TheMR7082maybeinstalledina Mclntoshcabinet
orcustominstalledinfurnitureofyourchoice.Always
provideadequateventilation.Neverplaceitaboveheat
generatingcomponentssuchashighpoweredampli-
fiers.Provide1 ½ inches(3cm]ofspaceabovethe
tunersoasnottointerferewitha coolingairflow.
CONVENIENT,SIMPLEANDSECURE.
ThePANLOCsystemofinstallingequipmentconve-
nientlyandsecurely,isa productofMclntoshresearch.
BydepressingthetwoPANLOCbuttonsonthefront
panel,theinstrumentcanbelockedfirmlyinplaceor
unlockedsothatthechassiscanslideforward,giving
youeasyaccesstothetopandrearpanels.
Thetrouble-freelifeofanelectronicinstrumentis
greatlyextendedbyprovidingsufficientventilationto
preventthebuild-upofhighinternaltemperaturesthat
causedeteriorationofcomponentparts.Withadequate
ventilation,theinstrumentcanbemountedinanyposi-
tion.Whennotinstalledina cabinet,theplasticfeet
mustnotberemovedsothatadequateairflowispro-
videdthroughthebottomofthechasis.Youshould
allowenoughclearancesothatcoolaircanenteratthe
bottomofthecabinetandbeventedfromthetop.The
recommendedminimumspaceforinstallationis15in-
ches(38.1cm)deep,17inches(43.2cm)wide,and6
inches(15.2cm)high.
Toinstalltheinstrumentina Mclntoshcabinet,follow
theinstructionsthatareenclosedwiththecabinet.For
anyothertypeofinstallationfollowtheseinstructions:
1.UnpackfromCarton
OpenthecartonandremovethePANLOCbrackets,
hardwarepackage,andmountingtemplate.Removethe
unitfromitsplasticbagandplaceitupsidedownon
theshippingpallet,thenunscrewthefourplasticfeet
fromthebottomofthechassis.
2.MarktheCabinetPanel.
Placethemountingtemplateinpositiononthecabinet
panelwheretheinstrumentistobeinstalled,andtape
itinplace.Thebrokenlinesthatrepresenttheoutline
oftherectangularcutoutalsorepresenttheoutside
dimensionsofthechassis.Makesuretheselinesclear
shelves,partitions,oranyequipment.Withthetemplate
inplace,firstmarkthesixA andB holesandthefour
smallholesthatlocatethecornersofthecutout.Then,
jointhefourcornermarkingswithpencillines,using
theedgeofthetemplateasa straightedge.
3.DrillHoles
Usea drillwitha 3/16inch(5mm)bitheldperpen-
diculartothepanelanddrillthesixA andB holes.
Then,usinga drillbitslightlylargerthanthetipofyour
sawblade,drilloneholeateachoftwodiagonallyop-
positecorners.Theholesshouldbarelytouchtheinside
edgeofthepenciledoutline.Beforetakingthenext
step,makesurethatthesixA andB holeshavebeen
drilled.
4.SawthePanelCutout
Saw,carefully,ontheinsideofthepenciledlines.First
makethetwolongcutsandthenthetwoshortcuts.
Aftertherectangularopeninghasbeencutout,usea
filetosquarethecornersandsmoothanyirregularities
inthecutedges.
5.InstalltheMountingStrips
Inthehardwarepackageyouwillfindtwomounting
strips,andtwosetsofmachinescrews.Forpanelsthat
arelessthan1/2inch(12.7mm)thick,usethe3/4inch
(19.1mm)screws;forpanelsthataremorethan1/2
inch(12.7mm)thick,usethe1-1/4inch(31.8mm)
screws.
Startingattheright-handsideofthepanel,inserta
screwoftheproperlengthintothecenterholeinthe
panel,markedB onthetemplate.Onthebackofthe
panel,aligna mountingstripwiththeholesinthepanel
andtightenthescrewuntilthescrewheadispulledinto
thewood.
Repeatthisproceduretoattachthemountingstripto
theleftsideofthepanel.

