INTRODUCTION
In 1997,Panavision and Sony announced their
collaboration on the developmentofa 24P digitalhigh
definition camera suitable foruse by filmmakersto
create big screen motion picture image quality. We
knew,from 45 yearsofexperience,thata complete
imaging system approach was the only way for
traditionalfilm crewstomakeaseamlesstransitioninto
digitalproduction.Withthisinmind,wemadeanumber
ofmodificationstotheSonyHDW-F90024Pcamera.For
starters,the Panavised camera received a heavy duty
frontplate and lensmountmodified to work with our
speciallydesignedPrimoDigital
TM lenses.Thesystem now
accommodates mostofourstandard film camera
accessories as wellas new accessories designed
exclusivelyfordigitalcinematography.
In addition to the mechanicalmodifications to the
camera,auniqueopticalpre-filtergivesyoubettercolor
matching with film emulsionsand enhanced resolution
forblue screen effectscinematography. Last,butnot
least,wedesignedthenew ULTRAVIEWviewfinderfor
studio and handheld cine-style use. Itpresentsa 2
timeslargerimagealongwithagreaterdiopterrange.

1.8 PROGRESSIVEVS.INTERLACE
The24PHD ElectronicCinematographyCameraSystem
isa PROGRESSIVE capture device unlike oldervideo
camerasthatcapture the image in an INTERLACE
manner.
INTERLACE: A videoscanningsystem wheretheodd
numbered linesare scanned separately
from theevennumberedlines.Theodd
numberedlinesform fieldone,theeven
linesmakeupthesecondfield.
PROGRESSIVE: A video system in which alllines
comprising a frame are scanned in
sequenceratherthaninterlaced.
Theinterlacemodeofcaptureis½ resolutionintimevs.

andisdifficulttotransfertofilm.Theprogressivemode
ofshooting capturesthe complete resolution atonce

1.9 GENERALIMAGING CONSIDERATIONS
TheHD900Fhasawiderangeofmenusettingsthatallow theusertocontrolthelookof
the picture.These settingscan be a powerfultoolto change ormodify the captured
image.Mostcomponentsofthe video signalcan be manipulated.Levels,saturation,
gammaandmatrixwillhaveamajorinfluenceoverthefinalvideooutput,beitforTVor
film.
Whilethereisnorightorwrongwaytoapproachhow thecameraisused,youshouldbe
awareoftheconsequencesofemployingcertainmenu functions.Wedo notdetermine
whowillmakeadjustmentsorwhenthesefunctionswillbeemployed,butinmostcases,
theyaremadeatthebehestoftheDP.Whilethesefeaturesmayproveusefulforshows
thatarevideooutonly(TV),ifmisused,theycanhaveirreversibleconsequenceson a
film-outshow (feature).Judicioususeofthesefeaturescan prove beneficial.However,
minimum manipulationoftheimagethatwillresultinacleancameramasterisdesirable.
Itisbettertoleavethedecisiontomanipulatetheimage(toamuchhigherdegreethan
thecameraallows)forthelessstressfulenvironmentofthepostproduction suite.The
followinglistisnotinclusiveofeverymenufunction,butprovidesabriefexplanationof
whycertainprecautionsshouldbeheeded.
Detail:The detailfunction willprovide artificialenhancementto the video image
particularly around the edge ofan object.Thisfeature,like severalothers,is
incorporatedintothecameraforliveTV broadcastproductions.A typicaluseistomake
participantsstandoutfrom thebackgroundduringsportingevents.
WhilethisisusefulforTVapplications,employingdetailforafilm outputproductionwill
putunnaturaledgingaroundthesubject.Inaddition,useofdetailwillmakethequality
ofCGIormattesvery poorsince the matte processtriesto avoid any appearance of
edges.
DCC:DCC isDynamicContrastControlorauto knee.Itisaccessible through a toggle
switchonthecamerabody.Itisusedduringnewsordocumentarysituationswherethere
islittleornocontroloflightingandcontrastratios.Ifthereisabrightobjectinthescene
thatisover100% whitelevel,DCC willautomaticallypulltheleveldown(compress)so
the highlightwillnot"blow out".Fora scripted project,itcan be seen thatautomatic
correction ofhighlightscould add undesirable elementsto the scene asthe camera
movesorpansthroughoutthescene.Whilecontrolofthe highlightsisnecessary,itis
besttousethemanualkneeandslopefunctionstoachievethedesiredresult.
BlackGamma:Thiscircuitallowsforstretchorcompressionofthetoe(black)portionof
thevideosignal.Thiscanbeusedtoaffectthecontrastinthedarkareasofthepicture
whilenotchangingthemid-tonesorhighlights.Sincethisportionofthesignalcontains
thehighestamountofgain,itisclosesttothenoisefloor.Consequently,expandingthe
signalwillalsointroducemorenoiseintothepicture.Thismaynotalwaysbeadesired
additiontothefinallook.Forafilm outproject,testingisprudent.
Matrix:Thematrixisaseriesofmathematicalcalculationsthatareappliedtothecolor
outputofthecamera.Itspurposeistomatchthecolorspaceofthecameratothefinal
display device.Itissimilarto certain equalization curvesthatare employed in the
recording industry to ensure thatthe playback system willreproduce the original
recordingfaithfully.Inthevideoworld,matrixisusedtoprovideasetof equationsthat
relatetothereproducingcharacteristicsofvarioussetsofphosphorsthatareusedinTV
picturetubes. Thisfunction (likeotherson thecamera)hasrootsin theearlydaysof
colortelevisionwhentechnologyandeconomicsdeterminedthatsomecircuitswouldbe
placedinthecameraandothersinthereceiver.Aswithdetail,matrixcanproveuseful
forabroadcastorvideoonlyproduction.Useofthematrixfora"film out"productionis
cautioned since the film outdevice willnotbe able to recreate the propercolorspace
from the camerato match the film emulsion (the equation isno longervalid).Ifcolor
manipulation isdesired,itisrecommended thatone shoota testusing the matrix to
createtheappropriatelook.Thistestcanbeusedasaguideforthefacilitythatwillbe
doingthefilm out.
