FirstoffletmesaythatIassumeNOresponsibilityforyoudamagingyourvehicleduringthis
installationprocess.Thisshouldbeattemptedonlybypersonsfamiliarwithelectronicswhoare
comfortablemodifyingcircuitboardsandsolderingsmallwiresontosmallsurfacemounted
components.Ifyoudon’thaveaDMM(DigitalMulti‐Meter)andagoodfinetippedsoldering
iron,donotattemptthis.IhighlysuggestyoupurchaseausedISM(IgnitionSwitchModule)
fromajunkyardsothatyoucanalwaysreplaceyouroriginaloneifneeded.Theyarearound
$75andarebackwardscompatiblefrom2003‐2009.Ialsohighlysuggestyouobtainacopyof
theWISDVDfortheSaab9‐3.TheseareavailableonEBAYforabout$30.Thiswillgiveyou
instructionsonhowtoremovetheISMaswellasthecorrectwirecolorsandpin‐outsforyour
modelyear.Pleasereadallinstructionsbeforebeginning.

OnceyouhaveyourspareISM(ororiginaloneifyou’rebrave),openit.Usesmalljewelers’flat‐
bladescrewdriverstoreleasealloftheclips.Insidetherewillbeacircuitboardalongwithouter
plasticpieces.Becarefulnottolosethecenterspringwhichisunderthekeyplunger.Ontothe
circuitboard.GentlyremovetheRFIDcoilantenna(blackplasticring)bysqueezingtheclips
whilepullingitupandoutofitssocket.Nowyouneedtocutthetracesonthetopandbottom
onthecircuitboardasshowninthepictures.CutthemwhereIhavedrawnthepinklines
acrossthetrace.Useanexacto‐knife.Verifyyouhavecontinuitybeforeandthennocontinuity
afterthecut.Thereare4tracestocut,1onthetopofthecircuitboardand3onthebottom.
NOTE:Theredwiresalongwithcuttingthetracenexttotheredwiresareoptional,butI
recommendthemforsecurityastheSaabCIMonlychecksthekey’stranspondercodeonce
duringkeyinsertion.Thismeansthatafterthecarhasbeenremotestarted,theISMcanbe
turnedwithyourthumbtotheONpositionandthendrivenaway.Granted,athiefwouldstill
needtobreakthewindowtogetintothevehicle,butIlikedtheideaofextrasecurityto
preventanyonefromstealingthevehicle.Ihaveinstalledasecretswitchwhichneedstobe
pressedandheldwhileturningthekeyfromLOCKtoOFFandthenON.Thisonlyneedstobe
donewhiletheremotestarterisactive.TheISMwillfunctionnormallywhenthevehicleisnot
runningviatheremotestarter.
Afterallofthenecessarytraceshavebeencut;carefullysolderthewirestothecircuitboard
usingthepicturesasaguide.Keepinmindwhensolderingtheredandvioletwiresthatyou
needtobeabletore‐attachtheRFIDcoilantennasoitsitsflatonthecircuitboard.Notethat
thewhitewireneedstobesolderedin2places.Alsotheorangeandgreenwirespassthrough

