the valve is turned on and wateris
availableto the Dishwasher.Check water pressure.
Circuit Breaker/Fuse
Checkfor tripped breakerorblown fuse. Resetorreplace
as necessary.
Door Latch
Check door switches for continuity. With door switches
engaged,no continuity, replace switch.
Float
Check float position. If in the up position, check for
obstructionor disengagement from the Float SwitchArm.
Float Switch
If the float is in the down position, check the switch for
continuity. If no continuity, replace the Float Switch.
Water Valve
Check Solenoid for continuity. No continuity, replace
Water Valve. Check Inlet Screen for restrictions. Clean
screen or replace Water Valve as necessary. (See section
5).
Wiring/Electrical Connections
Checkfor loose or frayedwireterminal connections.
Checkfor broken wire withinharness. Repair or replace
as necessary.
Float
Ensure that the Float isn't stuck in the down position.
Checkfor sediment buildup. Clean and/or replaceas
necessary.
Float Switch Actuator Lever
Check the actuator lever on the bracket. It must be able
to move freely. Repair or replace as necessary. (See
section 5).
Float Switch
Check Float Switch for continuity with the Float in the up
position. If continuity is present and Float moves up and
downfreely, replace Float Switch.

Units covered in this manual are polarized. Reversing polarity of a unit or any of its components will cause
damage.To avoid reversing polarity, any wires disconnected orremoved during service must bereconnected to the
samelocation. To ensure wiresarereconnected to the proper location, tagorotherwisemark the wires before
disconnectingorremoving.
Poor Water Circulation
Water Level - Too Low
Normalwater fill should be atlevel depicted by arrows.
PumpAssembly
Checkassembly for obstructions or restrictedmovement
of parts. Repair and/or replace parts as necessary.
Overflows
Water Valve
Checkthat water continues to flow whenelectrical power
is turned off. If the water continues to flow without
electricalpower, replace WaterValve.
NOTE: Lowwater pressure can result in failureof the
Water Valve to close properly.

Spray Arms
Check all Spray Arms for blockage of water ports or
cracks.Check for properrack loading to avoidinterference
withSprayArms during wash action. Checkforproper
sealing,fastening, and movementof SprayArms. Repair
as necessary.
Filters
Checkfor blockage of Strainer,Primary Filter, and Filter
Support.Repair as necessary.
Detergent Cup Cover
Checkspring hingeoperation ofDetergent CupCover.
Repairas necessary.
Detergent Cup
Check operation ofDetergent CupAssembly, Wax Motor,
Actuator,Linkage, and CoverLatch. Repairand/orreplace
parts as necessary. Note: For testing of Wax Motor, see
Section 2.
RinseDispenser
Checklevel of rinse aidin reservoir. Check rinseaid
dispensersetting.
Will Not Drain
Inadequate Drainage
CheckDrain Pump forproper operation. Checkthe drain
pipeconnections and repair asneeded. If draining into the
garbagedisposal, check for unprocessedfood waste at
drainhose connection to disposer. Cleanoutas needed.
Drain Hose
Check drain hose for kink or restrictions. Reroute or
removeany restriction ofdrainhose as needed.
PumpAssembly
Check pump assembly for obstructions or restricted
parts. Repair or replace parts as necessary.
Wiring/Electrical Connections
Checkfor loose or frayedwireterminal connections.
Checkfor broken wire withinharness. Repair or replace
as necessary.

Checkmanifold and Docking Stationfor good sealand no
leaks.
Poor Drying
Water Temperature
Checkfor low watertemperature. Temperature shouldbe
between120 - 150degrees Fahrenheit. If not,advise
consumertoadjustwaterheatersetting. Encourage
consumerto purge water lines tothedishwasher area
priorto startingthe dishwasher.
CycleOptions
Adviseconsumer useof options availableon dishwasher
thatimprove drying. Options that improvedrying are
Heated Dry, and 160° Wash.
Detergent
Checkwater hardness. Instruct consumer on detergent
usage,one teaspoon ofdetergent per grainof water
hardness.
RinseDispenser
Checklevel of rinseaid in reservoir. Checkdispenser
settingunder cap. Use "MAX" for hardwater conditions.
Improper Rack Loading
Check how the consumer loads the dishes into the racks.
Improperloading of some types ofdishescan trap water
which causes dishes not to dry.
Heating Element
Check load readings listed onTechnical Sheet located
behindToe Panel.

