Preparation
Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto
beused.Removeall rocks,bottles,cans,or otherforeign
objectswhichcouldbe pickedupor thrownandcause
personalinjuryor damageto the machine.
Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduringopera-
tionor whileperforminganadjustmentor repair,to protect
eyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancause serious
injurytothe eyes.
Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand close-fitting
slacksandshirts.Loosefittingclothesor jewelrycan be
caughtin movableparts.Neveroperatethis machine
in barefeet or sandals.Wearleatherworkgloveswhen
feedingmaterialin thechipperchute.
Beforestarting,checkallboltsand screwsfor propertight-
nessto besurethe machineisin safeworkingcondition.
Also,visuallyinspectmachineforanydamageatfrequent
intervals.
Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionslabels,as
necessary.
Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextreme
careinhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable
andthe vaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan
occurwhengasolineis spilledonyourselforyourclothes
whichcanignite.Washyourskinand changeclothes
immediately.

b. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andother
sourcesofignition.
c. Neverfuel machineindoors.
d. Neverremovegascap oradd fuelwhilethe engineis hot
or running.
e. Allowengineto coolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefuel-
ing.
f. Neveroverfillfueltank. Filltankto nomorethan1/2
inchbelowbottomoffiller neckto providespacefor fuel
expansion.
g. Replacegasolinecap andtightensecurely.
h. If gasolineis spilled,wipeitoff theengineandequip-
ment.Movemachinetoanotherarea.Wait5 minutes
beforestartingtheengine.
i. Neverstorethe machineorfuel containerinsidewhere
there isan openflame,spark,or pilotlight(e.g.furnace,
waterheater,spaceheater,clothesdryer,etc.).
j. Toreducea fire hazard,keepmachinefreeofgrass,
leaves,or otherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanupoilor fuel
spillageandremoveanyfuel soakeddebris.
k. Allowmachinetocoolat least5 minutesbeforestoring.

Operation
1. Donot puthandsandfeet nearrotatingpartsor in the
feedingchambersand dischargeopening.Contactwith the
rotatingimpellercanamputatefingers, hands,andfeet.
2. Beforestartingthe machine,makesurethe chipperchute,
feedintake,andcuttingchamberareemptyandfreeofall
debris.
3. Thoroughlyinspectall materialto beshreddedand remove
any metal,rocks,bottles,cans,orotherforeignobjects
whichcouldcausepersonalinjuryor damagetothe
machine.
4. Ifthe impellerstrikesa foreignobjector ifyourmachine
shouldstartmakinganunusualnoiseor vibration,
immediatelyshuttheengineoff.Allowthe impellertocome
to a completestop.Disconnectthe sparkplugwire,ground
itagainstthe engineandperformthe followingsteps:
a. Inspectfor damage.
b. Repairorreplaceanydamagedparts.
c. Checkforanyloosepartsandtightento assure
continuedsafeoperation.
5. Donotallow anaccumulationof processedmaterialtobuild
upinthe dischargearea.Thiscan preventproperdischarge
and resultin kickbackof materialthroughthefeed opening.
6. Donotattemptto shredorchipmateriallargerthan
specifiedonthe machineor inthis manual.Personalinjury
or machinedamagecouldresult.
7. Neverattemptto unclogeitherthe feedintakeordischarge
openingwhilethe engineisrunning.Shutthe engineoff,
wait untilall movingpartshavestopped,disconnectthe
sparkplugwireandgroundit againsttheenginebefore
clearingdebris.
8. Neveroperatewithoutvacuumbagand dischargechute
properlyattachedto the machine.Neveremptyor change
vacuumbagwhilethe engineisrunning.Zipperedend
of vacuumbag mustbekeptclosedatalltimes during
operation.
9. Neveroperatewithouteitherthe inletnozzleoroptional
hoseattachmentproperlyattachedtothe machine.Never
attemptto attachorchangeeitherattachmentwhilethe
engineis running.
10.Keepall guards,deflectorsand safetydevicesin placeand
operatingproperly.
11.Keepyourface andbody backandtotheside ofthe chipper
chutewhilefeedingmaterialintothe machineto avoid
accidentalkickbackinjuries.
12.Neveroperatethis machinewithoutgoodvisibilityor light.
Alwaysbesureofyourfootingand keepa firmholdonthe
handles.
13.Donotoperatethis machineon agravelsurface.
14.Donotoperatethis machinewhile underthe influenceof
alcoholordrugs.
15.Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcan causeaburn.Do
nottouch.
16.Neverpickupor carrymachinewhilethe engineisrunning.
Maintenance & Storage
1. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproper
operationregularly.
2. Checkboltsand screwsfor propertightnessatfrequent
intervalsto keepthe machinein safeworkingcondition.
Also,visuallyinspectmachineforanydamageandrepair,
if needed.
3. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,stopthe engine
andmakecertainthe impellerand all movingpartshave
stopped.Disconnectthe sparkplugwireandgroundit
againsttheengineto preventunintendedstarting.
4. Do notchangethe enginegovernorsettingsor overspeed
theengine.Thegovernorcontrolsthemaximumsafe
operatingspeedoftheengine.
5. Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionlabels,as
necessary.
6. Followthismanualforsafe loading,unloading,transport-
ing,andstorageofthis machine.
7. Neverstorethe machineorfuel containerinsidewhere
thereisan openflame,sparkor pilotlightsuchas a water
heater,furnace,clothesdryer,etc.
8. Alwaysreferto theoperator'smanualforproperinstruc-
tionsonoff-seasonstorage.
9. Ifthefueltank hasto bedrained,dothisoutdoors.
10.Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsforgas,oil,

way.Tamperingwiththegovernorsettingcan leadto a runaway
engineandcauseit tooperateatunsafespeeds.Nevertamper
withfactorysettingofenginegovernor.

REMOVING THE FLAIL SCREEN
Ifthedischargeareabecomesclogged,removetheflail
screenandcleanareaasfollows:
1. Stoptheengine.Makecertainthechipper/shredder
vacuumhascometoa completestop.
2. Beforeuncloggingthedischargechute,disconnect
and groundthe sparkplugwire to retaining post.
3. Removethevacuumbagor blowerchute(if
equipped)fromtheunitasinstructedintheOPERA-
TIONsectiontoobtainaccesstoflailscreen.
4. Removeselftappingscrewon rightsideofunitthat
attachestotheflailscreen.See Figure5-1.
5. Removehexscrewon topof rearhousingnear
mountingbracketandtheflangelocknutthat

6. Removeandcleanthescreenbyscrapingor wash-
