CHAPTER 1 GENERAL INFORMATION AND OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
2 OPERATION
2. OPERATION
Read and understand the Owner’s Manual before operating this
machine. Failure to follow the safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.
To prevent serious injury, all riders must ride in a passenger seat with
the safety belt fastened.
2.1 PRE-OPERATION CHECK
Inspect the tractor for shipping damage. A thorough visual examination will usually
reveal any damage that may have occurred in transit. Report damage to the proper
authorities so that repairs and claims may be made.
The tractor is shipped with all uids except fuel. As a precaution, however, check
all uid levels, brakes, electrical system, engine, steering, axles, and transmission
as described in Chapter 2 and perform the prescribed lubrication.
2.2 UNDERSTAND THE CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS
Before driving the tractor, become familiar with all operating controls and
instruments as described below. Then drive the tractor without a tow load until you
can handle the vehicle properly.
2.2.1 Operator’s Controls
1. The gasoline ignition switch is a rotary type marked OFF, IGN (ignition),
and START. The diesel ignition switch is a rotary type marked O (o), R
(run), H (heat), and HS (heat/start).
2. The head and tail light toggle switch controls the two sealed beam
headlights and the tail lights.
3. The rear work light toggle switch controls the rear work lights.
4. The gear shift lever is to the right of the driver. It permits selection of
forward or reverse gears and a neutral position.
5. The accelerator pedal is to the right of the brake pedal and is connected
by mechanical linkage to the throttle body (gasoline) fuel injection pump
(diesel).
6. The park brake lever is to the right of the driver. It must be pushed
forward to disengage the park brake. Tension on the brake cable is
changed by loosening or tightening the knob on top of the brake lever.
7. The service brake pedal is to the left of the accelerator pedal.

2.2.2 Instruments
1. The engine hour meter registers how many hours the engine has
operated. It is sealed and can record 99999.9 hours before it returns to
zero.
2. The fuel gauge shows the amount of fuel in the fuel tank. A sending unit
in the tank is connected to the gauge. The gauge is marked E and F to
indicate the relative quantity of fuel in the tank. Keep the needle in the
green part of the gauge.
3. The oil pressure gauge indicates oil pressure only (not oil level). It is
marked 0 to 100 with intermediate index marks.
4. The voltmeter registers voltage across the battery terminals. The needle
should be in the 13V-14V range while the tractor is operating. If the needle
registers below this range while the tractor is operating, this indicates that
the battery is not being charged by the alternator. Stop the tractor and
inspect the battery, cables, and alternator connections.
5. The coolant temperature gauge shows the coolant temperature in the
engine’s water jacket. The gauge needle should rise when the engine is
started, then level out at between 150 and 200 as the engine warms up. If
the needle goes above this range, stop the engine and check for a cooling
system problem.
6. The transmission oil temperature gauge shows the temperature of
the transmission uid. Normal operating temperature is in the 120F to
280F range. If the needle goes above this range, stop the engine and
troubleshoot the cause.
7. Fuses for all electrical circuits (except the optional cab) are located under
the instrument panel in fuse blocks.
2.3 OPERATING THE ENGINE
2.3.1 Starting the Engine
Several things aect engine start, such as battery power, starter motor
performance, and oil viscosity.
1. Perform the daily service checks as detailed in Chapter 2.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Place the gear shift lever in N (neutral) position.
4. Gasoline or LPG only: Start engine.
5. Diesel only: Turn ignition switch to “IGN” and push in preheater switch (not
used for E. Q) for about 15 seconds, then let up the switch.
6. Turn ignition switch to “START” and crank starter for no more than 15
seconds.

