TheseinstructionsapplytotheSimpsonDura-Vent5"x8"DirectVentSystem.This
ventingsystem,incombinationwiththegasappliance,hasbeentestedandlistedas
adecorativegasappliancesystem,orasadirectventheatersystembyamajor
testingagencysuchasUL,AGA,CGA,OmniorWarnockHersey. Checkthe
manufacturer'sratingplateandinstructionmanualtoconfirmthattheSimpson
Dura-Ventdirectventsystemisapprovedforuseonthebrandnameapplianceyou
haveselected.
IMPORTANT
Readallinstructionscarefullybeforestartingtheinstallation. Failuretofollowthese
instructionsmaycreateafireorothersafetyhazard,andwillvoidthewarranty. Be
suretochecktheappliancemanufacturer'sinstallationinstructionsforspecific
ventingandclearancetocombustiblerequirements,whichmayvaryfromone
appliance to another. Do not extend the venting system vertically or
horizontally in excess of the distance prescribed in the appliance
manufacturer'sinstallationinstructions.
INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS
TheSimpsonDura-VentDirectVentSystemisanengineeredproductthathasbeen
designedandtestedforusewithanapprovedlistofdirectventgasappliances. The
SimpsonDura-Ventwarrantywillbevoided,andseriousfire,health,orothersafety
hazardsmayresultfromanyofthefollowingactions:
•InstallationofanydamagedDirectVentcomponent.
•UnauthorizedmodificationoftheDirectVentSystem
•Installationofanycomponentpartnotmanufacturedorapprovedby
SimpsonDura-Vent.
•InstallationotherthanasinstructedbySimpsonDura-Ventandthe
appliancemanufacturer.

Consultyourlocalbuildingcodesbeforebeginningtheinstallation.
WARNING
• Always maintain required clearances (air spaces) to nearby
combustiblestopreventafirehazard. Donotfillairspaceswithinsulation.
Besuretochecktheappliancemanufacturers'sinstallationinstructionsforminimum
clearance requirements between the outer walls of the vent pipe and nearby
combustiblesurfaces. Besuretochecktheventterminationclearancerequirements
fromdecks,windows,soffits,gasregulators,airsupplyinlets,andpublicwalkways,
asspecifiedintheseinstallationinstructionsandlocalbuildingcodes.
•Thegasapplianceandventsystemmustbeventeddirectlytothe
outside of the building, and never be attached to a chimney serving a
separatesolidfuelorgas-burningappliance. Eachdirectventgasappliance
mustuseit'sownseparateventsystem. Commonventsystemsareprohibited.

PLANNING YOUR INSTALLATION
Therearetwobasictypesof DirectVentSysteminstallations. Checktheappliance
manufacturer'sinstallationinstructionstoconfirmwhattypesarepermitted,andalso
checkforanyventingrestrictionssuchasmaximumhorizontalrun,andminimumor
maximumverticalrise. Thetwogeneraltypesofinstallationsare:
•Horizontal Termination(Figs1and2)
•Vertical Termination(Fig3)
Whenplanningyourinstallation,itwillbenecessarytoselecttheproperlengthof
ventpipeforyourparticularrequirements. Forhorizontalinstallations,checkthe
appliancemanufacturers'sinstallationsinstructionstodeterminetheminimum
clearancefromtherearoftheappliancetothewall. Itisalsoimportanttonotethe
wallthickness. Selecttheamountofverticalrisedesiredfor"vertical-to-horizontal"
typeinstallations(verifythatitiswithintheappliancemanufacturer'sminimumor
maximum limits). To determine the length of vent pipe required for vertical
installations,measurethedistancefromtheapplianceflueoutlettotheceiling,the
ceilingthickness,theverticalriseinanatticorsecondstory, andallowforsufficient
ventheightabovetheroofline. Fortwo-storyapplications,firestopsarerequired
ateachfloorlevel. Ifanoffsetisneededintheattic,additionalpipeandelbowswill
berequired.
HORIZONTAL INSTALLATION
Step1. Setthegasapplianceinitsdesiredlocation. Checktodetermine
ifwallstudsorroofraftersareinthewaywhentheventingsystemisattached. If
thisisthecase,youmaywanttoadjustthelocationoftheappliance.
Step2. DirectVentpipeandfittingsaredesignedwithspecialtwist-lock
connections. Toconnecttheventingsystemtotheapplianceflueoutlet,atwist-lock
applianceadaptorisrequired. Withsomebrandsofappliances,theSimpsonDura-
Ventadaptorwillbebuiltintotheapplianceatthefactory. Withotherbrands, it
willbesuppliedbythe appliancemanufacturer,forinstallationinthefield. Assemble
thedesiredcombinationofblackpipeandelbowstotheapplianceadaptorwith
pipeseamsorientedtowardsthewallorfloor,asmuchoutofviewaspossible. If
the appliance adaptor is not built into the appliance at the factory, it may be
preferabletoassemblethepipeandelbowstotheadaptorpriortomountingthe
adaptorontothestove. Inthismanner,thepipeand90°elbowassemblymaybe
properlytwist-lockedandrotatedtofacethewalltermination,withfinalpositioning