Thermostat
Check mating surface of the High Limit Thermostat face
to surface of tub enclosure. Contact area must be flat.
Adjust the thermostat placement if necessary. See
Technical Sheet, located behindToe Panel for thermostat
data.
Water Leaks
Installation
CheckDishwasher forproper levelingand squarenessin
cabinet.
Door Alignment
Checkproper alignment of DoorLiner to Door Gasket.
Door Gasket
Checkfor torn ordamagedDoor Gasket. Repairor
replace as necessary.
Hoses
Check for loose hose clamps or hoses that leak. Tighten
hose clamps or replace hoses as needed.
Spray Arms / Manifold
Check for cracks and replace as necessary.
Detergent / Rinse Aid Dispenser Seal
CheckRinseAid Dispenser Seal forproper positioning or
cracking.Reposition or replace asneeded.
Water Valve
CheckWaterValvebody for damage and leaks. Replaceif
necessary. Also, check plumbing connections to Water
Valve.
Wash Motor Assembly
Check for water leak between PumpAssembly and tub.
Drain Pump Assembly
Check PumpAssembly Housing for cracks. Check Drain
Pump "O" ring for leaks.

Banging
Checkfor loose SprayArms. Check fordishes interfering
withSprayArm rotation.See loading information inthe
User's Guide at the end of this manual.
Hammering/Chattering
CheckWaterValve for noise,low voltage,or highvalve
coil resistance. Replace Water Valve if needed. Also,
check incoming water supply line for proper size and
pressure. Make sure the supply line is secured.
Grinding
Check for objects in PumpAssembly. If objects are
found, inspect PumpAssembly for damage. Repair as
needed.
Vibration
Checkcomponents for source of vibration. Adjustand/or
tightenas needed.
Will Not Start Or Program
Control Board
Checkincoming voltage toControl Board.
Membrane Switch
Checkfor properoperationof MembraneSwitch.See
membranereadings on theTechnical Sheet located
behindtoe panel.
NOTE: Makesure the pin connectors are makingproper
contact with pins on the Control Board. If the
voltageiscorrectintotheControl Board, and the
boardwill not activate,replace board.
Will Not Fill
Water Valve
Check Water Valve circuit. See Technical Sheet for water
valvedata locatedbehind toepanel.
NOTE: Makesure the pin connectors are makingproper
contact with pins on the Control Board.

Testing Procedures
Electrical Test Equipment
Theequipment requiredto service thesemodels depends
largelyupon the condition encountered. Locating a
malfunctionwill often require the use ofelectricaltesting
equipment such as:
ApplianceTest Meter
Clamp-OnAmmeter
MotorTest Cord
Appliance Test Meter
AnAppliance Test Meter is a multi-purpose tester
combininganAC/DC voltage testerwith a multi-range
ohmmeter.
The easiest means of testing electrical components is
"Continuity Testing" with an appliance meter. Continuity
is a complete or continuous path from one point in an
electrical circuit to another.
Theobvious advantages ofbeing able tocheck electrical
componentsand circuits without power applied is oneof

until the inoperative part is found. By reviewing the list of
possibleelectrical problems underagiven condition, and
thenperforming appropriate continuity checksof the parts
involved,you should be able to locatethe electrical
componentwhich isinoperative.
NOTE: When checking components or circuit paths for
continuity, external wiring should be disconnected to
eliminatefalse readings throughexternalpaths. Isolate
what you want to test.
Digital Test Meter
can be used to check for open
or closed circuits, measure

Voltage Checks
Generally, these checks will consist of taking readings
at the wall receptacle in order to determine the
availability of voltage to the product. Voltage checks on
individualcomponents of aproduct are not
recommended due to the possibility of electrical shock.
Componentpart testing is best accomplished through
continuity checks with anAppliance Test Meter.
NOTE: Use of the meter on voltage higher than the
indicatedrange may cause permanentdamage to the
meter. To prevent damage,firstselect highest range and
thenlower the range forreadings which fall withinthe
lowerscale.
Clamp-On Ammeter
can be used to detect shorts.
Overloadson thecircuitbreaker
or fuse can be traced
toeither the appliance
or circuit breaker by
checking the current
draw.
Each circuit in an appliance has a "Normal" current
draw, which is an indicationofthe performance of that
circuit. Current draw levels of less than or more than
normalgive clues to possible malfunctions. The clamp-
onammeter measures these circuits without breaking
the circuit by measuring the strength of the magnetic
fielddeveloped aroundeach conductor. Current isread
by separating the conductors and clamping the jaws of
theammeter around each conductor on whichcurrent is
read. Lowamperage readings indicateproblems,such
asdamaged heating elements, etc. High amperage
readingsindicate the unit being tested isoperating under
anincreased mechanical or electrical load.
NOTE: Overloads on a circuit breaker or fuse can be
traced to the product being tested or the circuit breaker
(or fuse) by checking the products current draw. If the
amperagereading is less thanthe breaker reading, the
breaker or fuse box is at fault.
Use of Ammeter on dishwasher:
1. Motor Current - the reading can be taken at the
leads on the motor start relay or at the male connec-
tor.
2. Heating Element Current - The reading can be
taken using either lead to the element.
Motor Test Cord
A motor test cord may be used to electrically check
operationof the variouselectrical components without
removing them from the unit. Testing in this manner
merelydetermines whether or not thepartwill function
independentlyof other electrical components. In orderto
make accurate tests, proper connection of the motor test
cord is important. With the aid of the drawings under
Drive Motor Test, installation of the motor test cord may
be done quickly and accurately.
Grounding and Polarity
Thereceptacle used for allMaytag products operating on
120VAC must be properlygrounded and polarized.
Thepower cord used onthe appliances should be
equippedwith athree (3)prong polarized groundingplug

