S/C Yachts Yachts SC 420 User manual

420InstructionManual 2008Edition
Introduction
The boat comeswithallgearreadytosail, howeverthereisacertainamountof assemblywhichwehope wecan
coverinthisinstruction manualand through the tuning guide, thatwillmakeit muchquickertoassembleand get your
S|C420 on the waterreadyforsailing orracing.
Allthe partscomeintheboatsexceptthe masts, whichwillbe located inthe containertogether.Soafteryoufind the
mast you must then open up yourboat and assemblein anyorderthatsuitsyourrequirements.Inthe below
information and alsowiththe assistanceofthe tuning guide, you shouldbe abletocorrectlyset up eachspecificpart
of the boat.
Mast
The mast comeswiththe adjustablespreadersand youwillneed tobolttheseon (nutsand boltsprovided),alsoput
the shroud inthe spreaderend using ascrewdriver(position the shroud wirebehind the bolt).Fasten the shroud and
the trapezelinesinwiththeTterminalsbeforeattaching the shroud tothe spreaderend. You willalsoneed tofeed
the ropesintothe mastviathe mouseline supplied, thebest waytodo thisistotape the tworopestogethersecurely
priortopulling the newline through.The spreaderadjusterswork very welland 1fullturnisequalto5mm of prebend.
Toset theseup originallyI recommend pullingon areasonableamount of tension,then step back 15 metres+and
lineup the shroud wirejust abovethe shroud adjusterand then comparethe shroud/spreaderposition.Makethese
even first beforeattempting totune the rig,alsoIadvisehaving morebend than required originallyand then reducing
itonceyou areclosetothetuning numberson the rigtension and mast rake.
RiggingPack
Belowisapictureof the rigging packsupplied bySeldon. You will find initthe Topperand TopperHook,the Main
Halyard,the SpinnakerHalyard, the TrapezeWires, theForestayand ForestayHalyard,the Shrouds, the RigTension
Strop,the FalseForestayand lastlythe InnerForestay(tothisthe ForestaySpinner,isrequired tobe added by
putting on abovethe swageand inserting the bolt, soitcan’t comeback off).
Boom
One boomissupplied asshown below, allgearshouldbe on orinthe boom.Setthe vang slide to625mm tothe
centreofthe slidefromthe backofthe mast track.Setthe frontmainsheet slideto1385mm tothe centreofthe slide
fromthe back of the masttrack, alsohavethesecond mainsheet slide setjust behind the first one atthe 1385mm
point.
Pole
One poleissupplied withthe endsfacing up.Fromthe rope bag tiethe polerope on asthe picturebelowshows, so
the rope hangsbelowthe polewhen being used.
Bow Attachments
Havethe bowattachments, shackled asshown. Then tie on the falseforestayelasticand the jibtackrope,thentiethe
jibtackdownasrequired.
Forestay Spinner and JibHead
Shackleontothe forestayspinnerand then usethe ropeforthejibhead tie,togetthe optimal position foryourjib
everytimeyougo sailing.You can usethe long shackle orthe short shackle,plusalsousethe supplied tieif required.
The position ofthe jibhead shouldbe approx20mm fromthe bottomsurfaceof the spinner.Belowisapictureusing
the long shackle(whichwerecommend withno tie).
MastBase
The mast step boltshouldbe inthe 6th holefromthe back.The rigtension bolt shouldbe inthe3rd holefromtheback.
Spreader Length andMarks
The spreaderlengthshouldbe 505mm fromside ofmast tocentreof shroud wire, thisisthe 5th pinholeposition. Mark
the spreadersevery twocm’sfromthe centreof the shroud wire, thiscan be used forthe jibtrimwithregardtothe
leechsettings.
TrapezeSystem
The trapezeropesand blocksarepreassembled,inthefitting bag.Onceyouget themout,shacklethemon the
trapezewiresand hookthemontothe trapezeelasticloopsasshown, byfeeding the elasticbowline through thehole
and overthe edge ofthe ring.
