CONTROLS See Figure 1.
1. CONDENSER MICROPHONE- Built in microphone for the right channel.
2. HEADPHONES JACK - Accepts stereo headphones for private listening.
3. PAUSE BUTTON - Temporarily stops the tape motion.
4. FF (Cue) BUTTON - Advances the tape at a fast speed.
5. REWIND (Rev) BUTTON - Rewinds the tape at a fast speed.
6. PLAY BUTTON - Places the recorder in the playback mode.
7. RECORD BUTTON - Places the recorder in the record mode.
8. STOP/EJ ECT BUTTON - Stops the tape and opens the cassette door.
9. TAPE (RADIO OFF)-RADIO SWITCH - Selects the tape or Radio operation.
10. TONE (LOW/HIGH) SWITCH - Adjusts tonal balance.
11. MONO/STEREO SWITCH - Selects mono or Stereo mode.
12. AM/FM SWITCH - Selects AM or FM mode.
13. TELESCOPIC ANTENNA -- Picks up FM Signals.
14. CONDENSER MICROPHONE - Built in microphone for the left channel.
J. TUNING KNOB - Tunes in desired AM or FM station.
16. VOLUME CONTROL - Adjusts sound level for the right channel.
17. VOLUME CONTROL - Adjusts sound level for the left channel.
18. FM STEREO INDICATOR - Indicates a FM stereo program is being recevied.
19. BATTERY INDICATOR - Indicates the battery condition.
20. DC 6V JACK - Accepts DC 6V adaptor.
21. MIC JACK - Accepts external microphone for the right channel.
22. MIC JACK - Accepts external microphone for the left channel.

PREPARATION FOR USE
INSERTING THE BATTERIES \
,Slide TAPE(RADIO OFF) -RADIO switch(_)
to the TAPE(RADIO OFF) position, and open
the battery compartment lid by pushing in the
notched area of the lid and sliding it in the
direction of the arrow.
See Figure 2. :igure 2
,Insert four "AA" size (1.5-volt) alkaline bat-
teries (not included) into the compartment
making sure they are inserted in the proper
direction as illustrated in the battery conpart-
ment as well as in Fig. 3. When installing the
batteries, place the ribbon straight on the bot-
tom of the compartment, then place the bat-
teries over it with the end of the ribbon com-
ing out over the batteries. This enables you to
remove the batteries by just pulling the end of
the ribbon out.
IMPORTANT: Improper battery installation
may damage the set.

3. Close the battery compartment lid by placing it over the compartment and slid-
ing it in the reversed direction of the arrow until the catch snaps in its locked
postio n.
4. To check if the batteries are fresh and installed properly, follow the steps below:
a. Press the PLAY button (_The BATTERY indicator 1_ should light.
b. Pressthe STOP/EJECT button (_) after the above check is completed.

OPERATING ON HOUSEHOLD CURRENT
Your unit may be operated from any 120-volt 60 hertz wall outlet with an AC adapt_
Plug the cord from the adaptor into the "DC 6V" jack (_
(optional accessory). on
the left side of the unit. Insert the adaptor plug into the wall outlet.
NOTE: 1. If you are to use a universal AC adaptor, be sure to set it for 6-volt DC and
positive center pin output. The batteries are automatically disconnected
whenever the AC adaptor cord is plugged into the DC 6V jack (_.Be sure
to remove the AC adaptor cord from the jack when you operate the unit
on the battery power,
2. The AC adaptor must be capable to supply 200 mA or more at 6 volts.
OPERATING ON AUTOMOBILE BATTERY (12V)
Your unit can also be operated on an auto battery by using an auto battery adaptor
(optional accessory). Plug the one end of the auto battery adaptor into the "DC 6V"
jack _) on the player and the other end into the auto cigarette lighter socket.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to use an auto battery adaptor which has a positive center pin
and converts 12 volts to 6 volts.

OPERATION
OPERATING FM STEREO RADIO
1. Connect the stereo headphone supplied to HEADPHONES JACK (_).

Install the batteries, or connect an AC power adaptor as described previously.
Set the TAPE (RADIO OFF)-RADIO switch (_) to the RADIO position, and set
the AM/FM switch to the FM position.
4. Rotate TUNING knob (_) for a desired station.
5. Raise and extend the TELESCOPIC ANTENNA (_) and swivel it to a position
where it gives you the clearest reception.

