Thesinglemostimportantthingyoucandotoextendthelifeof
electronicproductsistokeepthemcool.Forevery10C(18F)hotterthat
equipmentruns,thelifeofthecomponentsiscutinhalf.Sincewehave
eliminatedtheneedforafanbyusingmassiveexternalheatsinksandmany
internalheatsinks,itisabsolutelycrucialthattherebeadequateairflow
aroundtheamplifier.Donotplacetheamplifierinanenclosedcabinet.
Theremustbeatleast3inchesoffreespaceonbothsides,
back,andthetop.Thefrontmustbeopen.

lowercosts.Heatsinkscouldhavebeenreducedandmanyoftheexpensive
holesinthetopandbottomcouldhavebeenavoided.Butafanmeans

Inordertoachievethemaximumpossibleperformanceatthe
highestplayinglevels,itisimportanttouseaheavydutypowercordsuchasthe14gauge
onessupplied.Itisbesttoplugdirectlyintothewall.Ifaplugstriporextensioncordmust
beused,theyshouldbeasheavyasthepowercord.Useonlythepowersourceindicated
onthelabel.BothmonoblocksmustbepluggedintoAC.

beforemakinganyconnections,otherwiseyoucaninjurethespeakers.TheINLEDs
reflectthelevelofthesignalgoingintotheInputs.(Seepage9.)
Youmay wanttotryrunninginputsdirectlyfromthesourcetotheSLC-A600.
Thiswillpreventthesoundfrombeingdegradedbyanypieceofequipment
placedinbetweenthesourceandtheSLC-A600.However,somesourcesmay
havetooweakofasignalformaximumSLCeffect.Askyourdealerorcheckthe
websiteforwhatequipmenthasbeenfoundtoworkwellwiththeSLC-A600.
TheSLC-A600willdrivespeakerloadsfrom4-16ohms.300watts/channelat
8ohms
VOLUME
Conespeakerslosetheirflexibilitywithage.Thepowerfulbassmay
tearolderspeakercones.Speakerdamagecanoccurbeforeyourheardistortion.
Beforeconnectingtheproducttootherequipment,turnoffthepowerandunplugalloftheequipmentfromthe
walloutlet.Thiswillavoidpossibleelectricshockandseriouspersonalinjury.Whenmakinganyconnections,
readandfollowtheinstructionsofthismanualandtheowner'smanualoftheotherequipment.
SpeakerWire: TheSLC-A600cansupplyover9ampsofcurrenttothe
speakerload.ThismeansthatwiththeSLC-A600,weareconcernedwith
inductancemuchmorethancapacitance.Ingeneral,wirethatis14gaugeor
heavierwithlowinductancewillgivethebestperformance.

Itisbesttousethesamelengthofspeakerwireforapairof
speakers.Notallspeakercablessoundthesame,sotrydifferentones.
Cheaperconnectorsareavailableoverseas.WhybuyCardas
connectorsintheUSAandshipthemoverseastothemanufacturer?You
guessedit:theoxygenfreecopperandshortsignalpathmakethemsound
better,workbetter,andlookrealcool.
Tightenallconnections,aslooseconnectionscancausearcing
andcorrosion.Bothcandegradethesound.
Thisisanoptionalconveniencefeature.Twoscrewterminalson
thelowerrightcanbeusedtoconnecttotheremoteturn-onfeatureofsomepreamplifiers
andsurroundsoundsystems.Makesuretheplusandminusareconnectedproperly.The
ampmustbeturnedOffthesamewayitisturnedOn:Ifremoteturn-onisusedtoturnOnthe
amp,thenitmustalsobeusedtoturnOfftheamp.IfthefrontpowerbuttonisusedtoturnOn
theamp,thenitmustalsobeusedtoturnOfftheamp.Theturn-oncircuitisdesignedto
respondtoawiderangeofvoltages.Itwillworkfrom3VDCto18VDC.
Noiseismeasuredindecibels
(dB).ThenoisefloorofanormalCDis96dBbelowpeakoutput,alimitationof
16bitencoding.Ifyougofrom96dBtothe 120dBoftheSLC-A600,thereisa
differenceof24dB.Thisisnot25%better,becausedBarenotlikenormal
numbers.WithdB,every3dBlowerishalfthenoise.SotheSLC-A600isover
100timesquieter.(Withhum,themoredBsbelowthepeakoutput,thequieter
itis.)Thismeansthatthehumcomponentsarenotlouderthanthenoisefloorat
only1wattoutput.Inotherwords,youcanenjoythefulldynamicrangeofaCDat1watt
outputwithoutthehumdegradingtheCD’snoisefloor.

putiton,andthenlistenforhum,motornoiseandbackgroundclutter.
(Thisisafanatic’stestforanentiresystem.)Clean
aCD.ThenputathumbprintonthebottomsideoftheCD.PlaytheCDandlisten
carefully-theCDplayerwillcompensateforthethumbprint,butitwillnotmakea
perfectcorrection.ThencleantheCDandlistenagain.Ifyoucanhearthe
differencewithandwithoutthethumbprint,thenyoursystemiscapableof
revealinggreatspatialdetail.Ifyoursystemdoesnotpassthistest,thenthefault

conservativelydesignedandcancontinuouslyputout300Wattstoeachchannel
indefinitelywithoutgettingtoohot,evenwhilesittingina100Froom.Theonly
waythatthethermalprotectorcanoperateisifacomponentfailedintheamplifier
ortheamplifierhasbeenplacedinaconfinedspaceblockingproperventilation.If
theamplifierisplacedonashelf,theremustbeatleast3”clearanceonbothsides,
theback,andthetop.Thefrontoftheamplifiershouldbenearthefrontofthe
shelfandthewholefrontareamustbeopen.

Thermalshut-down
Amplifiershutdownduetoblownfuses:

Toseewhetherthethermalprotectionshutofftheamplifier,verybriefly-much
lessthanonesecond-touchthefins.Ifyoucanholdyourhandorafingerforone
secondcomfortably,thenitisprobablynothotenoughtohavetrippedthethermal
sensors.Ifitfeelsveryhot,thesensorscouldhavetripped.Inthatcase,turnoff
ordisconnecttheamplifierandwaitfifteenminutes.Aftertheamplifierhas
cooled,relocateitinamoreopenplaceandtrypluggingitinandturningiton.
Ifthefinsarenowcomfortablycooltothetouch,ifyouknowthatthepowerisgood
