referred to as “PCM”) recording.
You can switch the microphone position to ZOOM to
record with the sound in front of you emphasised.
Recording settings optimised according to recording
scene are provided, enabling you to turn on the
power, select a recording setting, and then start

●Use an alkaline battery.
●Remove the battery from the unit if you will not use it
for a long period of time.
1 AAA LR03 battery (not supplied)
Make sure the battery faces the
right direction.
The remaining battery level is displayed as below
while this unit is operating.
Blinking
●If the battery runs out, “ ” blinks. Replace the
battery as soon as possible.
●When the battery runs out of power, “ ” is
indicated and then the power turns off automatically.
●Depending on the battery status or the operation
content to use, even if the power turns off due to the
battery exhaustion, this unit may be used for a while if
turned on again. However, the unit may suddenly turn
off during operation due to the low level of battery.
●Some level of battery is required when performing
deleting files, formatting (➜ page 14), and dividing
files (➜ page 27). If the battery indicator shows “ ”
(blinking) and these operations are performed, the
power turns OFF due to the battery exhaustion.
●Make sure to turn the power off before removing
the battery.
• If the battery is removed while the unit is on, data
may be lost or this unit may be damaged.
Set the clock after inserting a battery for the first time
or replacing the battery. (➜ page 9)

OPR/HOLD switch:
ON
Turning the power ON:
Slide the OPR/HOLD switch to [ON] side to turn the
power on. Then, the display lights on.
Turning the power OFF:
Slide the OPR/HOLD switch to [OFF] side while the unit
is in the stop state.
Auto power off:
The power automatically turns off after 30 minutes
elapse when the unit is in a stop state.
If the power is turned off by the auto power off function,
slide the OPR/HOLD switch to the [OFF] side before
turning the power on.
Set the current date and time when turning this unit
on for the first time. (➜ page 9)
Button operations are ignored when the Hold function
is on.
To switch the Hold function on:
Slide the OPR/HOLD switch to the [HOLD] side during
recording or playback.
“” appears and the Hold function turns on.
To switch the Hold function off:
Slide the OPR/HOLD switch in the opposite direction of
[HOLD].
“” appears and the Hold function turns off.
●When the Hold function is on, operation is ignored
even if the buttons are pressed while the power is
on (“ ” is displayed), enabling you to prevent
unintended operations such as the stopping of
recording or playback.
●When recording or playback finishes while the Hold
function is on, the power turns off automatically.

The clock is used as a file name (➜page 38) or to preserve recording date and time information.
Set the correct date and time. The date and time need to be set after the battery is replaced.
Setting the clock
• Turn the power on. (➜ page 8)
• After turning the power on for the first time
after purchase or replacing the battery,
proceed to step 3.

• Set the last two digits of the year.
(“12” in the case of 2012)

Select “ ” for 24-hour display, and “ ” for
12-hour display.
• The display format that is blinking is
currently selected.

To change the setting, press u, ito
move between the items, and then press
+, – again to make the setting.
9Press [qOK] to enter.
• The date and time are set and the clock
starts to operate.
To exit the setting screen, press
[STOP g/RETURN].
●The clock operates with the monthly loss/gain of approx. 60 seconds at normal temperature.
●The clock setting will be lost if the battery is removed or completely exhausted.

File and Folder Selecting the folder
File
Recorded audio data from the starting point to
the ending point is saved as a file.
The saved data is called a file.
Folder
This is where files are stored. This unit has the
following folders.
• “MIC” folder for microphone recording
(➜page 12).
• “LINE” folder for files recorded from other
devices connected to this unit (➜page 30).
• “MUSIC” folder for music (➜page 25).
Up to 199 files can be recorded in the “MIC”
and “LINE” folders.
Folders are created in the internal memory.
When an SD card(➜page 24) is inserted,
folders are created in the same way on the SD
card.
 In this manual, microSD/microSDHC card is
written as “SD card”.
●When the “MUSIC” folder is selected for the
first time after the unit is turned on, the status
indicator blinks, “ ” is displayed on the
screen, and the track list is updated.
• When the unit is not in the stop state, press
[STOP g/RETURN].
1Press [FOLDER].
Each press:
Total playback time
 If no file has been transferred to the
“MUSIC” folder, the current time is
displayed.
If the SD card is selected, “SD” is displayed
on the screen. (See below)

Recording
Note when recording
This unit is equipped with a high-sensitivity microphone.
Accordingly, if a breath or wind directly hits the
microphone during recording, the wind-cutting sound
may be recorded or voice may be difficult to hear.
1. This can be prevented
by blocking the wind
with your body so that
the wind does not
directly hit the unit.
Keep distance
2. During dictation recording,
slightly move this unit from
front of your mouth or keep
distance.
 Turning the LOW CUT FILTER (➜page 17) to ON
reduces the sound of low frequency range. This may
help the reduction of the wind-cutting sound.
●Sound may jump during recording (especially PCM
recording) depending on use conditions of the internal
memory and SD card. Formatting them on this unit
(➜page 14) before recording is recommended.

Switching microphone position
You can switch the microphone position to ZOOM to
record with the sound in front of you emphasised. Switch
the microphone position depending on the use.
STEREO ZOOM

Do not switch the microphone position during recording. The
sound that occurs when switching is performed is also recorded.
● The microphone position function operates when the built-in
microphone is used. It does not operate when an external
microphone is connected for recording (➜page 28) or when a
different device is connected for recording to this unit (➜page 30).

