General set up
1Mount the fixture in the required position. The integral yoke can
act as a floor stand or hanger.
Important

Using the menu

DMX links and termination
ThissectionprovidesusefuladviceforgainingreliableoperationfromyourDMX
installation:
• Usegoodqualityexibletwistedpaircablethathasanominalcharacteristic
impedanceof120ohms.Microphonecableshavealowerimpedanceanda
highercapacitance,whichcanleadtodataerrors.
• Useadaisychainarrangementtolinkxturestogether,sothattheoutputof
onextureisconnectedtotheinputofthenext.
• Connectnomorethan32devicestoasingleDMXrun.Iffurtherxtures
areneeded,thenuseaDMXboostertoallowupto32morexturestobe
attached.
• NeversplitaDMXcabletoformtwobranches(aY-split).Ifseparatebranches
arerequired,useapoweredDMXsplitter.
• Ensurethatthedevicesateachendofthedaisychainarebothterminated
usinga120ohmresistor(usuallycontainedwithinaseparateXLRconnector
thathasnocable-theresistorformsalinkbetweenpins2and3).Control
desks are usually internally terminated.
Itispossibletogetawaywithbreakingsomeoftheaboverules,particularlyon
smallerinstallationsthathaveshortcablerunsandfewxtures.However,results
canbeunpredictableandproblemswillinevitablyhityouattheveryworsttime:

PixelSmartprovidestwodimmercurveoptionstodetermineexactly
howthedigitalvaluesreceivedviatheDMXlinkareconvertedinto
emitterintensities.Thedimmercurvesettingaffectsallmodes.
Toalterthedimmercurve,gotothePERSmenu,choosetheDIMR
option,selecttherequiredsettingandthenpressthe buttontosave.
Thedimmercurveoptionsareasfollows:
• FINEProvidesasquarelawdimmercurvewithfastreactionto
changingDMXvalues.
• TUNG Alters the dimming response to closely emulate the smooth
thermallagactionofstandardtungstenbulbs.TheTUNG setting
canbeusedwithalloperationmodes.Note:Thismodecanaf-
fectthewaythatfastchasesequencesappear.
Changing the dimmer curve via DMX
(PERS > DTYP)
PixelSmartallowsyoutochangethedimmingresponsecurvere-
motelyviaDMXcontrol.Whenenabled,the‘dimmertype’channel
willbeaddedasthelastchannelforthexture,aftertheMaster
Intensitychannels,ifenabled.ThedimmercurveviaDMXsetting
affectsthefollowingmodes:DMX,16BT,4+E,5+E and 61+E.
Toenableremote‘dimmertype’control:GotothePERSmenu,
choose the DTYP option and change its setting to ON.

Using master mode to drive other units
PixelSmartcancontrolanynumberofotherPixelRangexturesvia
DMXlinks,withouttheneedforacontroldesk.
1 Setthisunitasmaster(PERS > DATA > MAST)andensureall
others are set to slave(PERS > DATA > SLAV).Connectall
xturesviaDMXdaisy-chain.
Note:Don’t forget to terminate the devices at either end of the
chain - see ‘DMX links and termination’.
2 SeteachslavetoMode > DMX.
3 Setthemastertoeithercreatechasesorstaticcolours:
Chases:SelectMode > EF m and then use PROG > C1 and
C2tocreatetherequiredeffects(seepage2).
Static colours:SelectMode > MANU and then use MAN >
RED,GRN,BLUE and WHiT to mix the colour.
4 SeteachslaveDMXaddress(usingADDR > DMX)accordingto

Troubleshooting

checktheDMXcable(s)andthedeskoutput.
• Erratic operation during DMX control: Check that the final fixture
withintheDMXdaisychainiscorrectlyterminatedwitha120
ohm terminator plug.
• Erratic operation during DMX control: Check that the selected
MODEmatchesthepersonalitybeingusedonthecontroldesk.
• Erratic operation during DMX control: EnsurethatonlyoneDMX
deviceinthedaisychainissetasmaster.
• Rapid colour/intensity changes not occuring:Checkwhetherthe
tungstendimmermodeisselected(PERS > dIMR > TUNG).This
wouldslowthereactiontimesoftheemittersandcouldmeanthat
rapidchangesareblendedintoeachother.ChoosetheFINE
dimmermodetoachieveafasterreaction.
• Standalone chase effects not working: Check that a chase has
beenprogrammedusingPROG >C1 and/or PROG >C2 and
also that MODE >EF M is selected. Check also that PROG >
LEVL is not set at zero.
• Standalone RGBW mixing not working: Check that one or more
colourvalueshavebeensetwithinMAN section and also that the
MODE >MANU is selected.
