Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 1: Introduction
RightFax Remote DocTransport Server is a remote DocTransport on a
dedicated RightFax-supplied server. Remote DocTransport Server can
be run locally or in a satellite office to distribute the workload of sending
and receiving documents with RightFax.
Some configuration is required to communicate with the RightFax
server.
Server specifications

lEthernet cable to connect to your network.
lRubber feet for desktop installation.

l1 to 8 phone lines, depending on your license.
lDCHP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) on network.
lHTML5-compliant version of any of these web browsers: Chrome,
Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

shared.

Setting up the hardware
To install on a desktop
lAttach the four included rubber feet in the locations provided on the
bottom of the appliance and place the appliance in the desired
location.
To mount in a 19-inch rack with shelves
1. Place the appliance on a pre-installed shelf in the rack.
2. Secure the integral front-mounting brackets to the rack frame
using the included rack bolts.
To attach the cables
1. On the front of the appliance, plug in up to 8 phone lines
(maximum number of phone lines depends on your license).
2. Connect the Ethernet cable between your network interface card
and the port labeled GE 1 on the back of the appliance.
3. Plug the power cord into the back of the appliance, then into a
standard wall outlet.
Configuring the Remote DocTransport Server
gateway
Use the following instructions after you have installed and set up your
hardware.
To log in to the internal gateway
1. Open the Web browser on the appliance and browse to the IP
address of the appliance.
2. On the administration Web Login page, enter the Username
and Password, and then click Login.
The default login is:
Username:Admin (case-sensitive)
Password:Admin (case-sensitive)
3. To view the list of configurable features, click the Configuration
button at the top of the list on the left side of the screen.
4. Do one of the following:
lClick Basic to view only the most common features.
lClick Full to view all of the configurable features.

To set up the SBCpeer connection
1. On the home page, in the Configuration list, expand VoIP,
expand Control Network, and then click Proxy Sets Table.
2. In the Proxy Set ID list, select 2.
3. In the Proxy Address table, in line 1, the default IP address
appears as 10.1.10.10. Change the IP address to the IP
address of the SBC (Session Border Controller) that was
provided to you by your SBC SIP trunk provider.
4. Click Submit, and then click Burn to write the new settings to
the internal memory of the appliance.
Setting up dedicated fax channels in analog
appliances
To avoid call collisions when sending and receiving large numbers of
faxes, you can configure Gateway channels in analog appliances so
that some channels will only receive faxes and others will only send
faxes.
To set up dedicated channels in analog appliances
1. Open your browser and log in to http://<appliance
IP>:5050/AdminPage.
2. On the home page, in the Configuration list, expand VoIP, and
then expand GW and IP to IP.
3. Expand Hunt Group, and then click Hunt Group.
4. In the Trunk Group Table, create a second trunk group and
assign some of the existing channels to it. Under Trunk Group
ID, assign 2to the new trunk group and enter a corresponding
fax number in the Phone Number field.
For example, you could assign channels 1-4 to Trunk Group 1
and channels 5-8 to Trunk Group 2.
5. To configure inbound (receive-only) routing:
a. Expand Routing, and then click Tel to IP Routing.
b. Under Src. Hunt Group ID, enter the Hunt Group ID
number for the channels you want to use to receive
inbound calls.
6. To configure outbound (send-only) routing:
a. Under Routing, click IP to Hunt Group Routing.
b. Under Hunt Group ID, enter the Hunt Group ID number
for the channels you want to use to send outbound calls.
7. Click Submit, and then click Burn.
Assigning fax numbers to fax lines
The appliance assigns default phone numbers to the fax lines. You can
change the numbers to match your phone system, and then assign
those numbers to your users.

