1. General Information
The following operating manual describes lifting clamps
and grabs and their operation. For individual questions
please contact PFEIFER Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH in
DE-87700 Memmingen / Germany.
NOTE: Lifting clamps and grabs are referred
to as lifting devices in the following.
This operation manual uses international standard SI
units of measurements.
It is absolutely essential that this operating manual
be read by the user prior to commissioning of the
lifting device. The operation company must ensure
that all users have read and understood this
operating manual.
The operating manual contains important information
regarding maintenance and servicing work and
must thus be kept the vicinity of the lifting device
(obligation to preserve records!).
If the lifting device changes hand, this operating manual
must be transferred to the new operating company.
PFEIFER Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH owns the copy-
right for these technical documents. This operating
manual must not be made available to third parties or
competitors of PFEIFER Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH.
Subject to alterations. All data and information has been
compiled to the best of our knowledge. However, no
liability can be derived from this. Use, reproduction and
opying of this document is only allowed under permis-

4.1 Denominations

4.2 Authorised Intended Use
The lifting device is used solely to lift and turn loads
according to the charts of usage and materials and
must only be used for the operations mentioned in the
chart of usage.
The load surface must be dry and clean, i.e. free of
dirt, mill scale, grease, ice, snow, coatings such as
paintings etc.
The maximum load capacity is to be found on the type
plate. Never exeed the load capacity. Consider attach-
ment and inclination angles, as these may cause a
reduction in the carrying capacity.
The maximum load dimensions are to be found on the
type plate. The gripping range mentioned states the
admissible minimum and maximum thickness of the
load at the attachment point. The lifting device must
not be used for any other dimensions! Consider the
minimum load weight in the chart of usage!
The lifting device is attached to the crane hook by
means of the suspension eye and a chain sling. The
load is taken up the gripping elements in case of lifting
clamps, in case of grabs by the gripping legs.
Lifting clamps with serrated gripping elements penetrate
into the material and leave marks on the load surface.
Lifting clamps with smooth gripping elements work
without penetrating into the load.
The lifting device can be used at a crane in a hall.
2. Liability and Warranty
All information in this operating manual has been
compiled under consideration of valid regulations,
the state of the art and our extensive knowledge and
experience.
NOTE: PFEIFER Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH
is not liable for damage resulting from the
circumstances listed below:
•Non-observance of the operating manualg
•Use that is contrary to regulation and/ or
impermissible use of the lifting device
•Operation by insufficiently trained
personnel
•Improper maintenance and repair works
•Arbitrary modifications to the lifting
device (grinding, welding, drilling, parts
installation, etc.)
•Use of spare parts of other manufacturers
3. Explanation of Symbols
Important safety-related notes are identified with
symbols and signal words. The specified notes must
absolutely be observed to prevent accidents,
personal injury and property damage.
The local accident prevention regulations and general
safety provisions applicable at the place of use must
also be observed.

4.4 Responsibility of the Operating
Company
The operating company is subject to legal obligations
regarding occupational safety. The operating company
must ensure that
•All additional work instructions and safety notices
arising from a risk assessment of the workstations at
the place of use of the lifting device are set down in
an operating manua.
•All users have read and understood the operating
manual.
•The responsibilities for operation, maintenance, and
inspection are clearly regulated and defined.
•All maintenance and inspection intervals are observed
and the lifting device is thus always intechnically
perfect condition.
4.5 Personnel Requirements /
User Groups
Everyone assigned with using the lifting device must
have read and understood the operating manual before
starting work.
People whose capability to respond is influenced by
drugs, alcohol or medication must not work on or near
the device.
The following user groups may carry out the respective
task referenced:

User group definitions:
•A person is considered to be a specialist, who, based
on his technical training, knowledge and experience,
as well as his knowledge of applicable regulations,
is able to appraise the assigned work task and
recognise potential hazards.
•A person is considered to be trained, who has
received instruction on the assigned tasks and
potential hazards associated with improper behaviour,
and has been briefed as necessary on the required
safety equipment and protective measures.
•A layperson is considered to be anyone not qualified
as a specialist or trained person.
The following is PROHIBITED if not explicitly planned:
•Use outside of a temperature range from
–20 °C to +100°C).
•Use in areas susceptible to fire or heavy dust
accumulation or in potentially explosive atmospheres.
•Use in environments with hazardous oils, acids,
fumes, gases, dusts, radiation, etc.
•Private use.
The lifting device must be operated, maintained and
repaired only in a technically perfect condition by
sufficiently trained personnel (also see under „User
groups“ chapter)
NOTE: Commissioning, operation, service
and repair of any kind on the lifting device
must be carried out only on the basis of the
procedural instructions prescribed in the
operating manual
Personal protective equipment must be used according
to the workplace risk analysis (also refer to the DGUV
(German Statutory Accident Insurance) REGULATION
100-500)! We recommend using a hardhat, safety
shoes and safety gloves.
4.3 Predictable Misuse
The use of the lifting device outside of the authorised
intended use is considered to be an improper use and
thus represents misuse. Risks may occur due to
misuse. Such misuse are:
•The slinging of loads to load binding means such
as binding wires, lashing straps etc .
•The pulling, dragging or tearing of loads.
•An exceeding of the maximum permissible load
capacity or maximum load dimensions.
•The failure to observe the minimum load weight.
•The transport of radioactive materials.
•The lifting or transport of persons.
•The lifting of a load overhead persons or the
safety area.
•Arbitrary modifications (grinding, welding,
drilling etc.).
•Throwing, dropping or toppling the lifting device.

WARNING: Danger of accidents in case of
insufficient qualifications and/or incorrect
operation of the lifting device!
The lack of knowledge about proper operation
can result in damage to the lifting device or
present a risk to the users.
This can result in death, severe injury, or
property damage.
•All activities must be performed by
qualified personnel only!
•Laypersons must not perform the activities!
•Regularly check the work tasks from a
safety perspective!
5. Commissioning / Inspection
before any use
WARNING: Do not use the lifting device in
case of wear or defects! Criteria for wear see
under www.pfeifer.info.
The lifting device must not be put into service without
the type plate or with illegible load capacity information.
If the type plate has been lost or if the information is
illegible, do not put the lifting device back into service
until it has been re-identified and marked accordingly.
Note the max. carrying capacity and the gripping range
(information on the type plate)!
Before every use check the lifting device for functio-
nality, damage (cracks, deformations etc.) and wear
(especially welding seams, drillings, dowel pins,
gripping elements, gripping legs, suspension eye,
crack initiation). Never use overloaded, damaged or
worn lifting device.
Check all moveable parts for freedom of movement.
WARNING: Danger of accidents due to a
falling lifting device and/or load!
The usage of a lifting device which is no
longer fully functional or useable can lead to
failure, slippage, toppling or crashing of the
load.
This can result in death or severe injury.
•Moveable parts must run smoothly and
be sufficiently attached and secured,
if necessary (bolt with cotter pin!)
•Damaged and worn parts should be
replaced immediately with original
replacement parts!
The gripping elements / gripping legs must be dry and
clean, i.e. free of dirt, mill scale, grease, ice, snow,
painting etc.
Check the gripping elements for wear and defects. They
must be sharp. If the marks of the gripping elements are
no longer clearly visible and sharp-edged or if skidding
marks appear, the lifting device must be inspected by a
specialist, components which are no longer fully func-
tional must be exchanged by original spare parts.
Check the safety lock for wear and defects. It must be
opened and closed with easy effort (effortless). If the
locking mechanism works tigthly, the lifting device must
be checked by a specialist.
Check the spring. When the safety lock is closed, the
spring must be clearly and perceptibly tensioned.
In case of heavy dirt, the lifting device must be
cleaned.
Always mend defects in the coating to prevent
corrosion.
After decommissioning, the lifting device or its
parts have to be disposed of according the the legal
regulations.
6. Regular Inspections
The lifting device must be checked by a technical expert
at intervals not exceeding once a year. For operations
at high levels of demand, the technical expert must
shorten the inspection intervals accordingly. Inspections
or maintenance of the lifting device are to be carried out
by a technical expert either on site or at our facilities.
For repair, we offer original PFEIFER spare parts. After
repair or longer idle period, the lifting device must be
re-checked!
Only the use of original spare parts in accordance with
their intended purpose will guarantee the functionality of
the lifting device. Please consult the graphic illustration
in the relevant spare part lists to identify the spare
parts exactly. The spare part lists as well as the
inspection plans can be downloaded from our website
www.pfeifer.info.
PFEIFER grants you a three-year warranty period
(except wearing parts).

