Operating Instructions | Version 1.0 (05-2018) | Uni-M Ferrule 15 | 32
5.3 DEFINITIONS
Shut height
The distance from the top of the applicator base plate to
the bottom of the press ram at bottom dead center when
the press is under load.
This can only be accurately measured with a press analysis
device or shut height measurement tool that allows meas-
urement during a full press cycle.
Stroke
The distance the press ram travels from top to bottom in
one complete cycle.
Pre-feed
The next terminal is in position over the crimp anvil before
the crimp (pre-crimp) cycle begins.
This method is more common for bench applications be-
cause the terminal is waiting over the anvil before the wire
is introduced.
Post-feed
The next terminal feeds into position over the crimp anvil
after the crimp cycle has started (post-crimp).
This method is more common for automatic termination
applications. This method allows more time for the
crimped wire end to move out of the way before the next
terminal moves into place.
5.4 DANGER ZONES
WARNING
Danger if operated y unqualified personnel!
The Uni-M applicators must only be operated by qualified personnel There are multiple areas on the Uni-
M that are danger zones Improper use or inadequate caution may result in injury to the operator or dam-
age to the product
1. Above and around the crimp tooling (1). Edges are
sharp and personal injury might occur.
a. This is applicable for all applicator types.
b. (Image is of ferrule applicator tooling with
funnels removed.)
2. Around the feed adjustment knob (2).
3. Between the adjustment dials and the ram and

6.1.2.3 Confirm clearance
1. After the applicator is mounted and before ferrules are loaded, cycle the press slowly either by hand or with the
press jog mode to ensure the tool is loaded correctly and the tooling does not crash.
CAUTION
Always verify proper installation y first cycling the press slowly!
To prevent tooling damage, whenever any applicator is loaded into a press, the press should be cycled slowly or
manually to ensure the tooling will not crash.
6.1.2.4 Activate split cycle mode
The Uni-M ferrule applicator requires a split cycle process Please refer to the press manual to enable split cy-
cle processing
6.1.2.4.1 Use on automatic wire processing machines
When using automatic processing machines, split cycle operation and the use of the wire funnels is required
Follow the machines instructions for programming split cycle operation
6.1.2.4.2 Use on bench-top crimping presses
When using bench-top crimping presses, split cycle operation is highly recommended
Split cycle ensures consistent positioning of the ferrules in the tooling and behind the funnels, therefore, tar-
geting is easier and throughput will be higher
If split cycle operation is not available, remove the wire funnels
Tip:
Split cycle operation is required for highest productivity

captured, close the shield and try a few crimps
to ensure the terminals continue to feed
properly.
18. If all is functioning well, raise the tooling and
install the funnel unit (8). Refer to Appendix A
for proper funnel size for Panduit ferrules.
(Note: The tooling must be raised, in the upper
position to install the funnel unit.)
19. Ensure the funnel unit is properly aligned.
20. Once the funnel unit is properly aligned, you
are ready to begin crimping.
CAUTION
Confirm proper ferrule position efore initiating a full cycle!
To prevent tooling damage, before initiating a full crimp cycle, verify that the ferrules are in the proper position in the
crimp tooling.
6.1.2. Verify/adjust crimp height
1.
Typically in a ferrule crimp there are low spots (CH1) and high spots (CH2) as seen in Fig. .
Fig.
2. When using Panduit end ferrules, crimp
height should be measured at the high
spot (CH1) using standard micrometers.
3. When using other brands of end ferrules,
crimp height should be measured at the
low spots (CH2) with a proper crimp
height measurement micrometer.
6.1.3 Remove the ferrule strip
1. Raise the press ram and tooling to the top.
2. Remove air pressure.
3. Open the shield and clear the ferrule on the anvil
if one is present.
. Lift the brake lever (1) and feed finger.
5. Gently pull the ferrule strip to the left to remove
the strip.

6.1.4 Remove the applicator
1. Raise the press ram to the top.
2. Remove air pressure.
3. Open the shield.
. Install the red tooling protection ring (1).
5. Remove the hose fitting from the quick connect
on the applicator.
6. Release the base plate lever.
7. Ensure a firm grip on the applicator and remove
it to the left.
6.2 ADJUSTMENTS
INFO
Always confirm quality!
After making any adjustments, always confirm crimp quality according to the given specifications
6.2.1 Reading and adjusting the crimp height dial
1. The crimp height adjustment dials consist of:
a. A dial (1) labelled 0 – 27 to adjust the conductor crimp height.
b. A lower ring with a reference mark (2).
2. Each increment (or click) of the dial changes the crimp height by a
0.01mm (0.000 ”).
a. Reduce crimp height by turning the top dial clockwise (to the left).
b. Increase crimp height by turning the top dial counterclockwise (to
the right).
c. A setting of “0” (zero) results in the maximum crimp height.
. Each major increment represents an index value of the number divided by 10
a. Examples: Dial setting on 8 refers to an index value of 0.8.
b. Example: Dial setting on 19 refers to an index value of 1.9.
a. Photo shown of the dial refers to an index setting of approximately 1.95.
5.
Setting the dial index values.
a. To achieve an index value of 0.85, start at “8” on the crimp dial (1) and turn it clockwise 5 clicks (0.80 +
5*0.01 = 0.85)
b. To achieve an index value of 1.23, from “12” on the crimp dial (1), turn it clockwise 3 clicks (1.20 + 3*0.01 =
1.23)
6.2.2 Back stroke adjustment
Proper adjustment
During the backstroke, the feed finger must pass over at least one full ferrule Depending on the range of fer-
rule sizes, it may be necessary to pass over 1 5 or more ferrules so that the entire range may be processed in
the same applicator As long as the forward stroke only advances one ferrule, then the backstroke position is
not critical