To assign fax numbers to fax lines
1. Open your browser and log in to http://<appliance
IP>:5050/AdminPage.
2. On the home page, in the Configuration list, click Protocol
Configuration, click Endpoint Settings, and then click
Automatic Dialing.
3. Under Gateway Port, enter a Destination Phone Number, and
then in the Auto Dial Status column, select one of the following
options:
lEnable. The gateway automatically dials the number in the
Destination Phone Number box if a ring signal is detected on
the port.
lDisable. No automatic dialing occurs.
lHotline. Digit routing or Dual-Tone Multifrequency (DTMF)
routing can occur. If no digits are entered during the DTMF
session, the gateway automatically dials the number in the
Destination Phone Number box for that port.
You can assign multiple lines to the same user by entering the
same destination phone number in multiple rows.
4. Click Submit, and then click Burn to write the new settings to
the internal memory of the gateway.
Setting the parameter for number of rings
You can specify in a parameter how many times fax lines will ring
before the appliance answers the call.
To set the number of rings
1. Open your browser and log in to http://<appliance
IP>:5050/AdminPage.
2. Click the ini Parameters tab on the left side of the page.
3. In the Parameter Name box, enter FXONUMBEROFRINGS.
4. In the Enter Value box, enter a single value.
Valid entries are 0to 6to set 1 to 7 rings (for example, enter 3to
set 4 rings).
5. Click Apply New Value.
The Output Window shows the name of the parameter, its value,
and a description.
6. Click the Back to Main tab on the left side of the page.
7. In the Device Actions list at the top of the page, select Reset.
8. Under Reset Configuration, at Reset Board, click Reset, and
then click OK.
The reset process takes 4 minutes, and then the Web Login
page appears.
To delete the parameter
1. On the Web Login page, log in with the administrator
Username and Password or default login.

2. In the Device Actions list at the top of the page, select Save
Configuration File.
3. Click SAVE INI File to download the INI file to your computer.
4. In the downloaded INI file, delete the entire entry
FXONUMBEROFRINGS (there will be only one entry with this
name), and then save the file.
5. In the Configuration File window, select Choose File and
open the INI file saved in the previous step.
6. Click Load INI File, and then click OK.
The reset process takes 4 minutes, and then the Web Login
page appears.

Chapter 3: Defining Appliance Settings and Tasks
This chapter includes instructions for setting up, managing, updating,
restarting, and shutting down the Remote DocTransport Server.
Only RightFax administrators with full administrative access can make
changes to settings and tasks.
About color on Settings pages
Colors on settings pages indicate how changes will effect other users:
lRed indicates that the change will irrevesibly alter the system.
It can also mean that a required setting is only partially completed.
lYellow indicates that the change will render the DocTransport
Appliance temporarily unavailable while new settings are applied.
Before you begin
lInform your users in advance if you will be making changes that will
alter, restart, or shut down the system.
Start here
1. Browse to the sign-in page at http://RFDTS/rightfax or
http://<appliance IP address>/rightfax and enter the device
account information:
Username: admin
Password: password (case-sensitive)
2. Click Appliance in the left panel, and then click Appliance
Settings and Tasks.
To close Remote DocTransport Server, click Sign Out on the Menu.
Changing the IP address or appliance name
The IP address and appliance name uniquely identify the RightFax
Remote DocTransport Server on your network. The IP address is
assigned when you first set it up and it is shipped with the default name
RFDTS.
To use more than one Remote DocTransport Server, you will need to
change the IP address and name for each additional appliance that you
set up on your network.
You can change the IP address either by automatically acquiring a new
address or by manually assigning a new address.
To change the IP address
1. Click Change IP Address. (The current IP address is shown
above this button.)
2. Do either of the following:
lSelect Obtain a new IP address automatically (the
default).
lSelect Use this IP address, and then enter the IP address,
Subnet mask, and Default gateway address.
3. Do either of the following:

lSelect Obtain DNS Server address automatically (the
default).
lSelect Use this DNSServer address, and then enter
addresses for Preferred DNS server and an Alternate
DNSserver, if any.
4. Click Restart.
To change an appliance name
1. Disconnect other DocTransport servers before you begin.
2. Click Change Appliance Name. (The current name is shown
above this button.)
3. Enter a new name. Names are not case-sensitive. The default
name can be changed to any name that complies with standard
DNS naming conventions.
4. Click OK. The system will restart.
Changing domain settings
You can change the network membership of this Remote DocTransport
Server.
To change domain settings
1. Click Change Domain Settings.
2. Select Domain.
3. Enter a different Domain User Account and Password.
4. Click Restart.
To change the Workgroup
1. Click Change Domain Settings.
2. In Workgroup (default), enter the name of a different workgroup.
3. Click Restart.
Setting the appliance date and time
Normally, the local date and time is automatically set when your
appliance is connected to the Internet. If your appliance is not
connected to the Internet, you can set the date and time manually.
To set date and time
1. Click Set Date and Time. (The current date and time is shown
above this button.)
2. Change the Date and Time to match the date and time in the
hardware, and then click OK. The system will restart.
Changing firewall settings
ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is a diagnostic service that
sends messages when there are communication problems in your
network. You can use these messages to troubleshoot Internet
connections.
To enable ICMP echo requests
1. Click Change Firewall Settings.
2. Select Allow ICMP echo (ping) requests, and then click OK.
Applying a software update
The current version of your software is shown above the Apply
Software Update button.
To apply a software update to the appliance
1. Click Apply Software Update.
2. Click Browse, select the update.fau file, and then click Next.
3. Accept the End User License Agreement, and then click Next.
4. When the installation is complete, click Sign Out.

