System Overview
Introduction
The PSA7000 offers a 17.7" short-depth 2U foot-print with advanced air flow thermal control and two rear hot-
swappable drivebays. Below is the front and rear view of the system. The disk drives (HDD1 and HDD2) and
power supplies (PWR1 and PWR2) are accessible from the rear. For added system security, the USB port has
been disabled.

LED Control Panel
There are two buttons located on the front of the chassis: a reset button and a power on/off button. The reset button is
used to reboot the system. The main power switch activates or deactivates power to the server system.
The control panel includes a power on/off button and a reset button.
Power: The main power switch is used to apply or remove power from the power supply to the server system. Turning
off the system power with this button removes the main power but keeps a standby power supplied to the system.
Therefore, you must unplug the system before servicing.
Reset: The reset button is used to reboot the system.
The control panel displays six LEDs to monitor the system.
Information LED: Alerts an operator of several states, as noted in the table below:
Status
Description
Continuously on and red
An overheat condition has occurred. This may be caused by the cable
congestion.
Blinking red (1Hz)
Fan failure; check for an inoperative fan.
Blinking red (0.25Hz)
Power failure; check for a non-operational power supply.

NIC1 (GLAN1): Associated with the Management port. It indicates the network activity when flashing.
NIC2 (GLAN2): Unused. Will always be off.
HDD: Indicates IDE channel activity or SATA drive activity when flashing.
Power: Indicates the power is being supplied to the system power supply. This LED should be illuminated when
the system is operating.
Power Failure: When this LED flashes, it indicates a power failure in the power supply.

SATA Drives
The system uses hot swappable SATA drives.
There are two drives:
•
HDD1
•
HDD2
Each drive has two LEDs.
Green: When illuminated, this green LED (on the SATA drive carrier) indicates drive activity.
Red: The red LED indicates a SATA drive failure. If one of the SATA drives fail, you should be notified by your
system management software.
Note: The unit will only support two HDDs. The unit will not recognize the third drive if installed.
LCD Display
The LCD supports a Display mode (default) and Menu mode. The Display mode describes the current state of
the system, such as normal state or error conditions (example, fan speed and overheat).
Use the directional buttons to access the Menu mode and find the device information.

11
LCD Modes
The LCD has two modes:
•
Display mode—The default. The LCD goes into Display mode after boot-up is complete.
•
Menu mode—It is activated when the user presses either the Enter button or any of the arrow
buttons. A single press of those buttons will change to Menu mode and load the default menu selection
(see Menu mode designs).
If the user presses the Cancel button, the LCD immediately changes back to Display mode and shows the
appropriate state. If the LCD is already in Display mode and the user presses Cancel, then nothing happens. The
LCD remains in Display mode. If the LCD is in Menu mode and the user does not press any button for more
than two minutes, then the LCD changes back to Display mode.

12
Display Mode
In the Display mode, LCD is either set to NORMAL or shows a label that describes an error condition.
If all systems are functioning normally, then the LCD shows NORMAL. The second line in the NORMAL state is
used to show whether the appliance is configured as part of a cluster.
The valid states are Clustering OFF and Clustering ON.

13
Error Conditions
If more than one error condition is detected, all error conditions will be displayed in sequence with a two seconds’
pause before switching to the next one.
All error conditions are cleared prior to return to the NORMAL state. Error conditions include:
•
Overheat
•
Fan Failure
•
RAID Errors

14
Menu Mode
Pressing Enter or any Arrow key puts the LCD into the Menu mode.
Pressing the Right and Left arrows keys cycles through the available system configuration data, starting with the
Internal IP and going clockwise.
Pressing Cancel at any point exits to the Display mode.
If Internal IP and External IP are not used, they will show Disabled instead of showing the IP address.

Console and Initial Configuration
Connect Console and Network
1.
Do not power on the system yet. First, get the RJ45 to DB9 serial console cable.
Note: A DB9 to USB adapter is not provided.
2.
Connect the RJ45 end of the cable to the appliance port labeled CONSOLE and the DB9 end to a laptop.
Additionally, connect a network cable from the INT port on the appliance to a switch port:
3.
On the laptop, configure a terminal emulation utility, such as HyperTerminal or PuTTY, to use these set-
tings: 9600 speed, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no flow control.
To find your COM port in Windows, go to Start > Search > Device Manger > Ports (COM & LPT)
> USB Serial Port (COM#).

Power On the System
Do this:
1.
Connect the AC power cables from a power source to both power supplies. An alarm will sound until
both power supplies are connected.
2.
The appliance will begin powering-on automatically when the first power cable is connected. Both power
cables must be connected for normal operations.
3.
Observe the status LEDs (where applicable) on each power supply faceplate. If an AC power supply is
correctly installed and functioning normally, the AC OK LED lights steadily, and the PS FAIL LED is not
lit.
Note: After powering off a power supply, wait for at least 60 seconds before turning it back on. After
powering on a power supply, wait for at least 60 seconds before turning it off.
After a power supply is powered on, it can take up to 60 seconds for status indicators—such as the status
LEDs on the power supply and the show chassis command display—to indicate that the power supply is
functioning normally. Ignore error indicators that appear during the first 60 seconds.
Configure Basic Settings
When you boot an unconfigured PSA7000, you need to enter basic network and machine information through the
console to make it accessible to the network. Based on your selection of personality, a different binary will boot up in
the system. After entering these settings, you can continue configuring the PSA7000 through the administrator Web
console.
During this basic setup process, you define the “personality” of the PSA7000. For example, you can set up the
PSA7000 to act as a Pulse Connect Secure device, Pulse Policy Secure device, or Pulse One Service.
Note: If PSA7000 is set up as Pulse Connect Secure or Pulse Policy Secure device, it can be switched
to any other personality anytime.
But, setting up PSA7000 as Pulse One is irreversible; you cannot switch to Pulse Connect Secure or
Pulse Policy Secure builds later.
The installation process may take up to 20 minutes. Do this to perform the basic setup:
1. Enter the number corresponding to the personality for which you want to configure the PSA7000.

20
PSA7000 Hardware Guide
2. For example, if your screen looks like this:
Press 1to install the Pulse Connect Secure package. Press 2to install the Pulse Policy Secure package. Press 3to
install the Pulse One Service.
3. Enter yto proceed, and then enter yto accept the license terms (or enter rto read the license first).
4. Follow the directions in the console, and enter the machine information for which you are prompted,
including the following:
•
IP address of the internal port (you configure the external port through the administrator Web console
after initial configuration)
•
Network mask
•
Default gateway address
•
Primary DNS server address
•
Secondary DNS server address (optional)
•
Default DNS domain name (for example, acmegizmo.com)
•
WINS server name or address (optional)
•
Administrator username
•
Administrator password
•
Common machine name (for example, connect.acmegizmo.com)
•
Organization name (for example, Acme Gizmo, Inc.)
•
Enter random text (used for authentication certificate)
After you perform the basic setup, you are ready to license the software, verify accessibility, and complete
the configuration process through the PSA7000 administrator Web console.