oftheventpipeassemblydeterminedbythe
mountingorientationoftheapplianceadaptor
ontothestove. (Fig4)
Notes:(1)Twist-lockprocedure: Four
indentations,locatedonthefemaleendsof
pipesandfittings,aredesignedtoslidestraight
onto the male ends of adjacent pipes and
fittings,byorientingthefourpipeindentations
so they match and slide into the four entry
slotsonthemaleends.(Fig5) Pushthepipe
sectionscompletelytogether,thentwist-lock
onesectionclockwiseapproximatelyone-
quarterturn,untilthetwosectionsarefully
locked. Thefemalelockinglugswillnotbe
visible from the outside of the Black Pipe
sections. Theymaybelocatedbyexamining
theinsideofthefemaleends.
(2) Horizontalrunsofventmustbesupportedeverythreefeet. UseWall
StrapsorPlumber'sTape/Strappingforthispurpose.
(3) Sealantisoptional,unlessspecifiedbytheappliancemanufacturer.
Shouldyouelecttousesealant,itisonlynecessaryontheoutertubeofthePipe
Section.Runa1/8"widebeadofsealantaroundthemaleendoftheoutersleeve,
asshowninFigure5,andtwist-lockthepipesorfittingstogether.

Step3. Withtheadaptorandpipeattachedtothestove,slidethestove
intoit'scorrectlocation,andmarkthewallforasquareholeoftheappropriatesize.
Use an 11" x 11" square hole
when using 5" x 8" pipe. The
centerofthesquareholeshould
lineupwiththecenterlineofthe
horizontal pipe, as shown in
Figure 6, unless otherwise
required by the appliance
manufacturer. Cutandframethe
square opening in the exterior
wall where the vent will be
terminated. If the wall being
penetrated is constructed of

noncombustiblematerialonly,i.e.
masonryblockorconcreteonly,a
hole with zero clearance is
acceptable.
Notes:
(1) The horizontal run of vent
mustbelevel, orhavea1/4"rise
forevery1footofruntowardsthe
termination. Neverallowthevent
to run downward. This could
causehightemperaturesandmay
presentthepossibilityofafire.
(2)Thelocationofthehorizontal
ventterminationonanexteriorwall
mustmeet all localand national
buildingcodes, and must not be
easily blocked or obstructed.
Termination clearances are as
follows:
(a) Clearanceabovetheground,
veranda,porch,deckorbalcony: 12inchesminimum.
(b) Clearance to a window (openable or fixed closed) or door: 12
inchesminimum.
(c) Verticalclearancetoaventilatedsoffitlocatedabovethetermination
(ifsoffitextendsahorizontaldistanceof 2feetoutoverthecenterline
ofthetermination): 18inchesminimum.
(d) Clearancetoanunventilatedsoffit: 12inchesminimum.
(e) Clearancetoanoutsidecorner: astestedbyappliancemfgr.
(f) Clearancetoaninsidecorner: astestedbyappliancemfgr.
(g) Nottobeinstalledaboveameter/regulatorassemblywithin3feet
horizontallyfromthecenterlineoftheregulator.

Step 4. Position the
HorizontalVentTermination
in the center of the square
hole, and attach to the
exteriorwallwiththefour
woodscrewsprovided. Beforeattachingtheventterminationtotheexteriorwall,
runabeadofnon-hardeningsealantaroundit'soutsideedges,soastomakeaseal
between itandthewall. Thearrowontheventcapshouldbepointingup. Insure
thatproperclearancestocombustiblematerialsaremaintained. (Fig9)

(1) Thefourwoodscrewsprovidedshouldbereplaced withappropriate
fastenersforstucco,brick,concrete,orothertypesofsidings.

nation. FollowthelabelontheStand-

Step 5. Before connecting the
horizontalrunofventpipetotheventtermination,slidetheBlackDecorativeWall
ThimbleCoverovertheventpipe.
Step6. Slidetheapplianceandventassemblytowardsthewall,carefully
insertingtheventpipeintotheventcapassembly. Itisimportantthattheventpipe
extendintotheventcapa
sufficientdistancesoasto
provideaminimumpipe
overlapof 1-1/4inches.
Securetheconnectionbe-
tween the vent pipe and
theventcapbyattaching
thetwosheetmetalstrips
extendingfromthevent
cap assembly into the
outerwalloftheventpipe.

