FDA Note on Personal Sound Ampliers (PSAPs)
PSAPs are intended to amplify environmental sound for non-hearing impaired consumers.
They are not intended to compensate for hearing impairment. Examples of situations in
which PSAPs typically are used include hunting (listening for prey), bird watching, listening
to lectures with a distant speaker, and listening to soft sounds that would be dicult to
hear (e.g., distant conversations, performances). Because PSAPs are not intended to
diagnose, treat, cure or mitigate disease and do not alter the structure or function of the
body, they are not devices as dened in the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. As such, there
is no regulatory classication, product code, or denition for these products. Furthermore,
there are no requirements for registration of manufacturers and listing of these products
with FDA.
However, PSAPs are subject to applicable provisions of the Radiation Control for Health
and Safety Act of 1968, under which FDA regulates electronic products that emit
sonic vibrations, such as sound amplication equipment. (See also 21 CFR 1000.15.)
Manufacturers of PSAPs must report defects and adverse events and take other measures
described in 21 CFR Part 1003. Manufacturers of PSAPs must also comply with the
requirements to repurchase, repair, or replace electronic products required under 21 CFR
Part 1004.
Discard button batteries carefully.
• Do not allow children to play with button batteries, and keep button batteries out of your
child’s reach.
• Caution hearing aid users to keep hearing aids and batteries out of the reach of children.
• Never put button batteries in your mouth for any reason as they are easily swallowed
accidentally.
• Always check medications before ingesting them. Adults have swallowed button
batteries mistaken for pills or tablets.
• Keep remotes and other electronics out of your child’s reach if the battery compartments
do not have a screw to secure them. Use tape to help secure the battery compartment.

the RCA Symphonix Personal Sound
Amplier! This device is designed to help
you hear better in certain situations, like
meetings, watching TV, or parties, where
other sounds may interfere. The RCA
Symphonix Personal Sound Amplier lets
you choose the level of amplication and
noise ltering you want.
Getting Started
The RCA Symphonix Personal Sound Amplier comes
with the following parts:
:: Earpiece (with thin right
tube and medium dome
attached)
:: A312 battery
:: Storage case
:: Thin left tube
:: Small dome
(for the wide tube)
:: Wide tube and dome
(provides more volume)
:: Large dome (for thin tubes)
Find the correct tube for your ear
The rst time you use RCA Symphonix, you’ll need to
nd the most comfortable t for your ear and for the
environments where you plan to use the earpiece. First of
all, you should make sure the correct tube is in for the ear
you want to wear the earpiece on.
The RCA Symphonix earpiece comes with three tubes:
• a thin tube for the right ear (pre-installed on the earpiece)
• a thin tube for the left ear
• a wide tube and dome that works on both ears
If you plan to use the earpiece on your right ear, great...the
earpiece is ready for you to try out. If you plan to use the
earpiece on your left ear, or if you want to use the earpiece
with the wide tube, you’ll need to take the tube for the right
ear o the earpiece and replace it with the other tube.

What is the wide tube for? The wide tube provides more
volume than the thin tubes. Before installing the wide tube,
we recommend that you try a thin tube at all three volume
levels (see page 7 for information on adjusting the volume).
If you want still more volume than the third level, follow the
instructions below to install the wide tube.
4. Find the other thin tube that came in the package.
Attach the dome to the end of this tube by pushing
the opening on the back of the dome gently onto
the end of the tube. Push the dome onto the end of
the tube as far as it will go. Make sure the dome is
securely fastened.
5. Before you attach the tube to the earpiece, make
sure the exposed part of the earpiece is clean of dust
or other particles.

To change the tube:
1. Find the part of the tube that
attaches to the earpiece.
Gently rotate this section of the
tube so that the sound inlet is
exposed (as shown here).
2. Pull the tube straight o the
earpiece.
Note: If you’re installing the wide
tube, you can skip steps 3 and 4.
3. Once you’ve removed the tube
completely, gently pull the
dome from the end of the tube.

connects to the earpiece
(shown here).
Note: A thin tube is shown here for
illustration. Step 6 applies for the
wide tube as well.