7. Diesel only: If engine does not start after 15 seconds of cranking starter,
press the preheater switch (not used of E, Q) for 10 seconds and again
crank starter for no more than 15 seconds.
NOTICE! If the tractor still will not start, allow the starter motor to cool before
repeating the procedure. This will prevent battery drain and starter motor
overheating.
8. After the engine is running smoothly, tap the accelerator pedal to reduce
the fast idle speed. Allow engine to warm up for 2 minutes.
9. Observe instruments to be sure each is working. Do not operate engine if
oil pressure fails to rise or if voltmeter does not show any charge.
2.3.2 Hard Starting
DO NOT use ether as a starting aid. The engine is equipped
with glow plugs or with an automatic preheater. Highly ammable ether
and similar starting aids exposed to these devices can cause a re or an
explosion.
If the tractor fails to start in the normal way, the engine probably needs
service.
NOTE: Because it has an automatic transmission, the tractor cannot be
started by towing or pushing.
NOTICE! When using a battery booster, observe proper polarity or you may
damage the electrical system and battery.
A worn out or badly sulfated battery will produce numerous problems that
cannot be corrected until the battery is replaced.
Always check battery condition and connections before condemning other
tractor systems.
2.3.3 Charging the Battery
To minimize risk of re or explosion when charging a battery:
• Keep sparks and ame away from battery to avoid battery gas explosion.
• If charging the battery while installed in the vehicle, disconnect the
negative(black) battery cable and then the positive (red) cable before
connecting the charger.

• With the charger unplugged and the
switch OFF, connect the positive (red)
charger
cable to the positive (+) battery
terminal and then the negative
(black) charger cable to the negative
(-) battery terminal.
• Set the charger for the correct
voltage and charging rate. Then plug
the charger in and turn the switch
ON.
• When charging is completed, turn
the charger OFF, unplug it and then
disconnect negative and then
positive cables. Reconnect the
positive and then the negative
battery cables
Slow Charging
Slow charging passes a relatively small amount (5-7 amps) of current through
a battery for a long period (14-16 hours or longer).
Slow charging is preferred to fast charging if time is available, but a sound
battery will not be damaged by proper fast charging. Older batteries respond
better to slow charging.
Before charging, clean and ll the battery to recommended level. If battery
is to remain in the loader, remove cables to prevent damage to machine
electronics.
Attach POSITIVE charger lead to POSITIVE battery post, and NEGATIVE
charger lead to NEGATIVE battery post.
NOTICE! Watch battery temperature during charging. If it exceeds 125°F,
lower the charge rate. Temperatures in excess of 125°F will cause serious
battery damage.
Remove battery from charger when charged because overcharging is
harmful.
When installing the battery, be sure you connect the ground strap to the
negative battery post.
Fast Charging
Fast charging sends a relatively heavy initial current (50-60 amps) through the
battery. This will impart a fairly good charge in one to two hours.

Prepare battery and make connections as with slow charge method. If you
plan to charge the battery while it is in the machine, DISCONNECT THE
BATTERY CABLES.
Place battery in a clean container because some electrolyte may spill out.
After charging and battery cools down, return spilled electrolyte to battery.
As battery begins to take on a charge, charger current will automatically
decrease.
A fast charger will not bring a battery up to full charge. When the battery is
about 3/4 charged, use a slow rate to bring battery up to full charge.
If battery does not respond to a fast charge, try the slow charge method.
2.3.4 Jump Starting The Tractor
Cold weather reduces battery eciency. For example, at 32F, battery capacity
is reduced to 65%, and at 0F, capacity is reduced to 40%.
A 12-volt booster battery can be connected in parallel with battery on the
tractor to aid in cold weather starting. Heavy duty jumper cables will supply
signicantly more current than light duty cables.
To minimize risk of re or explosion when jump starting a
vehicle:
• Keep sparks and ame away from battery to avoid battery gas explosion.
• Do not allow the booster and dead vehicles to touch. Set park brakes and
turn both vehicle ignitions OFF.
• Connect one end of the positive (red) booster cable to the positive (+)
terminal on the dead battery and then the other end of this red cable to the
positive (+) terminal of the booster vehicle battery.
• Connect the end of the negative (black) booster cable to the negative
(-) terminal of the booster vehicle battery and the other end of this black
cable to a unpainted bolt or bracket on the dead vehicle (good ground)
located as far as possible from the dead battery to minimize the possibility
of igniting any hydrogen gas.
• Start the booster vehicle and let it idle for several minutes, then start the
dead vehicle. If the vehicle fails to start in a normal manner, discontinue
jump starting and service the vehicle for other problems.
• Once the dead vehicle is running, disconnect the booster cables in the
reverse order they were installed.
• Never allow booster cable ends to touch while connected to a battery.

