Chapter 1. Overview
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The EVB-LAN9370 Evaluation Board is a daughter board that interfaces with the
SAMA5D3-Ethernet Development System Board (Part Number: DM320114) running
Linux®.
This user’s guide is a companion document to the 5-Port AVB/TSN Gigabit Ethernet
Switch with Integrated 100Base-T1 PHYs Product Brief and the EVB-LAN9370 Evalu-
ation Board Schematics, explaining the specific implementation provided on the eval-
uation board.
The EVB-LAN9370 contains Microchip’s 5-port LAN9370 switch featuring four
IEEE100Base-T1 ports with two-wire screw-down terminal blocks and 1 RGMII port.
For this board, the RGMII port is configured to operate in RMII mode. The board
receives its power from the 3.3V supplied by the SAM board and contains the Microchip
MIC33153 Power Management module to create the 1.1v power needed locally.
Power, RMII, SPI, and MDIO for board-to-board interfaces are through a 24-pin dual
SIP connector.

Chapter 2. Getting Started
2.1 INTRODUCTION
This section describes the steps to configure the SAMA5D3-EDS platform with the
EVB-LAN9370 daughter board.
2.2 SETTING UP THE HARDWARE
Perform the following steps when setting up the SAMA5D3-EDS and the
EVB-LAN9370 daughter board:
1. With power off, remove any daughter boards and review the jumper settings of
the SAMA5D3 board.
a) J25 should have a jumper installed (SPI Flash Enable).
b) J20 (NAND Flash Enable) should have a jumper installed.
c) No other jumpers need to be installed.
2. Connect an FTDI USB-to-UART cable to J10 to provide console IO using a ter-
minal emulation utility, such as TeraTerm. The settings are 115200:N:8:1 with no
flow control. Note that this is a 3.3V interface. See Figure 2-1.
3. Review the jumper settings on the EVB-LAN9370 board.
a) Install jumper at J1 (VBAT-VDD).
b) Install jumpers at J10 and J12 for proper LED operation.
4. Attach the EVB-LAN9370 board to the SAMA5D3 board via the RMII I/F connec-
tor as shown in Figure 2-1.
5. Connect the 100BASE-T1 cables to the EVB-LAN9370 screw-down terminals as
desired.
6. Connect the USB cable between a PC and the J12 USB connector on the
SAMA5D3 board. This will be used for loading an image into the board’s flash
memory.
7. Connect a 12 VDC supply at the barrel jack (J1) of the SAMA5D5 board, and turn
the power switch to ON position.
At this point, several green LEDs should light up, indicating that the board is powered
up. The D2 and D3 of the SAMA5D3 board should light up, indicating 3.3V and 5V are
up.
With a terminal session open to the FTDI COM port, press the Reset button located on
the SAMA5D3 board near the USB and SDCard connectors. The Uboot and Linux®
console IO should be visible. The images are shipped to allow the user to log in as root
with no password.
Note: The SAMA5D3-EDS board order part number DM320114 is required.
Note: Take note of the polarity. (Auto-polarity is disabled by default.)

2.3 SETTING UP THE SOFTWARE
The source code for this Linux evaluation board platform can be found on Github
(https://github.com/microchip-ung/lan937x_linux) along with documents describing the
build process. Pre-built images are available under the Releases section along with
instructions on loading the image onto the Ethernet Development System
(SAMA5D3-EDS board). The source code build process uses the Buildroot environ-
ment. The kernel being used is a recent net-next version. Ubuntu 18.04 is a known suit-
able OS platform for building the source.
Users must note that currently, the configuration of the T1 port’s PHY clocking mode
(Master/Slave) is not programmable. As such, two pre-built images are available. One
has all ports configured as T1 clocking master and the other has all ports configured as
T1 clocking slave. The PHY clocking mode does not auto-negotiate. It must be config-
ured properly for the link to come up. The Microchip EVB-LAN8770_MC is a
100Base-T1 to 100Base-TX adapter (EV02N47A Media Converter). The board pro-
vides a jumper to configure the T1 PHY to either Master or Slave mode.
2.4 PORT NUMBERING
Remember that the port numbering of the EVB-LAN9370 does not flow linearly along
the edge of the board. (See Figure 2-2.) Read the silkscreen in carefully to note the port
numbers.

By default, the 100BASE-T1 ports are configured as clock provider. See
Section 2.5 “Useful Commands” to change a port’s configuration between clock
driver and clock receiver.
There are per-port LEDs (green) that will light when the external 100Base-T1 wiring is
connected.
2.5 USEFUL COMMANDS
From the Linux command line, the following standard Linux commands are available
for viewing or configuring the network:
ifconfig / brctl / ip / bridge /
ethtool / ping / tc
Use ip -c link show to see what interfaces are available. The default image pro-
vides four lan ports (lan1-4) in a bridge (br0).
Enter the following commands to familiarize designers with the evaluation board envi-
ronment:
ls /sys/class/net/
ip -c link
ethtool lan1
ethtool -S lan1
bridge -color vlan
bridge -color fdb
brctl show
brctl showmacs br0
ifconfig
arp-scan -l -v -I br0
Some of the board’s configuration settings can be controlled via Uboot environment
variables. Below are some examples of Uboot environment variables:
•ethaddr = Provides the MAC address for the board
•ipaddr = Provides the IP address the board will use
2.5.1 IP Command
The IP command makes up the major part of the iproute2 commands. It is used to dis-
play and configure many different things.
•ip help = Provides the general user syntax for the IP command
•ip link help = Provides link command-specific command usage guidance
•ip -c link show = Displays all of the network devices
• ip link set dev lan4 down = Sets the lan4 device to a "Link Down" state
•ip address help = Shows the command usage for this command. It is used
primarily to add or delete interface addresses.
•ip addr add dev lan4 192.168.4.104/24 broadcast
192.168.4.255 = Adds the IP address, subnet, and broadcast addresses to
lan4
These commands are very powerful and can set many parameters within a single com-
mand.