Set the MONO/STEREO switch (_ to the STEREO position. The FM STEREO
indicator (_ will light when a stereo broadcast is tuned in. If stereo reception is
poor, set MONO/STEREO switch (_ to the MONO position. This reduces noise,
however, the program will be heard in monaural.
Adjust the Left _and Right F-_I(_VOLUME Controls. Set the TONE Switch I_F-_
to the LOW or HIGH position for your desired sound volume, stereo effect and
tonal balance.
8. You may also enjoy the monaural sound from monitor speaker by disconnecting
the stereo headphones.

The monitor speaker will be automatically disconnected whenever the headphones
are connected to the PHONES jack (_).
To turn off the radio, set the TAPE(RADIO OFF) - RADIO switch (_) to the
TAPE(RADIO OFF) position.

Set the TAPE (RADIO OFF) -- RADIO switch (_)tothe RADIO position anda,
set AM/FM switch (_) to the AM position.
Tune in a desired station with the TUNING KNOB (_).
Adjust the Left (_ and Right (_) VOLUME controls.
Set the TONE switch (_ to the LOW or HIGH position for your desired tonal
balance.
To turn off the radio, set the TAPE (RADIO OFF) - RADIO switch (_ to the
TAPE (RADIO OFF) position.
INSERTING THE CASSETTE
1. Press the STOP/EJECT button (_) to open the cassette compartment lid. The lid
will not open at the first press when any of the PLAY(_, REW/rev (_) or FF/cue
(_) button is in its depressed position. Press the STOP/EJECT button (_) again to
open the lid.

Insert a cassette tape in the compartment with
full reel to the right and the side to be played
is UP. See Figure(_
Close the lid by pushing the top edge of the
lid.
4. To remove cassette, press STOP/EJECT but-
ton (_. Press the button twice when required
as stated in the Step 1 above. Figure 5

PLAYING PRERECORDEDTAPE
Insert a prerecorded tape cassette as stated on the preceding page.
2. Connect the stereo headphones supplied to PHONES jack (_ for stereo playback.
3. Press the PLAY button (_).
4. Adjust the Left (_ and Right (_ VOLUME controls for the listening level you
choose.
Set the TONE switch (_ to the HIGH or LOW position as prefered.
.To skip a short section of the tape, push down the FF/cue 4_ or REW/rev (_
button with the PLAY button _) locked in its down positon. The tape will quickly
advance. As your finger is removed from the FF/cue or REW/rev button, the
player resumes playback immediately. To skip a longer section of the tape, push
down the STOP/EJECT button (_ first to stop the tape, push the FF/cue (_ or
REW/rev _button, then push the PLAY button (_ to resume the playback oper-
ation.
.If you want to play back the same section repeatedly, push down the REW/rev
bu_on (_ without pushing down the STOP/EJECT button (_. The tape will be
rapidly rewound with chattering sound, and as you take your finger off the but-
ton, it will start the playback immediately. To rewind the tape to its beginning,
push down the STOP/EJECT button _) first, then push down the REW/rev
button (_) . Press down the STOP/EJECT button (_) when you rewound tape to
its beginning.
7. To end the playback, press the STOP/EJECT button (_).

AUTO STOPSYSTEM
Your set is equipped with a mechanical AUTOMATIC STOP system which operax
during playing and recording. Once the tape has run to its end the AUTOMATIC STOP
system will function and disengage the mechanism, and the RECORD and/or PLAY
button(s) will be returned to the original position(s). On fast forward and rewind
operations, however, you must press the STOP button (_ to disengage the mechan-
ism at the end of the tape.
RECORDING WITH THE BUILT-IN MICROPHONES
One-touch recording system
To place the recorder in the record mode you are required only to press the RECORD
botton (_). Pressing the RECORD button _alone will automatically press the PLAY
button (_) simultaneously.

Insert the cassette into its comparment with full reel to the right and exposed tape
facing upward.
Depress the RECORD button (_).You are now recording. Your set has an Auto-
matic Level Control (ALC), therefore, there is no need to adjust the VOLUME
controls (_) (_ while recording.
To stop the recording temporarily press the PAUSE button _). To restart record-
ing, press the PAUSE button again.

To playback the recording which has just been made press the REWIND (re"
button (_) . The RECORD button (_) will release automatically as the REWII_
(rev) button (_) is pressed. Release the REWIND (rev) button _) when the desired
playback section of the tape is reached. The playback will start automatically as
the REWIND (rev) button (_) is released.
To rewind the tape to its beginning push down the STOP/EJECT button (_)first,
then push down the REWIND (rev) button 5_. Push down the STOP/EJECT but-
ton (_) again to stop the tape.
To end the recording completely, depress the STOP/EJECT button _). If the end
of the tape is reached while recording the recorder will automatically shut off.

