Operation
Safe HandlingOf Gasoline:
1. Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuse
extremecare in handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableandthevaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonal
injurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselfor
yourclotheswhichcan ignite.
2. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.
3. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.
4. Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleor ona truckortrailer
bedwith a plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthe
groundawayfromyourvehiclebeforefilling.
5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck or
trailerandrefuelitonthe ground.Ifthisisnotpossible,
thenrefuelsuchequipmenton a trailerwitha portable
container,ratherthanfromagasolinedispensernozzle.
6. Keepthe nozzlein contactwith the rimofthefuel tankor
containeropeningatalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Do
notusea nozzlelock-opendevice.
7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersources
ofignition.
8. Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevapors
willaccumulateinthe area.
9. Neverremovegascap oraddfuel whileengineishot or

thecontrolsandthe properuseofthismachinebefore
operatingit.Keepthis manualin asafeplaceforfutureand
regularreferenceandfororderingreplacementparts.
2. Thismachineisa precisionpieceof powerequipment,not a
plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.
Yourunithas beendesignedto performonejob: tomow

4. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto
beused.Removeall stones,sticks,wire,bones,toysand
otherforeignobjectswhichcould betripped overor picked
upand thrownbythe blade.Thrownobjectscancause
seriouspersonalinjury.Planyourmowingpatternto avoid
dischargeofmaterialtowardroads,sidewalks,bystanders
andthe like.Also,avoiddischargingmaterialagainstawall
orobstructionwhichmaycausedischargedmaterialto
ricochetbacktowardthe operator.
5. Tohelpavoidbladecontactorathrownobjectinjury,stayin
operatorzonebehindhandlesandkeepchildren,bystand-
ers,helpersandpetsatleast75feetfrom mowerwhileit is
in operation.Stopmachineif anyoneentersarea.
6. Alwayswear safetyglassesor safetygogglesduringopera-
tionandwhile performinganadjustmentor repairtoprotect
youreyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseserious
injurytothe eyes.
7. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fitting
slacksandshirts.Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthe armsand
legsandsteel-toedshoesarerecommended.Neveroperate

9. Amissingor damageddischargecovercancauseblade
contactor thrownobjectinjuries.
10.Manyinjuriesoccurasa resultofthe mowerbeingpulled
overthefootduringa fall causedby slippingor tripping.

11.Neverpullthe mowerbacktowardyouwhileyouare
walking.If youmustbackthe mowerawayfromawallor
obstructionfirstlookdownandbehindtoavoidtrippingand

a. Stepbackfrommowertofully extendyour arms.
b. Besureyouarewellbalancedwith surefooting.
c. Pullthe mowerbackslowly,nomorethanhalfway
towardyou.
d. Repeatthesestepsasneeded.
12.Do notoperatethe mowerwhileunderthe influenceof
alcoholordrugs.
13.Do notengagethe self-propelledmechanismon unitsso
equippedwhilestartingengine.
14.The bladecontrolhandleis asafetydevice.Neverattempt
to bypassitsoperation.Doingsomakesthe safetydevice
inoperativeandmayresultinpersonalinjurythrough
contactwiththe rotatingblade.The bladecontrolhandle
mustoperateeasily in bothdirectionsandautomatically
returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
15.Neveroperatethemowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureof
yourfooting. Aslipandfall cancauseseriouspersonal
injury.If youfeel youare losingyourfooting, releasethe
bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyand the bladewillstop
rotatingwithinthreeseconds.
16.Mowonlyindaylightor goodartificial light.Walk,neverrun.
17.Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor roads.
18.Ifthe equipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe
engineand checkimmediatelyfor the cause.Vibrationis
generallyawarningoftrouble.
19.Shutthe engineoff andwaituntilthe bladecomesto
acompletestop beforeremovingthe grasscatcheror
uncloggingthe chute.Thecuttingbladecontinuesto rotate
for afewsecondsafterthe engineisshutoff. Neverplace
anypartofthe bodyinthe bladeareauntilyou aresurethe
bladehasstoppedrotating.
20.Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrail shield,discharge
cover,grasscatcher,bladecontrolhandleor othersafety
protectivedevicesin placeandworking.Neveroperate
mowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failuretodo so,can
resultin personalinjury.
21.Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancauseaburn.Do
nottouch.
22.Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadefor thismachineby
manufacturer.Failureto dosocanresultinpersonalinjury.
23.Ifsituationsoccurwhichare not coveredin this manual,use

