NUCLEONIX SYSTEMS PVT. LTD
NUCLEONIX Charge sensitive Pre -amplifier PA320 is designed for use with gas filled
proportional counters. Fully solid-state design and has a choice of two gain factors 1 or 3. Its
mechanical construction enables the detector to be directly connected where as the low output
impedance can drive fairly long connecting cable upto the main amplifier.
FEATURES :
❏Compact Solid state circuit design
qSuitable for wide range of x-ray Proportional and gas flow type of detectors.
qRise time 100 nano sec.
qIt is a charge sensitive pre-amplifier uses N-channel FET.

INSTALLATION
A. CONTROLS / CONNECTORS :
EHT (MHV socket) :High Voltage connector, at which the EHT supply is provided
to connect to the X-ray proportional counter / gas proportional
/ He / BF3 / Neutron detector for detector biasing.
Output (BNC) :BNC Co-axial connector at which output from the Pre -
Amplifieris generated for connecting to shaping amplifier.
LV (socket) :Five pin circular connector at which the LV supply voltages
are provided from the NIM instrumentation bin & power supply
unit. Power up the PA320 is fed.
Detector (MHV socket) :MHV connector, to which detector is connected preferably
through as short RG 59 cable. Cable end has to match with
the appropriate connector on the detector.
Test input :This is a BNC socket at which a -ve test tail pulse can be test
injected for testing the pre-amplifier functionality.
B. EXTERNAL CONNECTIONS :
Having connected the Pre-amplifier to the detector as explained earlier, proceed to make
the connection as follows : (Typical x-ray proportional Counting Systems).
1. Using the HV cable connect the OUTPUT from High Voltage Unit, type HV502 /HV503 to
the HV connector (MHV socket) on PA320.
2. Using Co-axial signal cable connect from the OUTPUT BNC connector on PA320 to the
INPUT of any Pulse shaping Amplifier typically LA520 or AF521or Spectroscopy amplifier.
3. Using LV - I/O, 5 core cable connect to the "LV" connector on PA320 to the LV connector
on Instrumentation bin & power supply. If your instrumentation bin has a 9-pin D-connector,
then you wire up one end with 9 pin D-connector & the other end with 5 pin I/O connector
to mote with corresponding connector on pre-amplifier.

OPERATION
A. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS:
Charge sensitive preamplifier PA320 is designed for connecting directly to any x-ray
proportional counter/ gas proportional detectors, Krypton filled mossbauer detectors, He,
BF3Neutron counters etc. It is essential to have short cable between detector & pre-amplfier
PA320. Ofcourse after passing through the pre-amplifier one needs to amplify the signals
through a proper pulse shaping amplifier. LV cable is connected to PA320 from the NIM bin
& power supply from which LV suppliesare applied to Power up the Pre-amplifier PA320.
HV is applied through a MHV to MHV cable to the preamplifier, typically from a High voltage
unit HV502 unit. Output of the Pre-amplifier us taken to a pulse amplifier such as Linear
Amplifier LA520 or Active Filter Amplifier AF521 or spectroscopy amplifier.
B. CONNECTING CABLES :
1. LV cable (5 pin circular female I/O connector both ends).
2. 'Detector' - MHV to MHV/SHV connector co-axial cable
3. HV cable (MHV male to MHV male cable) between pre-amplifier to High voltage unit.
4. BNC - BNC signal cable (BNC male to BNC male co-axial cable). This output from pre-
amplfier is
