Installing a Policy
Traffic Switch
The Policy Traffic Switch is designed to be mounted in
a 19-inch rack. This chapter provides instructions for
installing the element into a rack, connecting AC or DC
power, and cabling the element.
Topics discussed include:
•“Getting started” on page 14 — outlines safety
precautions and provides an illustration of the
front panel.
•“PTS installation tasks” on page 17 —lists the tasks
required to install the PTS and provides detailed
procedures.

Getting started
Before installing a PTS, complete the following steps.
1. In the appendix for the PTS hardware configuration, read the important safety
and regulatory information governing the installation and use of a PTS in different
countries.
2. Review the safety precautions you should observe, as described in Appendix C:
Safety warnings on page 49.
3. Review the environmental specifications, as described in the appendix for the
hardware configuration.
If you experience installation problems, contact Sandvine Customer Support (see
“Contacting Sandvine” on page 10).
Overview of safety precautions
The PTS is a rack-mountable element. Improper handling can damage the system.
Before installing a PTS review the following safety precautions.
Warning: This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause
bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved
with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing
accidents.
Warning: Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or
replace this equipment.
Warning: Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods
of lightning activity.
Warning: Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, ensure
that you have removed all jewelry such as rings, necklaces, and watches. When
connected to power and ground, metal objects will heat up. This can result in
serious burns. Metal objects can also be welded together.

PTS front view
The following illustration shows the front view of a PTS. There are four lights, or LEDs
(light-emitting diodes) on the front of the element, as shown in the illustration below.
PTS with front LEDs illustrated
The following table briefly describes the function of each of the LEDs. More
information on using LEDs for troubleshooting is included in the PTS Configuration
Guide.
LED Indicator Condition
Online Green or off Green indicates device is operating normally. Off
indicates the box is offline.
Power Green or off Always illuminated when the element is powered
on.
Fault Off or red Normal operation is Off. Red indicates that the
operating temperature is too high. This may be
result of fan failure or pending fan failure, HVAC
failure or warmer than normal ambient conditions,
or blocked vents on the front or rear of the
element.
Faults are self-clearing when the condition no
longer exists.
Alarm Off or red Red indicates a software detected failure. Contact

Installing the PTS element
The PTS is designed to be installed in a 19-inch rack and requires 1RU (rack unit=1.75
inches (44.4 mm)) of rack space. You will need to supply the appropriate screws for
attaching the mounting brackets to the rack.
To install a PTS:
1. Remove the PTS element and accessories from the packaging. The package
includes the components listed in the following table.
2. Hold the element in position against the rack as shown in the following
illustration.
Place the element in a 19-inch rack
3. Ensure the mounting holes in the rack match the corresponding holes in the
element, as shown in the following illustration.

Align the mounting holes in the rack with the corresponding holes in the front brackets
4. Secure the element to the rack using appropriate screws. Ensure the bottom
holes are bolted in first, then work upwards.
Connecting the PTS ground to the CO ground
An adequate ground (earth) connection for the PTS should be provided. The element
has a dedicated ground lug for connecting to a central office common bonding
network (CBN). When installing the element, the ground connection must always be
made first.
To connect the PTS ground to the CO CBN:
1. Locate the grounding lug on the rear of the element.
2. Using a slotted screw driver, loosen the slotted screw on the element grounding
lug.
3. Place the CO ground wire in the opening on the side of the element ground lug.
4. Tighten the slotted screw until the CO ground wire is locked in the ground lug.
5. Connect the other end of the CO ground wire to the CBN.