Wax Motor Check
Detergent / Rinse Aid Dispenser
A single Wax Motor is used to activate both the release of
theDetergent Cup Coverand the rinseaid from the
reservoir.
To check the operationofthe WaxMotor, removal from
theDispenser Retainer or Inner Door isnot necessary.
First, snap the Detergent Cup Door shut. Then, connect
a Power Test Cord across the two terminals of the Wax
Motor. Plug the Power Test Cord into a 120 VAC
receptacle. The plunger in the center of the Wax Motor
should "push out" and actuate the Dispenser in
approximately45-60 seconds. Remove voltageto the
Wax Motor and allow the plunger to retract into the Wax
Motor. Apply voltage to the WaxMotor again and observe
forproper liftingof therinse aid plunger.

Wax Motor Check- Vent
A single continuous duty wax motor is used to operate
thevent.
Connect a Power Test Cord across the two terminals of
the Wax Motor. Plug the Power Test Cord into a 120 VAC
receptacle.The punger shouldextend (push out)and
force the Vent Flap tight against the vent opening in
approximately45-60 seconds.Whenpower isremoved
from the Wax Motor, the plunger should retract along with
the Vent Flap, opening the vent.

Foil Bottom
Removal
Partial removal of Foil Bottom will allow access to the
Water Valve, Float SwitchAssembly, Electrical Junction
Box, hoses, thermostats, Start Capacitor and Motor/

1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. Lay down a protective pad. Carefully tilt the unit on its
back,onto the protectivepad. Remove 2 fasteners
from the locations shown below .
3. Partially remove the Foil Bottom by folding down to
access the Water Valve, Float Switch Assembly,
Electrical Junction Box, hoses, thermostats, Start

2. Remove the 2 screws securing the top to the
mountingflanges positioned under thetop in front.
3. Carefullyslidetop forward todisengage spacer
washers from slots in the rear of the cabinet flanges.

Faucet
Removal
Thefaucet couplerprovides a meansfor filling and
draining the portable dishwasher. It connects to a special
adapter which in turn is connected to a faucet at a sink.
When the dishwasher is not in use, the faucet coupler is
storedina retainer on the rear of the dishwasher cabinet.
1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. RemoveWoodTop,see"WoodTop" removal
procedure.
3. RemoveFoil Bottom,see "Foil Bottom" removal
procedure.
4. Disconnect power cord from the terminal box.
Disconnectthe fill hose fromthe water valve andthe
drainhose from thedrainpump.
5. Removethe wiretie securing the drain andfill hoses
to a rib on the tub.
NOTE: Repair of the faucet coupler can be done
without removing the hose assembly from the
dishwasher.

1. Disconnect power to the machine.

3. Removethe 11Torx™ screws along the sidesand
topof the Inner DoorPanel.
4. Separate theInner Door Panelfrom the OuterDoor.
5. Disconnect wires from the Vent and Dispenser Wax
Motorsbefore pullingthe Inner DoorPanel away
fromthe Dishwasher.
Detergent / Rinse Dispenser Mechanism
and Reservoir
Checking Operation
1. Disconnect power to the machine.
2. Remove theInner Door Panel,see "Inner Door Panel"
removalprocedure.
3. SnaptheDetergentDoor shut.
4. Gentlylift the lever of the dispenser mechanism until
a click is herd. The Detergent Door releases. Re-
leasethe lever.
5. Lift the lever again. Now the actuator will lift the Rinse
AidPlunger.