6.AttachthePANLOCBrackets
UsingtwoscrewsoftheproperlengthintheA holeson
eachside,attachthePANLOCbracketstothecabinet
panel;theshortflangeismountedagainstthefront
(face)ofthecabinetpanel.Thescrewspassthroughthe
PANLOCbracketflange,thecabinetpanel,andthen
throughthemountingstripspreviouslymounted.
7.InstalltheInstrument
GuidetheACpowercordthroughthepanelopeningto
thebackofthecabinet;then,slidetheinstrumentinto
theopeningcarefullysothattherailsonthebottomof
eachsideofthechassisengagethetracksonthe
mountingbrackets.Continuetoslidetheinstrumentin-
tothecabinetuntilitisstoppedbytheadjustposition
latches.Pressthelatchesinward,thispermitstheinstru-
menttoslideintothecabinetuntilitsfrontpanelis
flushwiththecabinetpanel.TurnthePANLOCbuttons
atthelowerleftandrightcornersoftheinstrument
panelclockwisetolocktheunitfirmlyinthecabinet.
TurnthePANLOCbuttonscounterclockwisetounlock
theinstrument.Itcanthenslideoutwardtopermitthe
removaloftheinstrumentfromthecabinet.

ThebackpaneloftheMR7082hasconnectorslabel-
edAUDIOOUTPUT,infraredREMOTECONTROL,AM
antenna,75OHMFMantenna,andACpowerusedto
interconnectwithassociatedequipmentandtheAC
powerline.Useshieldedcablestoconnecttheoutput
signaltoa preamplifierorpoweramplifier.Tominimize
thepossibilityofhum,theshieldedcablesshouldbeof
parallelconstructionorlooselytwistedtogetherand
locatedawayfromthespeakerconnectingcablesand
ACpowercords.Becertaintousegoodqualityshield-
edcablesforallinterconnections.Yourdealercanad-
viseyouonthekindandlengthofcablesthatwillbest
suityourinstallation.
1.AUDIOOUTPUT
UsetheAUDIOOUTPUTjacksontherearpanel
tofeedprogramtoa stereocontrolpreamplifieror
otherequipmentwhichhasitsownvolumecontrol.
Theoutputlevelisa nominal1 voltfor100%FM
modulation.Thelowoutputimpedancepermits
longaudiocablestobeusedwithouta lossofhigh
frequenciesduetocablecapacity.
2.REMOTECONTROL
TheREMOTECONTROLconnectorisdesigned
forusewiththeMclntoshinfraredremotecontrol
systems.Withthesesystems,youcan,froma hand-
heldremotecontrol,turnonthetunerandthe
system,selectfromsevenpreprogrammedstations
oneitherFMorAM,searchsequentiallythepro-
grammedstationsonFMorAMandscantheentire
FMorAMband.
3.AMANTenna
TheAMantennainputontheMR7082isunusual
inthatitwillacceptalmostanytypeofantenna.
Ina locationofmoderatesignalstrengthandlittle
interference(fewflourescentlights,motors,TV
sets,etc.),a pieceofwireasshortas3 feetwill
givegoodperformance.Ina ruralarea,anoutdoor
longwiremightbedesirable.Thebestoverall
performancewillbeobtainedbyusinga shielded
loopantenna.
Ashieldedloopantennaismadefroma lengthof
singleconductorshieldedwire;microphonecable,
coaxialcable,etc.,arrangedina singleloop.For
bestreception,orienttheloopvertically.Itmaybe
attachedaroundtheframeofa windowbehinda
curtain,onthebackoftheequipmentcabinet,orin
somesimilarway,Signalstrengthisproportionalto
thesizeoftheloop;thelargertheloop,thegreater
thereceivedsignal.
Toprepareanantennafromtheshieldedcable,
strip3/4ofaninchofouterinsulationfromeachof
thecableends.Fromoneend,completelyremove
theexposed3/4"ofmeshshielding.Thenremove3/8
ofaninchofinsulationfromthecenterconductor.
InserttheexposedcenterconductorintotheAM
ANTpushconnector.Makesurethecutoffmesh
shielddoesnotcomeincontactwithanything.On
theotherend,leavethemeshshieldintactandstrip
%ofaninchofinsulationfromthecenterconduc-
tor.Onthisendonly,twisttheexposedcentercon-
ductorandthemeshshieldtogether.
Insertthetwistedshieldandcenterconductorinto
theground(GND)pushconnector.
4.FMANTenna
Theantennainputimpedanceis75ohmsdesign-
edtobefedbycoaxialantennacable.Theinput
connectorisa "TypeF"whichmateswithcable
companyfeedlinesandcoaxialcable.Interference
rejectionandlowsignallossareamongthebenefits
ofcoaxialcable.
AnyoneoffourdifferentFMantennasystemscan
beusedwithyourMR7082.1)anoutdoorFM
antenna,2)anall-channel(UHF-VHF-FM)antenna,
3)a cableinputfromyourlocalcablecompany,or
4)theindoordipolesupplied.
A75-ohmoutdoorantennadesignedforFM
receptionisrecommendedforoptimumperform-
anceinallareas.Infringeareas,bestresultswillbe
obtainedwitha highlydirectionalFMantennaused
witha rotator.Adjustthepositionoftheantenna
until thebestreceptionisobtained.
A75-ohmmatcheddipoleantennasuppliedwith
yourMR7082maybeusedinurbanorinhigh
signalstrength
areas.
The
flexibility
ofthe
thin
wire
assemblypermitsittobeplacedundera rug,
tackedbehindthestereo,orplacedinanyother
convenientlocation.Insomecases,itmaybe
necessarytopositiontheantennaforbestsignal
reception.Avoidlocatingthisantennanexttoother
wiresormetalobjects.Anindoorantennamaynot