RopeBag
Inthe rope bag isalist of allthe ropeson the boat.Thislist showswhichropesarealreadyon the boatand also
whichropescomeinthe bag.Alsolisted isthe sizeandlengthof eachrope.Allthe ropesinthe bag comewithalabel
attached, soyou can quicklyassemblethemasrequired.
Fitting Bag
Inthe fitting bag areallthe fittingsthat arenotfixedon the yacht orloosewithasystemthat must be put on afteryou
receivethe boat. Wehavealsoprovided alist ofallthe fittingstoassist assemblyontothe boat.Theseshouldallbe
relativelystraightforwardtoposition themon the boatinthe correct systems.
Jib SheetMarks
Onthe boatwehaveprovidedmarksforthe jibsheets. Fortuning information see tuning guide.
Vang
Havethe rope stropsand vang blocksattached asshownabovetothe mastcollar.The otherend shouldbe attached
asthe belowillustration shows. Thereare3vang ropesinthe rope bag, a2.5mwhichisused fromthrough thecleat
and hull at eachend and hasasingleHarken sheaveonit.The 2nd vang rope whichis2mlong and thisgoesfromthe
singleblockthough the singleblockwithabecket up toanothersingleblock and then back downtothe becket. The
3rd vang rope istied off ontothe shackleattached tothevang and mast strap inabowline, then goesup through the
singleHarken airblock(whichisshackled toaclipthatattachesontothe vang slide on the boom)then back downto
the singleHarken block.Alsosee the mast basepicturetoget agood understanding of the mast end of the vang
system.
Spinnaker Sheetsand Spinnaker Knots
The spinnakersheet rope isaspecialtype of 6mm rope. Thisenablesyou touseitina6mm formortaperit downif
you likeafterthe spinnakersheet cleatsposition intoasmallerlighterdiameterof rope. Weadviseclientstoput in
spinnakersheet knotsbeforethe spinnakersheet blocks on the side deck.Theseshouldbe positioned sothe
spinnakercan be bagged ineitherofyourpreferred bagswithadequateroomon thesheet, but notsomuchthat the
spinnakercan blowout and twist orcapsizethe boatatan undesirabletime.Astopperknotisokayforthis. Youcan
alsoloop itthrough itselfif itiseasierand if you prefertochange theseon the waterwithmoreease. You willfind
thesefittingsinthe fitting bag.
Mainsheet
Assemblethe mainsheet asthe picturebelowshows. The boomfittingswillbe found inthe fittingbag.
PlasticRopeBalls
Thesetworope ballsshouldbe usedon the poledownhaulsysteminfront of the knot (see pictureundermast base)
and alsoon the spinnakerhalyardbeforethe knot(see picturebelow). The ballswillbefound inthe fitting bag.
PoleHook
The pictureaboveshowshowtotieon the polehook, abowline through the ring and twohalfhitchesbelowaround
the hookarm.Alsoif yourpoleiscoming outofthesehookstoo easily, closethe ring up atthe opening withapairof
vicegripsorsimilar.
Chocks and Reverse Chocking Compass Bracket
Wehavesupplied 5x5mm (refertotuning guideas ½)chocksand 5x10mm (refertotuning guide as1)chocks, these
can be used tochock the mast and lockitintoplaceforeand aft whilst sailing.Thisclearlyhasabigadvantageon
othersystemsand asthe mast can be chocked forwardinthe verylightand reaching and strong winds, no vangcan
be used forreaching withoutinverting themast. Thisequatestohigherspeedsand betteranglestobe sailedacross
reaches, withless overpowering ofthe boat.
Centre Case Systems
Belowisapictureof the centrecasesystemsand travelerbar.
CentreboardUphaul and DownhaulSystem
Tieon the centerboardtieasshown, thisshouldbe abletobe takenoff witheasebyslipping the bowline overthe two
ballson the centerboard. Alsofeed the centerboarduphauldirectlythrough the centerboardand back downtothe
side blocksbeforegoing backtothe side cleatsasshownabove.