Slope Operation:
Slopesareamajorfactorrelatedto slipandfallaccidentswhich
canresultinsevereinjury.Operationonslopesrequiresextra
caution.Ifyoufeeluneasyonaslope,donotmowit.Foryour
safety,usethe slopegaugeincludedas partofthismanualto
measureslopesbeforeoperatingthisunitonaslopedor hilly
area.Iftheslopeis greaterthan15degrees,do notmowit.
Do:
1. Mowacrossthefaceof slopes;neverup anddown.
Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon
slopes.
2. Watchfor holes,ruts,rocks,hiddenobjects,or bumps
whichcancauseyouto sliportrip.Tallgrasscan hide
obstacles.
3. Alwaysbesureofyourfooting. Aslip andfall cancause
seriouspersonalinjury.If youfeelyouarelosingyour
balance,releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediately,and
the bladewillstop rotatingwithin three(3) seconds.

1. Do notmowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,you
couldloseyour footingor balance.
2. Do notmowslopesgreaterthan15degreesas shownon
theslopegauge.
3. Do notmowonwetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcause

1. Neverrun anengineindoorsor inapoorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessand
deadlygas.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe
bladeandall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe
sparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheengineto prevent
unintendedstarting.
3. Checkthe bladeandenginemountingboltsatfrequent
intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefor
damage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewiththe
originalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly',listed
inthismanual.Use ofpartswhichdo notmeettheoriginal
equipmentspecificationsmayleadto improperperformance
andcompromisesafety!"
4. Mowerbladesaresharpandcancut.Wrapthebladeorwear
gloves,anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.
5. Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstight tobesurethe equip-
mentisin safeworkingcondition.
6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproperopera-
tionregularly.
7. Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stopthe engine,discon-
nectthe sparkplugwireandgroundagainsttheengine.
Thoroughlyinspectthe mowerfor anydamage.Repairthe
damagebeforestartingandoperatingthe mower.
8. Neverattempttomakeawheelorcuttingheightadjustment
whilethe engineis running.
9. Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrail
shieldaresubjecttowear anddamagewhichcould expose
movingpartsorallow objectsto bethrown.Forsafety
protection,frequentlycheckcomponentsand replaceim-
mediatelywithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(O.EM.)
partsonly,listedin this manual.'Use of partswhich do
not meettheoriginalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"
10.Donot changetheenginegovernorsettingor overspeedthe
engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperating
speedofthe engine.

Now that you have set up your lawn mower for op-
eration, get aquainted with its controls and features.
These are described below and illustrated on this
page. This knowledge will allow you to use your
new equipment to its fullest potential.
Blade Control Handle
The blade control handle is attached to the up-
per handle of the mower. Depress and squeeze
it against the upper handle to operate the unit=

The recoil starter is attached to the right upper
handle= Stand behind the unit and pulI the recoil
starter rope to start the unit=
Gas and Oi_ FiIFUp
1, Check oil level and add oil if necessary, Follow engine

WARNING: This blade control mechanism
is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass
its operations.
Cutting Height Adjustment Levers
One adjustment lever is located on each wheel and
is used to adjust the cutting height. All four levers
have to be at the same relative position to ensure a
uniform cut.
WARNING: Use extreme care when handling
gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable
and the vapors are explosive. Never fuel the
machine indoorsor while the engine is hot or
running. Extinguish cigarettes, cigars, pipes
and other sources of ignition.

lightoil (or motoroil), If wheelsareremovedforany
reason,lubricatesurfaceofthepivotarmandinner

reardischargedoorperiodicallywithlightoil to

4, Followtheaccompanyingenginemanualforlubrica-

Deck Care
Clean underside of the mower deck after each use
to prevent build-up of grass clippings or otherdebris.

1, Disconnectsparkplugwire,Draingasolinefromlawn
mower,or placea pieceof plasticunderthegascap,
2, Tipmowersothat itrestson thehousing,Keepthe
sidewiththeaircleanerfacingup,Holdmowerfirmly,
WARNING: Never tip the mower more than
90 degrees in any directions and do not
leave the mower tipped for any length of
time. Oil can drain into the upper part of the
engine causing a starting problem.
3, Scrapeandcleantheundersideofthedeckwitha
suitabletool Donotspraywithwater,
4, Putthemowerbackonits wheelsontheground,If
youhadputplasticunderthegascapearlier,make
suretoremoveitnow,