proveeffectiveinhouseshavingmetalsidingor
metalinsulation.
Althougha 75-ohmcoaxialfeedlineoffersthebest
noiseandmultipathrejection,manyantennasuse
300-ohmtwinlead.Inthiscase,usea matching
transformer(balum)toconverta 300-ohmantenna
tothe75-ohminputimpedanceofthetuner.
5.ACPOWER
PlugtheACpowercordintoa 120volt50/60Hz
walloutlet.Theplugbladesarepolarizedsobecer-
taintheplugisfullyinsertedintheoutlettoprevent
bladeexposure.

perweek,willmaintainthebatteriesina fullycharged
state.Whenfullycharged,thebatterieswillprovidethe
energytoretaintheprogrammedinstructionsformore
thansixmonthswiththetunerturnedoff.Batterylifeis
dependentonusage,storage,temperature,andtime.

TheSIGNALindicatorisattherightofthestation
displayarea.ThehorizontalrowoffiveLEDbarin-
dicators,showstherelativestrengthofanFMor
AMstationbeingreceived.Thegreaterthenumber
ofbarsilluminated,thegreaterthereceived
station'ssignalstrength.

ThreeLED's, twohorizontalarrowsanda
centerdot,locatedabovetheSIGNALindicator,
makeuptheTUNINGindicator.A stationis
preciselycenterchanneltunedwhenthecenterdot
LED,only,illuminates.
TheexclusiveMclntoshdevelopedAutomaticFre-
quencyLock(AFL)circuitmakesprecisetuning
almostautomatic.BecausetheAFLcircuitlocksto
andpreventsanydeparturefromtheprecisecenter
ofthestation,itmustbeturnedoffforSCAN,
SEARCH,orMANUALtuning.Whenusingthese
tuningmethodsonFM,theAFLcircuitisturnedoff
untilthecentertuningdotlightsandthehorizontal
arrowsareoff.ThentheAFLcircuitlocksprecisely
tothebroadcaststationfrequencypreventingany
detuningordrift.ThelockingactionoftheAFLcir-
cuitmakestuningeasy.AFLturnoffandonoccurs
automaticallywhenintheSCANmodeorwhenus-
ingthepresettouchbuttonsforstationselections.
MclntoshAFLwillgivethebestFMandAMrecep-
tionwithlowestbackgroundnoise,lowestdistor-
tion,andhighestFMstereochannelseparation.
Whentuningmanually,thetunercanbetuned
slightlyoffthestation'sfrequencywithoutdegrading
theprogrammaterial.This"near"tuningcancause
thestationtobe'lost'whenpoweristurnedoffand
thenturnedonagain.Youcanpreventthisby
alwaysrotatingtheMANUALtuningknobuntilonly
thecentertuningdotislighted.
AllFMstereobroadcastswillcausetheFMMPX
barindicatortoilluminate.Itislocatedtotheleftof
theSIGNALandTUNINGindicators.

The3/4"highLEDdigitaldisplayofstationfrequen-
cyonbothFMandAMprovidesa highdegreeofac-
curacyandiseasytoread.Inmanyreceivers,only