thecircuitboardfromthebottomandaresolderedtothetop.Becarefulthattheydon’tshort
togetherastherearesmalltracesthatcomeclosetothem,andalsokeepthemawayfromthe
switchcontacts.Iused24AWGwire.OncethatisdonecutanotchordrillaholeintheISM
plasticcovertofitthewiresthroughwhensnappingtheISMbacktogether.Minecameoutthe
frontoftheISM.(Ifinstalledinthecar,thesideoftheISMthatfacesthefrontofthecar)
Next,constructthecircuitthatmyschematicdepicts.AllofthepartsareavailableatRadio
Shack.TheRFIDcoilcanbemadefromanycoatedwire.28AWGtransformerwirewillwork
well.Iused28AWGaluminumwirethatIhadlyingaround.100turnswillworkfine.Makesure
thatthetipofyoursparekeywillfitinsidethecoil.Don’tmakeittoobigeither;youwantthe
tipofthekeytojustfitinside.Thesparekeywillbetapedortie‐wrappedinsidethecoilandthe
coilwillbehiddenupinsidethedashsonoonecaneasilygettoit.
TheRS(RemoteStarter)doesn’tneedalotofcurrentbecausethiscarusesalowcurrentdigital
ignitionswitch.SoIhookedtheRS’spowerwirestoasparefuseintheIPEC22.(fusepanelat
leftsideonthedash)IremovedtheRSmain30ampfusesandreplacedthemwith10amp
ones.TheRSshouldalsoincludeakeylessentryfeature.Withoutthisyouwon’tbeableto
unlockthedoorwhentheRSisactive.ThisisbecausetheCIMignoresallkeylessentryrequests
fromthefactorytransmitterwhentheignitionison.Unfortunatelybecausetheentirecarruns
onabussystem,youwillneedtofeedwiresintothedriverdoortoaccessthelock/unlockand
trunkreleasewires;unlessofcourseyoucanfindanaftermarketI‐BUSinterfaceforaSaab9‐3.
GoodLuck!YoucanalsopurchaseaRSwithkeylessentryandanalarmifyouwantevenmore
security.IusedtheAvital4103whichhaskeylessentry.YoucangetoneonEBAYforabout$50.
UsetheWIStofindthewiresandconnectorsfortheparkinglights,doorlocks,trunkrelease,
brakelightswitch,hoodswitch,(ifyouhaveafactoryalarm)etc.Followtheinstructionsthat
camewiththeRStohookupthesewires.YouwillonlyusetheIGN#1,IGN#2,andSTART
outputsontheRS.YouwillnotneedtheACCoutput.Connectthesewirestoyournewly
createdcircuitboard.AlsoconnectthewiresyoupreviouslysolderedtotheISMcircuitboardto
yournewcircuitboard.Ihighlysuggestusingplug/jackconnectorssothingscanberemoved
easilyfortesting/troubleshooting.
Withanyluckwhenyouhookeverythingupitwillwork.Ifitdoesn’twork,you’llneedbasic
electronictroubleshootingskillstofindtheproblem.Ihaveitworkingona2008Saab9‐3Turbo
XwiththeB284R2.8TV6enginewithanautomatictransmission.Ididn’tfakethemodulewake
up(preparetostart)signalastheB284Rengine/ECMwillstartjustfinewithoutit.Other
engines/ECMsmayneedthissignal.Itisusedprimarilytoprimethefuelpump.Onthisengine
thefuelrailremainsunderpressurewhiletheengineisoffandthepumpcanalmostinstantly
supplytherequiredpressuretotherailanyhow.Ifyourengine/ECMneedsthissignal,another
wirewillberequired.

Thereareafewquirksasthiscarwasneverintendedtohavearemotestartersysteminstalled.
Ifthefactoryalarmissettofull,thealarmwilltripwhentheremotestarterisactivatedbutwill
cancelahalfsecondlaterwhenthekeyisread.Thehornbeepsonceforasplitsecondanda
messageappearsontheSIDthatthealarmwastriggered.Ifyoucan’tdealwiththisyoucan
changethefactoryalarmsettingsorjustlockthedoorswiththeRSremoteandnotthefactory
remote.

OPERATION
Ifthecarisnotrunning:
RemotestartthecarwiththeRSremote.OncethecarisrunningyoucanusetheRS
remotetounlockthedriver’sdoor/alldoors.PlacethekeyintheISMandnoticeyou
cannotturnittoOFFfromLOCK.Pressandholdthesecretswitchwhileturningthekey
toOFFfromLOCK.Releasethesecretswitch.TurnthekeytoON.(Ifyoudidn’tinstall
theredwiresandcutthattrace,youcanjustinsertthekeyandturnittoON)Pressthe
brakepedaltodisengagetheRSmodule.(Ifyouinstalledtheredwiresandcutthat
trace,butdidn’tinstallasecretswitch;youwillneedtoshutdowntheRSwiththeRS
remoteorbypressingthebrakepedal.Thenstartthecarnormallywiththekey)(Ifyou
didn’tinstalltheRSkeylessentryfunctionoryourRSdoesn’thaveakeylessentry
option;youwillneedtoshutdowntheRSwiththeRSremote.Thenthefactoryremote
willbeabletounlockthedoors.)
Ifthecarisalreadyrunningandyouwanttoleaveitrunningwhileyourunintothestore:
Pressthe*key(Avital4103)ontheRSremotewhiletheignitionkeyisstillintheON
position.Waitafewseconds.TurnthekeytoOFF.NoticethekeywillnotturntoLOCK.
PressandholdthesecretswitchwhileturningthekeytoLOCKfromOFF.Releasethe
secretswitch.Removethekeyandexitthecar.(Ifyoudidn’tinstalltheredwiresand
cutthattrace,youcanjustturnthekeytoLOCKandremoveitandthenexitthecar)
LockthecarwiththeRSremote.(Ifyouinstalledtheredwiresandcutthattrace,but
didn’tinstallasecretswitch;youwillnotbeabletoturntheKEYtoLOCKorremoveit;
sodonotusethisfeatureoftheRS.)(Ifyoudidn’tinstalltheRSkeylessentryfunctionor
yourRSdoesn’thaveakeylessentryoption;youwillbeabletousethisfeature,butyou
willnotbeabletolockthecar,becausethelockswitchinthedriver’sdoorwillnotlock
thedoorwhileitisopen.)