7. General Operation Notes
Always use the lifting device corresponding to the
intended use and in proper shape, keep to the maxi-
mum load dimensions and mind their material hard-
ness (also see chart of usage and materials chart). If
applicable, mind the minimum load acc. to the chart
of usage. Do no overload the lifting device. [1]
Mind the admissible attachment and inclination angles,
as they may result in a reduction of the carrying capac-
ity given! Also see information on models.
Never engage the lifting device directly to crane hooks
but connect them via a suitable lifting sling. Mind the
carrying capacity of the chain sling. Only use load
hooks / crane hooks with safety catches. [2]
Never transport the load with open safety lock. Never
stop the safety lock functioning. [3]
Attach the lifting device completely and all the way to
the load. Exception: Vertical clamps for lifting and
turning of sheets /girders need a free space of 3 –5 mm
between stop and load edge as it can hardly or not at
all be loosened after the load has been set down.
Close the locking mechanism. The load must not slip
after lifting. If the load slips, set down the load and
attach anew.
For lateral attachment of the clamps ensure the
inclination angle to be only as large as the gripping
elements are fully engaged to the load and are still far
enough from the load edge.
Only attach lifting clamps to plane parallel surfaces
(no conical surfaces, no circular tubes, no checker or
bulb plates, no perforated plates)! [4]
Do not grab into shear or clamping positions in order
to avoid injuries.
Always attach the lifting devices in the load centre of
gravity. Avoid inclined suspended loads. In case of
inclination, set down the load and re-attach the lifting
device.
Employ the number of lifting devices necessary to
stabilise the load. In order to avoid oscillation for longer
and especially thin loads, we recommend using pairs
of lifting devices in a 2-legged chain sling (Watch out
for inclination angles!) or at a spreader beam. Ensure
an even distribution of loads and an even charge to all
the lifting devices used. For lateral attachment, the lifting
devices are to be engaged at the same opposite height.
The lifting devices employed must all have the same
lifting capacity. [5]
Avoid oscillation, lifting and lowering in jerks as well as
collisions with other loads. Ensure for enough free
space to surrounding obstacles.
Never pull sheets from the bottom of a stack.
Never pull away jammed loads. [6]
Only lift single loads with lifting devices intended for
lifting vertically positioned loads. [7]
Is the clamp intended for lifting sheet stacks, must
these be stacked evenly..
Never transport anything hurriedly. Never stand in the
danger zone. Never lift loads over persons or over
safety areas. Always drive the load slowly, evenly and
without oscillation. [8]
Never open or remove the crane hook safety catch or
the safety lock at the lifting device or take down the
lifting device from the load before the load is in a stable
resting position.
No not leave the loads unattended in the crane hook for
longer periods of time.
It is not allowed to use lifting devices without safety
lock at travelling fork lifters, mobile cranes etc.
WARNING: Danger of accident by crash of
the lifting device and/or the load!
Raddled or misused lifting device can lead to
failure and/or slipping, tilting or crash of the
load.
This can lead to death or severe injuries or
damage machines or other equipments.
•Keep to the operating instructions!
•Immediately exchange defect or worn parts
by original spare parts!

7.1 Use of Lifting Device
•Open the safety lock.
•Positon the lifting device vertically above the load
centre of gravity.
•Push the lifting device all the way onto the load
(attention: lifting clamps for turning the loads need a
free space of 3– 5mm)!
•Close the safety lock.
•Slowly introduce the lifting / turning procedure.
•If th load slips, set down the load and re-attach or
check gripping elements!
•After the process set down the load, relieve the lifting
device, open the safety catch and take the lifting
device down from the load.
7.2 Safety Locks

1. Lock closed
When the lock is closed, there is a spring tension on the
upper gripping element so that the lifting clamp cannot
loosen from the load even under unintentional relief of
the load. By opening the safety lock and pushing the
shackle into the clamp body, the lifting clamp can be
loosened from the load.
2. Lock open and closed
When the lock is closed, there is a spring tension on the
upper gripping element so that the lifting clamp cannot
loosen from the load even under unintentional relief of
the load. When the lock is open, the upper gripping
element is held back in the clamp body. So the lifting
clamp can be attached and loosened from the load
more easily.
3. Wedge screw
The gripping elements are opened and closed manually
by operating the wedge screw (check that the screw
moves easily). The wedge screw must be easily
accessible for tightening. Ensure the clamp to be firmly
attached. The gripping elements must be dry and clean,
i.e. free of dirt, mill scale, lubricants, ice, snow,
coatings such as paintings etc.
See chart of torque as per model information.
4. Lifting devices without safety lock
Position of the lifting device when attaching it to the
load with unstressed slings. During lifting, absolutely
avoid relief of the lifting device. It is not allowed to use
lifting devices without safety lock at travelling fork
lifters, mobile cranes etc.
For safety reasons, the gripping elements must always
be in contact with the load.

