Introduction
The Sonic Communications (Int) Ltd ESN USB Remote Speaker Microphone (USB-
RSM), provides a high-performance audio accessory, designed against the Home
Office ESN specification for an ESN compatible 3ES Remote Speaker Microphone,
capable of meeting the requirements of users across all the Emergency Services.
The design allows for the USB-RSM to be positioned on the uniform of the wearer by
use of the Klick Fast mounting method. This grants the user the ability to position the
BT-RSM in the same location that TETRA terminals are currently worn.
Its ruggedised design and IP67 environmental standard, ensures efficient and
reliable operation under all conditions, with glove friendly controls positioned in a
similar manner to those on current TETRA terminals, to assist user familiarity.
Talkgroups can be selected by using the multi-function rotary control on the Remote
Speaker Microphone, reducing the need for the user to access their C1 Smartphone/
Device. In conjunction with the Kodiak ESN App, the USB-RSM will provide voice
annunciation of the selected Talkgroup. The rotary control can also be used for
volume adjustment.
The USB-RSM has the provision to connect a range of receive only earpiece
devices, to allow private reception of incoming radio messages. Connection of the
earpiece automatically disables the USB-RSM speaker.
A multi-pin headset connector is also featured on the USB-RSM, which allows the
connection of a wide range of operationally specific communications headsets, for
use with Motorcycle, Public Order and Firearms helmets, or any application where
there is a role specific requirement to remote transmit and receive audio from the
remote speaker microphone.

Operation
Note: The following instructions assume that the Smartphone/Device and the USB-RSM are
connected and the Smartphone/Device has the Kodiak App, V10.0.2.22C running.
Push-To-Talk (PTT)
• Press and hold the PTT button and wait for KODIAK grant tones to transmit.
Release the button to end the transmission.
• To end an ongoing PTT call and close the talkgroup floor, press the green Soft
Key-1
Function Select/Control Knob
Note: The Function Select/Control knob works as both a Volume control and Talkgroup
select. The mode can be selected by momentarily pressing the Function Select/Control
knob to toggle between modes. Rotating the knob clockwise or anti-clockwise as required will
select Volume level or Talkgroup. On Power On, the mode will default to Volume setting.
Volume Mode: Rotate the knob clockwise to increase the volume level,
anticlockwise to decrease. The USB-RSM must be receiving (floor open) for the
volume control to function. The USB-RSM will beep x1 to confirm Volume mode
when the Function Select/Control knob is pressed.
Talkgroup Mode: Rotate the knob clockwise or anti-clockwise to change Talkgroup.
The USB-RSM will annunciate the Talkgroup name from the loudspeaker or receive
earpiece. The USB-RSM will beep x2 to confirm Talkgroup mode when the Function
Select/Control knob is pressed. After 5 seconds of inactivity, the device will revert
back to Volume Mode.

Headset Socket
The multi-function headset socket located on the base of the USB-RSM is designed
to allow a wide range of compatible communications headsets to be connected.
Headsets are available for Motorcycle Helmet use, Public Order, Firearms,
Fireground and all operational requirements, where a headset is required to be used,
rather than microphone and receive audio being presented from the USB-RSM or
into a receive earpiece.
Earpiece Jack Socket
Note: The USB-RSM earpiece uses a custom design keyed jack connector to ensure
a waterproof IP67 connection when the earpiece accessory is plugged in. Alternative
or non-approved earpiece accessories may damage the USB-RSM and invalidate the
warranty. Sound pressure levels using non-approved earpieces may exceed safe
volume levels, resulting in hearing damage.
Connecting the Earpiece: The earpiece jack connector needs to
be orientated with the lock/unlock symbols facing to the front of the
USB-RSM, as shown in Fig.1, to allow the jack to be inserted.
• To lock the connector into the USB-RSM, rotate the connector
through 90⁰ so the cable runs vertically upwards or
downwards.
• To disconnect the earpiece connector, rotate the connector so
the lock/unlock symbols face to the front of the USB-RSM (as
shown in image). Pull the jack from the socket by holding the
body of the plug, not the cable as this may cause undue
damage.
Connecting the earpiece jack to the USB-RSM will disconnect the USB-RSM
loudspeaker.
FIG.1.

9
Battery
• Charging: The USB-RSM is charged using a compatible lead connected to
the USB-C charging/programming socket on the base of the USB-RSM.
Charge time is approximately 3 hours from fully discharged.
• Charge Indicator: The Status LED will show Red while charging and will
change status to Green when fully charged.
• Low Battery Warning: Battery life is a minimum of 10 hours from fully
charged. The low battery warning will generate 3x descending in frequency
tones in the loudspeaker, or into an earpiece if connected.
From the first low battery warning, the status LED will flash Red/Blue every 10
seconds and a series of further low battery warning tones will be sent at 5-
minute intervals over a 30 minute period, before the USB-RSM powers down
and 5 descending tones will be heard from the loudspeaker or in the earpiece,
if connected. The USB-RSM will now need to be placed on charge for a
minimum of 5 minutes, before it can be powered On again.
Note: If required, the USB-RSM can be charged whilst powered On and connected
to a Smartphone/Device, and will remain On when the charger is removed.
