Features of MSG703
The fast switching of 0.5μs at frequency (however,
1.5ms at 10N-3(MHz)(N: integer) point) and 200μs
at level is possible. For command and external trig-
ger receiving, both are 1.5ms (however, 3ms at
frequency 10N-3(MHz)(N: integer) point).
2Fast switching
MSG703 ensures the high accurate RF output level
by ALC circuit (Auto Level Control circuit).
3ALC function
The frequency can be set at maximum 11 digits in
0.1Hz resolution. The accuracy of level is ± 0.6dB
(excluding 625 to 725MHz) in "ALC on".
4
High accurate frequency and level output
Since frequency and level can be set by using ten
key, rotary encoder and arrow key, the operability
will increase dramatically.
5
Frequency and level setting by three ways
The IQ modulated
signal is output by
inputting such IQ
signal as analog, digi-
tal or list data(USB
flash drive and
manual) in IQ modu-
lator (option) from the
outside.

Highly stable reference frequency source with temperature stability of
<±0.2ppm @ 0 to 50°C and aging rate of <±0.5ppm/year is installed.
Furthermore, "High stability timebase MSG700-03" (option) is ready for
meeting the demands of more stable reference frequency source.
Phase offset function
MSG703 is equipped with the reference frequency input (REF IN) and
output (REF OUT). By using these two terminals and the phase offset
function, the phase of the output signals of two MSG703 can be synchro-
nized. However, it is necessary that the two units have the same
frequency. Also if the frequency is changed (even if both units are the
same frequency), the phase offset should be set again because the
phase will be shifted.

Types of sweep
There are two types of sweep methods.
(1) List sweep
The sweep by arbitrary values of the frequency and level is operable in
list sweep.
It's possible to do the input and editing of the frequency and level in the
following edit screen.
The number of sweep points can be set in the range from 1 to 2,048
points. The sweep rate of level is in the range from 500μs to 10s/point.
Also, for “frequency sweep” and “level+frequency sweep”, it is 600μs to
10s/point.
However, in the case of logarithmic steps (frequency only), the maximum
rate is 2ms/point. At 10N-3(MHz) (N: integer) point, the sweep rate
changes to 3ms/point maximum. For example, if the number of sweep
points is 80 points, the sweep rate is 800μs/point, and 10N-3(MHz) point
is 1 point, the time for one sweep is 66.2ms.
Level setting screen
Reverse power protection
When an excessive power is supplied to the output terminal RF OUT, the
reverse power protection function works to prevent damage to the equip-
ment. MSG703's specification of the protection power is "+ 30dBm
(CW average power), 50VDC". The situations where excessive input is
supplied will be considered as follows.
ALC function
MSG703 ensures the high accurate RF output level by ALC circuit (Auto
Level Control circuit).
The feedback loop works to become the level set in this circuit.
Indication of maximum output level
The maximum output level corresponding to the frequency is displayed
on the screen.
P1dB (typical value) when ALC is off and the maximum setting level
when ALC is on are displayed.

(2)Step sweep
The frequency or level is swept from the start until the stop by specified
step.
The number of sweep points can be set in the range from 2 to 65,536.
The sweep rate is the same as list sweep.
In addition, the linear sweep or logarithm sweep can be selected at step
sweep.

It's possible to output the three modulation signals of FSK, PSK and AM.
The modulation signal source is equipped in this equipment. Valid only in
"ALC off”.
Modulation function
(1) FSK modulation
In FSK modulation, the frequency shift amount can be set in the range
from 0 to ± 500kHz at 1Hz resolution. The carrier frequency is set in the
center of the shift using the FREQ key.
FSK modulation waveform which is set is displayed in frequency vs. time
on the screen.