2.5.2 Ethtool Command
The ethtool command is used to display aspects related to the PHY.
•ethtool -h = Displays the command usage
•ethtool lan1 = Displays the PHY settings for lan1
•ethtool -S lan1 = Displays the port statistics for lan1
If you are working with an early release of the driver, these commands may not yet be
supported. They were added in v5.10 of ethtool and were not supported in the initial
driver release. They are used to set the T1 PHY clocking mode for the specified port.
• ethtool -s lan1 master-slave forced-master
• ethtool -s lan1 master-slave forced-slave
2.5.3 Bridge Command
•bridge = Displays the command usage
•bridge link help = Displays the command usage for setting properties of a
bridge device
•bridge vlan help = Displays the command usage for configuring vlans.
•bridge fdb help = Displays the command usage for interacting with the for-
warding database. This allows users to display the fdb or set static entries into the
fdb.
• bridge vlan add dev lan3 vid 20 untagged = Allows vlan traffic with a
vid of 20 on port lan3 and will untag the traffic on egress
• bridge –color vlan show = Shows all of the vlan settings on all devices.
2.5.4 Brctl Command
This is an older bridge control command that still has some uses. Much of the capabil-
ities in brctl are now covered in various IProute2 commands (IP or bridge), but the brctl
commands are still supported on Linux®.
•brctl = Displays the command usage

2.5.5 Ifconfig Command
Linux still supports the ifconfig command but recommends moving to the ip command
set as it is more powerful and current.
2.5.6 Arp-scan Command
This command needs to be included in the kernel .config file for it to be included in
the package. It is not part of the basic kernel command set buildroot uses. Add
"BR2_PACKAGE_ARP_SCAN=Y" to the defconfig file located in
./buildroot-at91/configs file prior to building the kernel.
arp-scan -l -I br0 will send out arp requests and display the IP and MAC
addresses of any devices connected to the evaluation board. This is a quick way of ver-
ifying that the network devices are properly connected to the evaluation board.
Use the IP address to ping the attached devices. Use the ip neighbor show com-
mand (formally known as the arp command) to display the ip address table. The com-
mand, bridge fdb show, will display what port the device is connected to.

2.6 DEFAULT NETWORK CONFIGURATION
The usual configuration shipped on an evaluation board will have all of the ports labeled
lan1 to lan4 and all ports placed into a bridge br0. The bridge is assigned an IP address.
All host processor traffic goes through the bridge. (Recall eth0 is now the dedicated
DSA port and not available for direct use by the user.)
Use the following commands to display the current network configuration:
1. ip -c link
2. ip -c -4 addr show
2.7 CONFIGURING VLANS
By default, the LAN937x ports under Linux are named lan1 to lan4 and are all placed
in a bridge br0. All ports are considered to be in the default VLAN id 1 as untagged. See
Figure 2-3.
However, bridge br0 is not VLAN-aware. To enable VLAN within the LAN937x, enter:
ip link set dev br0 type bridge vlan_filtering 1
The following commands show how a user can create a port-based VLAN with ports 1
and 2. This example uses VLAN10.

As shown in Figure 2-4, "PVID" tells the switch that untagged traffic coming in on this
port will be tagged by the switch with that associated vid. "Untagged" tells the switch
that any outgoing (Egress) packets for this vid should have the vlan tag removed before
it is sent out.
Ports lan1 and lan2 are now members of VLAN10. They are not members of any other
VLAN, so they will not receive traffic tagged with any other VLAN.
As another example, designers may allow some vlan traffic to pass on Ports lan3 and
lan4 using the following commands:
# configure VLAN20
bridge vlan add vid 20 dev lan3
bridge vlan add vid 21 dev lan3
bridge vlan add vid 22 dev lan3
bridge vlan add vid 20 dev lan4
bridge -color vlan show
Now, traffic tagged for vlan 20, 21, and 22 is allowed to flow though lan3, and tagged
traffic for vlan 20 is allowed to flow though lan4. Note that incoming untagged traffic is
still assigned to vlan 1 and outbound vlan 1 traffic is still flowing out these ports.
# delete untagged vlan1 traffic
bridge vlan del vid 1 dev lan3
bridge vlan del vid 1 dev lan4
Now, lan3 and lan4 will not use vlan ID 1 for untagged traffic.

2.8 DEBUG ACCESS TO THE DEVICE
The EVB platform includes a method that allows users to access the registers within
the LAN9370 device over the SPI bus. With this method, users can read and write reg-
isters to verify device configuration and settings. Note that this is only for debugging as
all hardware device accesses should be done through the device driver.
The following sequence shows the mounting of the kernel debug file system as well as
writes and reads of the device over SPI. This particular example is an indirect read of
a VLAN table entry.

Chapter 3. Hardware Configuration
3.1 INTRODUCTION
Figure 3-1 shows the top view of the EVB-LAN9370 evaluation board. The
100BASE-T1 ports connect to the screw terminals on the top of the board.
By default, the 100BASE-T1 ports are configured as clock-master. See
Section 2.5 “Useful Commands” to change between clock-master and clock-slave.

Note: 100BASE-T1 links must always be statically configured with one end as
clock driver and the other end as clock receiver. If both ends are the same
type, the connection will not work.