7. Place the hole on the bottom

down to attach the tube to the

Install the battery
1. Open the battery door on the
back of the earpiece.
2. Find the battery bag in the
storage case. Remove the
battery from the bag.
3. Peel the protective tab o the
back of the battery.
IMPORTANT: Don’t remove
the battery’s protective tab
until you’re ready to use the
battery! A ZA312 battery can
last for years in storage if you
leave its protective tab in place (see expiration date to
be sure). Removing this tab activates the battery for
use, which means the battery will run out of power in
a matter of weeks (probably even sooner), whether
you use it or not.

5. Close the battery door
completely.
NOTE: Normal battery life for the
RPSA05 earpiece is 7 full days of
use. The RPSA05 uses standard
A312 hearing aid batteries.
IMPORTANT: Once you close the battery door, the
RPSA05 is on and ready to use. The earpiece stays on
until the battery runs out of power or you open the battery
door again. If you’re not going to use the earpiece for a
while, open the battery door to conserve battery power.
Place Symphonix on Your Ear
The way you put Symphonix on your ear is dierent
depending on whether you’re using Symphonix with a thin
or wide tube.
Using Symphonix with a thin tube
Earpiece
1. Put the earpiece behind your
ear.
2. Insert the dome in your ear
gently. Then gently wiggle the
dome into the ear canal so
that it is comfortably in place.
3. Fold the tail into the bowl
of your ear. The tail will help
stabilize the earpiece on your
ear and keep the dome and
tube in place.
If the tail is too long to t
comfortably in the bowl of
your ear, use a pair of scissors
to trim it to a comfortable size.

Getting used to wearing the earpiece
The earpiece might be uncomfortable at rst. Having
something new in your ear might take a few days to get
used to, but any discomfort should subside after a few
days. If it doesn’t, you might want to try a dierent-sized
dome for the tube you’re using.
Installing the small dome for the wide tube
The dome that comes pre-installed on the wide tube
is designed to t most wearers. However, if after
using this dome for a few days you still experience
discomfort with it, you can switch to the wide-tube
small dome included in this package.
1. Hold the earpiece right-side up. Hold the dome
between your thumb and forenger. Secure the
end of the tube with the thumb and forenger of
your other hand.
2. Twist the dome downwards to remove it from the
end of the tube.
3. Find the plastic bag in this package containing the
small dome. Remove the small dome from this bag
and push it onto the end of the tube until it’s rmly
in place.
Using Symphonix with the wide tube
1. Twist the tube and dome to
the correct side for your ear.
Hold the tube close to the
end with the dome. Twist
the end of the tube with the
dome.
2. Put the earpiece body
behind your ear.
3. Insert the dome in your ear
gently. Then gently wiggle
the dome into the ear canal
so that it is comfortably in
place.
Note: Make sure the dome is rmly in position. You
may experience feedback if the t is too loose.

When you turn it on, the Symphonix earpiece goes
to setting 1 (minimum noise reduction, low-level
amplication).
Adjust the Volume
The RCA Symphonix earpiece has three preset levels of
sound amplication to t three distinct user proles or
listening environments.
Levels
1 minimum noise reduction, low-level amplication
2medium noise reduction, medium gain
3maximum noise reduction, maximum gain
Can I get more volume?
The wide tube provides more volume than the thin tubes.
Before installing the wide tube, we recommend that you
try a thin tube at all three volume levels described here. If
you want still more volume than the third level, follow the
instructions on page 3 to install the wide tube.
When NOT to use Symphonix
Do not use RCA Symphonix during prolonged exposure
to loud noises, like lawnmowers, motorcycles, or heavy
industrial machinery.

the volume button again. You should hear 1 short beep.
You can also turn the earpiece o and back on again. The
earpiece will automatically go to setting 1 when it’s turned
back on.
To adjust the volume: Find the
volume button on the earpiece
body. Completely depress it
for 1 second. You will hear 2
short beeps, which means the
earpiece is now on setting 2.

again until you hear 3 short

Adjusting the volume: an example
Let’s imagine someone puts on the RCA Symphonix
earpiece and wants to adjust the volume. Here’s how
he or she goes through the volume settings:
Turns on the earpiece; level 1setting.
Presses the volume button once (2 beeps); level 2
setting.
Presses the volume button again (3 beeps); level 3
setting.
Presses the volume button a third time (1 beep);
level 1setting.
Low-battery indicator
The RCA Symphonix earpiece has an audible indicator
when its battery should be replaced: it lets out a soft,
constant beeping. So, if you hear a beeping that
continues past several seconds, it’s time to replace the
battery in the RCA Symphonix earpiece. See page 4 for
instructions.