VERTICAL TERMINATION
Step 1. Check the appliance
manufacturers'sinstallationinstructionsfor
requiredclearances(airspaces)tocom-
bustibleswhenpassingthroughceilings,
walls,roofs,enclosures,atticrafters,or
othernearbycombustiblesurfaces. Do
notpackairspaceswithinsulation. Check
theappliancemanufacturer'sinstructions
formaximumverticalriseoftheventing
system,andanymaximumhorizontaloff-
setlimitations.
Step2. Setthegasappliancein
it's desired location. Drop a plum bob
downfromtheceilingtothepositionofthe
applianceflueexit,andmarkthelocation
wheretheventwillpenetratetheceiling.
Drillasmallholeatthispoint. Next,dropaplumbbobfromtherooftothehole
previouslydrilledintheceiling,andmarkthespotwheretheventwillpenetratethe
roof. (Fig13) Determineifceilingjoists,roofrafters,orotherframingwillobstruct
theventingsystem. Youmaywishtorelocatetheappliance,ortooffsetthevent
pipe toavoidcuttingload-bearing members.

manufacturer. Continuetoassemblelengthsof Pipeand
ElbowsnecessarytoreachfromtheRoundCeilingSupport
upthroughtheroofline.
Notes:
(1) Ifanoffsetisnecessaryin
theattictoavoidobstructions,it
isimportanttosupportthevent
pipe every 3 feet, to avoid
excessivestressontheElbows,
and possible separation. Wall
Straps are available for this
purpose. (Fig15)
(2) Wheneverpossible,
use45°Elbows,insteadof90°
Elbows. The45°Elbowoffers
lessrestrictiontotheflowofflue
gasesandintakeair.

edge of the flashing and the roof.
Insuretheroofingmaterialoverlaps
thetopedgeoftheFlashingasshown

the minimum clearance to
combustiblesattheroofline.
Step 8. Continue to add Pipe
Sectionsuntiltheheightofthepipe
(before adding cap) meets the
minimumbuildingcoderequirements
described in Fig 16. Note that for
steep roof pitches, the vent height
must be increased. In high wind
conditions,nearbytrees,adjoining
rooflines, steep pitched roofs, and
othersimilarfactorscanresultinpoor
draft,ordown-drafting. Inthesecases,
increasingtheventheight,orchanging
thetotheHighWindCap,maysolve
thisproblem
Step9. SliptheStormCollar
overthePipe,andpushitdowntothe
topoftheFlashing,asshowninFig17.

Step2. Usingtheplumb-bob,markthecenterlineoftheventingsystemon
theceilinganddrillasmallholethroughtheceilingandroofatthispoint. Fromthe
roof,locatethedrillholeandmarktheoutlineoftheCathedralCeiling SupportBox.
Step3. Removeshinglesorotherroofcoveringasnecessarytocutthe
rectangularholefortheSupportBox. Cutthehole1/8-inch largerthantheSupport
Boxoutline.
Step4. LowertheSupportBoxthroughtheholeintheroofuntileachside
of thebottomoftheSupportBoxprotrudesatleast2-inchesbelowtheceiling.(Fig
19). AligntheSupportBoxbothverticallyandhorizontallywithalevel.Temporarily

GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Conductan inspectionoftheventing
systemsemi-annually. Recommended
areastoinspectareasfollows:
1. Check areas of the Venting
System which are exposed to the
elementsforcorrosion. Thesewillappear
asrustspotsorstreaks,andinextreme
cases,holes. Thesecomponentshould
immediatelybereplaced.
2. RemovetheCap, andshineaflashlightdowntheVent. Removeany
birdnests,orotherforeignmaterial.
3. Checkforevidencesofexcessive
condensate,suchaswaterdropletsforming
intheinnerliner,andsubsequentlydripping
outatjoints. Continuous condensate can
causecorrosionofcaps,pipe,andfittings. It
maybecausedbyhavingexcessivelateral
runs,toomanyelbows,andexteriorportions
ofthesystembeingexposedtocoldweather.
4. Inspectjoints,toverifythatno
PipeSectionsorFittingshavebeendisturbed,
and consequently loosened. Also check
mechanicalsupportssuchasWallStraps,or
plumbers'tapeforrigidity.
LABELS
All componentsarelabelledwiththeappropriateidentificationinformation. Pipe
andfittingswhicharepaintedblack,havethelabelplacedontheinsideoftheouter
sleevenearthemaleend.
