3.1OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS
• Ensure that the instructions in this book
arereadandfullyunderstood.
• Nopersonshouldbeallowedtooperate
this machine unless they are fully
acquainted with all the controls and the
safetyprocedures.
• Neverallowchildrenorpeopleunfamiliar
with these instructions to usethis
machine. Local regulations may restrict
theage of the operator.
3.2SAFETYSIGNS
• It is essential all safety labels are kept
legible, if they are missing or illegible they
must be replaced. If any part of the
machine is replaced and it originally
carried a safety label, a new label must be
affixedto the replacement part. New
safetylabelsareobtainablefrom
Ransomesdealers.
3.3STARTINGTHEENGINE
• Before starting the engine check that the
brakesareapplied,drivesareinneutral,
guards are in position and intact, and
bystandersare clearof the machine.
• Do not run the engine in a building without
adequateventilation.
3.4DRIVINGTHEMACHINE
• Beforemovingthemachine, checkto
ensure that all parts are in good working
order,payingparticularattentionto
brakes, tyres, steering and the security of
cuttingblades.
• Replace faulty silencers, mow only in
daylightor goodartificial light
• AlwaysobservetheHighwayCodebothon
andoff the roads.Keep alertand aware at
all times. Watch out for traffic when
crossingornearroadways.
• Stopthebladesrotatingbeforecrossing
surfacesotherthangrass.
• Rememberthatsomepeoplearedeafor
blind and that children and animals can
beunpredictable.
• Keeptravellingspeedslowenoughforan
emergencystoptobeeffectiveandsafe
at all times, in any conditions.
• Removeoravoidobstructionsinthearea
to be cut, thus reducing the possibility of
injurytoyourselfand/or bystanders.
• Whenreversing, take special care to
ensure that the area behind is clear of
obstructionsand/or bystanders. DO
NOTcarrypassengers.
• Keep in mind that the operator or user is
responsibleforaccidentsorhazards
occurringtootherpeopleortheir
property.
• When the machine is to be parked,
storedorleftunattended,lowerthe
cutting means unless the transport locks
arebeingused.
• Whilemowing, always wearsubstantial
footwearandlong trousers. Do not
operatetheequipmentwhenbarefootor
wearingopensandals.
• Checkthegrasscatcher frequently for
wearor deterioration. Afterstriking a
foreignobject. Inspect. the lawnmower
fordamageandmakerepairsbefore
restartingandoperatingtheequipment.
• Ifthe machinestarts to vibrate
abnormally,check immediately.
3.5TRANSPORTING
• Ensure that the cutting units are
securelyfastenedin the transport
position. Do not transport with cutting
mechanismrotating.
• Drivethemachinewithdueconsideration
ofroadandsurface conditions, inclines
andlocalundulations.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcan
cause the rear wheels to lift.
• Remember that the stability of the rear of
the machine is reduced as the fuel is
used.
3.6LEAVINGTHEDRIVINGPOSITION
• Parkthemachineonlevelground.
• Beforeleavingthedrivingposition,stop
theengineandmakesureallmoving
parts are stationary. Apply brakes and
disengagealldrives.Removethestarter
key.