Cleaning and Care
With the proper care, your RCA Symphonix earpiece
should provide years of use. It is important to keep the
following cautions in mind.
:: DO NOT get water on or in the earpiece.
:: DO NOT wear the earpiece while swimming,
showering, in heavy rain, or in a moist atmosphere (like
a sauna).
:: DO NOT use solvents or liquids on the earpiece.
:: DO NOT use solvents on the tube or dome.
:: DO NOT sleep with the earpiece on.
:: DO NOT leave the earpiece in or near direct sunlight or
excessive heat.
:: Remove the RCA Symphonix earpiece when applying
cosmetics, perfume, aftershave, hairspray, lotion, or
any other product that might get into the earpiece.
:: Remove the RCA Symphonix earpiece during strenuous
physical activities, like working out.
:: Keep the RCA Symphonix earpiece clean and dry.
If you nd yourself in a situation where the RCA
Symphonix might get wet—caught in the rain without an
umbrella, for example—just take o the earpiece and put
it in your pocket or purse.
Getting used to new sounds
RCA Symphonix lets you experience sounds you might
not be used to hearing, everyday sounds like clocks
ticking, paper rustling or crinkling, nearby whispering or
soft conversation, outdoor noises like wildlife or trac, or
nearby footsteps. It might take you a while to get used to
all these new sounds...at rst, they might be distracting.
Using RCA Symphonix with your phone
You should be able to use the RCA Symphonix earpiece
with your home phone or cell phone without any feedback
or discomfort. If you have any diculties using the
earpiece with your phone, see the troubleshooting section
of this manual.

Suggested maintenance
To get the most from your RCA Symphonix earpiece,
you should keep a routine of cleaning its parts. We
recommend the following schedule:
Daily Clean the earpiece
Weekly Clean the tube and dome
Clean the microphone and
sound inlet
Every 3-4 months Replace the tube and dome
Cleaning the earpiece
Use a soft cloth to wipe the earpiece after use to remove
any particles or moisture. Be careful not to get water on
or in the earpiece.
IMPORTANT: Take the battery out before you clean the tube
and dome.
Open the battery door. Then take
the battery out and put it in a safe
place—you’ll put it back in after
you’re done cleaning the tube and
dome. Finally, close the battery
door and follow the directions
below to clean the tube and dome.
Replacing the tube and dome

If there’s wax in the tube: Use a section of monolament
shing line (medium to heavy-gauge) to clean inside the
tube.
Cleaning the microphone and sound inlet
The microphone and sound inlet on your earpiece are
under the tube connector. To clean these parts, you must
rst remove the tube from the earpiece (see Cleaning the
tube and dome).

a small brush to gently remove
any particles that may be on the
earpiece’s microphone or sound
inlet (shown here). DO NOT use
any liquids or solvents on the
earpiece.

a soft, moist cloth or mild soap and water to clean
the tube and dome.
IMPORTANT: Make sure all components are
completely dry before you put them back on the
earpiece.

so could harm the tube connector or the components in
your earpiece and void your warranty.

Tour of the RCA Symphonix Earpiece
Battery door houses the replaceable battery for the
RPSA05. Once you insert a working battery in this door
and close it, the RPSA05 is on and ready to use.
Volume button switches between the three sound
settings available (see the Adjusting the volume section)
Tube connector attaches the tube to the earpiece.
Microphone picks up sounds in your immediate
surroundings. It is protected by the tube connector.
Earpiece body holds the electronics for the RCA
Symphonix Personal Sound Amplier. These electronics
process the sound from the earpiece’s microphone.
Tube carries audio from the earpiece to your ear. The
thin right tube comes attached to the earpiece from the
factory. A variety of tubes is available in this package. See
page 2 for more information. For replacement tubes, visit
RCASymphonix.com.
Dome ts securely in your ear, like an earbud. For
replacement domes, visit RCASymphonix.com.
Tail tucks into the bowl of your ear to secure the earpiece
in place when you wear it.