CentreboardFastening
The centerboardcomeswithan alloyblue bush, thisshouldbe positioned inthe CBpivotholepriortoinsertinginto
the case. Insert the centerboardintocaseand then usethe centreboardboltand washerstolocateand bolt thefoil
through the centrecase. You shouldusethe twofoamwasherson the inside ofthe bolttoprevent watercoming into
the hullfromthe casewhilst sailing.
Spongeand Bailer
Asponge and bailerisprovided asshowninthe picturebelow, thiscan be useful inlightairswhen the autobaileror
venturiisnotfunctional.You can storetheminthe spinnakerbagsand you maywishtohavethebailertied intothe
boat.
TensionGauge
Wehaveprovided acomplimentary Loo’sSpring Gauge asbelowwiththe boat.Weusethison the shroud when
rigging and tuning the boat.
WindIndicator
Wehaveprovided acomplimentary High PerformanceNewZealand made wind indicator,thiscomesinit’sown box
and hasinstruction manualsofhowtoassemble.The wind indicatorshouldbe fastened tothe top ofthe rigviaduck
tape orbydrilling aholethrough the top of the mast just bigenough forthe wind indicatortogo into.Then drill another
smallholethrough theside ofthe top of the mast bracket. Through thisholeyou shouldusewhipping twine toattach
the indicatortothe mast.
Shackles
Ineachboatinthe fitting bag arethe shacklesused toassemblethe boat. Thereare5bigshackles, 2small long D
shacklesand 3smallscrewshackles.
Useone ofthe bigshackleson the forestayatthe forkend, one forthevang attachment ontothe vang mast strap and
one forconnecting the vang snap hookontothe top ofthe vang system, whichconnectsontotheboom. Anotherone
shouldbe usedforthe mainhalyardand thelast one istoconnectthe rigtension strop tothe Harken tripleblock with
the cleat on it.The smalllong Dshackleshouldbe used on the falseforestaytoattachtothe stemfitting asshown
and alsoontothe spinneratthe top,whichconnectsontothe top ofthe jib.Twoscrewshacklesshouldbe usedon
the top of eachtrapezerope cleatand the othercan beused on the jibspinnerif you want the head tobe higheron
the wireand the long Dshackledoesnot permitthis.
Spare Mylar
Wehavealsoprovided acomplimentary doublemylarpack incaseyou damage the setthatissupplied withthe boat.
Theseareveryeasytoapply,justmakesurethatthe surfaceisveryclean and dry beforeapplyinganynewmylar.If
you usesolventstoclean the surface,justmakesurethat allresidue isremovedbeforeapplying the mylartapes. You
willfind the sparemylarsinthe fitting bag.
Rudder Stock
One rudderstock issupplied withthe boatand can be taken on and off the boat byremovingthe top safetypin
through the gudgeon pintle.The rudderstock alsocomeswithatillerextension that can be added orremovedeasily
bysnapping togetherthe twopartsat the baseofthe tillerextension universaljoint.Forfastening the rudderintothe
stock thereisa6mm bolt withtwowing nutson eachside and alsoaplasticpinforlocking the rudderdown. The bolt
goesinthe top locating holeand the plasticpingoesinthe lowerhole.
Covers
The boat comeswithabottomcoverand top coverforthe hulland the centerboardand rudderwillbe inside thefoil
covers.The top covercan be used withthe mast riggedorwiththe mast down.
Trolley
The trolleysupplied willcomewithallfastenersplusonefastening key,it willbe disassembled.Forassembly
instructionssee the instructionssupplied withthe trolley.The assembled trolleyshouldlooklikethe picturebelow.
Sails
One main,jiband spinnakeraresupplied inside the boat and willbe readytosailincluding numbersand country code
if knownat the timeofmanufacture.Forsailtuning informationsee tuning guide.