For turning procedures, the safety lock must always
be attached on the upper side of the load. In order to
loosen the lifting device after a 180° turnover
procedure, ensure enough free space (i.e. by means of
timber in logs).

Safety lock
The gripping elements are opened by pulling the lock up
so that the lifting clamp can be attached or loosened
from the load easily. Locks automatically by releasing
the safety lock.
The safety lock tightens itself automatically.

The wedge screw must always be at the bottom
(facing the floor) when the clamp is being attached at
the load.
Push the lifting shackle completely into the body of
the clamp before tightening the wedge screw. Tighten
the wedge screw until both gripping elements are
positioned parallel to the load. Give it another ¾ turn
with a wrench.

When the clamp is opened, the gripping elements are
adjusted to the thickness of the load +1 to +2 mm
and fixed with a lock nut. New load thicknesses will
require the gripping elements to be re-adjusted.
The gripping elements must be whetted with an
abrasive paper (grain size 60) every day before the
first use of the clamp.

Slings with reeved ropes are no admissible.
To ensure all slings are evenly loaded, a compensating
rocker may be necessary in case of a four-sling
suspension, depending on the load.
In all sling suspension applications, the attachment
points of the individual slings must be above the load
centre of gravity.

lifting capacity of the clamp. Watch out for stronger
forces in the lifting device caused by pulling at an angle.
For a perfect relative strength we recommend a
suspension angle of 30°.

Safety lock
Locking spring clip with handle in order to avoid un-
intentional opening when the lifting device is relieved.
WARNING: When releasing the spring, watch
out for your fingers and hands – danger of
blowing and crushing!
When the grab is open it can be locked with the hold-
open lever, so that the load can be attached more easily.
For design-related reasons, the grabs with the item nos.
114040 and 114049 are supplied without a safety
device.

10.10 Models SZ and SZA (Rail Grabs)

Open and close the blocking lever.
Safety lock with double function: for hold-open and as
lock closed under load, in order to provide safe gripping
even when the load is overturning, i.e. the grab never
lets go unintentionally.

Opening by pressing the palms of both hands on the
upper pin while holding the green handle.

10.11 Models B 1 and B 2
Safety lock
Fluted gripping surfaces contacting beam!
Ensure exact assembly of the two side parts. The two
side plates have to be fastened firmly with safety
screws in the drilled holes. Insert the steel wedge
crosswise between the girder and the clamp body with
the fluted side in contact with the girder. Hammer the
wedge in so that it cannot slip.
NOTE: Hammer the wedge in further if
necessary after the load has been lifted.
Make sure the wedge is always fastened
firmly!
B1 B2
The gripping range given corresponds to the minimum
and maxiumim width of flange at the attachment point.
Application only as a fastening clamp (B1) or as a
moveable fastening clamp (B2) on permanently installed
girders.

1. Allgemeine Informationen
Die folgende Betriebsanleitung beschreibt Tragklemmen
und Zangen und deren Bedienung. Bei Fragen wenden
Sie sich bitte an die PFEIFER Seil- und Hebetechnik
GmbH in 87700 Memmingen/Deutschland.
HINWEIS: Tragklemmen und Zangen werden
nachfolgend als Lastaufnahmemittel
bezeichnet.
Diese Betriebsanleitung verwendet die international
genormten SI-Maßeinheiten.
Die Betriebsanleitung ist vor der erstmaligen Inbe-
triebnahme des Lastaufnahmemittels unbedingt vom
Anwender zu lesen. Der Betreiber muss sicherstellen,
dass alle Anwender die Betriebsanleitung gelesen
und verstanden haben.
Die Betriebsanleitung enthält wichtige Hinweise zu
Wartungs- und Instandhaltungsarbeiten und ist
deshalb in der Nähe des Lastaufnahmemittels aufzu-
bewahren (Aufbewahrungspflicht!).
Wechselt das Lastaufnahmemittel seinen Betreiber,
ist die Betriebsanleitung an die neuen Betreiber weiter-
zugeben.
Das Urheberrecht dieser Betriebsanleitung verbleibt bei
der PFEIFER Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH. Die Betriebs-
anleitung darf Dritten bzw. Mitbewerbern der PFEIFER
Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH nicht zugänglich gemacht
werden.
Änderungen sind vorbehalten. Alle Daten und Angaben
wurden nach bestem Wissen erstellt. Eine Verbindlich-