Troubleshooting
Most problems with the RCA Symphonix earpiece can be
resolved by trying the following common troubleshooting
solutions. Try the solutions in the order listed. If you have
any further questions, please call our toll-free help line at
1-888-225-2644 or visit RCASymphonix.com
There’s no sound from the earpiece.
:: There is a 2-3 second delay when you rst close the battery door before
the circuitry is ready. This is normal.
:: Make sure the earpiece’s battery door is closed completely.
:: Make sure the battery in the earpiece is working. You might need to
replace it. Normal battery life for the RPSA05 earpiece is 7 full days of
use. The RPSA05 uses standard A312 hearing aid batteries.
:: Make sure the tube and dome are clean. Follow the directions on page
10 to clean them.
:: Make sure the sound inlet and microphone are clean. Follow the
directions on page 11 to clean them.
The sound from the earpiece isn’t loud enough.
:: Try a dierent volume setting on the earpiece. Press 1 second on the
earpiece’s volume button until you hear beeps. Two beeps is for volume
level 2, three for volume level 3.
:: Make sure the dome is inserted completely into your ear. Gently wiggle
it into your ear canal.
:: Make sure the tube is snapped onto the earpiece properly and that the
dome is fully seated on the end of the tube.
:: Make sure the tube and dome are clean. Follow the directions on page
10 to clean them.
:: Make sure the sound inlet and microphone are clean. Follow the
directions on page 11 to clean them.
:: Try the wide tube provided in this package. The wide tube provides
more volume than the thin tubes. Before installing the wide tube, we
recommend that you try a thin tube at all three volume levels. If you
want still more volume than the third level, follow the instructions on
page 3 to install the wide tube.
:: You may be producing excessive earwax. Consult your hearing or
healthcare professional.
I hear feedback or whistling from the earpiece.
:: Make sure the tube is snapped onto the earpiece properly and that the
dome is fully seated on the end of the tube.
:: Make sure the dome is inserted completely into your ear. Gently press it
into your ear canal.
:: If you are using the thin tube with medium-sized dome (the one that
came pre-installed on the right tube), try installing the larger dome that
comes in this package. See the instructions for replacing the dome on
page 12.

:: You may be producing excessive earwax. Consult your hearing or
healthcare professional.
The earpiece keeps beeping.
:: This means the earpiece needs a new battery. The RPSA05 uses
standard A312 hearing aid batteries.
The sound is distorted/not clear.
:: You might need to replace the earpiece’s battery. Normal battery life for
the RPSA05 earpiece is 7 full days of use. The RPSA05 uses standard
A312 hearing aid batteries.
:: Make sure the tube and dome are clean. Follow the directions on page
10 to clean them.
:: Make sure the sound inlet and microphone are clean. Follow the
directions on page 11 to clean them.
:: Your RCA Symphonix earpiece may be damaged. Contact customer
service at 1-888-225-2644.
There’s wax in the tube
:: Use a section of monolament shing line (medium to heavy-gauge) to
clean inside the tube.

General Warnings
If you have or think you may have any one of the following symptoms, do
not use this product until you have consulted a physician:
:: History of excessive wax build-up
:: Pain or discomfort in the ear
:: Fluid or drainage from the ear within the past 90 days
:: Ear canal blockage, a lasting ear infection, or a plugged up fullness
feeling
:: Visible deformity of the ear
:: Sudden, rapidly progressing, or uctuating hearing loss within the past
90 days
:: Chronic diculty hearing
:: Ringing in only one ear
:: Hearing loss only in one ear that worsened in the past 90 days
:: Spells of acute or chronic dizziness
Keep all parts of the RCA Symphonix earpiece away from children under
the age of 3. These components contain small parts that may present a
choking hazard.

