DETERMINING THE BEST HEIGHT FOR YOUR OVEN STAND
One of the most commonly asked questions that we receive from people building a Wood Fired Oven
at home is “How high should I make the stand?” It’s a good question to ask – if you build the stand
too high the shorter members of your family will find it hard to reach into the oven to get to oven
trays and the like. If you build it too low, you’ll find yourself stooping constantly to look into the oven,
to check on the crust of your pizza, or see how that roast is coming along.
Remember, the most important consideration for setting the oven stand height is LINE OF SIGHT.
You’ll spend much more time looking into the oven to check on your food than you will using oven
tools, so you want to be able to look in from a comfortable standing position.
For the purpose of this guide, we have assumed that you’ll be standing approximately 2’ from the
front of the oven stand. Please note that we have removed the granite landing from the drawings to
avoid any confusion, which is why the oven is set back from the front of the stand.
We suggest you build the oven at one of three possible heights; 36”, 40” or 44” from ground level.
We say this because if you build with 8” high concrete blocks, and pour a 4.75” suspended slab (as
we recommend in our instructions on How To Build an Oven Stand) then it’s fairly easy to build to
these heights. Note that 8” concrete cinder blocks are typically slightly less than the full 8” which is
why 4 Blocks + 4.75” of concrete can add up to 36”.
36” Stand Height: 4No. 8” blocks + 4.75” Suspended Slab
40” Stand Height: 4 and a Half 8” blocks + 4.75” Suspended Slab
44” Stand Height: 5 No. 8” blocks + 4.75” Suspended Slab
To best illustrate the line of sight, we have made three CAD models for each Stand Height;
for a 5’4” user, for a 5’9” user and lastly for a 6’3” user, to show the impact that your height will have
on your ability to see into the oven.
