1 Safety Instructions
Please carefully read the following safety instructions before operating the PTS DP1.
•Do not operate the PTS DP1 under wet or moist conditions.
•Do not operate the PTS DP1 when explosive gases or vapors are present.
•Do not open the PTS DP1. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
All guarantees become void if the device is opened.
•The PTS DP1 is a product of laser class 1 (IEC 60825-1).
Accessible Emission Limit (AEL) class 1 LED devices are considered eye safe.

2 General
The PTS DP1 is a flexibly configurable interface adapter for establishing the connections between an optical
SCADA link (e.g. as defined in IEC 60870-5) and a PC with RS-232 interfaces, running a protocol testing
software.
The PTS DP1 has four interfaces, two optical interfaces (820nm wavelength) for connecting to the SCADA
link and two electrical interfaces for connecting to the PC running the protocol testing software.
Different operating modes are selected through three switches.
Low voltage electrical power is supplied to a connector from a mains adapter.
2.1 Standard Components
The standard delivery is prepared for connecting to devices with ST connectors.
Following components are included in the standard delivery:

2.3 The Sidepanels
The data interfaces, mode selector switches, and power connector are located on the two metal panels of
the case. Since there is no clear distinction between "front" and "rear" side, they are equally important
sidepanels.

On the sidepanel #1 are located:
•optical interface OPTICAL #1
•electrical interface RS-232 #1
•three mode switches

On the sidepanel #2 are located:
•optical interface OPTICAL #2
•electrical interface RS-232 #2
•the power connector
LED Indicators
Each terminal of the optical interfaces (transmitter and receiver) has a LED assigned, indicating the light
level present on the terminal. There are three different conditions indicated:
•Constant green: no light
•Constant red: light
•Blinking: activity (light level is changing)
The LED indicator at the power connector lits green if power is supplied.
Interface Assignments
In the following examples, the primary station (control center) is connected to interface OPTICAL #1, and the
secondary device (relay, field device) is connected to interface OPTICAL #2.
However, the PTS DP1 is completely symmetrical and the interfaces can be used in either direction.

3 Modes of Operation - The Mode Switches
The PTS DP1 has three switches for selecting the operating modes.
3.1 SIM / MON Switch
SIM Position - Simulation Mode
The signal path between OPTICAL #1 and OPTICAL #2 is interrupted.
OPTICAL #1 is connected to RS-232 #1.
OPTICAL #2 is connected to RS-232 #2.
Two independent, bidirectional optical / electrical converters are established. The PC with the protocol
testing software can simulate a relay to the control center or a control center to the relay.

MON Position - Monitoring Mode
A completely transparent signal path between OPTICAL #1 and OPTICAL #2 is established.
The data received on interface OPTICAL #1 can be monitored on RS-232 #1.
The data received on interface OPTICAL #2 can be monitored on RS-232 #2.

The described mode of operation requires the OR / NORM switch being in NORM Position.
3.2 LIGHT-ON / LIGHT-OFF Switch
This selection is to adopt to the light position for idle status on the optical interface.
The LIGHT-ON position is is the one defined in the IEC 61850-5-103 standard.
Some protective relays (e.g. from SIEMENS), are delivered with the LIGHT-OFF setting by default.

3.3 OR / NORM Switch
This selection supports a special feature of the PTS 103 protocol testing software. This program can monitor
both (primary →secondary and secondary →primary) data streams of a half duplex connection with only
one serial interface on the PC. To receive both data streams on a single interface, the data must be ORed.

OROR
ORed Data from
both directions
PTS DP1 in ORed monitoring mode
To set the PTS 103 software into the corresponding operation mode, the option "Monitoring of halfduplex
communication …" on the bottom of the Interfaceparameter dialog has to be checked.
The direction of the data is determined from the telegram type (single byte acknowledge $E5 is always
secondary →primary) and the PRM bit in the control byte of the link header.
OR Position
The data received from the two optical links are ORed.
Identical data are available on both RS-232 interfaces of the PTS DP1.
On a half duplex link, the data from both directions can be monitored with the PTS 103 software and only a
single serial interface on the PC.
Of course, setting this switch to the OR position applies only for the monitoring mode.
NORM Position
The data monitored on the two RS-232 interfaces are seperately sensed form the corresponding optical
interfaces as described above for the MON position of the SIM / MON switch.

4 Cables and Connections
4.1 RS-232 Interface Cable
The RS-232 cable for connecting the PTS DP1 to a PC is a so-called "Null-Modem" cable.
The cable has female D-Sub 9 pin connectors on both ends.
The connections between Rx (pin 2) and Tx (pin 3) on the two ends are "crossed".