(2) PSK modulation
In PSK modulation, the phase shift amount can be set in the range from 0
to ± 180 degree by 0.1 degree resolution.
The carrier frequency is set using the FREQ key.
Moreover, PSK modulation waveform which is set is displayed in phase vs.
time on the screen.
Time
Phase
(3) AM(Amplitude Modulation)
The modulation frequency can be set in the range from 100Hz to 5kHz at
100Hz step. The modulation waveform is a sine wave. The modulation
depth can be set at 1% step from 0 to 99%.
In addition, it's valid only in "ALC off" and "FREE RUN" (in other words,
burst control is not allowed).
The AM waveform which is set is displayed in amplitude vs. time on the
screen.

FSK/PSK data mode
There are register mode and direct mode. These modes are valid only in
FSK and PSK.
(1) Register mode
The data transmission rate in this mode is so fast as 1MHz maximum in
comparison with 20kHz in direct mode.
The shift amount of frequency or phase written previously in eight regis-
ters are read out by modulation signal.
The modulation signal is stored in the modulation signal memory in
which the register numbers are written, and these are read out at the
specified transmission rate.
Modulation signal source can be selected among PN9, PN15 and list.

[Example] Modulation by two levels
As shown in Fig.1, the modulation by two levels (frequency : F0/F1, phase:
P0/P1) is possible.
However, in case of a rectangular wave, the spectrum will spread as
shown in Fig.2.
Therefore, if generating the filtered waveform using several registers as
shown in Fig.3, the spread of spectrum will be prevented as shown in
Fig.4.

The modulation function and sweep function can be used
simultaneously. Therefore, it's possible to output a frequency hopping
signal. For frequency hopping, the hopping frequency is set with the
sweep function and the modulation signal is set with the modulation
function.
The figure below shows an example where the hopping frequency
interval is 2MHz and the modulation signal is FSK.

(2) Direct mode
The shift amount of the frequency or phase stored in the modulation
signal memory is read out at the specified transmission rate. The trans-
mission rate can be set in the range from 100Hz to 20kHz at 100Hz step.
Compared with register mode, the transmission rate is slower, but the
arbitrary signal can be output.

Option
I and Q are each 10 bit × 8,192 word maximum. The readout rate can be
set in the range from 100Hz to 40MHz at 100Hz step.
Since IQ data stored in a USB flash drive can be used, this is the easiest
way to generate a vector modulation signal.

3 types of IQ inputs
(1) Analog input
The modulation wave is generated by the
voltage supplied to I and Q inputs.
The full scale voltage is ± 600mV.
The input is DC coupling, single-ended
and 50Ω. The baseband bandwidth is
10MHz maximum (RF bandwidth 20MHz).
The burst control can be also performed
by the signal input to TRIG IN connector
on the front panel.
(2) Digital input
Using optional "50P twisted pair cable
MSG700-04”, the IQ data are input.
The number of bits is 10 bits in each of I
and Q, and the data format is two's
complement. The data rate is 80MSPS
maximum and the bandwidth is 10MHz
maximum. The synchronous clock should
be input at the same time.
The input format conforms to TIA/EIA-644
(LVDS) standard.
The burst control can be performed the
same as analog input. In this case, "CAR-
RIER ON" signal should be supplied to the
digital input connector.

Modulation
Modulation signal source Internal
Register mode, Direct mode
FSK/PSK data mode
Register mode The shift amount of frequency or phase
written previously in eight registers (register
0 to 7) are read out by the internal modula-
tion signal. Internal modulation signal is
stored in the modulation signal memory
(storing register number), and is read out at
the specified rate. Allows high-speed trans-
mission.
Kinds of modulation FSK modulation, PSK modulation, Ampli-
tude modulation(AM)
Direct mode The shift amount of frequency or phase
stored in modulation signal memory is
sequentially read out at specified rate.
Transmission rate 100Hz to 1MHz/point @ register mode
100Hz to 20kHz/point @ direct mode
100Hz/point
Setting resolution
Internal modulation signal source
The modulation signal is stored in modula-
tion signal memory. At register mode, the
register numbers are stored, and at direct
mode, the frequency values or phase
values are stored.