RECORDING WITH THE EXTERNAL MICROPHONES
For stereophonic recording connect a pair of external microphones (optional
the L (_ and R __ MIC Jacks. The built-in mics

disconnected when the external mics are connected.
2. Follow the steps under the RECORDING WITH THE BUl LT-IN MICROPHON ES.
RECORDING FROM THE RADIO
1. Set AM/FM switch (_ to either the AM or FM position.
2. Set TAPE (RADIO OFF) - RADIO switch (_ to the RADIO position.
3. Turn the TUNING knob _) for a desired station.
4. Press the STOP/EJECT button (_ to open the cassette compartment lid and insert a
blank cassette tape. Close the cassette compartment lid.
5. Depress the RECORD button (_. You are now recording the radio program on the
tape. Your set has an Automatic Level CoQtrol (ALC), therefore, there is no need
to adjust the VOLUME controls (_ and (_ while recording.
6. To stop the recording temporarily, press the PAUSE button (_). To restart record-
ing, re-press the button.
While recording from the AM radio, the MONO/STEREO switch (_ converts to a
beat cut switch.

If you hear whisting or beat tone while recording, place the MONO/STEREO
switch in either one of the B.C.I (MONO) or B.C.2 (STEREO) position to eliminate
the whistling or beat tone.
To end the recording completely, depress the STOP/EJECT button (_. If the end
of the tape is reached while recording, the recorder will automatically shut off.

TAPE ERASE
All previous recordings are automatically erased as new material is recorded.
TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ERASING
To prevent accidental recording or erasing and to
preserve previous recordings, remove the two tabs
on the back of the cassette.
Once a tab has been removed you won't be able to
depress the RECORD button (_ .If Side "A" is
facing upward then Tab No. Imust be broken off
to prevent accidental erasure. See Figure 6.
If the opposite surface (Side B) is facing upward,
Tab No. 2 must be broken off. Once a tab was
previously broken off, you may still erase or
record by temporarily placing cellophane tape over
the tab opening.
Atl precorded tapes are sold with these protective
tabs already broken off.

CLEANING
be the most common cause of tape recorder operation failure is lack of proper
cleaning, observance of these few simple rules will guarantee longer playing life for
your recorder.
1. CAUTION: Unplug the recorder from AC
outlet before cleaning.
2. Press down the PLAY button (_) so that the
record/playback and erasing heads project
outward, making it easier to clean them. See
Figure 7.
3. Wipe the record/playback and erasing heads
gently with a soft cloth moistened with rub-
bing alcohol.
4. Do not forget to also wipe the pressure roller
and capstan.

If you notice that the sound has become weak or distorted, playing speed has slow-
ed, or the BATTERY indicator has become dim, this is an indication that your
batteries are weak. Be sure to replace them immediately with new ones.
Remove the batteries when storing your set or when not planning to use your set
for a month or more.
Do not place your set in a.40os t on where it will be in direct contact with a
magnetic iron, steel materials, water, or source of heat. Also, avoid leaving your
unit in the direct sunlight over a prolonged period of time.

IF UNIT FAILS TO OPERATEPROPERLY
Carefully re-read the instructions to be sure the player/recorder is being opera_
properly.
Check the following before you take your cassette player/recorder to a Sears Store.
SYMPTOMS
The cassette tape does not sit
in its place.
The PLAY button does not lock
in the down position.
The RECORD button can not be
pressed down.
The tape does not run.
The tape does not run on
battery.
The tape runs but no sound.
The tape sound is weak or
distorted.
No radio sound.
CAUSE
The tape is being inserted in reversed
direction.
The tape is at its end.
(The Automatic-Stop is functioning.)
No tape is inserted in the compartment.
A tape with the safety tabs removed is
inserted.
The PLAY button is in its down position.
The batteries are not installed properly.
The batteries are weak.
The AC adaptor isnot inserted correctly.
The AC adaptor is inserted in the
DC 6V jack on the recorder.
The VOLUME controls are at their
minimum positions.
Dirty Play head.
The batteries are weak.
The TAPE (RADIO OFF)-RADIO switch
in TAPE (RADIO OFF) position.

If you find your set is not working properly after checking the above items, please
take it to your nearest Sears Store. Do not attempt to repair it by yourself.