Restarting the appliance
You may need to restart the Remote DocTransport Server after
troubleshooting or system upgrades.
To restart the appliance
lClick Restart Appliance, and then click Restart.
The appliance will automatically shut down and then restart, which
could take several minutes.
Shutting down the appliance
Before shutting down the Remote DocTransport Server, verify that all
users are logged off.
To shut down the appliance software
lClick Shut down appliance, and then click Shut Down.
You can safely disconnect the power after a few minutes.
To restart, plug in the power cord. The software will start automatically.
Reverting to factory settings
After you revert an appliance to factory settings, you must reconfigure
the appliance and the RightFax settings.
Important Reverting to factory settings cannot be reversed.
To revert to factory settings
1. Click Revert to factory settings.
2. Enter the administrator password, and then click OK. The
system will restart.

To connect the Remote DocTransport Server to the RightFax
server
1. Click Appliance in the left panel, and then click RightFax
Settings.
2. If you select Ignore outbound fax queue, the appliance will not
send faxes unless they are specifically routed to it.
3. To open the RightFax server connection page, click (...).
4. In RightFax server address, enter the IP address or server
name.
5. Under MSMQServer, select either of the following:
lSame as RightFax server (default).
lUse this MSMQserver. Enter the MSMQ server address.
6. Click Test Connection to Server to check the address you
provided.
7. Click OK.
8. On the RightFax server, under Message Queuing in Computer
Management, grant the anonymous_logon account Full Control
permission for the following RightFax-related MSMQ queues:
faxserver_receivedfax, faxserver_sendfax, and faxserver_
sendstatus.

The Remote DocTransport Server shows status information for
channels, services, statistics, and events. You can also manage dialing
rules and destination tables.
For more information, see the RightFax Administrator Guide.
Channels status
Each column shows information about the operation and status of the
channels.
Channel number and DocTransport capability
This information is shown as a single uppercase character or a
combination of an uppercase and lowercase characters. Symbols help
to show whether the channel is sending, receiving, idle (waiting),
temporarily unavailable, or offline.
The number of channels your server can support depends on the type of
server software you have purchased. To add more fax channels, see
the RightFax Installation Guide.

lVfor VM-Notify combines with lowercase characters for Send,
Receive, or Both
lSfor Dial w/Ring Detect combines with lowercase characters for
Send, Receive, or Both
Services status
The DocTransport Services are configured and started during
installation. For descriptions of the available services, see the RightFax
Administrator Guide. Symbols help to show whether a service is
running, disabled, stopped, or not configured.
The Services page shows:
lService Name. Name of the module or service.
lStatus. Running, Not configured, Stopped, or Disabled.
lRunning Time. The length of time that has elapsed since the
RightFax Server service was last started.
lStartup. Shows whether the service is automatically started or
must be manually started.
Starting, stopping, or restarting services
If you have the permission Can Manage Services in WebAdmin, you
can also manage services in Remote DocTransport Server.
If a service stops without user intervention, it is automatically restarted
after 60 seconds.