TAKEEXTRACAREWHENWORKINGON
SLOPES
• Localundulationsandsinkagewillchange
thegeneralslope.Avoidgroundconditions
which can cause the machine to slide.
• Keep machine speeds low on slopes and
duringtightturns.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcancause
the rear wheels to lift. Remember there is
no such thing as a “safe” slope.
• Travelongrassslopesrequiresparticular
care.
DONOTUSEONSLOPESGREATERTHAN15°
IMPORTANT: When working on any slope set the
weight transfer, if fitted to its maximum (+) setting.
3.8BLOCKEDCUTTINGCYLINDERS
• Stopthe engine and make sureall moving
partsare stationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Release blockages with care. Keep all parts
of the body away from the cutting edge.
Bewareof energyinthedrivewhichcan
causerotation when the blockage is released.
• Keepother people away from the cutting units
as rotation of one cylinder can cause the
others to rotate.
3.9ADJUSTMENTS,LUBRICATIONAND
MAINTENANCE
All vehicles
• Stopthe engine and make sureall moving
partsare stationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Readalltheappropriateservicinginstructions.
• Use only the replacement parts supplied by
theoriginalmanufacturer.
• When adjusting the cutting cylinders take
carenot toget handsand feet trapped when
rotatingcylinders.
• Makesure that otherpeople are nottouching
any cutting units, as rotation of one cylinder
can cause the others to rotate.
• Toreducethefirehazard,keeptheengine,
silencerandbatterycompartmentsfreeof
grass,leavesorexcessivegrease.
• Replacewornordamagedpartsforsafety.
• Whenworkingunderneathliftedpartsor
machines,makesure adequate supportIs
provided.
• Do not dismantle the machine without
releasingorrestrainingforceswhichcan
causeparts tomove suddenly.
• Donotalterenginespeedabovemaximum
quoted in Engine Specification. Do not
changetheenginegovernorsettingsor
overspeedtheengine. Operatingtheengine
at excessive speed may increase the hazard
ofpersonalinjury.
• Whenservicing batteries, DO NOT SMOKE,
and keep naked lights away.
• Do not place any metal objects across the
terminals.
Diesel & Petrol vehicles
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Addfuelbefore starting the
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Useafunnelwhen pouringfuelfroma can into
the tank.
• Do not fill the fuel tank beyond the bottom of
the filler neck.
• Replace all fuel tank and container caps
securely.
• Storefuelin containersspecifically designed
forthispurpose.
• Refueloutdoors only and do notsmoke while
refuelling.
• If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the
enginebut movethemachineawayfromthe
areaofspillageandavoidcreatinganysource
ofignitionuntilfuelvapourshavedissipated.
• Allow the engine to cool before storing in any
enclosure.
• Neverstoretheequipmentwithfuelinthe
tankinside a buildingwhere fumes mayreach
anopenflame orspark.
• If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should
bedoneoutdoors.
• Do not spill fuel onto hot components.
LPG vehicles
• Only trained & competent personnel in the
useof LPG as a road vehicle fuel are
allowed to work on LPG aspects of the
vehiclesengineorfuel system.
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Addfuelbefore starting the
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Vehicles should not be parked within 3
metersof any heat source,open flame or
othersourcesofignition.
• Vehiclesshouldnotbeservicedoveran
inspection pit
• If for any reason a leak in the fuel
systemis suspected, the vehicle
should be moved to an isolated area
clear of buildings & people and as far
as possible from drains and any source
of ignition.

IMPORTANT: Transport speed is for highway
use only. Never select transport speed
on grass areas or uneven or unsurfaced
roadsortracks.
TheoperatingInstructionsfortheCuttingUnitsare
contained in a separate Publication .
• Thefuelfillerbayonetonthevehicleshould
beinspected regularly for any signs of
damage.
• The gas used to fill the vehicle must be
sourcedfromareputablesupplier.
• If a machine starts to vent gas when it is
runningitshouldbemovedto an area
awayfrom anysources ofignition and
stopped. If it vents when static the
machine should not be started, all
potentialsources of ignition should be
inhibiteduntiltheventinghasstoppedand
thelocalRansomesJacobsendealer
shouldbe contacted.
• WherepracticalLPGfuelledvehicles
should be parked in the open air, in a well
ventilated position. Where this is not
reasonably practical due to lack of space,
security ect. vehicles should be parked
insidesuitablydesigned buildingsor

Hydraulic Fluid escaping under pressure
can penetrate skin and do serious
damage. Immediate medical assistance

Before releasing transport latches it is
important that all cutting units are fully
raised.
1. Park the machine on level ground.
2. With the engine running at operating
speed raise the cutting units to their
maximum position by operating lift
levers whilst seated in the driving
position.
3. Disengage drives, stop the engine and
make sure all moving parts are
stationary. Apply brakes and remove
the starter key.
4. transport latches can now be released.

5.3 ENGINE - Diesel: First 50 working hours
and every 200 working hours.
Change Engine Oil.
(a) Warm up the engine first and then shut it
off.Removeoildrainplugfromthebottom
of the crankcase and wipe it off.
(b) Replacethe drain plugandfill engine with
6.4 litres of oil.
Change Engine Oil Filter.
(a) Removesingle-unitcartridge(A)
(b) Apply thin coat of oil to cartridge gasket
beforeinstalling.
(c) Tightenfilter byhandonly.
(d) Check for oil leaks around the cartridge
gasket after engine is started.
LUBRICATION.
5.3.1 ENGINE - LPG: Every 200 working hours.
Change Engine Oil.
(a) Warm up the engine first and then shut it
off.Removeoildrainplugfromthebottom
of the crankcase and wipe it off.
(b) Replacethe drain plugandfill engine with
3.1 litres of oil.
Change Engine Oil Filter.
(a) Removesingle-unitcartridge(A)