6-Month Limited Warranty
Audiovox Accessories Corporation (the “Company”) warrants to the
original retail purchaser of this product that should this product or any part
thereof, under normal use and conditions, be proven defective in material
or workmanship within 6 months from the date of original purchase, such
defect(s) will be repaired or replaced with new, refurbished, or recertied units
(at the Company’s option) without charge for parts and repair labor.
To obtain repair or replacement within the terms of the warranty, the product
is to be delivered with proof of warranty coverage (e.g. dated bill of sale),
specication of defect(s), transportation prepaid, to an approved warranty
station. For the location of the nearest warranty station to you, call toll-free to
our control oce: 1-800-645-4994.
This Warranty is not transferable and does not cover product purchased
outside the United States or Canada. The warranty does not extend to the
elimination of externally generated static or noise.
The warranty does not apply to any product or part thereof which, in the
opinion of the company, has been damaged through alteration, improper
installation, mishandling, misuse, neglect, accident or exposure to liquid or
solvents. This warranty does not apply to damage caused by earwax or an AC
adapter not provided with the product.
THE EXTENT OF THE COMPANY’S LIABILITY UNDER THIS WARRANTY IS
LIMITED TO THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT PROVIDED ABOVE AND, IN
NO EVENT, SHALL THE COMPANY’S LIABILITY EXCEED THE PURCHASE
PRICE PAID BY PURCHASER FOR THE PRODUCT.
This Warranty is in lieu of all other express warranties or liabilities. ANY
IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF
MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, SHALL
BE LIMITED TO DURATION OF THIS WARRANTY. ANY ACTION FOR

8. Ne pas installer près d’une source de chaleur, par exemple des radiateurs, des registres
de chaleur, des poêles ou autres appareils (amplicateurs, par exemple) qui produisent
de la chaleur.
9. Protéger le cordon d’alimentation de manière à ne pas marcher dessus ni le pincer,
surtout au niveau de la che, de la prise ou à la sortie du cordon de l’appareil.
10. Débrancher cet appareil pendant les orages ou lorsqu’il n’est pas utilisé pendant des
périodes prolongées.
11. Coner l’entretien de l’appareil à un technicien agréé. Faire réparer l’appareil s’il a été
endommagé de quelque manière que ce soit, par exemple si le cordon d’alimentation,
ou la che, est endommagé, si du liquide a été renversé sur l’appareil ou si des objets
sont tombés sur l’appareil, s’il a été exposé à la pluie ou à l’humidité, s’il ne fonctionne
pas normalement ou s’il est tombé.

Les amplicateurs de son personnels ont pour objet d’amplier les sons environnementaux,
mais ils ne sont pas destinés à des personnes malentendantes. Ils ne sont pas destinés
à compenser une décience auditive. Exemples de situations courantes d’utilisation
d’un amplicateur de son personnel : chasse (entendre le gibier), observation d’oiseaux,
conférences lorsque l’intervenant est éloigné, écoute de sons faibles diciles à entendre
(par exemple, conversations de personnes éloignées, spectacles). Les amplicateurs de
son personnels n’étant ni destinés à diagnostiquer, traiter, soigner, atténuer un trouble, ni à
modier la structure ou la fonction du corps, ils n’entrent pas dans le cadre des appareils
dénis par la loi sur les aliments, les produits pharmaceutiques et cosmétiques [Federal
Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act]. Par conséquent, il n’existe ni classication réglementaire, ni
code de produit ni dénition pour ces produits. De plus, il n’existe aucune exigence quant à
l’enregistrement des fabricants et de la liste de ces produits auprès de la FDA.
Cependant, les amplicateurs de son personnels sont soumis aux dispositions de la loi
de 1968 sur la protection contre les radiations [Radiation Health and Safety Act], en vertu
desquelles la FDA réglemente les produits électroniques qui émettent des vibrations sonores,
comme le matériel d’amplication sonore. (se reporter également à la réglementation
21 CFR 1000.15.) Les fabricants d’amplicateurs de son personnels doivent déclarer
tout défaut et tout événement indésirable, et prendre d’autres mesures décrites dans la
réglementation 21 CFR Part 1003. Les fabricants d’amplicateurs de son personnels doivent
également satisfaire aux exigences de rachat, de réparation ou de remplacement de produits
électroniques en vertu de la réglementation 21 CFR Part 1004.
Jeter les piles-boutons en prenant toutes les précautions nécessaires.
• Ne pas laisser les enfants jouer avec les piles-boutons. Conserver les piles-boutons hors

avalent des piles-boutons après les avoir confondues avec des pilules ou des cachets.
• Conserver les télécommandes et tout autre appareil électronique hors de la portée des
enfants si les compartiments des piles ne sont pas xés par une vis. Utiliser du ruban
adhésif pour bien xer le compartiment des piles.
• Si une pile-bouton est ingérée, consulter immédiatement un médecin. Il est possible de