lClick Services in the left panel.
To restart services that are running
1. On the Services page, select one or more running services.
2. On the toolbar, click Restart. If other services are associated
with those you selected, the associated services will restart as
needed.
To start or stop services
lOn the Services page, select one or more services, and then click
Start or Stop.
Remote DocTransport Server statistics and
queues
Remote DocTransport Server statistics include the Description and
numeric Value of work. Queues show actions currently in process on
the appliance.
Symbols for queues show whether work in the queue is decreasing,
increasing, stable, could not be queried, or does not apply to the server.
Symbols for statistics help to show whether the value is critical, within
or outside the normal range, or not available.
To view Work Requests
lClick Statistics, and then click Work Requests on the toolbar.
The total number of notifications, conversion jobs, print jobs, and
other activities on the server is shown for each item listed under
Name.
To refresh the list, click the Refresh button at the bottom of the page.
Event Log
The log shows events that occur during fax processing and other
system tasks.
To view log data
1. Click Event log in the left panel.
2. To see General information and Details, if any, select a
message, and then click View.
3. To limit or expand log data, select Errors,Warnings, or
Information.
Setting up dialing rules
Each dialing rule consists of a number pattern and rules and restrictions
that will be applied if the destination fax number matches the pattern or
number.
Note If your organization requires a dialing prefix for all outgoing calls
(including all outgoing faxes), specify the prefix in the Global Board
Settings. See Configuring the DocTransport Modules in the RightFax
Administrator Guide.
To add a dialing rule
1. Click Dialing Rules in the left panel, and then click New.
2. You can enter a Comment to describe the dialing rule.
To add extra weight
lIn Add extra rule weight, enter a number in the range 0 -100.
This setting adds extra weight to the rule so it can be selected over
another rule that has a better pattern match.

To set pattern matching
1. In Pattern, enter the destination fax number pattern or number
that the dialing rule applies to.
2. In Priorities, select one or all of the priority levels to apply to this
rule.
3. In Fax Traffic Type, select how to restrict the rule.
4. In Minimum queue depth (in pages), enter or select the
number of fax pages that must be waiting in the server’s queue
before this rule is considered.
5. In Minimum fax size (in pages), specify the minimum number
of pages a fax must be before this rule is considered.
To select restrictions
1. Click Restrictions.
2. Select Server Restrictions,User Restrictions, or Group
Restrictions.
3. Select one of the following to restrict each dialing rule to specific
servers, users, or groups in your organization.
lAll(Every) to apply the rule regardless of the origin of the
fax.
lOnly these to apply the rule only to the IDs you specify.
Enter one or more names of servers, users, or groups to
which the rule applies. Use commas to separate multiple
entries.
You can select users or groups from the list. To filter the list,
enter a string in the search box.
lAll but these to apply the rule in all cases except the IDs
you specify. Enter one or more names of servers, users, or
groups that are exempt from the rule. Use commas to
separate multiple entries.

To make adjustments to the fax number
1. Click Adjustments.
2. You can adjust the destination fax number. For information about
valid dialing characters supported by dialing rules, see the
RightFax Administrator Guide.
lTo remove digits from the beginning (range is 0-127), enter or
select one or more digits in Strip beginning digits.
lTo add characters to the beginning, enter valid dialing
characters in Prepend this.
lTo remove digits from the ending (range is 0-127), enter or
select one or more digits in Strip ending digits.
lTo add characters to the ending, enter valid dialing
characters in Append this.
3. You can also Adjust fax priority (priority delta). Priority is rated
on a three-point scale: low priority <= 1, normal priority = 2, high
priority >= 3.
lEnter -2,-1,1, or 2to add or subtract priority points for all
faxes that match the dialing rule pattern.
lTo not change priority, leave the default (0).
To set destination routing
1. Click Destination.
2. Do any of the following:
lTo route faxes to any server on your network, select Send
via fax server and then enter the destination Server Name
(up to 47 characters) or the IP address.