2. Allowtank to drainand replaceplug.
3. Refill tank with 35 litres of Shell Tellus 46 Oil.
IMPORTANT-Whenevertheclosedlooptransmission
circuit has been broken into it is essential
that the circuit is flushed prior to use.
Absolutecleanlinessmustbeobservedwhen
filling the hydraulic tank. Oil must be filtered
througha25micronfilterbeforeenteringthe
hydraulictank.

conducting hydraulic system checks.

LubricationofDirectDriveHydraulicMotor(Every400
hours)
Lowerallcuttingunitsontolevelground.Beforeleaving
thedrivingposition, stop theengine and makesure all
movingpartsarestationary.Applybrakesand
disengagealldrives.removethestarterkey.Thedirect
drivehydraulicmotorcanberemovedfromthecutting
unitbyremovingthetwoscrewsandwashersholding
themotortothebearinghousing.Carefullywithdraw
themotor from the bearing housing,it is important not
tocontaminate themotor shaftor internalsplines of
thecutting cylinder.If for any reason theyare
contaminated,theyshouldbecleanedbydegreasing.
Liberallylubricatethe motorandcylinder splineswith
ShellS7222grease beforereassembling.

Water Separator - If water is not removed from the
fuel,extensivedamage can bedone to thefuel
injection system.
1. Withengine off, open vent (A) at top of
waterseparator.
2. Opendrainvalve(B)atbottomofwater
seperator to allow any water to drain out.
3. If water is present, it will drain first. When
fuelemergesfromthevalve(B),closethe
valve.Closethevent(A).
NOTE: Failureto drain water reducesfuelfilter
efficiency.
Bleeding air from fuel system
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position
(don'tstartengine).
2. Openair vent (C)onside ofinjectionpump
to allow air to escape.
3. Retightenairvent.
4. Turnignitionto OFF.

Changing fuel filter
1. Unscrewfilter(A)fromfilterhead.
2. Removewater(B)separatorfromfilterand
discardfilter.
3. Fitwater separatorto newfilter and refit
filtertohead.
4. Bleed air from system as describe in section
5.6.
Storage
• Storepetrolordieselfuelinanapproved
container in a cool dry place.
• Keep the machine and fuel containers in a
lockedstorageplacetopreventtampering
and to keep children from playing with them.
• Donotstore fuelor petrol/diesel fuel
poweredequipmentinanyclosedarea
whereheating appliances, pilotlights or any
sort of open flame is present.
• Beforestoring, allow the engine to cool, and
drainfuelcompletely from fueltanksand
containers.
• Maximum safety and best mowing results
can only be expected if the mower is
maintainedandoperatedproperly.

5.12 END OF SEASON or when required
Change Hydraulic filter.
1. Lowerthecentre cutting unittoimprove
access.
2. Wipe filter bowl (A) and housing to remove
any dirt present.
3. Place a suitable drip tray on top of the centre
cutting unit.
4. Unscrewbowlandremoveoilfilterelement
and disposes of safely.
5. Replacewithnewelement.
6. Coat the top outside lip of the filter bowl with
a thin film of oil and refit filter bowl and
torque to 54Nm, as indicated on decal.
7. Start engine and idle for 15 seconds.
8. Stop engine, check filter bowl for leaks and
checkreservoir
NOTE: It is important that absolute cleanliness
isobservedwhenchangingthefilter.
Change Coolant.
1. Completelydrainthecoolingwaterfrom the
radiatordrainplug(B)andflush thecooling
systemwithflushing detergent.
2. Check for leaks or loose connections at the
radiator, cylinder head gasket, drain cock etc.
3. Mix antifreeze coolant and water at the
specifiedratiobeforepouringintotheengine.
Note: When topping up the cooling system fill with a
50/50solution.
Check Rear Wheel Bearings. (2WD Only)
1. Jack up, and securely chock the rear of the
machineusingpoints indicatoredin
section 5.2
2. Checkforfree-playinbearings,
3. Iffree-playisfoundremovedustcoverand
split pin and tighten castlated nut till all free-
play is eliminated.