systemrebroadcastsorintheeventofstationinac-

TUNINGSYSTEM
Fromtoday'sFMelectronictuningsystems
MclntoshhasselectedthevoltageSynthesizer,a
SignalLockedLoop(SLL)Systemwhichlocksthe
MR7082totheincomingsignaloftheFMstation.
Withthetunertunedtothestationfrequencyand
correctionvoltagebeinggeneratedbythedetector
"zero"crossings,allpartsofthetuner,mixer,local
oscillator,IF,etc.areinsidethetuningloopandac-
curatetuningisassured.Aslongasthestation
transmitswithinthetuningrangeoftheMR7082,
regardlessoffrequency,theSLLsystemwilllockon
thestation'stransmittedfrequencyandremain
centerchanneltuned.
ThesuperiorityoftheSignalLockedLoopSystem
madeittheobviouschoiceforthedemanding
performancerequiredoftheMR7082.
ThreemodesoftuningtheMR7082areprovided:
MANUAL,SCAN,andsevenprogrammable
touch-buttons.
IntheMANUALmode,a regulatedtemperature
compensatedreferencevoltageisfedtothetuning
potentiometer.A portionofthisvoltage,asselected
bythepositionofthepotentiometer,isfedtothe
controllerintegratedcircuit(IC).Itisthenamplified,
filtered,andappliedtothetuningvaractors.Proper
tuningisalwaysguaranteedsincetheoutputofthe
FMdetectoratzerocrossingisreferencedto4.75
voltsandisfedtotheS curveinputofthecontroller
througha DCamplifier.Ifa deviationfromthe4.75
voltsiscausedbya shiftintuningorstationdrift,
thecontrollergeneratesa correctionvoltageand
combinesitwiththevoltagebeingfedtothetuning
varactorstomaintainpropertuning.
IntheSCANmode,a DCramptuningvoltageis
generated,risinginvoltageforSCANup,decaying
forSCANdown.Therampcontinuesuntilthezero
crossingofthedetectorS curveissensedatthein-
putofthecontroller.Thetuningvoltagerampstops
andisthenmaintainedwithanynecessarycorrection
voltageadded.
WhileinSCAN,anoutputfromthecontrolleris
usedtolowerthetunersensitivitytopreventweak,
noisystationsfrombeingheard.
Thetuningvoltagepresentattheoutputofthe
controllermaybestoredinanyofthesevenpro-
grammabletouch-buttonsatanytime.Pressingthe
ENTERbuttoncausesananalog-to-digitalconversion
ofthetuningvoltagetotakeplace.Thedigitized
dataisinsertedintothecontrolmemorywhenthe
ENTERbuttonispressedandpressinganyoneofthe
sevennumberedbuttons.
Atouchonanynumberedtouch-buttonwillinstan-
taneouslyrecallthestationfromthedigitalmemory.
Thetuningvoltageretainedintheelectronicmemory
isdeliveredtotheoutputofthecontroller.Toinsure
propertuning,a searchandfetchoperationtakes
place.Thetuningvoltageismovedplusandminus
itsnominalvalueinincreasingstepsuntilthecorrect
stationzerocrossingsignalisreceivedfromthe
detector.Thestationfrequencyisthencapturedand
onceagainthetuningvoltageismaintainedwithany
necessarycorrectionadded.Eachtimeoneofthe
seventouch-buttonsispressed,a mutedpulsesup-
pressesanynoisethatmayoccurduringthetuning
process.
Anautomaticallyrechargedlonglifenickelcad-
miumbatteryprovidesthenecessaryvoltagetothe
controlmemorytoretainitsinstructionswhenAC
powertothetuneristurnedoff.Thestereoormono
modeandthestationfrequencylastusedbefore
turn-offareretainedinthememory.Whenthe
poweristurnedon,thetunerwillautomatically
returntothemodeandfrequencylastused.

beatnoteinterferencewiththebiasoscillatorina
taperecorder.Thisfilterisdrivenfroma filterbuffer

putandoutputimpedancesforproperphase

DISPLAYFREQUENCY
Thestationdisplayisfedfroma frequencycounter
whichconsistsoftwoIC's.OneisanEmitterCoupl-
edLogic(ECL)buffercircuitand"divideby100"
prescaler.Theotherisa C-MOSLSIICthatcontains
thereferenceoscillator,variousdividers,latches,and
LEDsegmentdriversforthedisplay.TheLEDdisplay
isstaticnotmultiplexedwhichpreventsREin-
terference.AnadjustableIFoffsetisprovidedsothat
thedisplayreadsthetunedfrequencyaccuratelyfor
thefullspanofIFfiltertolerance.

TheunusualdesignoftheAMREinputsection
makeseffectiveuseofalmostanytypeofan
antenna.
Thefirstelementintheinputsectionisanuntun-
edbandpassfilter.ItpassesalltheAMstationsand
rejects
any
signalsoutside
theAM

Transistorcascodeamplifierfollows.Thisamplifier,
with
its
JFET
input
stage,providesexcellentsensitivi-
tyandsuperiorspuriousresponserejection.Ithasa

Twovaractortunedcircuits,a secondRFamplifier,

piezoelectric4-elementlatticefilter.Thenthere

finallythesignalissplittofeedtheAMdetectorand

mutingcircuits.
TheAMlimiterdrivesa 455kHzRatioDetectorto
derivethezerocrossingsignalforthecontroller.

The+15and+5voltsuppliesuseICthreeter-
minalregulatorswhilethe+33voltsupplyusesa
