Data Logging Operation and Settings:
The C16 logs or records time stamped, gas concentration readings in time intervals of 1,
5, 10, or 15 minutes. The logged reading range from 0 to the full range of the sensor, therefore,
it is important to ensure that the correct sensor is used for the situation. The device displays the
amount of time remaining for logged data which is dependent on the interval chosen and also
provides an option to clear the memory. The following steps and information will provide you with
the information needed to start data logging.
Recommended Step: Installation of C16 Log application (if software is already installed you
can continue to the next section)
The data logging software can be installed from the CD labeled, “PortaSens II Datalog”,
which is supplied with the device. The software can also be downloaded from the ATI website:
http://www.analyticaltechnology.com
(Mouse over Gas Detection and click on C16 Portable Gas Leak Detector, then click on the red
link labeled “Click Here to Download the Datalog Software for Win7 32/64 Bit)
Installation:
Disk: Insert disk in CD drive slot. Click “Run Setup.exe”in the windows that appears.
Download: Click Open in the download manager form when it appears (or click Save to the save
the program to be installed at a later time). After download has completed, double click on
“setup.exe”as pictured below. Once the software has fully installed, the data logging can begin.

Data Logging:
Key Functions:
Clear (CLEAR) The Clear function clears the data logged memory from the device. This also resets
the amount of sampling time remaining to the maximum value allowed. Any data logged samples
not yet downloaded through the follow process will be lost using this function.
Interval (INT) The Interval setting tells the device when to take samples of data, 1, 5, 10, or 15
minutes. The maximum sampling capacity capable of each interval is shown in the table below.
Recommended Materials:
Software: C16 Log application as noted on the previous page of this document.
Cabling: RS232-to-USB Adapter (unless the computer has a RS232 port) to connect to the RS232
cable that was included with the C16 monitor.
Computer: A computer running Windows 7 or 8, 32 or 64 bit. Other operating systems will work
with the software, back to Windows XP, however due to additions to the software it is
recommended that Windows 7 or 8 be used.
Before logging: Time Adjustment
The time on the C16 monitor may be incorrect, so it is good practice to connect the monitor
to the computer using the steps on pages 6 and 7. Upon opening the software, it will notify you if
the time is incorrect, if no error message is received the time is correct and the monitor is ready
for logging.
Begin Logging:
The following chart will give you the steps necessary to begin gather data from the C16
sensor.

The data logging process is done completely through the monitor itself. The computer is
only necessary to get the logged data off of the monitor and then from there it can be put into
and Excel file or other forms of readable data.

Press the LOG key.
If the data logging has already been started, menu L2 will be displayed,
otherwise menu L1 is displayed
L1
Press on of the following keys:
CLEAR
Hold this key down for two seconds to clear the
logged data. This will remove the label above the
button and if the memory is already empty the label
will not appear.
INT
Advances the logging interval to the next selection (1,
5, 10, or 15).
START
Holding this key down for two seconds starts the data
logger. The device then returns to the Main Display,
D10, and indicates that data logging is active
DONE
Exits the menu and returns to the Main Display, D10.

Press one of the following keys:
STOP
Holding this key down for two seconds stops the
data logger and returns to menu, L1.

Gathering the Data:
Once the data logging is completed, the data can now be retrieved from the monitor for
viewing. The following information will provide the information to retrieve the data from the C16
monitor.
Connecting the Device:
Connecting the device to the computer uses both the RS232-to-USB cable and the supplied
RS232 cable (unless the computer has a RS232 port, then only the RS232 cable will be used). To
start the round end of the RS232 cable will be connected to the C16 monitor to the RS232
Communication Port as shown in Figure 2 below.
Figure 2
Once the RS232 cable is connected to the monitor, it can now be connected to the
computer using the RS232-to-USB cable (or the RS232 port if the computer is equipped with one).
The RS232 connection will be connected to the RS232 port and then the USB plug will be plugged
into an open USB port on the computer.

Opening the Software:
The software that was previously installed on the computer can now be opened to allow
the connection to begin. An example of the icon is located below in Figure 3.
Figure 3
The software will open and verify that the connection to the C16 monitor is ok. If the error
message that is displayed below appears, it means the clock of the C16 is incorrect based on the
computers clock and the software is asking if it should be corrected. This error may indicate that
the data that has been collected on the device may have the incorrect times recorded if the

Troubleshooting: Should connection issues arise there are some steps that can be done to
ensure the connection and settings are correct.
1. Ensure all of the connections are properly connected and secure.
2. Make sure the software is using the correct Serial or COM port. This can be
determined in the Configure tab and Communications section as pictured below.
Figure 5

Using the Software:
On startup, the program displays the Configure tab, which is where the configuration for
the downloaded data is set. The data can be stored in any folder of choice, by default it is stored
in the file path of C:\Users\Public\Documents\Analytical Technology\C16Log\. This location can be
changed to another folder by using the selection pane on the bottom left of the Configure tab. The
rest of the settings on the Configure page are determined by the type of data output required.
Figure 6
The 12 Hour Format (AM/FM) and 24 Hour Format radio buttons will tell the software what
timestamp to put on the data. The checkbox for Automatically Generate Save File Name will save
the file name as the default template, otherwise the software will allow a name to be given to the
files upon saving, if unchecked. The second set of radio buttons that include: Comma Delimited (.csv),
Space Delimited (.txt), and Tab Delimited (.txt) will tell the software the format to save the data
file in.
File Type Explanations:
The Comma Delimited (.csv) file method will allow the data gathered from the C16 monitor
to be input into a database or other applications that allow imports from CSV file types such as
Excel.
The Space Delimited (.txt) and Tab Delimited (.txt) files can be used as is and printed as
text documents. They can as well be used by certain programs to import into, some versions of Excel
offer this feature.

Data Download:
The Download tab (pictured below) is where the data is retrieved from the C16 monitor
and the filename(s) are displayed in the Destination pane of this tab. As long as the C16 monitor is
connected to the computer and the indicator in the bottom left of the window says Link OK with a
green background the data is ready to be retrieved. Clicking Get Data will begin the download
and once it is complete you will see the filename(s) in the Destination section.
Figure 7
The files that are downloaded can now be seen in the file folder that was chosen for the
save file. From there these documents can be used for whatever purpose is necessary.
Import into Excel:
If the document needs to be part of an Excel document there are multiple ways to
accomplish this. If the document was saved as a CSV file, it is accomplished by right clicking the
file and clicking Open with, and choosing Excel. Excel is programmed to take the information of a
CSV file and format it so it is displayed in the spreadsheet properly.
If import the file that was saved as a text document or .txt this can be done by opening a
blank Excel document (can also be used for CSV files but in unnecessary due to the above step).
Under the Data ribbon or tab there will be an option for From Text (pictured in figure 8) and

choosing the file you wish to import. Upon choosing the file to import a Text Import Wizard will
appear to configure the import.
Figure 8
In the Text Import Wizard Step 1 of 3 and Step 3 of 3 window all of the default choices
can stay the same unless other specifics are required for the spreadsheet. The Step 2 of 3 window
in Figure9 will be the most important step in importing properly. The Delimiters section of this
page will be used to tell Excel where to go to the next cell for the next set of data. For the
downloaded files they are either space or tab delimited, dependent on what file type was chosen
in the C16 Log application. If the proper Delimiter is not chosen the data will not be imported in
the correct format, and will be imported into one column.
