shipping instructions in the section on service (Section 6.).

– The use of accessories not named in this operating manual
requires the prior approval of Pfeiffer Vacuum.

Cooling water connection.

The same unit and accessory parts have the same position
numbers in all illustrations.
The dry backing pump UniDry TM 50 can be equipped optional-
ly with a cooling water regulator. The regulator maintains the
pump at its optimum operating temperature. Cooling water
volume regulator DN 10 for neutral fluids (pH value 5...9).

3. Installation
3.1. Connecting The Cooling Water Unit
The cooling water unit should be connected in accordance
with local regulations. As far as possible, make the
connections so that the flow of the water is visible (with the
flowmeter).
Before installing the unit, check for cleanliness.
Foreign bodies on the valve seat can prevent
full closing.
The temperature of the cooling water at the
cooling water inlet port must be at least 10°C
and must not exceed 30°C (maximum). The
pressure of the cooling water at the inlet port
must be at least 0.3 bar higher than at the outlet
port. The maximum cooling water pressure of
10 bar must not be exceeded. If higher pressures are involved
a pressure reducing valve must be fitted.
Fitting Cooling Water Units
The customer must fit any cooling water unit which is contai-
ned in the delivery:
➡Remove the stopper from the 1/2“ inner thread on the
underside of the pump.
➡Screw the 90° angle piece 76 of the cooling water piping
into the 1/2” inner thread on the underside of the pump
adjacent to the exhaust flange.
– Seal the thread with a liquid sealing agent.
➡Make further pipe connections as shown in the illustration
(screw joint 85 is metallically sealed).
– Seal all other threads with a liquid sealing agent.
➡Place cooling water regulator sensor 88 in protective slee-
ve 83 and position in the boring provided in the pump
casing.
➡Secure sensor 88 in protective sleeve 83 with slotted secu-
ring nut 84 but only lightly tighten.
Position capilliary pipe 88.1 so that it does not
vibrate (danger of breakage from too much
vibration) and so that it cannot be damaged nor
squashed. The smallest sweep is 10mm. Do not
feed the capilliary pipe through areas where
temperatures higher than those at the sensor
are involved.
➡Screw hose nozzle 75 into the 1/2” inner thread for the
cooling water outlet in the pump casing.
➡
Secure the hoses for the cooling water in and outlets with
circlips and ensure firm seating.
➡ Fit the dirt trap in the inlet line.
➡ Use a screwdriver on the cooling water regulator adjusting
disk (position a) to set the required operating temperature.
The setting range is 40-85 °C (preset at works).

Water or some other appropriate medium can be used as the
coolant. The pump can be connected to the cold water mains
or to a cooling aggregate (please see ”Accessories”).
The minimum requirements for the cooling water where
connection to the water mains is involved is that it must be
mechanically clean, optically clear, no turbidity, no sediment,
chemically neutral.
Oxygen content: max. 4 mg/kg
Chloride content: max. 100 mg/kg
Carbonate hardness: max. 10 ° dH
Consumption of potassium
permanganate: max. 10 mg/kg

4. Operations
4.1. Important Information
➡Before starting up the system check that all cooling water
lines have been connected correctly.
➡Before starting up the system for the first time or after an
interruption to the supply of cooling water, the water
chambers of the pump must be vented (please see
Section 4.2.).
– The best version is the free flow of the cooling water
through a funnel. If this is not possible, a flowmeter
should be fitted in the line directly at the pump connec-
tion. In this respect a normal trade flow monitor or flow-
meter can be used.
➡Check the set operating temperature of the pump on the
cooling water regulator and correct as necessary (depen-
dent on the process).
If there is a danger of condensation, the pump
should be brought up to its operating
temperature before starting the process. The
temperature in accordance with the set value
on the cooling water regulating valve (please
see Section 4.3.).
CAUTION
Protect the valve against frost otherwise dama-
ge or breakage arising from the expansion of
the ice is unavoidable.
4.2. Venting The Cooling system
Lay the drain line higher than the valve to
prevent the valve running (danger of calcificati-
on).
➡Before starting up the system for the first time or after an
interruption to the supply of cooling water (for example
after maintenance work): open the cooling water supply
and, using a screwdriver, open the flow on the cooling
water regulator for approximately 2 minutes in order to
vent the system.
- To do this place the screwdriver (position b) under the
head of the vent screw and press in the direction of the
arrow.