lTo route faxes as inbound faxes to any server on your
network, select Receive into fax server, and then enter the
Server Name (up to 47 characters) or the IP address.
To include a TTI line on the fax, select Insert TTI, and then
specify the Fax ID that should appear in the TTI line.
l(This option may not be available.) To select one of the
transport methods that you added and configured in the
RightFax DocTransport module as the fax destination, select
Send via transport, and then select the Transport Name
from the list.
For more information, see Configuring the DocTransport
Modules in the RightFax Administrator Guide.
To set time and day to balance fax loads
1. Click Time and Day to specify time periods for each day or use
the quick set buttons to apply common time restriction settings.
2. Specify the time periods for each day of the week that the rule
will be applied.
lOn each applicable day, enter hh-hh (24-hour format).
lOn days when the rule should not be applied, delete existing
entries and leave the box blank.
3. In Quick Sets, select from these settings:
lAll Times (default) applies 00-23 from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59
every day.
lWeekend applies 00-23 to Saturday and Sunday and
removes all weekday settings.
lWeekdays applies 00-23 to Monday through Friday and
removes all weekend settings.
lPeak Times applies 00-18 to Monday through Friday and
removes all weekend settings.
lNever removes all settings.
To select Special Actions
1. Click Special Actions.
2. Do any of the following:
lTo process faxes without delay on any available channel,
select No special action.
lTo send faxes only on certain channels, select Send on
specific range of channels, and then enter the Start
channel and End channel.
lTo prevent faxes from sending based on attributes such as
time and day or number pattern, select Disallow sending.
lTo prevent faxes from sending based on attributes such as
time and day or number pattern, but allow faxes to be sent at
a time not restricted by Time and Day settings, select
Reschedule after disallow sending.
lTo delay a send time, select Delay fax to specific time, and
then enter or select the time in HHMM format (for example, to
delay the fax until 7:15 PM, enter 0715).
lTo delay a send time for a specific number of minutes, select
Delay fax for a specific interval, and then enter the number
of minutes to delay.
To set DnD Notifications
1. Click DnD Notifications.
2. Select the check boxes of users you want to be notified when a
fax is blocked.
lYou can type a string in the search box to filter the list, and
then select users from the filtered list.

3. If Disallow sending is selected in Special Actions, you can
notify senders who attempt to send a fax to that number. Select
Notify the sender that the document was blocked.
Testing dialing rules and fax routes
You can test dialing rules and fax routes without sending a fax.
To set up the Test Scenario
1. Click Dialing Rules in the left panel.
2. Click Test Dialing Plan on the toolbar.
3. In the Fax number box, enter a fax number (up to 50
characters).
4. To test how each affects the execution or route of a rule, you can
also:
lEnter a User ID.
lEnter a Group ID.
lSelect a Fax priority (Low, Normal, High).
lEnter Number of pages (1-999).
5. If the dialing rule applies to production faxes, select Integration
fax. Production faxing is implemented with the Integration
module (for information, see the RightFax Integration Module
Administrator Guide).
To verify dialing rule execution
1. Set up the Test Scenario.
2. Click Execute Rules. As the fax is routed, the Result box
shows the following:
lEach dialing rule against which the fax number is compared.
lInformation about the match weights and server availability.
To verify the route of a fax
1. Set up the Test Scenario.
2. Click Trace Route. As the fax number passes one or more
servers, the Result box shows the following:
lWhich rules are being used.
lHow the fax number is manipulated along the way.
lThe number of hops or jumps from server to server.
lThe time it takes to route between servers. This does not
include the time to transfer image data. That additional time
depends on the size, resolution, and density of the fax.
Viewing destination tables
Destination tables are used to store and organize groups of numbers
such as dialing prefixes and area codes. To create destination tables in
EFM, see the RightFax Administrator Guide.
To view destination tables
lClick Destination Tables in the left panel. You can sort by the
Table Name or type a string in the search box on the toolbar to filter

Appendix A: Troubleshooting
Cannot connect to http://rfdts
If you are unable to connect to the appliance after connecting your
network cable and browsing to http://rfdts, your network might not have
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) enabled.
You can temporarily connect another computer or laptop to the
appliance and use it to assign an IP address on your network.
To use a computer to assign an IP address to the appliance
1. Ensure that the network interface card for the computer or laptop
is set to obtain an IP address automatically.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable between the network interface card
of the computer or laptop and the port labeled GE 1 on the back
of the appliance.
3. On the computer or laptop, open WebAdmin by browsing to
http://rightfax.
lSupported browsers are HTML5-compliant versions of
Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
4. Sign in to WebAdmin with the default admin account:
Username: administrator
Password: password (case-sensitive)
5. Click Appliance.
6. Click Change IP Address.
7. Under IPAddress, click Use this IP address, and then enter
the IP address,Subnet mask, and Default gateway.
8. Under DNS Server, click Use this DNS Server address, and
then enter a Preferred DNS server and an Alternate DNS
server address.
9. Click Restart.
10. Disconnect the computer or laptop.
11. Reconnect the appliance to the network.
12. Open a browser on a computer on the network.
13. Enter http://<appliance IP address>/rightfax.
