Preface
All Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA) Ltd. contamination monitors are based on
similar detectors, sensors, counting and control electronics and computer hardware.
Most changes in the modular hardware have evolved from technological
enhancements, which were then incorporated into all newly manufactured monitors.
In addition, the software, which controls the operation of the unit and the built-in
diagnostics, is similar on all models. As a result, much of the Installation and
Maintenance information andthe procedures for Setup, Operation, Calibration and
Diagnostics provided in this manual apply to several models similarly.
The software is adapted to reflect the actual configuration of each model, such as the
type, number and location of detectors and the applicable options. As a result, the
screens displayed on different models may differ slightly from those in this manual;
however, the procedures described apply to all units, except where noted.
•The intended use of Personnel Contamination Monitors is for contamination
monitoring for persons. Any other use is considered prohibited.
This manual describes the Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA) Ltd. Monitor
Software Version 9.00.1, including information on Setup, Operation and Calibration
as well as the extensive diagnostic and testing capability usingthe Test menus. The
software revision number is displayed onseveral screens, including the “READY”
and the “FAULTS” screens. The following typographic conventions are used
throughout this manual.
Names of Keys on the Keyboard
This manual shows the names of the keyboard keys as they usually appear on a
keyboard and are seen in capital letters (for example, ESC, ENTER, CTRL).
Key Sequences
If a comma ( , ) separates the names of the keys, this means they must be pressed in
sequence. For example, “Press ALT, SPACEBAR” means that you should press ALT
and release it, then press and release the SPACEBAR.
Key Combinations
A plus sign (+) between two key names means that these keys must be pressed at the
same time. For example, “Press ALT+ESC” means that you should press the ALT key
and hold it down while you press the ESC key.
Dialog Box Elements
Dialog Box Elements are shown in Bold type. Elements of a dialog box include:
check boxes, check boxes, combo boxes, drop down lists, group boxes, radio options,
tabs, text boxes, field names, etc. Note that the font is different from that used for
menu commands, soft keys, and buttons.

xii Gem-5 User’s Manual
Window Names, Menu Commands, Window Command Buttons, and Soft
Keys/Buttons
Menu items are shown in Special Bold type. Note that the font is different from that
used for dialog box elements.
Cascading items (such as menu steps and sub-steps) are separated by a space, a pipe
(|), and a second space, and in a special bold typeface, e.g., File | Save.
User Entries
Text you are expected to type in is shown in Courier New (monospaced style)
type.
File Names/Path Names
Names of files and directory path names are shown in Arial (C:\GENIE2K).
Titles
Titles of books and of manual chapters and section are shown in italics.
Each of its chapters covers specific functions and are divided into the following
arrangement:
Chapters
Chapter 1, Introduction, is an introduction to the product and an overview of the
product’s features. In addition, it provides selected safety information.
Chapter 2, Installation - First Use of System, includes information on how to
prepare the product upon receipt as well as a preliminary check-out (both basic
hardware and software setups are discussed).
Chapter 3, Principle of Operation, discusses the main modes of operation and Out
of Service descriptions.
Chapter 4, Unit Setup, provides information on the different types of plots
available for High Voltage (including Figure of Merit Optimization) and
Discrimination setup as well as calibration requirements and methodology.
Chapter 5, Parameters Definition, provides information on software parameters
including an extensive review of the majority of the software setup menus not
discussed in Chapter 4, Unit Setup, Chapter 6, Diagnostics/Maintenance or
Chapter 7, Retrieving Information.
Chapter 6, Diagnostics/Maintenance, gives help on maintaining the unit by
discussing the Test menus and how to handle Faults by troubleshooting.
Chapter 7, Retrieving Information, describes how to obtain useful information
and data from the monitor.

Gem-5 User’s Manual xiii

All Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA) Ltd. Contamination Monitors provide fast
sensitive monitoring. Due to modularity of components and extensive diagnostics,
direct reductions in consumable and workforce maintenance costs can be realized.
Modern appearance and reliable industrial embedded PC-based operation with better
tracking of contamination and faster, more thorough item throughput at boundary
points can further enhance a facility’s contamination control program.
In addition, these monitors use the same “fast following” background trending and
release-limit algorithms consistent with the Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA)
Ltd. Argos, Sirius and Cronos families providing the best possible performance in
stable or varying radiation fields.

Chapter 1 Introduction
2 Gem-5 User’s Manual
The very low detection threshold is optimized by the quantity and sensitivity of the
detectors, the thickness of the lead shielding and the measuring time, so that stringent
user requirements can be met.
The devices are rugged and reliable; and they are extremely easy to use, even for non-
specialists.
All Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA) Ltd. personnel monitors use industrial-
grade plug-in computers with internal solid-state drive, high-resolution color LCD
displays, and digitized sound for prompts and instructions. All computer
components are readily available through Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA) Ltd.,
simplifying repair and replacement of parts. For ease of setup, calibration and
maintenance, access to the installed computer is through a conveniently located
locked access door. Computer connections inside this access door include an on/off
switch, VGA port, serial port, Ethernet port and USB ports.1
The GEM-5 provides power plants and nuclear facilities the very latest gamma
detection capability to monitor pedestrians leaving areas of potential radioactive
contamination.
User friendly – no user interface required during normal operation.
Voice annunciator guides individuals through the monitoring process.
An audible alarm notifies individuals of contamination and a new larger easy to see
color LCD screen readily displays contaminated areas.
The monitor is designed to be operated in one of three different modes depending
upon the level of detection capability needed. These are:
1. Walkthrough (monitor determines MDA based on user settable parameters).
2. Pause-and-count (enter the monitor, wait for a user settable length of time, then
exit).
3. Two-step (stand facing the detectors for a short period (time user settable or
calculated by monitor), turn 180º and repeat count, and then exit).
The user interaction with the unit for contamination monitoring is intuitive and
uncomplicated. The underlying analysis and control software is both sophisticated
and flexible. The built-in data logging and diagnostic reporting capability along with
the integral comprehensive test routines are usually the only tools needed by the
service technician.

Safety First
Electrical Safety
Dangerous voltage levels are present inside the cabinet of the monitor. Service
personnel should exercise appropriate safety precautions around live electrical
circuits. This may include, but is not limited to, various power supplies enclosed
within the computer box and external to say box located on the roof or lower section
of utility panel etc. (like those connected to optional barriers or IP cameras).
WARNING:
Since there may or may not be an externally
accessible electrical switch or circuit breaker
device on this monitor, electrical isolation is
achieved by disconnecting the 3-prong IEC 320
power inlet connector if supplied (it would be
located on the roof) and/or by using the customer’s
branch circuit electrical breaker/lockout switch.
The monitor should also be disconnected from the
facility’s AC supply.
CAUTION: Mirion Technologies (Canberra CA) Ltd.
recommends that a safety ladder be used
every time access to any roof-mounted AC cords,
plugs and sockets is required