2.3.5 Engine Performance
To get the best performance and the longest life from your engine, you must
ensure that maintenance operations are done as indicated in Chapter 2. If
the engine works in a very dusty environment or other adverse conditions,
maintenance will have to be done more frequently. Replace lter elements
and lubricating oil regularly to remove corrosive materials and compounds.
Ensure that adjustments and repairs are done by persons who have had the
correct training.
The left and right sides of the engine are as when seated in the operator’s
seat.
Read the “Safety Precautions” in section 1 of this chapter.
BREAK-IN
Gradual new-engine break-in is not recommended because prolonged
operation at light loads during the early life of the engine can cause excessive
carbon build-up.
As soon as the engine is put into service and coolant temperature has
reached at least 140F, you can apply maximum load to the engine.
Do not operate the engine at high speeds without a load and do not overload
the engine.
ADJUSTING ENGINE SPEED
Do not change the idle or maximum speed settings because this can
damage the engine or transmission. Adjust speed only to the manufacturer’s
specications.
Engine warranty can be aected if the seals on the fuel injection pump
(diesel) are broken during the warranty period by a person not approved by
Northwestern Motor Co.
ALTITUDE (diesel)
If the engine is to run at an altitude above 2,000 ft., fuel delivery can be
adjusted to reduce fuel consumption and smoke. NMC-Wollard, Inc. can
advise as to fuel reduction necessary if details of engine application and
ambient conditions are given. Changes to settings of the fuel injection pump
must be made by authorized personnel.

2.4 DRIVING THE TRACTOR
When the engine is warmed up, the tractor is ready for work. Use lights as
required.
1. Release parking brake and apply foot brake.
2. Place gear shift lever in proper speed range:
STANDARD OPTIONAL MORSE
D – No load or light load F - Forward
2 – Medium load N - Neutral
1 – Heavy load or inclines R - Reverse
R – Reverse
3. Release the foot brake and depress the accelerator pedal slowly and evenly.
As the tractor starts to move and increase speed, the transmission will up shift
automatically, unless you are in “1” or ”R”.
NOTICE! Do not shift from a forward gear (D, 2, or 1) to reverse (R) or from
reverse to a forward gear unless the tractor is at a complete stop. Failure to do this
will damage the transmission and void the warranty.
4. When towing, allow tractor to decelerate by releasing accelerator pedal before
applying foot brake. The transmission will downshift automatically.
Secure all hitch pins and pintle hitches with a safety retainer pin to
prevent accidental unhooking, which can result in a run away load.
5. When driving or towing, avoid the tendency to oversteer and turn too sharply.
Allow enough clearance for the towed load.
Limit travel speed. Ground conditions, congestion, slope, location
of personnel and other factors increase risk of collision or injury to personnel
Always approach turns slowly and carefully. When approaching
blind corners or steering around obstructions, reduce speed and proceed
cautiously.
Be extremely alert during hazardous operating conditions.
Operating conditions can change as work progresses and as weather changes.

2.5 SHUTTING DOWN THE TRACTOR
1. Bring tractor to a safe and complete stop and set parking brake.
2. Place gear shift lever in neutral (N).
Be sure that the shift control lever is secure in the neutral detent
and the parking brake is applied to prevent unintended movement that could result
in serious injury or death.
3. Turn o all lights.
4. Turn o ignition switch.
Always set the parking brake when parking the machine. The
transmission does not have an internal parking lock and failure to apply the parking
brake could allow unexpected movement resulting in crushing injury or death.
2.6 MASTER DISCONNECT SWITCH
Some tractors are equiped with a master disconnect electrical switch located in the
engine compartment and operated with a outside handle. With the handle in the
straight up position the switch is closed. Turn CW 90 degrees to open the switch.
2.7 EMERGENCY STOPPING
If the brakes fail, follow this procedure:
1. Downshift to next lower gear, unless already in “1.”
2. Use parking brake to stop tractor by pulling on parking brake lever.
2.8 TOWING THE TRACTOR
NOTICE! Tow the tractor with the rear end picked up or with the drive shaft
disconnected. Failure to do so will damage the transmission.
IN AN EMERGENCY, the tractor may be towed without lifting the wheels or
disconnecting the drive shaft IF:
• Engine is running AND transmission is in neutral.
• Towing distance must be LESS THAN 1 MILE and travel speed LESS THAN
5 M.P.H.
Failure to follow these instructions will cause transmission damage and will
void the warranty.