Recording
●Before recording, check that there is sufficient battery power remaining.
●Change the sound quality or microphone sensitivity as necessary. (➜ pages 16, 17)
●A recording scene selection function is available for simultaneously retrieving all the recording
settings recommended for the recording scene. (➜ page 15)
●If the file size exceeds 2 GB during recording, recording is stopped temporarily at 2 GB, and then
recording is continued with a new file. Nothing is recorded during the time (approximately
2 seconds) between recording temporarily stopping and then restarting.
●Note if your finger or an object touches this unit during recording, the noise will be
recorded through the microphone.

Turn up the volume: Press +.
Turn down the volume: Press –.
Volume range is 0 to 20.
(The factory setting is “12”.)
If you turn the unit off with the volume set to 17
or more, the volume will be set to 16 next time
the unit is turned on.
Operations during playback
Jump (Skip):
Press u, i.
Press umidway while playing a file and the
playback jumps to the beginning of the file.
To return to the previous file, press uwithin
approx. 1 second from the beginning of the file.
Fast backward/Fast forward (Search):
Press and hold u, i.
To stop:
Press [STOP g/RETURN].

Delete unnecessary files.
• When the unit is not in the stop state, press
[STOP g/RETURN].
• Select the file or folder you want to delete.

There are three methods to delete files.
: Select one file and then delete it.
: Delete all files in the selected folder.
(Files in subfolders and the actual
folder cannot be deleted)
:Delete all data such as all files in
the internal memory or SD card and
data in the folders displayed when
the unit is connected to a computer.

• To cancel the deletion, press
[ERASE/A-B&] again or press
[STOP g/RETURN].

method and press [qOK] to enter.
• When you want to delete only one file,
select the method while making sure you
do not accidentally select “ ” or

• If you selected “ ” for the
deletion method, press uor ito
select the internal memory ( ) or SD

selection, and then proceed to step 3.

The status indicator blinks during deletion.
It may take several minutes until the
deletion is complete.
•
When “ ” appears, deleting or formatting
is complete.
• Select “ ” to stop deleting or formatting.
• If you attempt to perform a format without
inserting an SD card, “ ” is displayed.
Deleting files and formatting
●Deleted files cannot be restored.
●Save necessary files to the computer or external devices before formatting.
●Cancelling is not possible while formatting.
●Before deleting data, check that there is sufficient battery power remaining.
●Do not remove the battery or SD card while formatting.
●
With file deletion ( ) and folder deletion ( ), only files that can be played on this unit can be deleted.
However, Read-only music files transferred from the computer cannot be deleted using this unit.
Delete them on the computer. (➜ page 37)
●The file numbers displayed on this unit are moved forward after file deletion ( ).

Selecting the recording scene (SCENE SELECT)
This unit offers recommended recording settings for each recording scene. Selecting the recording
scene enables easy recording with the most appropriate settings.

●If you select “ ” in step 3, the unit returns to the state immediately before starting setting of
the recording scene, and the recording scene is not displayed.
●If you change settings such as the sound quality after the recording scene is set, the selected
settings overwrite the “ ”, and the recording scene indication disappears.
●The recording scene operates when microphone recording is used. Recording scene does not
operate when another device is connected and the LINE/MIC switch is set to [LINE] (➜page 30).

3Press +, – to select “PCM”, “XP”,
“LP”, or “SLP” and press [qOK]
to enter.
(The factory setting is “XP”.)
To exit the setting screen, press

The selected sound quality is
displayed.
You can change the sound quality. This allows you to provide the best sound quality for the
particular purpose.

Switch the microphone sensitivity according to the
volume of the sound source. When the sound source
volume is loud, set the sensitivity to “ ” (LOW).
When it is low, set the sensitivity to “ ” (HIGH).
• When the unit is not in the stop state, press
[STOP g/RETURN].

: Sets the microphone sensitivity to the
high level.

When VAS (Voice Activated System) is set, if silence continues for approx. 2 seconds during microphone
recording, the recording is paused automatically. If the unit detects sound, the recording resumes.
●For important recording, set the VAS setting to OFF.
●If the LOW CUT FILTER setting is ON, low frequency sound may be cut out and VAS recording
may not activate. In this case, change the LOW CUT FILTER setting to OFF. (➜page 17)
●If the recording is paused with no sound state, “VAS”, recording indicator, and “*” blink. When
[REC *] is pressed from this recording pause state, the status is changed to normal recording
pause state and “VAS” lights up.
Preventing unnecessary recording (VAS)
• When the unit is not in the stop state, press
[STOP g/RETURN].
1Press [MENU].
2Press u, ito select “VAS” and
press [qOK] to enter.
3Press +, – to select “On” and press
[qOK] to enter.

At 1 minute before the specified time, the “ ”,
recording indicator, and “ ” blink and the unit
enters the standby state.
“ ” blinks during timer recording.
If you press [STOP g/RETURN] during a timer
recording or standby, you can cancel the timer
recording.
Recording at a specified time (TIMER RECORDING)
●If the power is off at the specified time, the power turns on and the timer recording starts, and then
the power turns off at the end time.
If the unit is in a playback state, playback stops and the timer recording starts.
●During timer recording, only stop operation and volume adjustment can be performed. Switch the
Hold function to off before operation if it is on.
●
Timer setting is disabled when the battery is replaced. Therefore, readjust the setting after replacing battery.

The playback speed can be adjusted in 21 steps from
the slow speed of 0.5 times normal speed (50%) to
the fast speed of 2 times normal speed (200%).

• i: Each press of this button increases
the playback speed.
• u: Each press of this button reduces the
playback speed.
The playback speed can be adjusted in 10%
steps for speeds faster than normal speed
(100%), and 5% steps for speeds slower
than normal speed (100%).
• Press [STOP g/RETURN] to return to
normal speed (100%).