4.3. Adjusting The Cooling Water Regula-
tor
The set value must always be below the boiling
point of the cooling medium being used. The
boiling point is dependent on the height above
sea level and on the type of cooling medium.
➡Adjust the cooling water regulator by using a screwdriver
(position a) to turn the setting disk 90 to the required
operating temperature. The setting range is 40-85 °C
(preset at works).
– By turning the setting disk in the direction of the arrow
head the rate of flow reduces (increased operating
temperature) and turning in the opposite direction
increases the rate of flow (decreased operating tempe-
rature).

5. Maintenance
If silting occurs, the valve part can be flushed vigorously
when the cooling water regulating valve is fitted. The bolt
protruding from the under part of the valve casing should be
levered out with a screwdriver (position b). In this way the
valve is forced open and the strong flow of water flushes
away any dirt particles and also rapidly cools the pump.
If a dirt trap has been fitted it should be cleaned at intervals
depending on the level of dirt in the water.
Where the operating temperature of the pump
is at maximum, the valve should only be flushed
for a short time to prevent rapid cooling of the
pump casing in comparison with the rotors.
– It is better to flush when the pump is switched off.
Take care with hot cooling water running out of
the cooling water outlet.
The temperature can be as high as 80°C; even
once the pump has been switched off.

CAUTION
Please Note:
The numbers on the adjustment scale denote the temperature
values at which the regulator opens. To obtain a prescribed
temperature value in the system to be regulated, the regulator
must be set to a scale value which, depending on the utilizati-
on factor of the cooling water flow regulator, is from 5-10K
below the set value.

6. Service
Please get in touch with your local Pfeiffer Vacuum represen-
tatives if there are any questions regarding contamination.
Decontaminate units before returning or
possible disposal. Do not return any units which
are microbiologically, explosively or radio-
actively contaminated.
Returning Contaminated Units
If contaminated units have to be returned for
maintenance/repair, the following instructions concerning
shipping must be followed without fail:
➡Neutralise the unit by flushing with nitrogen or dry air.
➡Seal all openings to the air.
➡Seal unit or unit in suitable protective foil.
➡Ship units only in appropriate transport containers.
Repair orders are carried out according to our
general conditions of sale and supply.
➡If repairs are necessary, please send the unit together
with a short damage description to your nearest Pfeiffer
Vacuum Service Center

Do Make Use Of Our Service Facilities
In the event that repairs are necessary, a number of options
are available to you to ensure any system down time is kept to
a minimum:
– Have the unit repaired on the spot by our Pfeiffer Vacuum
Service Engineers;
– Return the individual components to the manufacturer for
repairs;
– Replace individual components with a new value
exchange units.
Local Pfeiffer Vacuum representatives can provide full
details.
Before Returning:
➡Dismantle all accessories.
➡Drain cooling liquid.
➡Attach a clearly visible notice: “Free of contamination” (to
the unit being returned, the delivery note and accompany-
ing paperwork).
Harmful substances" are substances and preparations as
defined in current legislation. Pfeiffer Vacuum will carry out
the decontamination and invoice this work to you if you have
not attached this note. This also applies where the operator
does not have the facilities to carry out the decontamination
work. Units which are contaminated microbiologically, explo-
sively or radioactively cannot be accepted as a matter of
principle.
Fill out the service request and the declaration on
contamination
➡Download the forms “Service Request” and “Declaration
on Contamination”.1)
➡Fill out the “Service Request” form and send it by fax or
e-mail to your Pfeiffer Vacuum service address.
➡Include the confirmation on the service request from Pfeif-
fer Vacuum with your shipment.
➡Fill out the contamination declaration and enclose it in the
shipment (required!).
