Maintenance
Bolts
- Check bolts regularly for correct tightness. Bolts should be tightened
Firmly so that they do not slop around in bolt holes, but should not be
over-tightened to cause restrictive movement of parts. Worn bolts
should be replaced immediately.
Cylinder
- Keep top and lower plunger rods clean of dirt or other foreign
substances to assure smooth operation of cylinder.
- Make sure all threaded connections are tight to assure smooth
operation of cylinder.
- Replace seals, wipers, and O-rings if cylinder is leaking oil.
- Lubricate top plunger rod where rod enters top reservoir with an
aerosol type lubricant.
- It is recommended when head gate is not in use to fully open doors.
This will place the bottom plunger into the cylinder protecting it
from the elements.
- Change to oil in the cylinder every 4 years or as needed.
- Any cylinder malfunction should be immediately reported to your
dealer or Sioux Steel.
Procedure for Changing Oil
1) Using Mobil DTE 24 Excel 31 (10W) Shell AW36 or AW46
Oil, measure and set aside 11 ozs. of oil.
2) Remove cylinder from head gate.
3) Remove cylinder actuator and drain oil from the top reservoir.
4) Carefully remove the cylinder rod and drain oil from the
bottom reservoir.
5) Remove the bottom reservoir from the cylinder lock.
6) Re-install cylinder rod into bottom reservoir, leaving
approximately 9-1/2” of cylinder rod exposed.
7) Fill bottom reservoir with approximately 9 ozs of oil or until
the fluid level just meets the start of the threads within the
bottom reservoir.
8) Re-install the bottom reservoir onto the cylinder body and
Tighten to 85 ft/lbs.
9) Pour remaining oil into top reservoir of the cylinder body.
10) Re-install cylinder actuator with spring into the top reservoir.
11) Slowly actuate the cylinder to remove air from the bottom
reservoir. Continue until the cylinder effectively locks.
12) Re-install cylinder onto head gate.
13) Before operation of head gate, cycle the head gate at least 10 times, ensuring to stop for 5
seconds between opening and closing AND each cycle. Then with the head gate closed,

manually attempt to open the head gate doors. The opening at the top of the doors should never
exceed ¾”.
Troubleshooting
If doors open greater than ¾” when hand pressure is applied (see fig. 2) try the following:
1) Bleed the cylinder of air (see fig. 1)
a. Push the handle in and hold.
b. While holding handle in, push top plunger down and hold approximately 1 minute.
c. Release handle and top plunger.
2) If Head Gate still does not hold, cylinder may not be activating properly.
a. Top plunger may be stuck. Lubricate top plunger rod where rod enters top reservoir with
an aerosol type lubricant.
b. Verify cap and jam nut on top plunger are tight and set at proper setting to prevent ½”
actuator rod from activating internal check valve.
3) It may be necessary to add additional oil to top reservoir or that cylinder does not have enough
oil. See previous page on adding additional oil to top reservoir or changing oil in cylinder.
Contact Sioux Steel for additional assistance if needed.
